YEAR 11 STUDENTS

ONLY 7 SCHOOL DAYS

TO YOUR FIRST EXAM!

Lord Grey recently raised a grand total of £943.55 for Sports Relief. Congratulations to everyone who took part and donated,

a tremendous achievement.

On Wednesday 11 April we welcomed a party of Spanish students and teachers to Lord Grey Academy for the return visit of the annual Spanish exchange. The Spanish students spent a week with host families and enjoyed various different trips and visits, the highlight being a day trip to London with their partners. The Spanish students had a fantastic week in Bletchley and learnt lots about British culture. We would like to thank parents, staff and students for making our guests feel welcome. Keep an eye out for the launch of the Spanish exchange 2019 in the newsletter soon. More photographs on the following page.

Photographs showing some of the exciting trips all students enjoyed during the visit.

“I enjoyed Andrea staying with me; she was very polite and nice. She helped me do my paper round on Thursday. Sunday we went to the cinema to watch the Greatest Showman. It was a really cool film. On Tuesday we went to a restaurant called The Three Trees, the food was good and we both had rhubarb crumble with hot custard. I enjoyed London. We went to M&M World, this was really good. There was a mood change board where you stood on it and it told you what mood you were in. It also says a colour of your mood! It was strange because it was sort of right. I would love to do another exchange in the future. I liked Spain but their school was strange, they had shutters around all the windows but it was cool. The school day was different: lesson 1, 2, form, break 3 and 4 then break then lesson 5 and 6 then lunch which is home time.” Charlotte

“I enjoyed London because there were lots of interesting things to do. We went on a boat ride down the River Thames and we saw Big Ben. I enjoyed hosting Ariana because I wanted to see how she coped with life in England. The food and weather are very different here but she seemed to enjoy herself. I would really like to go to Spain again because I love learning about the Spanish traditions. Also, I like to be

adventurous and have independence.” Vicky

The Computing Corner

Welcome to the Computing Corner – Part 2

From time to time we will provide you with information that might be of help to you. This week we want to focus on Shortcut keys. Shortcut keys help provide an easier and usually quicker method of navigating and executing com-mands in computer software programs.

You can also find the shortcut keys to their most popular program by looking for underlined letters in their menus. For example, the image to the right has an underline on the "F" in File, which means you can press the Alt key and then the "F" key to access the File menu.

Below is a list of some of the most commonly used basic shortcut keys that work with almost all IBM compatible com-puters and software programs. It is highly recommended that all users keep a good reference of these shortcut keys or try to memorize them. Doing so will dramatically increase your productivity.

Now go and be more productive.

Explain the different factors that can affect food choices. (6 marks) here are many factors that could affect food choices these include religion, availability, medical conditions, ethical reasons, cost, labelling and marketing. Firstly I am going to look at religion, this is where a persons belief impacts on their food choices, some religions influence what you can and cannot eat. For example Muslims do not eat pork as they believe that a pig is a dirty unclean animal, so they would avoid foods that have pork in them. Another religion is Hinduism where they do not eat beef products because they believe cows to be sacred. Medical conditions can also impact on an individuals food choice. This is because it can cause a negative reaction within the body, this can be severe and can in some cases lead to death. Examples of medical conditions could include coeliac where an individual can not eat gluten so has to avoid food such as bread, cereal and pasta. Another medical condition would lactose intolerance. This is when an individual can not eat dairy products as they react to the sugar in the milk. Another influencing factor is seasonality, this can mean that food might not be available. The United Kingdom is impacted by seasonal foods and to ensure that demand of consumers is met it is imported in from other countries.

Paper and Cardboard examples

include cartons, bags, egg boxes,

juice cartoons, pizza boxes.

Biodegrade easily, cheap to

produce, strong yet light weight,

can be printed on.

Not water resistant.

Glass examples include jars and

bottles and jam jars.

Reusable , moisture proof.

Easily broken and is thus

dangerous to handle.

Plastic examples include bottles,

trays, pots, ready made meal

containers, yoghurt pots, water

bottles.

Easily recycled.

Is not biodegradable. Must not

be dropped as litter.

Metal examples include aluminium

pots, steel cans and tins, cans and

foil trays.

Recyclable

Year 11 Food Studies - Revision Topic Food Packaging

REDUCE: avoid packaged products and

take reusable bags when shopping.

