Save the Date: Saturday, September 25, 2010, 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., for the JCCCNC’s Annual Fundraising Event, TABEMASHO: From Generation to Generation at the JCCCNC. Since the first Japanese immigrants arrived in America (San Francisco) over 140 years ago, our community celebrated through good times and difficult times with food. This concept that we gather around the table to eat, to celebrate, to remember and rejoice has passed on through the GENERATIONS. This year TABEMASHO is dedicated to the Issei, Nisei, Sansei,Yonsei and to generations to come. To the Issei and Nisei who displayed uncommon strength, courage, selfless giving and unrelenting spirit, we honor them for their guidance, inspiration and foresight in maintaining our culture and sense of community through the food that they passed on to us. To the Sansei,Yonsei and future generations, we share the cooking traditions of our Japanese culture that were so lovingly passed on through the years of which through these generations our food both traditional and new have become international culinary delights and experiences. Join the JCCCNC at TABEMASHO as they celebrate the generations with food tasting from renowned San Francisco restaurants, Food Challenge contests and community comfort foods. There will also be a silent and live auction and the drawing for the JCCCNC Sweepstakes. Tickets for the event are $100 per person, with table and sponsorship opportunities available. For more information, please contact the JCCCNC at (415) 567-5505 or [email protected]. In April, the JCCCNC, in cooperation with Learn Energy, Laplace System, Pro Solar and with a grant from PG&E, installed a new Solar Panel Information and Donor Recognition Kiosk in the second floor hallway. This touch screen interactive display shows, in real time, the amount of clean, renewable energy (kilowatt hours) that is generated by the solar panels that were installed on the gymnasium roof in 2007, as well as the amount reduced in greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions. An amount equal to 324,000 miles of CO2 car emissions have been eliminated through the JCCCNC solar panels since they were installed. The information on the interactive display is available both in English and Japanese. The panel also lists all of the generous donors that helped support the Go Green Solar Panel Project. Thanks to their support, the JCCCNC has saved over 75% of its electric costs since February 2008. Mission StatementThe JCCCNC is a non-profit organization which strives to meet the evolving needs of the Japanese American community by offering programs, affordable services and administrative support and facilities for other local service organizations. The JCCCNC also provides educational, cultural and recreational programs that meet and address the interests and concerns of the community. Our goals remain rooted in preserving the Japanese American cultural and historical heritage as well as fostering the foundation for future generations of Japanese Americans.

In 1942, sixty-eight years ago, San Francisco’s Japantown was under siege by the

City of San Francisco and plans were being discussed of how to ensure that

Japantown could be wiped out of existence forever! Sixty-eight years ago, we

were told that it was for our own good to leave our homes, our businesses and

our community, so we left. WE HAD NO CHOICE, BUT TODAY WE DO HAVE

A CHOICE!

The San Francisco Planning Commission (SFPC) has granted the Japantown BETTER Neighborhood

Planning process another year, to review, improve and make changes to the draft plan that was

acknowledged but not adopted or endorsed by the SFPC last year. This is an important opportunity

and a second chance for the community to really develop a plan that can support the preservation of

our community from a planning perspective.

But we can’t do it alone, we need your help!

Everyone who cares about preserving the cultural and historical integrity of Japantown from both a

traditional and non-traditional planning perspective for future generations is encouraged to be part

of the planning process. No experience is necessary, but people with an interest in urban planning,

preservation, history, community organizing, advocacy, architecture, design, law, civil rights and out-of-

the-box thinkers are encouraged to get involved.

We have an incredible opportunity to improve on and help correct decades of bad planning, injustice,

discrimination and prejudice. From the forced removal to urban renewal, our community fate has been

in the hands of others. This time it is in our hands, our fate. This time it is our future to create. If we

fail, it is our failure; it will be our generation’s legacy.

WE ALL need to STAY ACTIVE and become MORE involved than ever before, if we want this plan

to truly fulfill the goals of helping us preserve and revitalize our historic Japantown. We will not get

another chance. If the plans fail this time around, it’s because WE failed the community, the generations

that came before us and the

generations that will follow

us.

Japantown Forever,

Paul Osaki

JAPANTOWN FOREVER!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

“My father ran the Goshado Bookstore located

on Buchanan Street before WWII, and we had

all kinds of people dropping by the store to find

out the latest news or just to see one another.

It was more like a community drop in center

rather than a place of business. Maybe that is

why I think of the JCCCNC in the same way my

father saw Goshado – a gathering place where

culture and tradition is carried on,” states

Aizawa.

