Dear Parents & Caregivers
Kilkenny Primary School staff & students have returned to excellent teaching and
learning programs to start Term 3.
At our staff training day in Week 1 we shared great learning around our documentation of student progress; what makes a Powerful Teacher & Learner at
KPS; and how we can move forward with intervention support for our students.
From our work we are developing a clearer framework about our teaching and learning work here.
As a Powerful Learner your child amongst other qualities will– be reflective, highly collaborate, have
strong student voice and set clear attainable goals.
As a Powerful Teacher here amongst other qualities we– set clear learning intentions and success
criteria, are explicit with teaching moments, provide ongoing individualised feedback.
As a Powerful Community we are building toward– a strong sense of team, being open to ideas and visits, have involvement in whole school events, student lead activities, sharing child aspects together
for best outcomes.
We will be building and sharing more of this framework together.
School Events
The school is safely and cautiously moving forward with learning events during Term 3.
In line with strict COVID protocol from Government and Councils these important events are moving
forward.
Swimming next week is an important curriculum activity. Please have all students organised and ready for Monday morning. In line with COVID protocol no parents or community will be at
the Adelaide Aquatic Centre
The kitchen program returns for Upper Primary students under guidelines from the Department
for Education.
On August 27th we are holding a very important Parent evening re Cyber Safety; more details
soon.
All activities and events are in line with safety guidelines. Any changes to any plans will be quickly sent
to families via our communication platforms if required.
Wishing families a safe next few weeks,
Regards

FREE WELLBEING SERVICE FOR ALL CHILDREN – TERM 3 OPPORTUNITIES
*NOW OPEN*
Is your child struggling in class, with friendships, self-confidence, anxiety or other issues?
We are fortunate to offer a FREE (fully bulk-billed) and unique wellbeing service which
offers one-on-one support for your child, during school hours. We believe in a
preventative and holistic approach to mental wellbeing, to support children as they
navigate through school, teenage years and beyond. Of course, some mental health issues are more obvious and
require immediate support, yet others are less so and can be misunderstood due to children acting as though
everything is fine. This is where an opportunity is presented, to pick up on more subtle signs – such as sleep issues,
worry, nightmares and challenges with focus and interest in homework or social activities.
Grow Wellbeing is a team of expert health professionals including Social Workers, Psychologists, Clinical
Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and GP's who believe in a pro-active and community-based approach to
enhancing wellbeing.
Grow Wellbeing provides free NDIS education, advice and support to families via our NDIS service coordinator.
The NDIS coordinator aims to support families who have a current diagnosis seeking to apply or feel their current
funding is either inadequate and/or is not working.
The process is quick and simple and requires a parent/guardian to sign a consent form from the school and request
a Mental health care plan from your GP. Please contact Alex at the school if you require more information.
“All children deserve the opportunity to build and develop resilience,
to cope with everyday life”.
Swimming
A reminder that Swimming Week is next week for all students in Foundation – Year 5. Please ensure students
come to school each day wearing their bathers underneath their uniform. Due to COVID restrictions, parents are
not allowed to attend the Swimming Centre and will be turned away at the door. The Department for Education
Water Safety Education Program is designed to support students in becoming safe and confident in aquatic
environments. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you have any questions regarding Swimming Week.
Sickness
A reminder that if students are generally unwell, they should not be attending school. Parents will be contacted and
asked to collect their child from school if the child is presenting as sick or unwell.

