Our primary objective as a PTSO is to provide our school with funds, programs, resources, and services that will enrich and maximize the education of every child and to benefit the school. To meet this important objective, we ask for donations and fundraiser. We have reached our goal for dues and donations and its still only September so a huge “THANK YOU” to the Logan Community for your support. Our big fundraiser is the Logan Fun Run. This is an all school event that happens during the school day on Wednesday October 16th. Look for more information in the coming weeks about how to get involved. We are also specifically fundraising for a gymnasium traverse Rock Climbing Wall that was a teacher grant request from a couple of years ago. We are excited to work towards reaching our goal of $5000 and bring this enrichment to the Logan community. Our PTSO is always in need of growth and we are seeking volunteers to con- tinue re-establishing the organization. We have planned some exciting events this year and are excited to meet some new volunteers. LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Logan Families,

The school year is off to a great start! It was wonderful seeing so many of you during our curriculum night. Teachers were able to share important information about their curriculum, and I shared information about our school improvement efforts and the Read by Grade Three Reading Law. If you were unable to attend, or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teachers or me.

Family HandbookI want to send one more reminder to families about our Family Handbook. Please take time to become familiar with its

contents. We have done our best to provide families with as much information as possible in one convenient place. The handbook can be found on Logan’s webpage. Here is the link. If you would like a paper copy, we would be happy to provide you with one.

Logan Fun RunOur annual Fun Run is Wednesday, October 16. The Logan PTSO organizes the Fun Run every year to promote physical

fitness and build community at our school. During the Fun Run, students will run laps on our upper elementary playground and earn bracelets for each lap they complete. The Fun Run is also an important fundraiser, and we hope you will consider donating. Money raised by the PTSO pays for class supplies, field trips, enrichment activities, and so much more. You should have received information in your child’s Friday Folder. We have also included information about the Fun Run in the weekly eBackpack.

The Salad Bar at Logan

In previous years, Chartwells (Ann Arbor Public Schools’ food service provider) has made the salad bar in the cafeteria available to all students. However, there has been a change in district policy, and the salad bar is now only available to stu-dents who get lunch here at school. Students who bring their lunch from home will not be allowed to go to the salad bar. I wanted to be sure families were aware of this change so you can pack extra food in your child’s lunch if needed.

Logan Bond PresentationI hope you received my previous announcement about the change to the bond presentation date. It was originally sched-

uled for Thursday, October 17, but it has been rescheduled for Wednesday, October 2 during our PTSO meeting. The PTSO meeting begins at 9:00am in the mini-theater, and the bond presentation will begin at about 9:45am. We hope many of you will be able to attend to learn more about the upcoming bond.

Parking Lot SafetyPlease remember to drive through the parking lot with great caution when dropping off and picking up. If you use the par-

ent drop-off/pick-up line, please pull as far forward as possible. In addition, please do not park in the handicapped spaces unless you have a permit to do so. We have families who need these spaces and struggle when someone is parked illegally.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Sincerely,Will Wright

UPCOMING DATES:* Wednesday, October 2 – Count Day

BACK TO SCHOOL

WELCOME

October 2019 4Logan Ledger |

At school, Abbey enjoys free writ-ing, science, and recess! When she isn’t at school, she can be found playing outside, hunting for in-sects, drawing, ice skating, study-ing Japanese, playing school with her sisters, or spending time with her family, including 20 cousins! Abbey aspires to be an elemen-tary school teacher or a scientist when she grows up.

About Our Student Reporter

Abbey VanderWerp

Grade: 5Teacher: Mr. Totsuka

Where did you grow up?

I was born in Texas and lived there for one year. My grandma would want me to acknowledge my Texas roots. Then my family moved to Bing-hamton, New York where I grew up.

How many siblings do you have?

I have one older sister, named April.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

I had a video game system called Sega. I liked to play Sega Hockey with my friends. My mom didn’t really limit my “screen time” so I played it a lot.

What was your favorite show to watch when you were a child?

Animaniacs! Now I watch it on Hulu with my youngest daughter. I can sing the theme song.

What college did you attend?

I first attended Hamilton College in New York where I earned a Geology degree. I also attended Michigan State University and Columbia in New York City.

When and Why did you decide to be-come a principal? Were you a teach-er first?

My first plan was to become a geolo-gist. After I graduated from Hamilton College, I taught elementary school science at Trinity School which is where I decided to go back to school for my teaching degree. I was a teach-er for 13 years. I decided to become a principal because I wanted to make

schools great.

If you had to be a substitute for a special, what would it be and why?

Gym! I really like running around and playing games. When I was a teacher, I liked to play soccer at recess with my students.

What is your favorite food?

Hamburgers! Juicy, good hamburgers. I really like the ones at Zingerman’s Roadhouse.

What are your hobbies?

Driving my kids to activities. Just kid-ding. I enjoy building things. I recent-ly built a deck and just finished build-ing a fence this past weekend.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

I like that my job involves getting to hang out with kids everyday. I like working with the staff at Logan.

“Gym! I really like running around and playing games. When I was a teacher, I liked to play soccer at recess with my students.”

LOGAN STUDENT COUNCILWe are very happy to announce our 2019-2020 Logan Student Council Representatives.

We are so happy that you all continue to be leaders at Lo-gan Elementary, following the 4Rs: Responsibility, Respect, Resourcefulness and Reflec-tion. Remember, throughout this school year, you will have multiple opportunities to be in-volved in service projects and evening events. Representa-tives help to create the activi-ties and projects, but we need YOU (ALL LOGAN STUDENTS) to help make them successful!

What is the Student Council?

Student Council is a group of elected and volunteer students here at Logan. They work to-gether with two adult advisors (Ms. Jackson & Mrs. Stewart) to assist with school affairs and activities, as well as com-munity service and relations. Through projects and activi-ties, Student Council works to promote Citizenship, Scholar-ship, Leadership, Human Rela-tions, and Cultural Values.

This year we will kick off Oc-tober with our first initiative: Cards for Cancer, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. We are looking for-ward to an amazing year of ser-vice and leadership! Thank you again everyone, Mrs. Stewart and Ms. Jackson are proud of your hard work and dedication to Logan Elementary!

Thank you to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who ran for Stu-dent Council this year.
