Our BluesEd bands always are impressive and they have performed at some of the finest festivals & venues in and around Omaha.
• The Blues Society of Omaha has hosted an annual Nebraska Blues Challenge competition for local bands since 2011. Born and raised in Galveston, Texas, Loomis is the son of mu-sician parents who listened to blues, rock and soul. Music ran in his veins and, with instruments readily available around the house, he picked up drums, piano, guitar and harmonica, honing his multi-instrumental talent in addition to perform-ing regularly as part of his family’s doo-wop group.
My parents had a fantastic record collection and, when I started writing, I gravitated towards what I’d been listening to all my life. I have a huge reverence for the blues and all it encompasses, but I’ve always been fond of R&B and funky music.”
A protégé of Bo Diddley, Loomis met the icon backstage at the age of 16 at Houston’s famed venue Rockefeller’s. Before the night was over, Loomis was onstage playing guitar with the legend. Diddley quickly became friend, mentor, collab-orator and supporter, appearing on two of Loomis’ albums and presenting a cherished red guitar that he still plays.
HAMILTON LOOMIS— CD RELEASE PARTY —
Thursday, January 2nd @ 6 pm ($15) • The Jewell, 1030 Capitol Ave., OmahaAdv. tickets at jewellomaha.com
Loomis and crew shine on stage proving his music is best experienced in person, where one can see and hear its intended splendor. De-scribed by Blues Blast Mag-azine as “a non-stop turbo of power, one minute moving from side to side of the stage, and then taking on his horn player in a head-cutting con-test on the apron of the stage the next minute.” Loomis’ energetic, get-in-with–the-crowd antics are infectious. The swaying and clapping are just as he envisioned.
“Being comfortable on stage is something that comes com-pletely natural to me,” he says. “I feel joy when I play music and it literally moves me. It moves my body. I learned long ago that whenever music is coming from you, from deep in-side your soul and from the right place, people will feel that on a deeper level and might not even know what’s going on inside of themselves. I enjoy engaging the crowd and feel a show should be an interactive experience.”

Biscuit Miller has done it again! Following on the success of “Wishbone” comes his 4th Studio Album, “Chicken Grease”. This time around Biscuit has teamed up with Producer Ben Elliot, who has recorded, mixed and produced artists for over 25 years. Ben is known for his expertise in diverse musical genres, having recorded classic artists such as Eric Clapton and Keith Richards, and specializes in the Blues genre. This has turned out to be a great collaboration for Biscuit Miller’s 2019 release of “Chicken Grease”!
Biscuit and his band, The Mix, have been touring extensively ever since winning his first BMA in 2012, recording and re-leasing “Wishbone” in 2016, and winning a second BMA in 2017. The Mix is a sometimes-changing cast of players, but bassist and front man Biscuit Miller is consistently known for his high energy shows and blazing million-dollar smile. He is a born entertainer and is at home on the stage where he connects with his audience through a fun and funky ap-proach to the blues.
Biscuit was introduced to the bass for the first time at the age of eleven when visiting his friend Datrick. It was sitting in a corner collecting dust when the young Biscuit picked it up and started playing it. The four string electric bass be-longed to Datrick’s older brother Darnell, who taught him a couple of songs. Biscuit took to it immediately and thus be-gan a love affair with playing bass that has taken him plac-es he could never have imagined. He formed his first band, Clever, with childhood friend Ivan Wallace. They moved to Minneapolis in 1982. Soon after, a mutual friend, Joe Rowe introduced Biscuit to Sonny Rogers who taught him a lot about playing basic blues. During his time with Rogers, they recorded “They Call Me the Cat Daddy”, which won Rogers a Handy Award for Best New Artist. Sadly, Sonny passed away before he was able to accept the award.
Biscuit then went on to play with other respected blues art-ists such as, Mojo Buford, formerly with Muddy Waters, and Lady Blue, backup vocalist for Ike and Tina Turner. One day, Biscuit received a phone call requesting him to come back home to sub for Chicago’s own legendary Lonnie Brooks who needed a bass player for one night. That one night lasted for over ten years as Biscuit became the permanent bass player for the Lonnie Brooks Band.
In 2000 he formed Biscuit and The Mix to fill up some down-time. During this time, he also completed his first studio re-

