MIAMI — A love of students and a passion to see them succeed are two hallmarks of Miami Public School’s District-Wide Teacher of the Year and the Angie Douthit “Heart of A Wardog” award winners.

“The staff at Roos-evelt Elementary School regularly communicates how David goes above and beyond,” Hogan said. “ He’s usually the first person that greets students and staff when they arrive, and typically still hard at work when they leave.

“His warm personality and jokes result in many smiles per day. Like Angie, David is strong in his faith, love and care for students, and is a high performer in his craft. David is the bedrock of Roosevelt Elementary School, we are so appreciative of him.”

• District Teacher of the Year

This year’s MPS District Teacher of the Year, Lamb, joined the district 16 years ago. She is now in her fourth year at Will Rogers Middle School, spending

the first 11 years as a first grade teacher, and one year teaching music at the four elementary schools.

As a mid-school teacher, Lamb teaches choir and ukulele to sixth, seventh and eighth graders.

“I never thought I would like middle schoolers,” Lamb said with a grin. “When I subbed, I hated middle school. But now I absolutely love [them]. They are so fun.”

Lamb, who came to teaching after working in a variety of office jobs, said her primary goal each day is to “love on her kids.”

“That’s my mission here,” Lamb said. “I don’t care if you can’t sing, that’s a bonus. A lot of my day is spent building relation-ships with kids.”

Initially, Lamb taught vocal lessons with her students. A desire to help reach students in a differ-ent way led her to develop a ukulele class. Knowing how to play a mandolin,

Lamb taught herself the basics of another stringed instrument three years ago as she worked with the first group of 11 students. This year she has 20 in the class.

“No matter what, every kid is capable of doing some-thing, and sometimes they are good at music,” Lamb said. “A student who can’t read well, might be really good with the ukulele.”

More about Lamb

Lamb and her husband Greg, married 21 years ago. The pair have two children, Rayanna, a senior, and Ronan, a seventh grader.

Lamb moved to Miami in 1992 to be near Greg after studying at Cottey College in Nevada, Mis-souri. She later completed her associates degree at Northeastern A&M Col-lege in Miami.

After working at several jobs, including a stint selling classified ads at the Miami News Record, Lamb decided to complete

her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She taught first grade at Roosevelt for one year, and Wilson for 10 years.

“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Lamb said. “It’s such a balancing act, teaching kids that age. It’s like a Chinese juggler, spin-ning plates. But the things I learned to do, in my tool belt, is what I use in my music classroom.”

Lamb said teaching stu-dents to read, is the most rewarding thing she’s done in her life. She uses those skills to help students learn to read music.

“Choral reading is huge in choir,” Lamb said, adding that skills learned in her class often help students improve their reading skills in general.”

For one year, Lamb taught music in all four ele-mentary schools. A chance to plant in one classroom, at the middle school, giving her the ability to build last-ing relationships, led her to move to the mid school.

Lamb said watching her father, Neil Pasco as he worked as a special education teacher, taught her the value of building relationships.

“I’m a relationship person,” Lamb said. “Life is all about relationships. I get to love anywhere between 90 and 150 students each day.

“I know it sounds silly, but I get to do this job every day. I get to come in and talk to these kids. I found my niche, this is my happy place.”

Life-long love of music

Lamb sang her first solo at the age of 4. She took eight years of piano lessons — enough to be “danger-ous” when it comes to playing for her students.

This year, due to COVID-19, she’s focusing on teaching students to sight read music. They also hum out the music, sitting 12 feet apart.

As a twist, Lamb is also exposing her students to a variety of vocal art-ists through an idea she found online — a National Anthem DeathMatch.

Each day, the students watch a different “match up” of musicians singing the national anthem at a Super Bowl game. Using a bracket similar to March Madness, students have a chance to vote via a Google Form for their favorite musician performing the anthem during the past 20 years of games.

“It’s really kind of excit-ing,” Lamb said. “They spend their day doing a listening exercise — it’s not just a popularity contest because it’s got a lot of dif-ferent people.”

She sees the contest, which pairs everyone from Aretha Franklin and Billy Joel, against Mariah Carey and Beyonce, as a way to help students broaden their musical horizons.

“They really get stuck in their own genres,” Lamb said, saying it provides them with a taste of a music appreciation class.

Recognized by peers

Lamb said it “blew her mind” to receive the honor at Will Rogers Middle School. To earn the district title, she said, is “very humbling.”

“All I’m doing all day long is loving kids,” Lamb said. “The fact that my peers have seen me do good things, enough to put my name out there, Wow.”

Lamb said she never expected, as a specials teacher, to earn the award, admitting she cried after Hogan presented the award. Several members of the district, including retired teachers, are help-ing Lamb prepare for the State Teacher of the Year competition.

• Heart of a Wardog

This year’s Angie Douthit “Heart of a Wardog’” award recipient, Jones, has worked for MPS for the past seven and half years. He joined the district’s custodial/maintenance staff after spending 31 years with Wonder Bread.