REUSE: buy refillable products, glass

Eduqas GCSE English Literature Unseen Poetry Power and Conflict Practice Exam Paper

In this poem by Nazim Hikmet, the dropping of the atomic bomb

on Hiroshima is remembered.

Hiroshima Child I come and stand at every door

But none can hear my silent tread I knock and yet remain unseen

For I am dead for I am dead

I’m only seven though I died In Hiroshima long ago

I’m seven now as I was then When children die they do not grow

My hair was scorched by swirling flame My eyes grew dim my eyes grew blind

Death came and turned my bones to dust And that was scattered by the wind

I need no fruit I need no rice

I need no sweets nor even bread I ask for nothing for myself

For I am dead for I am dead

All that I need is that for peace You fight today you fight today

So that the children of this world Can live and grow and laugh and play

What is this poem about? This powerful poem is about a child who died in the Hiroshima bombing and is written by a Turkish poet who remembers the dropping of the atomic bomb. The poem touches on the despair that was felt over the loss of so many lives but concludes with an apparent air of hope as the peace will lead to better futures for children of the modern age.

11

In this poem by Edwin Brock, the poet looks at the variety of ways man has used to kill other human beings.

Five Ways To Kill A Man

There are many cumbersome ways to kill a man. You can make him carry a plank of wood

to the top of a hill and nail him to it. To do this properly you require a crowd of people

wearing sandals, a cock that crows, a cloak to dissect, a sponge, some vinegar and one

man to hammer the nails home.

Or you can take a length of steel, shaped and chased in a traditional way,

and attempt to pierce the metal cage he wears. But for this you need white horses,

English trees, men with bows and arrows, at least two flags, a prince, and a

castle to hold your banquet in.

Dispensing with nobility, you may, if the wind allows, blow gas at him. But then you need a mile of mud sliced through with ditches, not to mention black boots, bomb craters,

more mud, a plague of rats, a dozen songs and some round hats made of steel.

In an age of aeroplanes, you may fly

miles above your victim and dispose of him by pressing one small switch. All you then

require is an ocean to separate you, two systems of government, a nation’s scientists,

several factories, a psychopath and land that no-one needs for several years.

These are, as I began, cumbersome ways

to kill a man. Simpler, direct, and much more neat is to see that he is living somewhere in the middle

of the twentieth century, and leave him there.

What is this poem about? This poem describes the different ways man has used, from the beginning of time to the modern age to kill fellow human beings such as crucifixion, lancing, gassing, and bombing, each becoming increasingly impersonal. In the final shorter stanza the poet suggests that in the modern age man will be killed by disease, terrorism or poverty. This pessimistic vision of mankind is full of irony, sarcasm and hints of satire as the poet clearly questions the future of mankind unless there is a change for the greater good. This highly emotive poem is full of anger and regret.

12

Section C (Unseen Poetry) Answer both part (a) and part (b) You are advised to spend around 20 minutes on part (a) and 40 minutes on part (b). Read the two poems, Five Ways to Kill a Man by Edwin Brock and Hiroshima Child by Nazim Hikmet. In both of these poems the poets write about the effects of conflict. (a) Write about the poem Five Ways to Kill a Man by Edwin Brock and its effect on you (15). You may wish to consider:- What the poem is about and how it is organised. The ideas the poet may have wanted us to think about. The poet’s choice of words, phrases and images and the effects they create. How you respond to the poem. (b) Now compare Five Ways to Kill a Man by Edwin Brock with Hiroshima Child by Nazim Hikmet (25). You should compare:- What the poems are about and how they are organised. The ideas the poets may have wanted us to think about. The poets’ choice of words, phrases and images and the effects they create. How you respond to the poems. AO1 and AO2 are equally weighted.

Eduqas GCSE English Literature Unseen Poetry Love and Relationships – Practice paper

Love and Relationships

In this poem by Sinead Morrissey, the poet looks at how genetics shape identity.

Genetics

My father’s in my fingers, but my mother’s in my palms. I lift them up and look at them with pleasure –

I know my parents made me by my hands.

They may have been repelled to separate lands, to separate hemispheres, may sleep with other lovers,

but in me they touch where fingers link to palms.

With nothing left of their togetherness but friends who quarry for their image by a river,

at least I know their marriage by my hands.

I shape a chapel where a steeple stands. And when I turn it over,

my father’s by my fingers, my mother’s by my palms demure before a priest reciting psalms.

My body is their marriage register. I re-enact their wedding with my hands.

