SOLUTIONSI was visiting a commercial customer,where I helped take apart a hay rake.He asked me for the easy-pack. Themachine only needed one quart of Semi-Fluid Synthetic EPGrease (GSF). We onlyhave it in a 5-gal. bucket. So, I lost out onthat sale. While there, he also asked forwheel-bearing grease in tubs for his otherequipment. I let him know we don’t haveit in tubs. Not even a day later, one of myretailers sent me a picture of AMSOILgrease in a tub that he just finished,saying “order me more of this please.” Inever knew we had grease in tubs until hesent me that picture! But we don’t offer itanymore so we had to cut open a tube tofill his old AMSOIL tub. Not ideal. I alsoset up at the GNCC races and I had atleast five people ask for grease in a tub.Selling to retailers and commercial oreven industrial customers has its pros,like higher volume, but it has its annoyingissues like one-off products or solutions. IfAMSOIL keeps pushing the envelope likeit has, we will find those solutions and thecustomers! Maybe we can become, or buyinto, a factory fill for an automotive brandto earn market share? Another idea: If wehad some info on how we are doing atselling products then maybe we can focuson products that need our attention.The only solution I can think of for retailmom and pop installers is a system tostore oil out of the way. If we had drumsor a system mounted up high with asystem to fill jugs down low it could solvethe “no room for drums” argument. Wewould still have to sell drums or betteryet, a bag in a box of say 10-20 gallonsat a time to pump to the drum above withalmost no waste. Also, most mom andpop shops can’t afford to buy 3-4 drums(one for each weight) at a time so wecould offer smaller packaging.Another product people ask me for is“high-mileage” motor oils. I think we couldsell a product like that if we offered it. Ifpossible, maybe just add it to the labels.I thank you for the amazing opportunity! Offering grease in tubs has beenconsidered over the years, but marketresearch revealsmost modern applicationsfeature grease-for-life bearings or comewith grease zerks, severely limiting thedemand for tubs. Due to cost, low overalldemand, potential leaking/safety issuesand lack of manufacturing control, we havedetermined bag in a box is not a good fitat this time, while high storage shelvescreate several issues related to access,safety and environmental regulations (thatvary depending on location).We do offertank and pumping solutions at low costto Dealers as part of the Dealer Co-opProgram (Dealer Zone>CommercialBusiness Tools>Tools to Help YouSucceed>Bulk Dispensing Co-opProgram). If 55-gal. drums are too large,most products are also offered in 30-gal.drums. Weunderstand high-mileage motoroil is a fast-growing category and areactively reviewing solutions for this market.

POWER TRANSFER UNITSFord* has been having serious issues withtheir power transfer units (PTU) on theirExplorers.* Many have to be replacedunder the warranty at less than 60,000miles, costing the warranty companymegabucks. Due to the small amount ofoil in the PTU, the close proximity to thecatalytic converter and hot engine, the oilturns to mud by 70,000 miles or less. Theunit is not made for servicing. What weare doing is tapping-in a drain hole andextending the top vent by removing thecap and extending it with a 3-ft. hose sowe can fill the PTUeasier from the top ofthe engine.We replace the vent cap on thehose when finished filling the PTU. Fordnow suggests that the PTUbe drained andre-filled at about 30,000-mile intervals.The newer ones have drain holes, but weare unable to get to the fill hole easily andcontinue to use the vent-hose process tofill the unit. Ford used a 75W-140 oil. Whatdoes AMSOIL have for this purpose, anddo you have an additive which can beadded to extend the life of the PTU?PTUreplacement will run around $3,000.Thanks,Joe FossAMSOIL: Great question, Joe. Werecently evaluated the best ways to

access and change the PTU fluid in a2016 Ford Explorer, and found our newFloTool Flexible Pour Spout (see p. 20)coupled with an AMSOIL easy-packpresents a great solution. We went inthrough the wheel well area and hadno issues accessing the fill port withoutmodifying the existing layout. The mostdifficult part of the job was getting theold fluid out of the PTU. As for the fluidturning to “mud” within 70,000 miles,our SEVEREGEAR® 75W-140 (SVO) isspecially built to withstand extreme heatand is an excellent choice.

Whether in an air-cooled V-twin, metricsport bike, hard-working UTVorprofessional dirt bike, oil has to protectagainst wear and fight the damagingeffects of extreme heat. Years ago itwas possible to make one motor oilto protect all these applications. Buttoday’s engines aren’t so simple.

V-twin motorcyclesAir-cooled V-twins can get hot. In ourdyno testing of a 2019 Harley-Davidson*Milwaukee-Eight* engine, the rearcylinder temperature hit 421ºF (216ºC).

Heat that intense can wreak havoc onthe motor oil. The oil can lose viscosityand become thinner. A lighter viscositythan what the engine is designed to usecan fail to protect parts against wear.Extreme heat also hastens chemicalbreakdown. In fact, the rate of oxidationdoubles for every 18ºF (10ºC) increasein oil temperature.

It’s vital that the oil meant for your air-cooled V-twin is formulated to withstandsuch intense heat. To accomplish that,we formulate AMSOIL Synthetic V-TwinMotorcycle Oil with added resistance toextreme heat. Its naturally heat-resistantsynthetic base oils maintain viscositydespite extreme heat and the shearingforce of transmissiongears “cutting” theoil’s molecular structure. That translatesinto reliable protection in the toughestriding conditions.

