LIONEL HAMPTONLIONEL HAMPTON

Lioneljams, circa 1942, with(L-R, First Row): Count Basie,Lionel, Artie Shaw, Les Paul.

(L-R, Back Row): lllionis Jacquet,Tommy Dorsey, Ziggy Elman,

Buddy Rich on drums, bassunknown.

He's been honored by presidents and kings. Hailed bysuperstar musicians and the man on the street. Lionized bynations and adopted by the people.

ln December, 1992, President and Mrs. George Bushpresented Lionel Hampton with the prestigious KennedyCenter Honors, for contributions to the cultural life of thenation. He is one of only five jazz musicians ever to receivethe honor.

Long ago, his grandmother gave Hamp what she thoughtwas a dose of good advice when she said, "Boy quit beatin'on those glasses and dishes with those spoons and go drythem right! Put that silliness out of your head."

The five-year-old drummer told his grandmother,"MammA I might be able to put drumm¡n'out of my head, but I just can't seem to put it out of my heartl"

What his grandmother didn't know was that LionelHampton, a man who would help break the color barrier inAmerican music, would someday be known as "Master of theDrums" and "King of the Vibes,"

Soon after starting his professional career, Hamptonbegan playing for a new band organized by Les Hite, andp]3yed backup to Louis Armstrong in Los Angetes' Cottonölub,

TIÍ|NET HAMPTfIilArmstrong called on Hampton to join in a recording

session with him and, during a break, Hamp wandered overto a vibraharp in the corner of the studio. Until that time, thevibraharp was primarily used for the "pretty sounds" itcreated, not as a solo instrument. Hampton's performance ofEubie Blake's "Memories of Vou" became a classic and itwasn't long before Hampton was known as the "King of theVibes.'

ln 1936, Hamp joined Benny Goodman in his legendaryquartet - with Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa. lt was thebeginning of the "Swing Era' and a musical assemblage ofgreat social significance. The Benny Goodman Ouartetmarked the first time blacks and white played together in amajor musical group.

Hampton's numerous honors range from receiving astatehood award in lsrael to being made a Goodwill Ambas-

" sador by the U.S. State Department.Lionel Hampton continues to amaze people with his

enthusiasm and his concern for all people - raising millionsof dollars for charities, giving young musicians their firstbreak, nurturing stars of the future in his New York Big Band.

Luckily, for his many fans worldwide, Hampton never didmanagd to put drumming out of his head- or out of his heart.

February 28, 1987 TheUniversity of ldahonames its Schod ofMusic the "LionelHampton School ofMusic," the first *hælof Music" the firstSchool of Musicnamed after a jazzmusician.

It's been said the four most common words spoken oniazzradioprograms in America today are probably hese: "on bass, Ray Brown.'

Brown received his first formal training on piano at he age of eight.Later, he discovered a whole new world opening up for him when helearned to play bass by ear. After graduating from high school, Brownwent "on the road" with a number of groups. His reputation as an accom-plished musician preceded his arrival in New York and, after no more thanfour hours, Brown was invited by Dizzy Gillespie to drop by for the followingday's rehearsal, He'was hired and remained with Gillespie for the next twoyears, playing with legends Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and Max Roach.Brown formed his own trio after departing Gillespie's band, with HankJones on piano and Charlie Smith on drums, Soon discovered by NormanGranz, Brown was introduced to Oscar Peterson, resulting in a 15'yearliaison of brilliant music, warm friendship, musical understanding, andrespect. Winner of innumerable awards, including a Grammy in 1963 forBest Original Jazz Composition "Gravy Waltz" (with Steve Allan) and in1990 and 1991 for Best Jazz lnstrumental Performance wih the OscarPeterson Trio, Brown has made hundreds of recordings, scored motionpictures, and performed on maior television s!'tows. The cunent Ray BrownTrio consists of veteran drummer Jeff Hamilton and young piano sensationBenny Green.

JEFF HAITIITTÍI]I

A midwesterner who got his musical start playing in a drum and buglecorps, drummer Jeff Hamilton is now one of the most indemand percus-

sionists on the West Coast. His studio credits run the gamut from sessions with Bud Shank' George

Shearing and Laurindo Almeida to work with Natalie Cole on her Grammy-winning album, tJnforgettable. He's toured the nation and the world, including appearances with B.B. King and Ray Charles as a member of thePhilip Monis Superband.