What a year 2020 has been?! Just a little update from me- we have a number of Kilkenny Students participating in the Student2Student program with the Smith Family - supporting younger students in SA with their reading, as well as some Kilkenny students being reading buddies to younger students at school. Unfortunately Breakfast Club on Friday mornings is currently on hold at this
stage.
But we still have been able to enjoy some chalk drawings in the winter sun, and I am excited for this Friday’s Walk a Mile in My Boots challenge to support the
Hutt St Centre at school.
Linda – Wellbeing Classroom Worker
It has been a busy and exciting start to Term 3 for the Wellbeing Classroom.
During Term 2 Green 1, Green 3, Green 4 and Green 5 explored Character Strengths. For Creativity, students worked in groups to create school mascots based on the school care agreements. In week one of this term students presented their hard work in front of their peers and school leadership. I was both proud and impressed by the quality of work and thought put into each character. After a voting process five mascots have been chosen to represent
our school.
This term Junior Primary classes will be focussing on Kimochis® Characters and Keys of Communication whilst Upper
Primary will continue to focus on Character Strengths
Brenton – Wellbeing Coordinator
We have had a huge focus on learning and teaching over the last few weeks as a school through the collection and analysis of feedback data from both students and teachers. This data aligns to our state’s pedagogy framework – the Teaching for Effective Learning Framework and has given us some valuable data on where our strengths are, as well as areas for improvement. Interestingly enough the data from our students and teachers is very similar, which means the work we are doing here at school is being understood and articulated by both teachers and students.
So what is our biggest strength students identified? Building a community of learners. We have an environment where everyone inspires and encourages each other’s learning.
Here is what a couple of students said in response.
“Different people have different strengths/interests so if you don’t know something then it’s extremely likely that someone in
your class does!”
“Yes because you might not understand how the teachers explain what you are learning about and other people may explain
it in a different way to help you.”
And what are we going to focus on together for improvement? Strengthening our democratic relationships - Ensuring students and teachers feel safe to take risks and voice their opinions during the learning and teaching process. We are already designing strategies to do this together.
Stay tuned – it’s exciting learning!

In Red 1 this term we are working on becoming authors. We have started the term looking at Recount writing and have enjoyed giving and receiving feedback on our work. One activity we really enjoyed was coming up with a 'Wacky Recount' with our learning partners and sharing our funny recounts afterwards.
RED 2 — Year Rec — Jess Pietsch We've been casting spells, building castles, making fairy bread, building fairy gardens and creating sticker stories as a part of our 'Fairy Tales' topic. It's been fantastic to see the students in Red 2 consolidate their literacy and numeracy skills and transfer this learning to STEAM challenges and their play. We look forward to sharing our very own fairy tales with you at the end of the term!
RED 1 — Year 1/2 — Tara Clarke / Claire Ewens
RED 3 — Year Rec/1 — Alanna Caire
In Red 3, we have been
investigating Narratives and Fairy
Tales. We have learnt about the
characteristics of a Fairy Tale and
know they usually include good and
evil characters, an enchanted
setting, a problem, a resolution and
magic spells. We have also made
different Fairy Tale props including
wands and crowns.

RED 6 — Year 1— Alison Duggan
The children have made a wonderful start to the term. We have been discussing weather and deciding what weather is. The children brainstormed what they thought weather is. Some of the words they thought described weather were rainy, sunny, stormy, windy, tornado, hurricane. We have been discussing what are feelings, what feelings we can have and why we have them. The children came up with many feelings and discussed that we have feelings to show how we react to certain situations. Some of the feelings they listed were happy (which was the most popular), sad (another popular choice), angry, upset frustrated, tired. We discussed that many feelings can be described by different words. We discussed we may all show
different feelings for the same situation.
RED 4 — Year 2 — Sharonlee Kritzki
Red 5 students are thoroughly enjoying their Fairy tales’ theme this term. Not only are they reading old fairy tales like The Three
Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood, they are also appreciating the modern stories like The Big Bad Wolf is Good and The True
Story of the Three Little Pigs (by A. Wolf). Students are being exposed to how stories can be seen from different points of view
which can change our whole perspective of the original fairy tales! When the narrator was the Wolf we felt sorry for him and could
certainly see how things got so out of hand for him in the past stories! We have also read Jack and the Beanstalk and students
decided it would be a great idea to try to grow their own bean stalks. This week they have planted some broad beans in plastic
cups and we are all looking forward to seeing them (hopefully) grow as tall as the ones in our school garden. One student is
hoping their beanstalk will reach right up into the clouds like Jack’s did!
As part of our whole school focus on building powerful learners and their dispositions around thinking and learning in STEM. Red 4 have been working on Lego or block challenges to encourage the development of student’s ability to design, collabo-rate, problem solve, critical thinkers’ directional language and creativity. Using the task of writing clear instructions we are learning about directional language, sequencing to develop our ability to write algorithms (coding). Students are working on their collaborative and communication skills in a team environment.