“For 30 years, I worked for myself, now I work for others,” Jones said. “The smiles I get from the kids and the hugs make up a lot. I never thought I would do this kind of work. I consider [everyone] my family — and they spoil me rotten.”

Jones works primarily at Roosevelt Elementary. He also is in charge of the Central Office facilities. While at Roosevelt, Jones worked alongside the late Angie Douthit, for whom the award is named.

“We would talk and inspire one another,” Jones said. “Even when she was in pain, she could turn the smile on, and love on the kids. I can’t begin to fill her shoes.”

Jones said it is “very humbling” to receive the award named after his friend.

“I didn’t expect it,” he said. “I am who I am. I work because I love the kids. I’m where God has placed me.

“Angie really inspired me in a lot of ways, the way she loved the kids and lived out her faith.”

Jones said like Douthit, he has a desire to live out his faith in everyday life.

“When I do something, I do it to the best of my ability,” Jones said. “I do it to show the kids they are loved, treating all of the kids in an equal and fair way. They know they can count on Mr. Dave. They raise their hand and I’m there.”

Jones said he loves the “safest, most loving environment” created by the team at Roosevelt — from administration to custodian.

“I could not do all that I do here, without the teachers, aides, counselors, everyone,” Jones said. “It’s a team effort here, and it’s evident it comes from the top down.”

More about Jones

Jones moved to Miami in 1988 from San Anto-nio, Texas, to work with Wonder Bread. He lived in a variety of places grow-ing up, because his father was in the U.S. Air Force. He attended high school at East Newton in Granby, Missouri, before attending Southwest Baptist for one year.

Jones’ wife, Janice, is the head cook at Roosevelt. Earlier this school year, Janice was honored with the Support Staff of the Year award at Roosevelt.

The pair have been married for 41 years. They have two daughters — Jennifer McLaughlin, a teacher in Wyandotte, and Jessica Blaylock, who works as the frozen food manager for Marvin’s in Miami. The Jones have four granddaughters and one grandson.

Outside of school, Jones serves as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Miami. He said it’s another piece of how he lives out his faith.

“The only thing that really matters is that we hear ‘well done’ by our creator,” Jones said. “I do everything to the best of my ability.”

Jones said he was hum-bled to receive the Heart of a Wardog award.

“I’m 62 years old, I’m healthy,” Jones said. “God gives me strength to love others and do what I do.”

HONORSCONTINUED FROM A1

DEAR ABBY: My hus-band and I are both enlisted Army (he — 20 years, two Iraq deployments; I — 15 years, one Iraq deploy-ment). We met in the service and have been mar-ried for 10 years.

Three years after our wedding, my husband told me he was no longer

physically attracted to me. It hurt. A lot. It has been seven years since that day, and we’re still together. I don’t feel loved, appreciated or valued. I’m a logic-driven person. Emotions don’t come easy for me. I have always been open about my thoughts and feelings, even the painful ones.

Since that day, I resent him, and I have told him such. He doesn’t under-stand why I can’t just “get over it” and continue to live our lives. He has refused therapy multiple times. I don’t have a family of my own, and we have no children together. Must I appreciate the friendship

we have, or is it time to push for a meet-in-the-middle resolution? — UNAPPRECIATED IN PENNSYLVANIA

DEAR UNAPPRECI-ATED: That you would feel resentment after what your husband told you is normal. It appears that intimacy is either unimportant to him,

or he is finding it elsewhere.Your self-esteem may

be below ground level, but you have a right to be able to feel loved, appreciated and valued. Since you are receiving none of those, there is no “meeting in the middle.” Where you need to meet is a lawyer’s office so you can officially end a

They were the first to surround black music with elaborate produc-tion values, enhancing its emotional power with the Drifters in “There Goes My Baby” (1958), which influenced Phil Spector, who studied their produc-tions while playing guitar on their sessions.

Leiber and Stoller wrote hits for Elvis Presley, including “Love Me” (1956), “Jailhouse Rock” (1957), and “Loving You,” “Don’t,” and “King Creole.”

They also collaborated with other writers on such songs as “On Broadway,” written with Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil; “Stand By Me,” written with Ben E. King; “Young Blood,” written with Doc Pomus, and “Spanish Harlem,” co-written by Leiber and Phil Spector.

They were sometimes credited under the pseud-onym “Elmo Glick.” In 1964, they launched Red Bird Records with George Goldner and, focusing on

the “girl group” sound, released some of the great-est classics of the Brill Building period.

MLTCONTINUED FROM A1

Okay, so yeah we’re what, two weeks into the year,

but guys, I do believe the beginning of 2021 almost outdid all of 2020. And we all know how 2020 went.

