INVESTING IN OUR COMMON FUTURE
• Fish represents the 15% of total protein consumed by humans in the world
• Number of fish species is around 32.000, those captured and consumed around the world is about hundreds
• Consumers preferences are cultural, but there are a
few fish species most wanted

Fish: what is in the market?
INVESTING IN OUR COMMON FUTURE
• Increase in the number of fish species in our markets
• 50% exports to USA, Japan and EU from developing countries
• Fish we eat come from different locations driven by
• Development of ships and fishing techniques
• Improvement of conservation processes
• Development of fishing industry in emergent countries
• Development of transportation and globalisation

Fish: do we know what are we buying/eating?
A mako shark fillet, above, is often passed off as swordfish, top.
Seafood mislabelling a few examples….
• 2012 work by S. Mariani group revealed that up to 25%
of commercial COD samples can be mislabelled (Ireland )
• Smoked COD products revealed 70% of mislabelling
• 30% Hake was also found mislabelled in 2011 by Spanish
researchers
• Oceana found 31% of seafood mislabelled in Florida: red snapper (86%), grouper (16%), white tuna in sushi (100%)

Fish: do we know what are we buying/eating?
Seafood mislabelling
• Economic fraud
• Illegal fishing practices
• Safety issues

But which method?
• Official method?
• AOAC method still IEF
• FDA SOP for fish species identification with COI barcoding
• Laboratories with expertise. Usually public and research origin
• Administration. Rely in public or private labs

The consortium provides different perspectives to the problem: • Research labs with experience in species ID
• Gov. administration with tasks related with labelling rules
• Gov. administration with labelling control tasks
• Gov. administration with customs control tasks

Analysis of seafood labelling
• Analyze the situation of seafood labeling at auctions and
markets
• Study the perception of consumers of traceability and labeling
• Control of seafood labelling
INVESTING IN OUR COMMON FUTURE
labelfish
• We will know the level of mislabeling across these regions for some key seafood products and species

We will study consumer perception about labeling
• What is quality for seafood consumers? does this includes safety? Species? Origin?
• Are consumers willing to pay more money for seafood quality labels?
• Is money the main aspect considered when purchasing a seafood product?
• Are consumers aware of species fraud?
• Does this worry them in the case of seafood?
Analysis of seafood labelling
INVESTING IN OUR COMMON FUTURE

Another important aspects that we will study:
• Estimation of fish and seafood inspection in Atlantic area in terms of authenticity: how
much fish is inspected?
• What is the level of enforcement of seafood labeling normatives?
• Resources employed for the enforcement of these normatives and evaluation of
the capacity of these resources
• Level of punishment when failure to comply with seafood labeling normatives

Standardisation of fish authenticity methodologies
• Up-date the latest methodologies used for fish species authentication
• Advantages and disadvantages of the methodologies + DNA markers
INVESTING IN OUR COMMON FUTURE
labelfish
• Selection of a methodology for SOP and proposal of a standard European methodology for the
control of fish labelling
• Cost-effective
• Reliable
• Fully validated
• Transference to control labs

• Network of research laboratories on fish species identification and…
entities, companies with expertise and capacities in fish seafood labelling and fish authenticity
INVESTING IN OUR COMMON FUTURE
labelfish
• Aims: • Communication Forum to all stakeholders involved in seafood
authenticity and labelling