cording “Come Together”. Biscuit frequently could be found sitting in with the up and coming blues guitarist Anthony Gomes. During one of these sessions, he was asked to join the band full time and he spent the next five years touring with Anthony. During his time with Anthony Gomes, they released five CD’s; Unity, Sweet Stringin’ Soul, Long Way Home, Music is the Medicine, and Live at the Triple Door.
By 2009 Biscuit was fronting his own band, touring the country playing clubs and festivals, and gaining respect as a front man and bassist alike. Biscuit Miller has graced the covers of several publications, including the 2006 Blues Fest Guide and the February/March 2010 edition of Big City Rhythm & Blues. In 2012 he was awarded his first Blues Mu-sic Award following the release of his second studio record-ing, “Blues With A Smile”. Having received wide air play on Sirius XM Radio, “Blues With A Smile” is aptly named, as Bis-cuit is known around the world for his huge, heartfelt smile as well as his antics as a funky bassist turned front man. His 2016 release, “Wishbone”, brought Biscuit even more success and a second BMA in 2017. His reach has expanded to garner international recognition and an ever-increasing fan base. He has played Blues Festivals in Quebec in 2018, and the Grolsch Blues Festival in Germany in the summer of 2019 in addition to several festivals in North America, one of which can be heard on a live recording that was released independently in 2017. When he is not busy touring or re-cording, Biscuit loves to spend time with his friends and family. His grandchildren are especially precious to him. Also precious to him are the rare occasions when he is able to sit down with his entire family over a home cooked meal. Like the one that happened on Thanksgiving when his 3rd album, “Wishbone” was born!
Of course, like “Wishbone”, there is a back story to his choosing the title of “Chicken Grease” which has to do with Biscuit’s newly found passion for the game of golf. But, that’s a story you’ll have to ask him about in person! Bis-cuit & The Mix love connecting with their many fans and friends whenever and wherever they play, so please watch for them to come to a venue or festival near you! You won’t be disappointed.
And in the words of the man himself, “Put Some Chicken Grease On It!”

Tas Cru is truly a blues eclectic who refuses to let his music be bound to just one blues style. You get it all from Tas. He’ll swing you with a traditional shuffle, swoon you with a sul-try ballad, lull you into a trance with deep Hill-country blues and then rock your knobs off. If you want to be entertained, Tas is your guy. With a repertoire of over 60 original songs from multiple albums and dozens of crowd-pleasing clas-sics, this seasoned road warrior will give folks what they want be it festival, concert or dance hall.
Tas has been called one of the most unique of bluesmen plying his trade to-day. His songs testify to his reputation as a bluesman who is accomplished in and comfortable with most every style of blues. As a writer Tas wants his songs to determine the style, rather than the oth-er way around. And that’s why fans love his stuff and critics sing his praises. With great vocal and guitar work alongside his trademark well-crafted lyrics, this music is an interesting and enjoyable listen. Performed live it is captivating – highly entertaining!
Tas Cru is currently is based out of up-state New York and performs in multiple formats ranging from solo acoustic to a 7 piece-backing band. He sings and plays a wide variety of guitars - at home on either electric, acoustic, resonator or cigar box and is known to sprinkle in a bit of har-monica from time to time. Tas is a Delaney Guitars (Austin TX) endorsed artist and is signed to Subcat Records, Syracuse NY.