So take me with you, take up the skin’s demands

or mirroring in bodies of the future. I’ll bequeath my fingers, if you bequeath your palms.

We know our parents make us by our hands.

What is this poem about? In this poem Morrissey talks about the mark parents leave on you literally, physically and metaphorically. In this respect her parents are being celebrated even though they have divorced and moved to different places. They have given the poet her identity. The theme of memory is also looked at extensively in this work, as is the circular nature of life in this deeply touching poem that ex-plores togetherness and separation through the lens of touching.

14

In this poem, Brian Patten describes his relationship with his mother and the passage of time.

The Armada

Long long ago when everything I was told was believable

and the little I knew was less limited than now, I stretched belly down on the grass beside a pond

and to the far bank launched a child’s armada. A broken fortress of twigs,

The paper-tissue sails of galleons, the water-logged branches of submarines –

all came to ruin and were on flame In that dusk-red pond.

And you, mother, stood behind me, impatient to be going,

old at twenty-three, alone, thin overcoat flapping.

How closely the past shadows us. In a hospital a mile or so from that pond

I kneel beside your bed and, closing my eyes, reach out across forty years to touch once more

that pond’s cool surface, and it is your cool skin I’m touching; for as on a pond a child’s paper boat

was blown out of reach by the smallest gust of wind,

so too have you been blown out of reach by the smallest whisper of death,

and a childhood memory is sharpened, and the heart burns as that armada burnt,

long, long ago. What is this poem about? This poem looks at the passage of time where a son reflects on his relationship with his mother from a boating lake when he was a child to visiting her in hospital, just a mile away, forty years on where she is dying. The poem centres on the theme of loss but also looks at childhood, the passage of time and the way we conceive the present and the past. The poem is highly nostalgic and very personal and is based around the symbol of boats blowing away.

15

Spring is now upon us and treatment may be required. If you son or daughter suffers from this condition, please remember to give them medication before arriving to school. Just a gentle reminder - The school DO NOT give out drops, tablets or nasal sprays.

Health and Welfare Advisor

IMPORTANT Ban on Aerosol Sprays in School Dear Parent/Carer,

At Lord Grey Academy we take our responsibility to protect the wellbeing and health of students and staff very seriously. We are writing to you regarding a number of incidents with both staff and students having severe allergic reactions to aerosol sprays. For some members of the Lord Grey Academy community these allergic reactions are triggered by any aerosols. We feel that we must now insist that these are not brought into school.

We have had situations when students have used/sprayed with an aerosol and then entered a classroom and the chemicals/strong smells were enough to trigger severe breathing difficulties/problems. This has happened to both staff and students and on at least two occasions has led to hospital treatment.

I am sure students will understand that we cannot put the health of any member of our community at risk and ask that you work with us on this matter.

There are plenty of deodorants, such as roll on products, on the market which are not aerosols and we ask that you get your child to use these instead.

If we find aerosols on students they will be confiscated. Thank you for your help and support on this very important issue.

Nigel Handyside, Deputy Headteacher

We are very excited to be launching our new school skirt which

came into effect after the Easter holidays, 9 April 2018. This has

coincided with our move to an academy status and is part of a fresh

start approach.

In the photograph you can see it is smart and durable. It will be

enforced for students in Years 7-10, if a student chooses to wear a

skirt. Year 11 students can continue with the previous knee length

plain black skirt. Of course, all students can choose to wear tailored

black trousers if they prefer. The new skirt is only available from

one supplier (Maisies Superstore, 60-64 Church Street, Wolverton.

Telephone: 01908 313313). It can be purchased on line via the

website https://www.maisies-superstore.co.uk or purchased directly

in person, from the shop.

The Governing Body of Lord Grey have fully agreed to this new skirt

as part of our uniform. The skirt quality is exceptionally good. The

school has put aside a ‘hardship fund’ for any parents who wish to

purchase the skirt but cannot afford to do so. If any parent wishes

to be reimbursed for the purchase price, please contact Student

Services via email: [email protected] or telephone

01908 626176/167.

The skirt retails at about £24 depending on size; hence the offer of

reimbursement from the school if the cost is prohibitive for any

family. It looks exceptionally smart, it should be worn at knee

length and everyone at the school is very thrilled about its launch.

Tracey Jones, Principal.

This image is showing

a close up of the skirt,

to give you an idea of the

colour and design.
