Randall (Randy) Frank Shaw

June 17, 1953 - January 22, 2007

SHAW – Randy passed away on Monday, January 22, 2007 at the age of 53 years. He was predeceased by his Grandpa Frank; father-in-law, Cecil West and sister in-law, Catherine. Randy is survived by his wife, Jan; children Amy (Neil), Becky (Chris), Jeremy and Zac (Jasmine); grandchildren Brittney, Kaden, Abby, Dylan, Tristen, Zoe, Kayla and Nicholas; mother and father Roy and Joyce Shaw; brother Gary (Brenda) Shaw and their sons Josh, Simon and Joey and their families; mother-in-law Marjorie West; his brothers and sisters-in-law and their families; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Randy’s passion was his family. He also had a great love for football. He aspired to teach youth to be the best they could be. Randy had a great connection with all young people and gained personal strength from these relationships.

TRIBUTE TO RANDY SHAW - Submitted by Joe & Patti Schlechter Randy Shaw was the left wing in the line most fans referred to as the “S” line. Centre Joe Schlechter with Randy on the left and Randy’s brother, Gary, on the right. This line was a dynamite line, scoring numerous goals for several years throughout the Sportsman 1970’s. Randy was known for his “soft” hands. Each of them knew where the other was at all times on the ice surface. Their skill and technique would mesmerize the goalie. The goalie never knew who would be the one who would score the goal. During the 1977-1978 season, this line scored 54 goals in a 24 game regular season and in 1978-1979 this line scored a total of 135 points. Randy himself had 74 points (35 goals and 39 assists) in their 30 game season during the 1979-1980 season. They were first in the final round and had no losses.

Randy made the All-Star team numerous times. There was one specific All-Star game held at the Al Ritchie Rink when the Sportsman team took on all the All-Stars of the league. The stands were filled with fans and sometimes you paid a buck for a program. The Leader-Post followed the sport during the league games, provincials and nationals. There were always photos of players and great action shots. One key playoff game against veteran player, Larry Lolacher, who played for the Pilot Butte team, the Sportsman were losing 3-0. With 16 seconds left in the game, the faceoff was at centre ice.

Randy, Gary and Joe put their magic to work and tied the game. They scored 3 goals in 16 seconds and could have won the game in regulation time but hit the goal post. Sportsman won the game in overtime. Randy’s broomball accomplishments are as follows: 1975

• Started his broomball career with the Jolly Roger Pirates (now the Sportsman) 1976/1977 (Sportsman)

• Gold medal City A championships • Gold medal Senior Mens Provincials • Gold medal Western “A” Canadian Championships in Moose Jaw. Randy was named to the 1st

allstar team. This was the last year for this championship and also was the first Saskatchewan provincial championship held at the same time in Moose Jaw

• Bronze medal at the first Canadian National Broomball Championships, Calgary, Alberta 1977/1978

• Gold medal City A championships • Gold medal Senior Mens Provincials • 4th place Canadian National Broomball Championships, Halifax, Nova Scotia

1978/1979 (Sportsman team name changed to Alford’s)

• Gold medal City A championships Gold medal Senior Mens Provincials. Randy was named 1st team allstar

• 4th place Canadian National Broomball Championships, Val D’or, Quebec. Randy was named 1st team allstar (note: this is the only Sportsman/Alford’s player chosen to the Canadian National first team allstar)

1979/1980

• Gold medal City A championships • Silver medal Senior Mens Provincials

Randy played with the Sportsman mens team through to and including the 1983-1984 season. In 1998 the Sportsman mens team was inducted into the Saskatchewan Broomball Hall of Fame for their successes during 1975 to 1980. In Southey in 2000 the first Hall of Fame game was played. The Sportsman team of the 1970’s including Randy took on the 1980’s Hall of Fame Dog ‘n Suds team. The Sportsman won the game 3-1. The Sportsman organization was saddened to hear of Randy’s passing. His death has put a large emptiness in the former and current Sportsman players and fans’ hearts. Randy was a gentle and kind man. When he smiled, he made you feel great. He had a huge heart and opened his home to anyone. We truly will miss him.

2007 Canadian Juvenile Broomball Championships - Host Report (Sandy Holfeld) The 16th Annual Juvenile Broomball Championships took place in Balgonie/Odessa from March 21 – 24,

2007. 7 girls teams from Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, and Manitoba attended. 10 boys teams from

Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, and Alberta attended. The Juvenile category hosts boys and girls

aged 19 and under.

There was tremendous community support for the event. The Broomball community provided several

volunteer hours as well as the local communities themselves.

The opening ceremonies had both French and English athletes saying the athlete’s oath. We had an Elder

bless the ice and the athletes. We had a local girl sing O’Canada. The opening ceremonies were held at noon on

the first day of the event, at the Balgonie Arena.

It was very refreshing to see the parental support that followed all teams to the event. Many teams had

their provincial flags waving when their teams were playing.

The banquet and awards was held at the Turvey Center in Regina. They once again provided an excellent

meal with incredible service.

The province provided a week of incredible play, talent and skills. Not only was there an air of

competition, but a week of new and old friendships that developed.