Metric motorcyclesIn metric sport bikes, foam is one ofthe biggest challenges to oil. A metricbike can easily surpass 10,000 rpm.Themechanical action of the crankshaftspinning that fast can whip air into theoil, causing foam.

If the oil isn’t formulated to quicklyrelease air, foam bubbles will travelthroughout the engine. When theycollapse between meshing gears orbearing surfaces, nothing is left behindto provide protection except air. We allneed air, but it’s worthless at protectinghigh-performance engines against wear.

For that reason, we formulate AMSOILSynthetic Metric Motorcycle Oilspecifically to resist foam. Its anti-foamadditives weaken the surface tensionof air bubbles, helping eliminate foam.This results in excellent wear protectionno matter how heavy you lay into thethrottle.

ATVs/UTVsBecause ATVs and UTVsare often usedto perform heavy work at slow speeds,oil film strength is especially important.

Slow, methodical operation whenheavily loaded places increased stresson the engine bearings. If the oil’s filmstrength doesn’t hold up, the increasedpressure will rupture the oil film andslowly wear out the bearings.

You might think, “Sure, but my Harleyruns hard, too.” True, but motorcyclesare typically ridden recreationally,meaning they undergo increased stresswhen accelerating, but level out onceyou reach cruising speed. Riding ata consistent speed under light loadcreates less stress than, for example,pulling a stump out of the ground withyour UTVor pulling a loaded traileruphill through the mud with your ATV.

Dirt bikesFinally, we have dirt bikes, whichundergo low-speed stress punctuatedwith periods of high revving.

Racers lean on the throttle out of thegate, then back off into the first corner.They’re back on the throttle through thewhoops, causing the rear tire to spinfreely when it’s in the air. Hitting theground, though, places a heavy load onthe engine.

Where dirt bikes differ, however, isin engine design. They are typicallylightweight and meant for performance.Any time you remove mass, yet increasepower, you increase engine stress. Thecombination of high rpm and lightermaterials creates the perfect scenariofor engine failure should the motor oilfail to do its job. Plus, dirt bikes canproduce 50 hp or more, yet they barelyhold a quart of oil, exposing the oil totremendous stress.

“If you go back to the ConsumerReports reviews on that 2000 Beetle,they’re terrible,” said Melvin. “My dadsaid, ‘Why are you getting that? Thereviews are so bad.’” But Melvin knewa Volkswagen mechanic nearby whomhe trusted, and he wanted the fuel-economy benefits of a diesel.

“At the time, the Volkswagen TDI washard to get a hold of; you had to be in theright place at the right time,” said Melvin.After 20 years, the 1.9L turbodiesel five-speed manual still gets 46 mpg.

“I change oil every 10,000 miles (16,000km), and with conventional oil changingevery 3,000 (4,800 km), you’re goingto spend more money, not counting thelabor. To me, it’s a no-brainer.”

Drive it until it quits“I’ve always believed you should drivea car until it quits,” said Melvin. “To me,buying a car every two to three yearsisn’t beneficial.” With the help of AMSOILproducts, it may be a while beforeMelvin’s Beetle quits running. “I just thinkit’s a good product. It’s proven to me,and I can tell that to anybody,” he said.“I’ll probably work until I’m 62, so I hopeto put at least another 150,000 miles(241,000 km) on it.”

Half-Million-Mile VW*Beetle* Still RunningStrongMost people can’t believe it when Randy Melvin tells them his 2000 Volkswagen Beetlehas 500,000 miles (804,700 km) on it. The UPS tractor-trailer driver from Troutman, N.C.commutes 125 miles (201 km) round trip between home and Winston-Salem,N.C. eachday. When it came time to purchase a new vehicle back in 1999, he opted for a VWTDIdue to its high estimated fuel economy, despite the car’s poor reviews.

Theoverall motorcycle market is divided into two categories:

V-TWIN• Refers to the engine configuration of most large-displacement, typically air-cooled cruiser bikes.Harley-Davidson is by far the most popular brand,with Indian gaining ground.

METRIC• Traditionally foreign-made bikes that requiremetric tools toperform maintenance. This category includes adventurebikes, sport bikes, cruiser bikes and large touring bikes.Honda, KTM,* and Kawasaki are common manufacturers.

RIDER TYPESV-TWINIt’s helpful to break downV-twin riders according to thebrand to which they are loyal.

• Harley-Davidson* boasts the largestmarket share by aconsiderable margin. The Harley brand dominates bikerculture despite flat sales the past few years. Riders tend tobe older and love the feeling of hitting the open highwayontheir bikes. They enjoy riding to bike rallies, such as Sturgis,Daytona BikeWeek and Laconia Motorcycle Week. Theyalso enjoy attending bike-night events in their areas. Targetriders who are less loyal to Harley-branded products. SomeHarley owners question the value of Harley-Davidson-branded parts and accessories, including lubricants.Target enthusiasts who accumulate high miles or who havemodified their bikes for increased performance. Theseriders are often in tune with changes in performance or theriding experience (heat, noise, shift quality).

• Indian* continues to gain followers,particularly amongenthusiasts who want to stand out from the Harley crowd.Owners value American brands, history, attention todetail, quality, power and freedom – traits embodied in theAMSOIL brand. Most have looked forward to owning anIndian motorcycle for years, while many are former Harley-Davidson owners who became dissatisfied with the brand.

METRICIt’s helpful to break down metricriders according to bike type.

• Adventure – The fastest-growingsegment in the entire motorcyclemarket. Riders tend to be youngdo-it-yourselfers who take pride in their bikes' refinedengineering.
