Campus Plan PrioritiesThe campus planning team provided an update about the campus planning process to date, including the key themes that emerged from feedback during the mobile booths, Ideas Fairs, and stakeholder workshops. Using that as background information, PUE shared their priorities for the Campus Plan.
Key Themes• Showcase the work that is done by all of
KPU’s faculties
• Engage the KPU community and external community through the campus planning process
• Visualize each campus as part of the community they’re situated in
• Plan for revenue-generating opportunities to enable KPU to be self-sustaining
• Celebrate KPU’s brand as the only multi-campus polytechnic in Canada
• 63
Online SurveyOVERVIEWThe KPU community was invited to provide input into the campus planning process through an online survey. Participants were offered a chance to win a Tim Horton’s gift card for participating in the process. The goal for the Online Survey was to first, understand the needs of the KPU community and the extent to which the KPU campuses are satisfying those needs, and to confirm the themes emerging from the mobile booths and Ideas Fairs to inform the Vision, Principles, and Big Moves.

MeetingsWe have had many face-to-face meetings with faculty, staff, committees, KSA, KFA, the IAC, ISC, city planners and Translink as part of the campus planning process. Not only are these imperative for keeping KPU’s stakeholders informed, these meetings support strategic alignment between the Campus Plan and other initiatives that are happening at KPU’s campuses and within the KPU Region.
These meetings are expected to continue through the campus planning process. And while the outcomes from all of these concurrent but connected conversations cannot be included in this report, they will continue to inform the emerging design discussions that await in Phase 4.
Indigenous EngagementEngaging with the Kwantlen, Musqueam, Katzie, Semiahmoo, Tsawwassen, Qayqat and Kwikwetlem First Nations and Indigenous peoples is a priority for the campus planning process. To date, we have met with KPU’s Elder in Residence, Leykeyten, the Indigineous Student Council (ISC) and the Indigenous Advisory Council (IAC) to learn about preferred methods to meaningfully involve Indigenous peoples in the campus planning process.
At the October 22 IAC meeting, Brock Endean facilitated an exercise to create a living vision for KPU’s IAC. This process involved identifying beliefs and behaviours that will advance the vision. Some of these, including:
• Understanding/learning the language and culture of this place,
• Giving space and time for traditional place-based celebrations, and
• Providing physical elements that need to be present for student success.
The themes also capture ways that the Campus Plan can also support KPU’s Indigenous Community and the campus planning team will continue to reference this document as the Campus Plan unfolds.
These discussions will carry on with the Kwantlen First Nation, Metis Nation of BC, and with other Nations as we continue to reach out, in January and through the remaining phases of the campus planning process.
Kwantlen Student Association (KSA) The campus planning team has continued to engage the KSA as they vision what a student HUB building might entail. As part of the KSA Town Hall students and faculty were asked to select images of spaces that would like to see in the new Student Hub. The following were the top 5 choices:
• Nap room
• Pub
• Garden
• Gaming area
• Gathering space with soft seating
These results are consistent with the themes that are emerging through the campus planning engagement process.
The City of Langley and The City of SurreyThe meetings held with the Cities of Surrey and Langley have highlighted a shared interest in working collaboratively to examine how the outcomes of the KPU2050 Plan might influence and inform ongoing City planning efforts of surrounding neighbourhoods. Including the City of Langley’s OCP update and the City of Surrey’s Cloverdale Town Centre Plan.

Next StepsHOW WE USE WHAT WE’VE HEARDYour feedback at this phase will inform the development of a Vision and Principles that encompass all of KPU’s campuses, and Big Moves (what we call design directives) for the Langley, Richmond, Surrey and KPU Tech campuses. Together, the Vision, Principles and Big Moves will form the foundation of the draft concept plans that we will be exploring in the next project phase. We will be back out to engage on-campus the Winter semester to ask if we’ve effectively summarized your ideas into the Vision, Principles and Big Moves.

OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE IN THE NEXT PHASEIn January we will be entering Phase 4 of the project timeline. During Phase 4 we will be reporting back to the KPU community with a draft Vision, Principles, and Big Moves. We will be looking to confirm that we have translated your feedback correctly and will be consulting you to inform draft design concepts for the Langley, Richmond, Surrey and KPU Tech campuses.

What’s Happening?
What is a Campus Master Plan? This Campus Master Plan will create a roadmap to the year 2050. It will respond to existing plans and strategic priorities at KPU, such as the Academic Plan and Vision 2023. This plan will create a framework for strategic decision making relating to the built form, open spaces, natural areas, and mobility networks on KPU’s campuses with consideration of KPU’s unique multi-campus identity and program space requirements.
What are your top priorities for improvements to the physical qualities of the campus? (e.g. transportation connections, open spaces, buildings, etc.)

The Langley campus community feels especially welcomed in the West building. Participants identified feeling unwelcomed or unsafe near the Gateway of Hope facility, on the North West path on campus, along the Langley Bypass, and on the path to Tim Hortons located at the nearby Esso Station. The majority of students study in the library located in the West building. The most favoured outdoor spaces are nearby Header house, in the central plaza and on the northeast half of campus. The majority of the community is accessing food off-campus but the cafeteria was identified as a both a place to study and have lunch. CAMPUS RELATIONSHIP HEAT MAP

HISTORY OF KPU
THE KPU2050 CAMPUS MASTER PLAN WILL BUILD ON THE PLANNING WORK THAT KPU HAS ALREADY COMPLETED AND ADOPTED.
Over the course of nearly 40 years KPU has expanded to five campuses and has educated over 200,000 students. This is a brief timeline of KPU’s growth since Time Immemorial.

The properties surrounding the KPU Tech campus are a diverse mix of industrial, residential and commercial development and agricultural lands. Single family residential forms the majority of the area north of the campus. Areas east and west of the campus are occupied by light industrial uses. Most of the commercial activity is located northwest of the campus. Agricultural land dominates the properties south of the campus, beyond the rail track.
VehiclesThe KPU Tech campus is car-oriented with surface parking and easy access to arterial roads including BC Highway 10.
TransitTwo Translink routes serve the campus: the 342 Newton Exchange and 370 Willowbrook. These buses arrive in 30 minute intervals on average. In addition, the KPU Shuttle moves students, faculty and staff from the Tech campus to the Langley and Surrey campuses.
CyclingOne cycling route connects to the campus along 180 st.

MOBILITY NETWORKSThe KPU Tech campus has two buildings. The Main building is two-storeys and hosts most of the campus’ classrooms as well as the cafeteria and library. The second building is the Farrier workshop. It is a one-storey building that contains additional student workspace tailored to the Farrier program.
There are three Translink transit stops located adjacent to the campus as well as a stop for the KPU shuttle. There are two bike storage areas on campus but no cycling routes. Paved walkways connect the campus to the parking lot, Highway 10 and 180 st.
There is minimal designed open space on the campus. Most of the open space is dominated by surface parking. There are two small plazas to mark the building entrances and a landscaped courtyard adjacent to the cafeteria that has a water feature and outdoor seating.