If you’ve been read-ing, you know we moved back to Miami just before Christmas. The house had smart thermostats and in my attempt to set them up under my own account and not the previous owners’, something went horribly wrong. Long story short, the day after Christmas we had an HVAC fella out who discovered that the reason we’d been so horribly cold for the previous four days was because our heat pump had been stuck on AC. Then in the discovery of that mess it was revealed that the heat pump wasn’t as new as we had been led to believe. That was an eventful Saturday — we got the old heat pump operat-ing correctly, ordered a new heat pump, got our new washer and dryer, and ….that evening we were exposed to COVID. Now, I’d been exposed to COVID a few times, but

this time actually stuck.I developed symptoms

on a Tuesday night, tested positive the following morning and it’s been two weeks since. Out of Paul, me, our three kids, their spouses/fiancés and the grandgirls, we ALL ended up with it. And eventually most of my sister’s crew ended up positive as well. Thank God Mom and Pops remain unscathed and safe. I have never been so sick in my life. I got flu that went into pneumonia a few years ago and was one step out of the hospital with that. I got an abscess with a healthy dose of diverticuli-tis, went septic and ended up hospitalized with that. But during both of those previous illnesses never did I ever fear for my life the way I did with COVID. I spent two days writing let-ters to my family because I was 100% convinced I was not going to survive and that was terrifying. I am not being dramatic when I share that with you — I am being as authentic as I know to be. I was scared.

The symptoms ranged from things as odd and

bizarre as bleeding gums to brain fog, from horrendous gastrointestinal symptoms to burning sinuses and chemical smells, breathing problems and shortness of breath, from nerve pain to depression and anger and of course, the ever-popular loss of taste and smell. I haven’t smelled much of anything in two weeks. Every day’s group chat check-in involves a sound-off of symptoms and who can smell and taste what. So far the absolutely debilitat-ing fatigue is what seems to be lingering for most of us. I don’t ever actually sleep in the afternoons, but I have to at least rest awhile just to make it through the day.

Sadly, in the midst of all of the covid sickness and being isolated, Paul’s mother passed away. As if it wasn’t sad enough, Paul not being able to be there with his brothers was the hardest. The sad-ness, depression, darkness was just ever-present and suffocating. However, our kids rallied around us and loved on us with such fierceness, it helped so much. I guess that was

a positive of us all having COVID — we could at least be together even if we felt bad while we were. One evening involved taking turns sliding down the stairs on a crib mattress. Of course, all I could do was sit on the couch and laugh and cough, but that laughter and togetherness was healing. One of my favorite lines from the play “Steel Magnolias” is this: “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.”

Sometimes we laugh. Sometimes we cry. Some-times we do them at the same time. But man, when we have each other, it sure does make it easier to get through.

Jessica Milberger, CHES/Health Educator III, with the Oklahoma State Department of Health, District 4 (Ottawa, Craig, Delaware, Mayes, Rogers, Wagoner, and Washing-ton Counties), said in a statement, “With so much information being circu-lated, we believe the fastest

most efficient way to get accurate information out into the community is by utilizing technology. Fol-lowing your local county health department on Facebook can be the key to staying up to date with the most current information.”

To create a Facebook account you can down-load the Facebook app or go to www.facebook.com and then click “create new account.” Enter your first

and last name and either your mobile phone number or e-mail and then create a password.

You will then be sent a verification code to either your e-mail or phone number. Then, using “search Facebook” in the upper left hand corner, search for your local county health department’s page. For the Ottawa County Health Department,

the Facebook address is https://www.facebook.com/OttawaCHD

If you are having issues setting up your Facebook account you may want to ask a family member or friend for help.

“We thank our com-munity for being active about receiving their COVID-19 vaccine and ask that individuals be patient with us during this time,” Milberger said.

Last week’s attack on the U.S. Capitol was a horrific, dark day for our country.

While we saw the worst in some, we also saw the best in others. Law enforcement officers, especially those with the U.S. Capitol Police and Sergeant at Arms, put their lives on the line to protect others and I will be forever grateful for their service.

Their actions that day were nothing short of heroic. They were greatly outnumbered and did the absolutely best they could, given the situation they found themselves in. When I visited the triage center shortly after the attack began, I saw many officers who were badly injured during the attack and they will be forever changed.

Tragically, we lost two members

of the U.S. Capitol Police after the attack, Officer Brian Sicknick and Officer Howard Liebengood. I am heartbroken by the loss of these two courageous officers, but we will never forget the sacrifice they made as well as the sacrifice their families made.

The U.S. Capitol Police, like all

other law enforcement officers, deserve not only our thanks, but also our full support. They sacri-fice holidays, weekends, and other precious time with family and friends to serve the public.

Congress simply could not do what we do in Washington, DC without them. I will always sup-port these heroes and I am proud to call many of them dear friends.

Harvard Law School Pro-fessor Laurence Tribe referred, in a recent

tweet, to a group of GOP sena-tors who intended to object to the certification of the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the “Treacherous Eleven.”

After the capitol was overrun by insurrectionists, fomented by the President of the United States, only six senators continued their cowardly kowtowing to the lead insurrectionist — Donald Trump. The “Seditious Six,” led by Sena-tors Ted Cruz of Texas and Josh Howley of Missouri also included Roger Marshall (KS), John Ken-nedy (LA), Cindy Hyde-Smith (MS) and Tommy Tuberville (AL).

Sedition is a federal crime — “Whoever incites, sets on foot, assists, or engages in any rebellion or insurrection against the author-ity of the United States or the laws thereof, or gives aid or comfort thereto, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.”

