The parks of Paris

We asked some ISP Paris parents for their favourite parks in and around the city and we got some great suggestions:

Jardin du Ranelagh“This is our local! Situated very close to the Primary campus, these lovely, open gardens are a hang-out for ISP families. The scene of many an ISP picnic, the Jardin du Ranelagh is a firm favourite.”

Bois de Boulogne“A green space very local to ISP, the Bois de Boulogne is a huge ‘green lung’ on the western edge of Paris. There are cycle trails, lakes and woods, plus some special gardens. It contains the Jardin d’Acclimatation, a 20 acre amusement park popular with Primary aged kids. That in turn houses the Fondation Louis Vuitton, a cultural hotspot housing great art exhibitions within a stunning Frank Gehry building.”

“If you are wandering around the Bois de Boulogne, do not miss the Parc de Bagatelle, a lovely 18th century park and chateau. Also, we love the Pre-Catalan gardens which are home to the Jardin du Shakespeare, an outdoor theatre.”

Parc Andre Citroen“Those of us living in the 16th can sometimes forget about the wonderful Parc Andre Citroen, which is just a stroll over the river in the 15th. It’s a very modern park, built on the former Citroen car plant. It’s a refreshing change, with its more modern design, water jets that kids love, the chance to see Paris from its hot air balloon. Give it a try!”

Jardin des Tuileries“The Tuileries gardens have to be a contender for one of the most elegant parks in Paris. The manicured trees and flowers are exquisite. Those instantly recognisable green chairs around the water! Happy memories from when our kids were a bit younger and they loved the carousel, the trampolines and the playground.”

“We could never tire of the Tuileries! The beauty, but also the Orangerie Museum which is home to Monet’s waterlilies and also the Jeu de Paume photography museum. And don’t forget the Musee des Arts Decoratifs and its restaurant Loulou with one of the nicest terrasse in the city.”

“Don’t forget to pay a visit to WHSmith English bookstore when you’re at the Tuileries – it’s just outside the gardens on rue de Rivoli at the Concorde end.”

Jardin du Luxembourg“The Jardin de Luxembourg, an elegant, Parisian classic on the borders of the 5th and 6th arrondissements is for many the ultimate Paris park. The beauty of the place enchants most people. A Sunday family stroll, wooden toy boats on the little lake, pony rides, the sound of tennis balls and smaller children in the rose garden sandboxes. Pure Paris!”

“If you’re at the Luxembourg, pay a visit to Penelope who runs the lovely Red Wheelbarrow bookstore just outside the gardens. And maybe lunch at Treize au Jardin? Or Bread and Roses on rue Madame, very close to the park?”


Jardin des Plantes“The Jardin des Plantes used to be a herb garden for the French royals and now it’s a lovely botanical garden, with museums and a mini-zoo within its borders. It’s a great option for a family stroll and never gets as busy as its more famous cousins, the Luxembourg and Tuileries. Also it positions you perfectly for exploring the 5th arrondissement. Don’t forget to stop for tea and cakes at the nearby Mosque tea room, which is open to all.”

Parc de Buttes Chaumont“Now the Buttes Chaumont is a total change from the elegant Tuileries! The Buttes Chaumont has a big personality. It’s quirky and dramatic. And you can sit on the grass!”

Parc de Belleville“Definitely worth the trip up to the 20th arrondissement to the Parc de Belleville. It slopes up and when you reach the top, you get wonderful views of the city! Long water feature and kids’ playgrounds add to the appeal.”

Parc de la Villette“You either love it or hate it, but our family loves the more urban feel to this park in the north-east of the city. The Parc de la Villette is the third biggest park in Paris and houses Cite des Sciences (the science museum) as well as Cite des Enfants and the Philharmonie, which has great family music events. There are the themed gardens and a favourite with kids is the dragon slide. A visit to this park also leaves you perfectly positioned to stroll on the Canal d’Ourcq.”

