Introduct ion The noble beauty of the horse has always inspired man to make an equally handsome appearance. The horseman's careful attention to each detail of the tack, to the design of each accessory, and to the impeccable tailoring of each piece of clothing gives evidence to his respect for the horse and to his own self-respect as well. In this sense, the Costume Institute's exhibition is far more than a survey of riding apparel; it is in essence the history of a very special style, one that is still preserved today in equestrian costumes worn by sportsmen throughout the world. This booklet, prepared from label copy in the exhibition, serves as a guide through the galleries and as a supplement to the Museum's major publication Man and the Horse. Each gallery is organized thematically—some around specific sports and some around a particular

lifestyle, but all celebrate the beauty of horses and their accomplished, elegant riders and attendants.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to the many individuals and organizations who made the exhibition possible through generous loans of riding apparel and equipment, and through welcome advice about the specifics of dressing for these very special activities.