GREEN 1 —Year 5/6 — Ryan Atkins Green 1’s main focus for the start of this term has been working as a team! We have been developing our friendliness towards each other and ability to work with all of our peers. On top of this we have developed individual goals for maths, English and one caring agreement. Each student identified things they would like to work on to make it a strength. Students will focus on this for the remainder of the term, we will be continually checking in on these goals and see if we are on
track to completing these.
We have made a great start to this term and I look
forward to further progressing as a team.
GREEN 3 — Year 6/7 (2) — Paige Vogelsang
GREEN 2 —2/3 — Jake C
This term in Green 3, we have been focusing around the theme of ‘Eco Warriors’, which we have
worked into our Geography, English, Mathematics and Visual Arts. We have excitedly taken part in
these activities, and we look forward to more engaging lessons that Miss Paige will teach us in the
future. In Geography, we have been looking at livability, how it affects our lives and all the different
aspects that make a place ‘livable’. We have also learnt about population growth, and have analysed
and thought about what would happen to our world’s resources if the world became severely over
populated. In Visual Arts, we have been brainstorming ideas for our Mixed Media Sculptures. We will
use recyclable materials and organic matter to form one of three sculpture ideas. We look forward to
the coming weeks, what challenges we will overcome, and what else Miss Paige will throw at us. By Luka and Hessa. Year 7
Green 2 have settled in nicely at the beginning of term 3. We have been looking closely into 2D and 3D shapes, and had the opportunity to build different 3D shapes with matchsticks and blutac. Students will work towards designing and building their own stadium, using different shapes and materials over the coming weeks. We have also been working on our creative writing, looking at making our narratives engaging. Great work thus far Green 2.

GREEN 5 — Year 6/7 (3) — Michael Kennett
GREEN 4 —Year 6/7 — Rhiannon Duffield
Trust me, there is method to this madness: Students in Green 5 have hit the ground running, enjoying a positive, goal
orientated start to Term 3. We have not beat around the bush! Our focus this term is empowerment, or taking
ownership of our learning. This means that we now actively participate with Mr Kennett in wrapping our heads around
our individual data. We get the best of both worlds by helping Mr Kennett to structure tasks that suit our identified
areas for growth. We’re not pulling your leg; we really do get a say in what we do! Those who have ventured through
the front office may have noticed some sound advice when dealing with emotions and feelings. Whilst it is good advice,
don’t forget that actions speak louder than words! We may have bitten off more than we can chew by attempting to
compile them into a book to help young people, although it’s not rocket science. We’ll keep you posted. We’ve also
been learning about idioms and they are the best thing since sliced bread. (Can you find them all? It’s a piece of cake!)
This term, Green 4 has a focus on being Eco Warriors with all learning centered on this theme. In HASS they will be creating their own country with the aim of it being the most sustainable, well run and best developed country using other existing countries as inspiration. In Art, they will be creating a mixed media sculpture using recyclable materials that portrays an important message about the environment and how we may be using and treating it poorly. Finally in English they will be researching a famous invention, hopefully still tying in with the eco warriors theme, and writing an information report on. We will keep
you posted on our progress throughout the term.

BLUE 3 — Year 4/5 — Ulla Hoffman
Blue 4 and 5 have been explored the features of 2D and 3D shapes as well as strategies for improving our basic fact recall for addition and subtraction. Our artwork has been looking at symmetry and we are looking forward to completing our multi-step radial print-making. In Literacy, we are looking at information reports and are looking forward to the experiences we will have with this unit of work, including creating an A-Z class book
and visiting the Adelaide Zoo with a focus on threatened species.
Today in the Garden with Tony
When we went to work with Mr Tony in the school garden we went to his trailer and we got hay for the
chickens and the ducks. We carried the hay and put it in the chicken sheds in the school’s orchard.
When we finished that, we chased the chickens and ducks and Patrick
tried to scare the chickens by running around the orchard. We also tried
to pick up the chickens and to pat them, but we couldn’t get them
because they kept running away from us.
Then we went back to the trailer and put the empty hay bags back in
the trailer. Then the lesson finished and we went back to class and Ms.
Ellis-Kells got us to write what we did in the garden in our journals. We
had so much fun at garden today with Mr Tony and the chickens.

