Introduction

This book represents the twelfth edition of the leading reference work MAJOR COMPANIES OF THE ARAB WORLD. This volume has been completely updated compared to last year's edition. Many new companies have also been included. The publishers remain confident that MAJOR COMPANIES OF THE ARAB WORLD contains more information on the major industrial and commercial companies than any other work. The information in the book was submitted mostly by the companies themselves, completely free of charge. To all those companies, which assisted us in our research operation, we express grateful thanks. To all those individuals who gave us help as well, we are similarly very grateful.

Definition of a major company The criteria we have applied for the selection of companies of major status for inclusion in this book are a mixture of the following: 1 The company must have a significant sales turnover

and/or issued capital, relative to other Arab companies.

2 The company must have a strong position in its national or international markets.

3 The company must have shareholders and/ or directors who are persons of prominence in the business life of their country.

4 The company should be making a notable contribution to the economic growth of its country or region.

5 The company may be a significant branch of a major international corporation. Foreign bank branches and representatives offices have also been included.

6 The company may be recently established but nonetheless have sufficient capital, sufficiently prominent shareholders, and be aiming to serve a sufficiently growth-oriented market, to have significant expansion prospects.

7 Certain companies have been included which, although they may not be very large, are nonetheless important to firms wishing to import and export. Shipping agents are an example.

IMPORTANT All company entries have been entered in MAJOR COMPANIES OF THE ARAB WORLD absolutely free of charge, thus ensuring a totally objective approach to the information given. Whilst the publishers have made every effort to ensure that the information in this book was correct at the time of going to press, no responsibility or liability can be accepted for any errors or omissions, or for the consequences thereof.

Readers are welcome to write, phone or telex for a free copy of our illustrated complete catalogue of publications.

Usage of the Index This book has been arranged to allow the reader to locate the company entries in three ways.

Firstly the Contents page at the front of the book lists the countries which are covered in the book and the pages on which they can be found.

Secondly the companies are listed alphabetically within each country, allowing any particular company to be located quickly. As for many readers English may be a second or third language the alphabetic ordering used is a strict one and arranged as though the name including initials is one word.

For example: ADE Engineering appears before Aden Engineering but after ACE Engineering

Thirdly three cross-referenced indexes are situated at the end of the book.

a) An alphabetical listing of all companies included in Major Companies of the Arab World

b) An alphabetical listing of the companies included in each country section c) A business activity index of all companies in Major Companies of the Arab

World subdivided into the categories listed opposite.

GULF TRADE AND FINANCE 1i'ends and Market Prospects Rodney Wilson

Senior Lecturer in the Economics of the Middle East at the University of Durham

There is much uncertainty about the outlook for the Arabian Gulf, yet despite the oil price-induced recession, the area remains an important market for European, American and]apanese exporters. Gulf Trade and Finance is designed as a reference volume for the businessman and banker involved in the region. This new work, by a noted British economist who has specialised in the Mideast economies for a number of years, analyses the current economic situation in the region and produces valuable forecasts of future trade and financial trends up to 1995. Dr Wilson's text is amply illustrated with computer generated line and bar charts, shade graphs and pie diagrams.

The International WHO'S WHO of the ARAB WORLD 1987/88 THE INTERNATIONAL WHO'S WHO OF THE ARAB WORLD is a unique source of reference. In one volume, it provides an alphabetical listing of approximately 3,200 biographies of prominent Arabs. It includes both Arabs resident in the Arab World, and those living abroad.

Coverage of the directory is broadly based, and individuals listed include: businessmen, diplomats, politicians, bankers, engineers, lawyers, judges, oil officials, physicians, scientists, religious leaders, academics, writers, journalists, artists.

Comprehensive data is supplied for each individual listed to give you the best possible contacts. The information provided includes: full name, nationality and profession/position, followed by personal details, education, career history, membership of professional associations, languages, personal interests and leisure activities, full contact address with telephone and telex numbers, where available.

This Directory could save you considerable time in developing a range of valuable contacts.