Indeed, the JCCCNC is a venue that strives to

provide not only a sense of community but a

place that values and preserves the culture, history and traditions of

Japan. The Aizawa donation and future contributions to the JCCCNC

will therefore focus on youth programs that introduce young Nikkei

to Japan as well as maintaining our cultural tours and programs.

Depression is not a normal part of the aging process. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 16% of the suicide deaths occurring in 2004 were accounted for by individuals age 65 and older. Depression in older age is an unfortunate growing trend. There are many factors that can impact one’s mental health and, ultimately, one’s quality of life. This workshop will review a variety of risk factors for depression (e.g., isolation, loneliness, dementia, etc.), help participants understand what signs and symptoms to look for, and explore ways in which individuals can help avoid these pitfalls.

Dr. Kimberly Kono is a clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in geriatrics and HIV/AIDS. Dr. Kono was trained at the California School of Professional Psychology, currently holds a position at a local medical school and geriatric community program, and has a private practice in San Francisco. Amey and Hatsuro Aizawa are frequent visitors

to the Japanese Cultural and Community

Center of Northern California (JCCCNC).

Amey usually attends the weekly exercise

classes at the Center and Hats has been active

with the JCCCNC since its inception, as well as

participating in the annual cultural tours to Japan.

Thus, when it came time to creating their estate

plan, they carefully thought about the agencies

that have provided for their needs personally, as

well as for the larger community.

Recently, the Aizawas set up the Hatsuro and

Amey Aizawa Family Charitable Trust and made an initial donation of

$20,000 to the JCCCNC. They have announced plans to include the

JCCCNC and a few other Japantown organizations in their estate

plan.

A Healthy Community The JCCCNC and Dr. Kimberly Kono present A Healthy Community – a column featured regularly in the Center

to help educate the community about healthy aging.

On May 1, more than 1,200 people crowded San Francisco Japantown’s Peace Plaza to celebrate Kristi Yamaguchi’s Children’s Day Festival.

The event—sponsored by the JCCCNC, with support from The Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Charitable Foundation, Hatsuro and Amey Aizawa Family Charitable Trust, San Francisco Japantown Foundation and Community Arts and Education Program of the San Francisco Arts Commission—celebrated children in recognition of the national holiday, Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day), in Japan. The festival featured traditional Japanese crafts like origami (paper folding), gyotaku (fish printing), koinobori (wind carp) and hachimaki (headband) making; bean bag game, hosted by Kintetsu International who is celebrating its 55th Anniversary and provided volunteers in support of their “55 Acts of Kindness” Project, fishing and balloon games; and food booths, hosted by local community organizations; as well as dance and music performances including odori (traditional Japanese dance), mochi (sweet rice) pounding, hula, ukulele, taiko (drumming), shamisen (string instrument), kendo (martial arts) and singing and dancing by youth. Children enjoyed fishing for balloon yo-yos with twisted tissue paper, making fish imprints at the gyotaku station, and singing along with the different preschools from the neighborhood. A free raffle was conducted throughout the day, with prizes from Sanrio Inc. and Viz Media.

The theme of this year’s art contest was the Kanrin Maru, in recognition of the first ship from Japan to land on American soil. The Children’s Day festival was part of the year-long celebration of the 150th anniversary of Kanrin Maru. The 2010 Northern California Cherry Blossom Court selected the winners of the contest. The contest was sponsored by Sakura of America who provided materials and prizes.

The festival was the highlight of a two week Children’s Day celebration during which the JCCCNC offered traditional kimono dressing for kids and hosted over 60 San Francisco public school classes, nearly 1,400 students from kindergarten through second grade for their Children’s Day School Visit Program. Children recognized their favorite Disney characters in the Hinamatsuri (Girls Day) and Tango no Sekku (Boys Day) doll displays, crafted paper koi (carp) and kabuto (helmets), and learned a Japanese folk dance. By learning about the dolls and their history

and through crafts and dance, children were able to learn and celebrate Japanese culture in a way that is meaningful to them, their friends and their families.

For more information or to participate in next year’s Kristi Yamaguchi’s Children’s Day Festival in Japantown, please contact the JCCCNC at (415) 567-5505 or email [email protected].

Performance groups at the festival included: ABC Preschool, Clarendon Elementary School Taiko, Gen Taiko, Hideko Nakajima – Hauta and Shamisen, J-Town Hui, Kagami Kai, Kirakiraboshi Choir, Madame Michiya Hanayagi Dance Group, Halau Ka Liko Pua O Kalaniakea and the San Francisco Kendo Association.

Activity booths were hosted by the following groups: 2010 Cherry Blossom Court, Asobi Arts, Balloon Angels-Pine United Methodist Church, California Highway Patrol, Clarendon Elementary School JBBP, George Washington High School Japanese National Honor Society, Japanese Community Youth Council, Kintetsu International, Nakayoshi, Nichi Bei Weekly, Nihonmachi Little Friends, Nobirukai, Rosa Parks Elementary School-JBBP, St. Ignatius Japanese Language Program and Xperience.