BLUE 4 & 5 — Year 3/4 — Meg McLeod / Taylor Jenkinson
Blue 3 has made a worm farm and we are selling worm wee for $1 a litre. We were wondering if you want
to buy some? We are also selling a takeaway container full of compost worms for a farm at home, for
$10.
We’re swimming next week, we go every day of the week.
Blue 3 is now organising to go to the Adelaide Central Market for our Taco Production Line project. We
were told to plan a taco and how we’d produce it on a line, but we went up a step and now we are going
to the market to buy our ingredients to make our tacos. We are going to share them with our siblings,
friends and teachers. We had to work out our ingredients and the equipment we will use. We’re looking
forward to it!

This term in maths we strengthening our knowledge of place value. Some learners are building their understanding
of 10 ones in 1 ten and others are extending their skills in representing and partitioning numbers up to 10,000. We
have been playing dice games and manipulatives to practice regrouping, games such as ‘guess my number’ and
place value ‘go fish’, and building structures using Base 10 blocks and counting our total. Students are becoming
more comfortable with the language of place value and the importance of the position of numbers. Very pleasing
efforts in maths so far this term.
Barn 2 are over the moon to be back at swimming again, we couldn’t keep the smiles off of our faces! We enjoyed getting
back into the pool and practising our safe entries, floating, paddling and using safety equipment like life jackets and
floaties to help us swim. Tuesday afternoons are our favourite time of the week! Here are some of our happy snaps from
swimming last week!

Barn 4 children have warmly welcomed two new students to our class, Jayden and Cleon. This term we will be exploring the topic ‘Paddock to Plate’. Children will get the opportunity to learn how different farms operate and how different foods are processed. This week we have learnt about dairy farms and milk. We also drew pictures of dairy cows.
This term in Barn 5 we are learning about the topic ‘Paddock to Plate’. We will learn about how
different produce and foods are processed and their journey to the supermarket.
So far, we have learnt about where milk comes from. We are using the information we are learning to write an Explanation text. Last week our class joined Barn 3 to make a banana smoothie. It was
delicious! We are now going to write a procedural text explaining how it was made.
It has been a great start to the term. We have begun our Teaching and Learning Cycle
Paddock to Plate. We have already learnt how to write an explanation and a procedure. We
made a banana smoothie last week to help us learn how to write a procedure. We have
continued Read Write Inc and have begun our comprehension SPRINT. We have also been
working with Ms Monica’s class on a collaborative project. Life seems to be getting back to
the new normal as we get stuck into our learning. We hope everyone is staying safe.

Returning back to Preschool after the holidays the children were eager to kick off their learning. Our educators also started the
term off with some learning to further develop our pedagogical documentation with our aim to capture children’s voice in our
learning, to enhance their oral language development. There has been a common interest across both groups around bugs in
our garden, in particular caterpillars and snails. Discoveries and questioning has started into a larger inquiry about what the
children would like to learn about these creatures. You will see this learning display grow in our Preschool. We also continue on
with our story tables this term with our first story being “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” which connects to the children’s current
interest.
Hi All,
The garden is going okay in the depths of
winter. Children have been weeding, preparing
garden beds, worm wee and turning compost.
Barn 2 has eggs in our incubator due to hatch on
17/8, exciting! Rainfall is long overdue, bring on
spring.
Keep it green,

Dear Kilkenny Primary School,
Thank you so much for your email and for your fantastic efforts putting on your school event in support of FightMND. On behalf of Neale Daniher and all people living with MND, thank you for demonstrating your support and taking the plunge down the icey slide. What a great way to raise awareness and funds for vital MND research. All funds raised will go to the best and brightest research to help find a cure for this beast of a disease, Motor Neurone Disease.
We absolutely loved the video you put together, showcasing the spectacular slide. Congratulations to everyone who dressed up and went down the slippery dip!! Looked like such fun! Huge thanks to everyone who bought a beanie to show their support as well. We hope our big freeze beanies keep you warm this Winter.
Thanks again for your support, much appreciated. We'd love to stay in touch and hopefully next year, you have another fun filled Kilkenny Big Freeze event!
