• The walk is positive and creates a social movement that is aimed at the community coming together for the increased awareness and the greater good.

• Remove the taboo and shame shrouding mental illness and suicide.• Empower individuals with lived experience to seek help for themselves, including

the workplace.• Create a unique, safe, upbeat and entertaining event that connects people, and

encourages conversation and action.• Create an ongoing community of Walk for Awareness Warriors!

FOUNDERS OF MAF & WFA

VASILE BROTHERS

Brisbane brothers Wesley & Tudor Vasile teamed up in 2011 to set out to pay tribute to their two friends Christian and David who they lost to suicide.

The Walk for Awareness (WFA) was designed to bring a group of people together to discuss depression and suicide, and the conclusion of the group was that suicide was a taboo subject .

Why hadn’t any of their other friends discussed it, even after these two tragic deaths?

This is where the group came up with the idea of Walk for Awareness and establishment of the Mental Awareness Foundation (MAF).

The annual Walk for Awareness was to bring people together in a friendly environment where the issues of mental health could be discussed openly with friends, family and supportive strangers.

It was based on the belief that the matters surrounding suicide and depression should be talked about, not shut away.

Mental Awareness Foundation’s Walk for Awareness is a community event that has social influence at a local level. We work with influencers, local sports people and government to bring this event to live and create a positive experience for walkers on the day.