The sole purpose of the Elec-toral College objection was to win favor with a disgraced lame duck president — a man who only days earlier berated, cajoled and threatened the Georgia Secretary of State in an effort to find 11,780 votes to overturn the state’s elec-tion results. The same defeated “wannabe-tyrant” who on Jan. 6, 2021 directed a raucous group of Trumpsters to march on the capitol building.

These six senators are any-thing but profiles in courage. They challenged the results of the presidential election without any legitimate basis and without any possibility of success. The

“Seditious Six” cowered in the face of unrelenting pressure from the president and his delusional supporters.

On Dec. 18, 1963, only weeks after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, his brother Robert wrote a new forward to Kennedy’s Pulitzer Prize winning book, “Profiles in Courage.” The first line of the forward is “Cour-age is the virtue that President Kennedy most admired.”

In 1956, as a Senator from Massachusetts, Kennedy wrote “Profiles in Courage.” Kennedy told the story of eight sena-tors who acted on principle and national interest even though it put their own political careers at risk. As Robert Kennedy wrote in his forward, “It is a study of men who, at risk to themselves, their futures, even the well-being of their children, stood fast for principle.”

Kennedy wrote about Sen. Daniel Webster of Massachusetts. Webster was opposed to slavery. He saw the Compromise of 1850 as a way of averting national discord, preserving national unity and preventing the south from seceding. His vote placed him at odds with his anti-slavery supporters and his party, and ended any chance of Webster

being president. He said following his vote, “No man can suffer too much, and no man can fall too soon, if he suffers or if he fall in defense of the liberties and Con-stitution of his country.”

Another profile in courage was Sen. Edmund G. Ross. The newly-elected Republican senator from Kansas, who followed his conscience — in defiance of his party — and cast the deciding vote against the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. After being pressured by constituents to vote for Johnson’s removal he wrote, “I have taken an oath to do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws, and trust that I shall have the courage to vote according to the dictates of my judgment and for the highest good of the country.” The voters of Kansas did not return Ross to the senate.

Kennedy examined the career of Sen. George Norris of Nebraska who split with his party and constituency on the issue of the presidency. Norris was a “dry,” Protestant, Midwestern-Repub-lican. In 1928, he supported Al Smith, a big-city Democrat who happened to be Catholic and against Prohibition. He said at the time, “shall we be so partisan that we will place our party above our country.”

The siege of Jan. 6, 2021 could have been avoided if the Seditious Six would have put country before party; duty before ambition; truth before fiction. This country cannot, and should not, forget the Seditious Six.

Fever: Although a fever technically is any body temperature above

the normal of 98.6 F (37 C), in practice a person is usually not considered to have a significant fever until the temperature is above 100.4 F (38 C).

Fever is part of the body’s own disease-fighting arsenal: rising body temperatures apparently are capable of killing off many disease- producing organisms. For that reason, low fevers should normally go untreated, although you may need to see your doctor to be sure if the fever is accompa-nied by any other troubling symptoms.

Yesterday my eyes were tired, I was sore to move, and I felt totally like AM, the nickname for the fellow in Vinita who moved at a speed that was hard to detect much move-ment at all. (Vinita’s kids were hard on each other and gave nicknames that would follow you throughout your life) AM’s nickname was short for “Ambitious” because these boys didn’t think he had any. So for the last 2 days I was totally “AM.” But there was a moment when I was thinking about last week’s actions at the Capitol and thought about a technique I learned from Paula Englander Golden. She taught us how the take the temperature of a group. Not with a thermometer of course, but by asking and taking time to listen to how people were at a particular moment of time.

What if someone could have stopped the feverish crowd last week and taken time to listen and to be listened to. What if by talking and discussing truths, perhaps real truth could have been honored?

I was able to take the temper-ature of lots of different groups through the years. Our country had a temperature last week. We were beat into a frenzy. Even though there were thou-sands of “patriots” activated to invade the capitol, they did so in defense of a lie. Definition of fever pitch: a state of intense excitement and agitation; an example of fever pitch in a sen-tence: “I worked myself up to a fever pitch of enthusiasm.”

A lie doesn’t become truth, wrong doesn’t become right, and evil doesn’t become good just because its accepted by a majority. Booker T. Washington

And that day on the steps of the Capitol and those who broke windows and doors did so in a fever.

Yesterday after

acknowledging my personal symptoms I hunted down the lone thermometer in my house. It proved along with the symptoms and no AMBITION that I did have a fever. My Dad always told me if I sucked on a “fever stick” long enough I would get well. That is what I have been doing the last few days, and I think it is finally starting to work.

Rest and clear fluids, and dash of cranberry juice will get me though.

Passion is a sort of fever in the mind, which ever leaves us weaker than it found us. Wil-liam Penn

What will it take for our country?

Calming thoughts can be a cure. There has to be a change in our hearts. But we have to start with what we listen to, and what we see and take in to be true. But we cannot rule out justice. We have been wronged.