Thursday, January 23rd @ 6 pm ($10) • Stocks n Bonds, Omaha
With three hot albums in the last five years – You Keep the Money, Simmered & Stewed and Memphis Song – Cru has readied another for 2020 - Drive On. In addition to his bet-ter-known albums is Tas’ 2009 release, Even Bugs Sing the Blues, an album of original blues music for kids. In 2016 he recorded a blues album for dog lovers called Doggone Blues that is now being turned into a three-book series featuring the dog characters from these songs working together to try to form an all dog blues band. The first of this book series, Bad Dog Bubba, is now available.
As a Blues Foundation, Keeping the Blues Alive award re-cipient (2014), besides performing, Cru brings his Blues Ed-ucation programs and workshops to festivals, schools, and hospitals everywhere he travels. In 2019, Tas began his affiliation with United By Music North America; a program serving differently challenged young adult musicians. Thus far, Cru has traveled to the Pacific Northwest and Memphis, TN to mentor participants. Tas says, “Working with UBMNA has brought me back to why I began playing music in the first place – for the pure joy of doing so!”
His brand new album, Drive On, is the latest soundtrack of a man who, living the life he chooses, just keeps drivin’ on.

DUSTIN ARBUCKLE AND THE DAMNATIONSThursday, January 30th @ 6 pm • Ozone Lounge, 7220 F Street, Omaha
A veteran of the progressive roots scene, Dustin Arbuckle (formerly of Moreland and Arbuckle) continues kicking up dust with Dustin Arbuck-le & The Damnations. A musician of vast appetites, he’s long held an appreciation for traditional American music in the vein of Charley Patton as well as the cross-pollinated sounds of The Band or Stax-style soul. His work with The Damnations allows for that along with occasionally for-ays into deep country and even jazz.
The Kansas native marks hearing the Leadbelly classic “Gallows Pole” as his earliest music memory, becoming an astute devotee of the blues by the time he’d reached his teens. “That turned out to be a jump-ing off point, though,” he says. “I always loved Howlin’ Wolf, but as I got older and started opening my mind to a wider range of music, I’d turn around and listen to the Allman Brothers Band, then Johnny Cash, Sam & Dave, or Tom Petty
& The Heartbreakers. I hope you’ll hear some of that reach with The Damnations.”
Arbuckle, who also fronts the Kan-sas-based acoustic group Haymak-ers, will release a live Damnations EP in March 2019, recorded at Min-neapolis’ Hook & Ladder Theater & Lounge, while laying the foundation for the outfit’s first full-length studio LP. (The group released its self-ti-tled debut EP in 2017.)
Arbuckle says fans will hear an evo-lution in the new music with feet planted firmly in the world of roots music he’s known for. “When I formed this group in 2016, I really believed anything could happen, from a musi-cal standpoint,” he offers. “What we’ve done since then has gone beyond my own expectations and I really can’t wait to see what we do next.”

From Lash,
We spent time with kids at three schools today. Thanks to Barnes & Noble, each child went home with a new book as well as a toy.
One girl was having a hard time picking and when asked if she needed help said “When do I have to return it?” When told that it was hers to keep, her eyes lit up and she smiled SO big.
As this bitter cold moves in, remember that you can donate to the emergency propane fund and literally save lives all winter long at ToyDriveForPineRidge.org.
A Huge Thank You to everyone that contributes and helped with this year’s Toy Drive for Pine Ridge events .... stories like this say more than we ever can about how much difference a small gift can make for a child on the reservation.

Born and raised on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, Indigenous front man Mato Nanji was exposed to his father’s vast collection of blues records by legendary artists. Mato embraced his own musi-cal talent at a young age. Mato, his brother, sister and cousin formed the band Indigenous while in their late teens. They released their award-winning debut album Things We Do in 1998. Indigenous’ music caught the attention of blues icon B.B. King and the young band was invited to play on his annual B.B. King’s Blues Tour in 1999. Four albums were released before the 2006 decision by the siblings to ‘disband’ and pursue their own musical paths, while Mato carried on with the Indigenous name. Seven albums later, Mato is still writing and producing music with the latest offering “Gray Skies.”
In addition to Indigenous, Mato Nanji has been a roster member of the critically acclaimed Experience Hendrix Tour since 2002, just wrapping up a record breaking 17th year of playing to sold out crowds alongside orig-inal Jimi Hendrix band member Billy Cox, along with Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and many others. 2020 marks Mato’s induction into the South Dakota Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
