World Senior citizens day - 02.08.2019 The World Senior Citizens Day is celebrated on 21st of August

every year. We at San Academy set aside August 2nd to raise awareness about the factors and issues affecting older people, such as deterioration with age and to examine issues that affect their lives such as abuse of elderly people. Opportunities were created in order to let the students recognize and appreciate the contributions that older people make to society. All the students were made to realize that all owe the older citizens a heartfelt thanks and salute for all they have achieved and continue to accomplish. The special assembly conducted by class VIA, centred on this theme wholeheartedly. They presented a well scripted and enacted skit to raise awareness about the conditions of the people who are old and those who are entering old age. They even touched upon the deteriorating relationship with grandparents and the measures that can be taken to rectify it. Their messages were strengthened by thought provoking charts. Our Principal and the class teacher in their speech brought home the fact that we can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older – places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.

As the saying goes “Friend in need is a friend indeed” which means that whenever you are in need, a friend is there for you. Friendship Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of August. This year in 2019, it was celebrated on 4 August in the special assembly conducted by Class VI B. San Academy Kamakoti Nagar had a cheerful look on Monday (5.08.2019) with students wishing each other and the teachers on the occasion. Hands could be seen with several friendship bands of varied designs and colours. Your friend is the person who knows all about you, and still likes you. Someone trustworthy, genuine and accepts you for who you are. This was intricately explained by the students of Class VI B in their special assembly. A beautiful poem on Friends was recited by Joshitha. Shakespeare in his poem ‘Friends and Flatters’ explicitly brings out the difference between the real friend, who is the one to stand with us in our ups and downs and flatterers, who stand with us only when we stand. The young minds were able to distinguish between true and fake friends and brought it out into the open in the form of a debate. There are times when we are torn between friends and relatives. In a beautifully conducted group discussion titled – “Is friendship relation is more precious than a blood relation?” – the students put forth their strong points and made it quite interesting for the audience.

Hiroshima day - 06.08.2019

Each and every item of the programme on friendship day was supported by well drawn charts with powerful messages. Our Principal and Class Teacher had put forth some adult perspective to the entire scenario by advising the students that the parents are always the best friends for anyone. They also delved deeper into friends and pseudo friends, so that the young minds are not carried away. By the end of the day, the students realized that we human beings are social animals and we need somebody faithful to share and care for and therefore we need a true relationship which has a whiff of true friendship.

This event also recognizes the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make to improve world issues such as environmental protection. Having been given a tough topic beyond their comprehension, the students of Class VIC rose up to the challenge and presented a splendid thematic assembly based on the topic. They started the programme by explaining who indigenous people were, and the need to celebrate this day. They explained that in order to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups, every 9 August commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY-19.8.2019

Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others? World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is held every year on 19 August to pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service, and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world. San Academy Kamakoti Nagar went along with the flow in making the young minds understand the word humanitarian. The students understood that the purpose of World Humanitarian Day is to raise awareness of the plight of civilians around the world who have become caught up in conflicts, and also honour and raise support for the humanitarian workers who risk, and sometimes lose, their lives to help. Students of Class VI D, did extensive study and during the assembly on this day informed their peer group that over 130 million people throughout the world are currently in crisis, either through war or natural disasters and are in need of humanitarian aid. With the help of a mime, they displayed that kindness goes a long way in helping others in need. Their commanding performance sent the message that strength, power and perseverance when added to kindness, moulds dedicated heroes. The Speeches by the class teacher and Principal any small help, which may seem insignificant, will definitely help in benefit someone in a big way.

WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY - 26.08.2019 A gender-equal society would be one where the word 'gender' does not exist: where everyone can be themselves. Women’s Equality Day commemorates 26th August 1920 when votes to women officially became part of the US constitution. This day marks a turning point in the history of the struggle for equal treatment of women and women’s rights. As it was believed that woman’s inferior status in society was completely logical and reasonable; women were ‘beautiful’ and ‘not fit for serious employment’, was seriously believed, it took tremendous effort of great women to prove that these views are wrong. Students of Class IXA presented a very thought provoking thematic assembly by asserting that women were indeed capable of great deeds and they deserve to be treated as an equal to man in all fields and purposes, if not better. Achievements of several women were talked about the necessity to provide women across the globe with equal opportunities to education and employment highlighted. Their debate on – Do women have equal pay like men? – exhibited the in depth research they had done on the topic.

At the end of the day the students realized that discrimination and stereotyping of women needs to be curtailed and it is essential to think about treating people (men and women) as equals. It is critical that supporting women’s empowerment projects in developing countries is given a big boost.