Perhaps by people you care most dearly. There will be consequences, and some of that has begun. Some will be put on the “no fly list” for life. Some will be arrested. Some will try to gain fame from the actions they took at the capitol. They had a fever. And that fever could have been fatal to this country, our democracy just like our bodies are fragile. The miracle each of us is, the amazing parts and systems we have that crisscross and allow us to get up in the morning and have the ultimate opportunity to make that day the best it can be, for us personally and for the real live chance to do for others just because.

This fever will pass. We can drink those fluids, bundle up in our beds and keep thinking ‘well’ thoughts but Rudyard Kipling nailed it when he said, “Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by man-kind.” And perhaps taking time to visit with your neighbors and relatives and talk through the trauma and the feverish feelings they may have been experiencing. We can lower the temperature by using that powerful drug, WORDS.

Respectfully Submitted ~ Rebecca Jim

CHURCH NOTES

Miami FriendsMiami FriendsMiami Friends Church pastor David

Frazier shared this Sunday a message, “The Greatest.” A desire for greatness is not the evil here — it’s setting yourself above another person.

Then his disciples began arguing about which of them was the greatest. But Jesus knew their thoughts, so he brought a little child to his side. Then he said to them, “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me also welcomes my Father who sent me. Whoever is the least among you is the greatest.” Luke 9:46-48 NLT

The way of the kingdom is like welcom-ing a child — being fully present and fully open with no agenda. Members of the Kingdom of God pursue service and selflessness because that’s what Jesus dem-onstrated. What would it look like if our community became obsessed with the idea of the Kingdom of God — everything we consumed was about it and everything we did was motivated by it?

-Following Jesus is about bringing light to the world…it’s NEVER about manipula-tion or dominance.

-the Kingdom of God is to be ushered in

through “openness, lack of pretense, and the powerlessness of a child…”

They say that only two things in life are certain: death

and taxes. In reality, there are many more things which are certain in life. I want to share three of them with you, today.

The first thing that we can be absolutely certain about is God’s love for all people. Romans 5:8 says, “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

This verse tells us that, even as most of mankind harbored an uncaring attitude toward God, he sacrificed his son for ALL people. Jesus went to the cross, knowing full-well that many would reject

him, and even curse his name. However you feel about him, God loves YOU.

The second thing of which we can have total certainty is God’s forgive-ness for those who want to change. In Acts 3:18-20, the Apostle Peter encouraged people in this way: “But

what God foretold by the mouth of all the proph-ets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus”. To repent means to turn away from a former way of life; to change. When anyone comes to Christ, willing to turn from their sin and turn to him, God ALWAYS forgives.

Finally, we can be certain about God’s call on the lives of his people. Ephesians 2:10 refers to Christians as “God’s work-manship”, and says we were

created to do good things. 1 Peter 2:9 describes God’s people as “chosen”, “royal” and “holy”, and says that our purpose is to tell others of his greatness. God has a purpose for all people, but they must accept his love and repent of doing things their way in order to receive his purpose and plan.

Is God’s unconditional love, complete forgive-ness and eternal purpose appealing to you? You can have it ALL, at the very moment you surrender to Jesus as your Savior and Lord.

Three constants in life

In February I’m always interested in what the groundhog,

or woodchuck, called Punxsutawney Phil has to say about the weather. Once a year, he lets us all know if there will be six more weeks of winter. This event, known as Groundhog Day, always reminds me of the movie with the same name. In the movie, Phil Connors, an arrogant egocentric weatherman finds himself in a time loop, repeating the same day over and over again during a hated assignment. Eventually he discovers that he has the choice to act differ-ently, and that changes the pattern of each day. Each day is the same, yet different. However, just making changes doesn’t release him from the time loop. It’s when his choices include opening his heart to his co-worker, Rita, and to doing good deeds for others, that he escapes — because he is a changed man.

This brings me to the fact that things are not always what they appear to be. We all know that Phil will declare six more weeks of winter. On some days with the wind blowing, snow falling, and temperatures in the teens, it does appear that yes, there will be six more weeks of what looks like winter. However, actually, spring is already here. The signs are subtle, but if one is paying attention, they are obvious.

For me, the first sign comes from the birds. Just a few days before the end of January, I witness people filling up their bird feeders, and I see the daffodils peeking out of the winter soil. The trees are budding, and bushes are turning green. The sun is staying up longer. There are signs all around us that say, “Change is in the air!” This brings me back to Groundhog Day, and choices.

Aren’t there days when we wake up and think the same thoughts we had the day before? We see the same day stretched out before us. The same worries, the same expectations, the same words spoken, the same outcomes expected. How can we expect to escape

that time loop if we don’t change first? That change comes from a change of choice.

It doesn’t take much of a perception shift to change the unfolding of a new day. We can practice changing one thought at a time to a different idea, a different expecta-tion, a different point of view, and watch the pattern of the day shift with that change. Perhaps it feels like winter in our lives. However, we can remember that what we see is not always what is going on. Listen! There is a different song in the air. There is sharing, help-ing, and living out our purposes in life.