In his United States debut, Jerome Charles White,

Jr., aka Jero, mesmerized a crowd of more than

900 at a concert benefiting the JCCCNC with his

glorious voice and warm personality. The concert

was held March 28 at the Palace of Fine Arts.

Doubling as Master of Ceremonies, Jero shared a

few intimate stories of his life and his love of enka

music with the crowd, some of whom traveled

from Canada, Florida, Georgia, Utah and even

Japan. He told the audience how he first started

listening to enka music at the Pennsylvania home

of his maternal grandmother Takiko, who was

originally from Yokohama, at a very young age.

He shared about how he practiced and learned

his first song that he sang to his grandmother’s

delight. Able to please her through his singing,

he continued to learn and sing for her, finding his

own appreciation and love of the enka classics of

Misora Hibari and others.

Thanking his mother Harumi for her support,

he dedicated his last song, “Hare Butai,” to her.

Getting emotional as he spoke about the difficult

time she must have had growing up as a half

Black and half Japanese child in the 1950s, Jero

nevertheless sang with such beauty and passion

that the crowd leapt to its feet in applause.

provide quality services for yearly youth oriented programs,

workshops and festivals, including Children’s Day School

Visits, the Kristi Yamaguchi Children’s Day Festival, Halloween

Carnival and Track Meet. Additionally, in 2010 the JCCCNC

plans to host dance and basketball camps as well as culturally

enriching workshops such as Mochitsuki (rice cake making).

Enka Singer Jero Makes U.S. Debut with JCCCNC Benefit Concert

PHoto: KaHn yamada

As an encore, Jero first asked the audience to join

him in singing “Ue o Muite Aruko” (“Sukiyaki”),

then closed with his debut hit single “Umiyuki.”

Thanking the audience for their applause, he

promised to “continue to do my best and make

you proud” and ended by saying, “See you the next

time around,” before the final curtain closed.

Takaaki Shiraishi, Jero’s manager, commented,

“The concert was a success. It was the first

time in a while that I really felt the meaning of

what I do; it was a moving experience.”

“This was truly a remarkable event,” said

JCCCNC Executive Director Paul Osaki.

“Jero is our cultural treasure – a nikkei sansei,

cultural ambassador who has helped revive

and reintroduce the Japanese form of singing

considered part of an older generation now to

an entirely new generation and new audiences.”

“He is awesome,” agreed yonsei audience

member Kara Okamoto as she exited the

theatre. Okamoto, a San Francisco realtor, was

so impressed by Jero’s stories and singing that

she has since purchased his albums and now

listens to enka in her car.

This U.S. concert tour was co-presented and co-

sponsored by the Japanese American Cultural

and Community Center (based in Los Angeles)

and the JCCCNC. The JCCCNC would like to

thank the following for their support of the San

Francisco concert and reception: Palace of Fine

Art Theatre, Ozumo Restaurant, the Consulate

General of Japan in San Francisco, Hotel Kabuki,

KTSF, FujiTV, Nichi Bei Weekly, BaySpo and

Ways to Give! How to Help the JCCCNC, Your WaySupport our Spring Annual Support Drive

The revenue raised through the Annual Support Drives helps ensure that the JCCCNC continues to have the ability to provide affordable programs and services to the over 185,000 people who utilize the Center each year. Your tax deductible gift goes a long way to support our community. As the Center faces an unstable economy and increasing costs, support drives have become more important than ever before.

It is easy for you to give to the JCCCNC. Give safely and securely online at www.jcccnc.org. If you prefer, you may drop a check off to the JCCCNC at 1840 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA 94115 or you can also call (415) 567-5505 if you would like to set up recurring payments with your credit card.

Don’t forget that you can give your gift in memory or in honor of someone special or someone who has passed on. If you would like to donate a gift on behalf of someone you know, please send your donation and contact information and we will send out a personal thank you to the family or individual letting them know of your gift to the JCCCNC.

Have your employer double your donation – Corporate fund matching programs or work place giving

Did you know that many corporations offer to match their employee’s donations to non-profit organizations or have a work place giving program? Corporate fund matching programs are a great way to increase your donation and in most cases double your donation. Work place giving programs make it fast and easy to give a gift because you can have your donation automatically deducted from your paycheck. Consult your human resources department to find out more on how you can support the JCCCNC through work place giving.

For questions on giving to the JCCCNC, email [email protected] or call (415) 567-5505. All information and inquiries are kept confidential.