INDEPENDENCE DAY - 15.08.2019

Speeches in Hindi and English gave the insight as to the fact that it was not easy for India to gain freedom from British rule but our political leaders, freedom fighters and people together participated in the freedom struggle and were determined to gain independence. Thus it was emphasised upon that we should not understand ourselves free of responsibilities towards India but we have to use it to shape our future.Patriotic songs were sung with great feeling by the students in Hindi and Tamil. These songs awakened everyone’s feelings towards our motherland. National leaders took to centre stage, when students dressed up like their favourite leaders and spoke about their contribution to the independence movement.Vibrant classical dance performance and the famous ‘VeerapandiyaKattaboman’ play in Tamil added music and colour to the programme. Jal Sakthi Abhiyan - 22.08.2019

In a talk given by a Middle School Teacher, she addressed the importance of the objectives of JAL SAKTHI ABHIYAN. The talk started with a small interactive session where students were asked the use of water and water resources. The children were even asked why the mammoth water storage in the sea/ocean is not usable. Next the focus shifted to the major 5 aspects – water conservation and rainwater harvesting; renovation of traditional and other water bodies; reuse of water and recharging of structures; watershed development; and intensive afforestation. After having faced an acute water shortage during summer, the students were able to relate to the information being shared. The fact that though 70% of Earth is made up of water, only 2.5 of them is fresh and only a fraction of this is available for human use was explained to the students. Ideas on how they could save potable water and spread awareness to near and dear ones were discussed. Towards the end the speaker enlightened the children regarding the crisis faced by Cape Town and urged the students to preserve the water bodies so that Chennai do not travel the same path.

CLUB ACTIVITY- AUGUST: DRAMA CLUB, SPOTLIGHT

Stories play a vital role in the growth and development of children. The books they read and the characters that they get to know can become friends. Reading also helps children with their confidence levels, coping with feelings, and improves in learning language. The Dramatic Club encourages dramatic presentations by students in the form of skits, mime, plays etc. It is an opportunity for students to explore all areas of performing a skit – which includes reading of the story, writing script, delegating roles to the group, practice and finally the performance. The Drama Club is dedicated to bringing the joy and power of Drama to students by providing good stories at the beginner and intermediate levels. It pledges to offer participants the chance to experience the excitement and rewards of theatre arts while developing poise, social skills, confidence, creativity, communication skills and the ability to work with others. Before the final week the students were introduced to the Drama club, videos of the stories to be enacted were shown, texts for the stories were handed out, students were given ample time to practice and finally they were fully prepared when the D – Day arrived. Each class were allotted stories for specific houses.

INTRA COMPETITION CLASSES I TO 9 - 29.08.2019

Classes I and II had story narration. The students had the teachers stupefied by their narrative skills. It was a great dilemma in choosing the winner. Drama is an art of expression. What more can really keep a youngster captivated than a humorous story with a moral? While students of Class III enacted stories from Tenali Rama it was from the popular stories from Akbar and Birbal which got the students from Class IV at their best. Children have always been enchanted by our epics. The small episodes taken from these always captivate their imagination. Students from Classes V and VI were lucky to have enacted a few stories from Ramayana and Mahabharatha respectively. Talking of Drama, how can one forget the Bard of Avon who is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language? Students from classes VII to IX were given plays written by the great William Shakespeare. The plays were performed so well that the judges had a great difficulty in deciding the winner. Judgement criteria included confidence, clarity in story, expression, voice modulation, dialogue delivery, presentation, team work and usage of props. At the end of the month we are sure that the students gained a great deal from their experience and found the entire exercise a fruitful and enjoyable one.

BLOOD DONATION CAMP- 17.08.2019

“Bring a life back to power. Make blood donation your responsibility” SEWA (Social Empowerment through Work Education and Action), an endeavor by CBSE is a program that aims to focus on the mental, emotional and social health of a student. The main objective of SEWA projects is to direct children’s mind in constructive activities with positive outcomes through the facilitation of creative and critical thinking. This would help them to develop self- confidence and self-esteem. Another objective of this programme is to underline the significance of the interdependence of all human beings and our dependence on the environment in this shrinking global village. Students must acknowledge that they have a responsibility towards the less privileged, the disadvantaged, the society, and the environment. The principle of giving to society has to become second nature to them.

Students of class IX, San Academy Kamakoti Nagar, in association with Rotary Club of Chennai Infocity, conducted a blood donation camp ‘Drops Of Life’ at the campus on 17.08.2019. The enthusiasm shown by the students along with San Academy Scouts and Guides was really overwhelming. The volunteers had given their positive support and help in organizing the blood camp. A team of one doctor, two nurses, two lab technicians and four attenders came for collection of blood. The activity of blood donation started at 9.00 am and continued till 1.00 pm. A person’s weight, haemoglobin content and blood pressure were checked before accepting the donor. An event of such nature was held in the campus for the first time and the response was quite gratifying. 35 units of blood was collected and sent to Cancer Institute. A Certificate of appreciation, donation card, and refreshment was given to each donor as a token of gratitude. The effort taken by the students was well appreciated.