Groundhog Day is a wonderful reminder that change comes from within, one choice at a time. It’s not that we are going to create something new and wonderful. There is no need for that kind of work. The One Creator has already prepared a perfect day for us. All we need to do is stop the habits that show us a picture, a day, stuck in what is not working. We change. We let go of what is not working, and see what is. We become grate-ful for what is present, and that opens our hearts to see the grand design, where each of us, by living out our unique spiritual blessing, fulfills the needs of one another in one ongoing spiral of love.

By the way, did you know that groundhogs are also called Subterra-nean Whistle Pigs? This is because they make a cute little whistle. See, things are not always what they appear to be.

THINKING OUT LOUD:

Groundhog Day

Dear Pastor, Once we feel the tan-gible presence

of God, why is it still so easy to walk away?

A: Anything can be taken for granted, my friend, even the presence of God.

Countless husbands and wives, tearfully devoted at the wedding vows, find themselves in sordid affairs 20 years later. Children reared on the leisure of a family trust run through the money and suddenly awaken, alone and penniless in their 40s. Olympian athletes devolve into anti-Amer-ican politicians with raging tempers, immoral lives and shame. Lottery winners of millions are destitute inside of four years. What happened in these tragic scenarios? People failed to acknowl-edge their gift from God was a priceless treasure to be stewarded. They didn’t know what they had until it was already gone. They got comfort-able, entitled and lost sight of the truth. They took the Lord’s blessing for granted and forgot how special it was.

I’m sure your ques-tion intrigues folks who wonder what God’s tan-gible presence feels like: Thankfully, opportunities to engage the Holy Spirit are as vibrant as ever inside our personal jour-ney. He lavishes himself on anyone who wants to know him; asking him for an encounter is a great start. What hap-pens when the presence of God comes? His tan-gible presence often heals pain and disease, makes the impossible look logical and it changes the atmosphere of any environment. It dissolves loneliness, depression and rejection — the three ingredients to a broken, human spirit. The Holy Spirit (the Comforter; the Presence) solves problems, invents solu-tions and makes a way through any difficulty. Our old friend Isaiah the prophet knew the value of encountering God and he pleads, “Turn to the LORD! He can still be found. Call out to God! He is near” (Isaiah 55:6, CEV).

God’s tangible pres-ence accompanies authentic worship, most

of all. However, just like the relationships we have with friends, family or coworkers, the depth in which we experience God will depend on the level we invest. If we want to hear from him, we must read what he wrote (the Bible) and train our mind toward his voice. If we want to feel his touch, we must practice providing God with a sacred space to visit us, using our time and devotion as bait. I compare a touch from the Holy Spirit to a but-terfly who has alighted on my arm; some say it is like a dove on the shoul-der. It is tender, precious and easy to miss if we are not looking for it.

Fortunately, God is always a bigger giver of his time, attention and touch, than we are. According to the Apostle John, he is continually in hot pursuit: “So you see, our love for him comes as a result of his loving us first” (1 John 4:19, TLB). When we seek the Lord in kind, we simply draw him closer, faster and with tangible results. His presence comes to us on his terms alone, but it

is often secured through our relentless search of him.

In spite of the wonders of God’s supernatural visits, human beings still have the choice to walk away from him, and they often do. The problem is systemic: Our ancestors, Adam and Eve, enjoyed the physical presence of God every day and still chose a life away from him. We’re flawed people who were given free will and we don’t often use it correctly. Yet this fact makes our connection to God all the more spe-cial when we persevere to stay engaged. We’re saying, “I value you, God. I’m still devoted to you,” every time we focus on him. And he comes to reward us with a big hug.

stretchy clothes, which can be purchased from the store of your choice (including thrift stores), though more personaliza-tion of the cutouts can be a lot of fun.

Stotts requested the commissioners’ approval to host the event, which was approved, and also said that there will be food trucks and more on April 30, including a Cruise Night event that evening. Details are still being final-ized and more information will be available soon. The clothes the wooden children are dressed in will be donated to local foster children after the event.

“This was our first stop…our first time to go public with our plan for this event…because we wanted

to secure the date and loca-tion with the county. And we also meet this week to secure the information on the Cruise Night we have planned,” Stotts said.

The CASA movement is central to fulfilling society’s most fundamental obligation by making sure a qualified, compassion-ate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the safe embrace of a loving family.

“We are excited to have the community’s sup-port to roll out this new event where we can bring awareness and support for the abused and neglected children of our community. It’s going to be fun and it’s going to be a great time for a great cause,” Stotts continued.

“And we are so happy to have the support of

the county commission-ers, especially the newest commissioner, Steven Chasteen. He came over and spent time with us at our office across the street from the courthouse. It was really nice for him to spend time with us and learn about this important organization that serves the community.”

Stotts also said that they are going to come up with an official name for their event, other than “wooden children,” and that more information will be pub-lished as details become available.

