President’sMessage

Dear Club Members, Anns and Annets,

I wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2021! January always starts with great expectations and a sense of a new beginning, fresh ideas and initia-tives. Everyone is resolved to make the year dif-ferent. Will 2021 be different from last year? We don’t know, but I hope 2021 will be different and better for all of us.

This month we also celebrate The Republic Day.A thousand salutes to this great nation of ours. May it become even more prosperous and great. Happy Republic Day!

As I enter the second quarter of my term as Pres-ident of Rotary Club of Miramar, I thank all of you for all the support that I got until now. I hope this continues for the other half as well.

This month we had our official District Governor visit and had an eventful day with him. Rtn DG Sangram Patil came to visit us, he was accom-panied by our very own Assistant Governor Rtn. Krishnakumar. The day started with inauguration of toilet block a KRSS High School Savoiverem fol-lowed by inauguration of Happy School Project at Government Primary School Betki. He later in-augurated National Immunity Day by giving polio dose to children. DG was so happy with the Happy School Project, and looking at the infrastructure requirement for the school, he decided to sanc-tion an additional district grant of approximately Rs. 1,00,000. We missed the presence of First Lady

Rtn. Utkarsha patil during the DG’s visit.

I’m proud to be the president under the visionary of Rtn. DG Sangram Patil, who has the potential to be the World President of Rotary Internation-al. I have to assure the DG that I will try to fulfil his dreams and goals set for district 3170. He has shown his resilience and courage to visit so many clubs during a global pandemic. So much was hisdedication to the organisation called Rotary.

DG has given us a budget of $5000 for donation of TRF as a club and Inspection of accords was done by our DG.

I also sincerely thank Vice President Shantendu Mohite for conducting two consecutive meetings in my absence.

We have our weekly meetings in physical form now with all the SOP guidelines followed. The venue decided is the same i.e Club de Gasper Dias. I hope to see all members present for the meetings.

Wishing you all a good and successful 2021.

Stay safe.

The first half of the term is over but the struggle for getting articles for our magazine is still the same. I request all members to take a little interest in OUR monthly magazine and submit articles, recipes, drawings etc.

Donation of Cement Bags to KRSS HIgh School:Krishna Raghunath Shetye Savoikar High School is a high school at Savoiverem which is the only high school in the area which caters to the rural kids in that area. This school unfortunately didn’t have a proper toilet facility. A lack of access to proper sani-tation facilities poses a huge barrier to education as children frequently miss school due to hygiene-re-lated diseases. Toilets and proper washing stations can help stop the spread of many diseases, so our club decided to donate cement bags to the school to build toilets. Our member Rtn Lucky Singh spon-sored cement bags and Rtn Megha Harmalkar spon-sored the tiles..

The theme of this month is Vocational Service Month. Vocational Service is one of the most important aspects of Rotary. It helps in building relationships. Learning about professions and job involvement is one of those foundation stones to creating an environment in our Rotary Clubs which builds relation-ships. Vocational Service is one Rotary’s five Avenues of Service. Vocational is difficult to define, so it is sometimes called the “Forgotten Avenue of Service”. One reason is Club, Community, International and Youth Service activities usually involve groups of Rotarians. They enjoy the fellowship of Club Service, the satisfaction of serving the needs of their communities, and the hope that their International Service promotes world peace and understanding. But Vocational Service – the second Avenue of Service -- is generally conducted by individual members. Often during the introduction of a new member there can be glimpses of what job choice has been made. And there are those occasional programs devoted to Rotary membership talks where a new member or a more seasoned member shares their life story and work experiences.

Intriguing, interesting and informative are words that will often describe these vocational talks.

New and innovative work positions are being created in our world. Vocational Service month is a great time to celebrate and learn about the life work of our members, whether it is a profession that has lots of history or newly established.

This month and in the months ahead, take some time during your club meetings to have Rotarians share their stories of what they do to impact their world. Relationships will be stronger and one of the reasons for the founding of Rotary will be expressed.

Republic Day is celebrated every year on 26 Janu-ary. We went for flag hoisting to our schools every year but what exactly is Republic Day celebrated for? This is the question that comes to our minds and often we get confused between Republic Day and Independence Day, so let’s see what Republic Day is celebrated for.

India became an independent nation on 15 th Au-gust 1947 after a long battle with the British. At this time, although independent, India didn’t have a permanent Constitution, but it functioned by mod-ifying the Laws of Colonial Government of India Act 1935.

When the leaders realized that India needs a full-

fledged Constitution that caters to the specific needs of Indians, a resolution was made on 29 August 1947 for the appointment of Drafting Committee for the development of a permanent constitution.

The panel is responsible for scrutinizing the “draft of the text of the Constitution of India prepared by Constitutional Adviser” along with “giving effect to the decisions already taken in the Assembly and including all matters which are ancillary thereto or which have to be provided in such a Constitution”. The committee was asked to submit the final draft in front of the Constituent Assembly for consider-ation and revision.

The Drafting Committee had seven members,

Compiled By Annet Vaidehi Amlani

namely Alladi Krishnaswami Ayyar, N Gopalas-wami, BR Ambedkar, KM Munshi, Mohammad Saadulla, BL Mitter and DP Khaitan. At its first meeting on 30 August, 1947, with Dr B R Ambed-kar as the chairman.

The first draft of the constitution was submitted by the committee to the Constituent Assembly on 4 November 1947. The Assembly met for 166 days, spread over a period of two years, 11 months and 18 days in sessions open to public before adopting the Constitution. After many contemplations and modifications finally on January 24th the 308 mem-bers of the Assembly signed two hand-written cop-ies of the document each in Hindi and English. And two days later history was created. The Constitution of India came into effect on January 26th, 1950. On this day, India was declared as a Republic Nation.

While India’s Independence Day celebrates its free-dom from British Rule, the Republic Day celebrates the coming into force of its constitution. Repub-lic Day is celebrated to commemorate the day the Constitution of India came into effect.

To celebrate this day, every year, a Republic Day pa-rade is held at the Rajpath in New Delhi. The day begins with the Prime Minister paying tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate. The presidentalso hoists a flag at Rajpath and several important dignitaries, alongside the Prime Minister and the President, are present for the parade. Colourful tab-leaus, tank show, air show and bike pyramids are some of the most famous attractions of the parade. Also, a foreign head of the state is invited as the Chief Guest. However, things were different this year, given we are still coping with the pandemic. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had to call off his trip due to the second lockdown imposed in the country and a large number of people will not be allowed in 2021.

On the eve of Republic Day, the President of India distributes Padma Awards i.e Padma Vibhushan,

Padma Bhushan and Padma Shree to the civilians of India every year.

To mark the closing of Republic day celebrations the Beating Retreat ceremony is held on the evening of 29 January, the third day after Republic Day. The three wings of the military, the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force bands perform on this day.