CASA of Northeast Oklahoma began May 1, 1995, as Tri-County CASA, serving the courts of the 12th Judicial District in Rogers, Mayes, and Craig Counties. On Sept. 22, 2015, the organization expanded to serve the 13th Judicial District in Ottawa

and Delaware Counties, including the addition of a tribal CASA program in the Quapaw Nation’s tribal court in August 2017.

In fiscal year 2019, CASA of Northeast Oklahoma was the fastest-growing CASA program in the state.

CASA is a nonprofit organization and their offices in Miami are open by appointment only.

Due to COVID-19, in order to enter the offices you must answer five health-related questions in the negative, wear a mask, and socially distance from the staff.

They are also happy to help you by phone or e-mail. Call 918-544-6452 or 918-923-7276 or e-mail [email protected] for more information or to make an appointment. And CASA is always looking for volunteers.

For more information, visit www.casaneok.org or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/CASANEOK. CASA is located at 103 E. Central, Suite 500.

In the commissioners’ reports, Chasteen reported that there had been a vehicle accident in district #2 involving a county vehicle that was struck while sitting at a stoplight. The other driver did not have insurance.

Chasteen also requested that an agenda item be added for a future meet-ing to discuss the county’s weekly meetings that are available to the public online, and the possibility of adding a one-click link on the county’s website that would take viewers directly to the meeting site.

In other matters, Sheriff David Dean reported that

an inmate gained access through a wall and broke a water pipe at the jail last week that will be repaired, and added that a heat and air unit at the jail also failed and will have to be replaced.

And the commission-ers recognized local teen Berkeley C. Ulrey at the meeting for his recent participation in the Duke University’s Talent Identi-fication Program (TIP) 7th grade talent search. The official letter from the uni-versity in Durham, North Carolina, read, “Con-gratulations! We’re glad you are a part of the Duke TIP family. Enclosed you will find your certificate of merit for participating. Your academic achieve-ments are commendable, and we are excited to sup-port you as you discover, explore, and celebrate your talents and interests.”

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump was impeached by the U.S. House for a historic second time, charged with “incitement of insurrection” over the deadly mob siege of the U.S. Capitol in a swift and stun-ning collapse of his final days in office.

With the Capitol secured by armed National Guard troops inside and out, the House voted 232-197 on Wednesday to impeach Trump. The proceed-ings moved at lightning speed, with lawmakers voting just one week after violent pro-Trump loyalists stormed the Capitol, egged on by the president’s calls for them to “fight like hell” against the election results.

Ten Republicans fled Trump, joining Democrats who said he needed to be held account-able and warned ominously of a “clear and present danger” if Congress should leave him unchecked before Democrat Joe Biden’s inauguration Jan. 20.

Trump is the only U.S. presi-dent to be twice impeached. It was the most bipartisan presi-dential impeachment in modern times, more so than against Bill Clinton in 1998.

The Capitol insurrection stunned and angered lawmak-ers, who were sent scrambling for safety as the mob descended, and it revealed the fragility of the nation’s history of peace-ful transfers of power. The riot also forced a reckoning among some Republicans, who have stood by Trump throughout his presidency and largely allowed him to spread false attacks against the integrity of the 2020 election.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi invoked Abraham Lincoln and the Bible, imploring lawmak-ers to uphold their oath to defend the Constitution from all enemies, foreign “and domestic.”

She said of Trump: “He must go, he is a clear and present danger to the nation that we all love.”

Holed up at the White House, watching the proceedings on TV, Trump later released a video statement in which he made no mention at all of the impeach-ment but appealed to his supporters to refrain from any further violence or disruption of Biden’s inauguration.

“Like all of you, I was shocked and deeply saddened by the calamity at the Capitol last week,” he said, his first con-demnation of the attack. He appealed for unity “to move forward” and said, “Mob vio-lence goes against everything I believe in and everything our movement stands for. ... No true supporter of mine could ever disrespect law enforcement.”

Trump was first impeached by the House in 2019 over his dealings with Ukraine, but the Senate voted in 2020 acquit. He is the first president to be impeached twice. None has been convicted by the Senate, but Republicans said Wednesday that could change in the rapidly shifting political environment as officeholders, donors, big business and others peel away from the defeated president.

Biden said in a statement after the vote that it was his hope the Senate leadership “will find a way to deal with their Con-stitutional responsibilities on impeachment while also work-ing on the other urgent business of this nation.”

The soonest Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell would start an impeachment trial is next Tuesday, the day before Trump is already set to leave the White House, McCon-nell’s office said. The legislation is also intended to prevent Trump from ever running again.

McConnell believes Trump committed impeachable offenses and considers the Democrats’ impeachment drive an oppor-tunity to reduce the divisive, chaotic president’s hold on the GOP, a Republican strategist told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

McConnell told major donors over the weekend that he was through with Trump, said the strategist, who demanded ano-nymity to describe McConnell’s conversations.

In a note to colleagues Wednesday, McConnell said he had “not made a final decision on how I will vote” in a Senate impeachment trial.

Unlike his first time, Trump faces this impeachment as a weakened leader, having lost his own reelection as well as the Senate Republican majority.

Even Trump ally Kevin McCarthy, the House Republi-can leader, shifted his position and said Wednesday the presi-dent bears responsibility for the horrifying day at the Capitol.

In making a case for the “high crimes and misdemeanors” demanded in the Constitution, the four-page impeachment resolution relies on Trump’s own incendiary rhetoric and the falsehoods he spread about Biden’s election victory, includ-ing at a rally near the White House on the day of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

A Capitol Police officer died from injuries suffered in the riot, and police shot and killed a woman during the siege. Three other people died in what authorities said were medical emergencies. The riot delayed the tally of Electoral College votes that was the last step in finalizing Biden’s victory.

Ten Republican lawmakers, including third-ranking House GOP leader Liz Cheney of Wyo-ming, voted to impeach Trump, cleaving the Republican leader-ship, and the party itself.

Cheney, whose father is the former Republican vice presi-dent, said of Trump’s actions summoning the mob that “there has never been a greater betrayal by a President” of his office.

Trump was said to be livid with perceived disloyalty from McConnell and Cheney.

With the team around Trump hollowed out and his Twitter account silenced by the social media company, the president was deeply frustrated that he could not hit back, according to White House officials and Republicans close to the West Wing who weren’t authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.

From the White House, Trump leaned on Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina to push Republican senators to resist, while chief of staff Mark Meadows called some of his former colleagues on Capitol Hill.

The president’s sturdy popu-larity with the GOP lawmakers’ constituents still had some sway, and most House Republicans voted not to impeach.

Security was exceptionally tight at the Capitol, with tall fences around the complex. Metal-detector screenings were required for lawmakers enter-ing the House chamber, where a week earlier lawmakers huddled inside as police, guns drawn, barricaded the door from rioters.

“We are debating this historic measure at a crime scene,” said Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass.

During the debate, some Republicans repeated the false-hoods spread by Trump about the election and argued that the president has been treated unfairly by Democrats from the day he took office.

Other Republicans argued the impeachment was a rushed sham and complained about a double standard applied to his supporters but not to the liberal left. Some simply appealed for the nation to move on.

Republican Rep. Tom McClintock of California said, “Every movement has a lunatic fringe.”

Democratic Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo. and others recounted the harrowing day as rioters pounded on the chamber door trying to break in. Some called it a “coup” attempt.

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., contended that Trump was “capable of starting a civil war.”

Conviction and removal of Trump would require a two-thirds vote in the Senate, which will be evenly divided between the parties.

MIAMI — Northeast-ern A&M has established guidelines for home basketball games for the upcoming season.

“This year NEO has faced more challenges than ever before. COVID causes uncertainty with various alterations. We are constantly working on new approaches to keep student-athletes and our community safe and

healthy,” athletic director Joe Renfro said in an email to NEO boosters.

In an effort to comply with Center for Disease Control and Preven-tion, the college will limit seating in the NEO Field House to 25% capacity with 70 seats set aside for boosters on a first come-first served basis.

It’s hoped that normal seating capacity and booster seating can be resumed next season.

Boosters may purchase a

chair back seat for $100 each for the season. However, those who purchase the seats may not have their “regular” seats from in the past.

Once the chair back limited capacity is reached, non-chair back seats will be sold for $100 per seat.

MIAMI — Overcoming eight missed free throws and loads of turnovers, Miami still was able to make Tuesday night’s game with Wagoner interesting.

The only problem was the Lady Wardogs fell two points short during a 30-28 loss at the Miami Activity Center.

“It probably shouldn’t have been that close because we had too many silly turnovers and we missed too many free throws and too many layups,” Miami coach Robert Neill said. “Defensively, we played extremely well. We held them to 12 points in the first half and 18 points in the second half.

“We didn’t do a very good job of executing and we weren’t very tough with the ball tonight. That caused us problems.”

The loss snapped a two game win-ning streak for MHS and it was just the second loss in the last six games.

The two defeats have been by a total of three points, including a 49-48 overtime loss to Claremore Sequoyah last Tuesday night.

Miami (4-5) travels to No. 18 Vinita Friday, Jan. 15 to wrap up a hectic schedule that will have it

playing five times in 10 days.“I don’t feel it’s a game we can’t

compete in if we just decide to do it,” Neill said. “If we don’t hit our free throws and if we have silly turnovers, we won’t be able to com-pete with them. We can’t beat many people when we do that.”

It was a sluggish first half for both teams Tuesday night with the game tied at 7 and 12 in the first two quarters.

Wagoner was able to take charge by scoring the first seven points in the third.

The Lady Bulldogs were up 25-20 heading into the fourth and 30-24 with 3:40 remaining.

Beca Hopping had the final four points of the game, getting a bucket from inside off a feed from Kiah Payton with 3:14 to play and a drive with 1:11 remaining.

Neither team would score again after that.

Hopping had a game-high 15 points for the Lady Wardogs, who were 6 of 14 at the free throw line.

Chloe Preaus scored five points followed by Sara Acupan with four and two each by Kylie Jinks and Payton.

Freshman Gracie Burckhartz-meyer scored 12 of the Lady Bulldogs’ 30 points.