Parc Monceau“The pretty Park Monceau is on the border of the 8th and 17th arrondissements and is a lovely spot. It’s designed in the English style and so is not as formal as some other Paris parks. Winding paths, a venetian bridge, a pyramid and a Chinese pagoda, carousels and playgrounds attract the rather beautiful local families of this neighbourhood. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the Musee Jacqumart Andre which is very close by.”

Parc Montsouris“The Parc Montsouris is a down-to-earth, lovely family park. You can walk and picnic on the grass. There are ponies that you lead around yourself. It’s set in the family-friendly neighbourhood of the 14th and just makes a refreshing change from the city’s more manicured spots.”

Bois de Vincennes“Over on the east side of Paris, the Bois de Vincennes is the other green lung of Paris, rather similar to our more local Bois de Boulogne. But there are attractions to draw you over there, including the beautiful Parc Floral and the Chateau de Vincennes. Our family is less keen on the Paris Zoo which is also over there – after an expensive renovation, it remains an uninspiring place.”

Parc de Sceaux“Ok, it’s not technically in Paris, but Parc de Sceaux is a beautiful place and it’s really not far by car or RER. Our favourite time there is the spring for the blossoms but it’s beautiful all year round.”

Jardin Albert Kahn“I am always shocked that so few families have made it to the Jardin Albert Kahn in Boulogne. It is so close to the 16th and such a special place. The museum is currently being renovated and we can’t wait to see the new restaurant once it opens. But the gardens are the main event and it is such a special voyage through the English, French and Japanese sections!”


Day trips from Paris

We asked ISP parents for some of their favourite family day trips from Paris:

Chantilly“Our trip to Chantilly was one of our favourite days from Paris. Even the beautiful grounds are worth the visit, before you even go into the chateau. Our kids loved the maze and The Children’s Hamlet – two play areas, one for 3 – 6 year olds with a huge snail-shaped play area covered in grass, mini wooden houses and farm animals on springs. The other is for children aged 8 to 12, with a play structure on which bigger children can climb and jump from. There is also the Petit Parc with sheep and kangaroos and from April to November, a mini train.”

PTA TIPOn Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays you can take a coach out to Chantilly from rue des Pyramides in central Paris run by ParisCityVision An alternative however, is to take the train from Gare du Nord to Chantilly-Gouvieux and then it’s a five-minute taxi ride or 20 minute walk to the Chateau or a free DUC bus ride to ‘Chantilly, Eglise Notre Dame.

Fontainebleau“Our family loves heading out to Fontainebleau. The chateau is beautiful and has great gardens. What is wonderful is that it has adjoining town and forests to give a little variety for the kids.”

PTA tip: Getting there is easy – just take a train from Gare de Lyon. The green space around the chateau fabulous for bike riding and the town overall is nice too.

Giverny“Clearly this is a must-do trip out to Giverny to see what was Claude Monet’s house and garden for 40 years and where he created his famous Waterlily paintings. Just a 45 minute train ride from Gare St Lazare in Paris to Vernon and then a shuttle bus – timed to meet each train and bring visitors to the Monet house. It’s a special experience.”

PTA TIPBefore you visit, do think about introducing your kids to Monet and his Waterlilies through a visit to the Orangerie museum inside the Tuileries gardens in Paris. You can also find some in our local museum, the Marmottan which is located very close to the Ranelagh Primary campus. There are also many picture books for children such as Katie and the Waterlily Pond and The Magical Garden of Claude Monet that are great introductions for 3 – 7 year olds. Also, be sure to but advance tickets.

Parc Asterix“If you want a theme park experience that is rather different to Disney, then Parc Asterix is it. Yes, it’s based on the characters from the famous comic books but, even if your children are not into Asterix, Obelix and their merry friends, it is still fun.”


Auvers-sur-Oise“ Don’t miss Auvers-sur-Oise, a beautiful village outside Paris, best known for being the residence of Vincent Van Gogh. He lived and painted there, as did Cezanne, Pissarro, Corot and Daubigny. If you visit, you’ll see why they chose it. As well as the village, you can explore the 17th century Château d’Auvers-sur-Oise, with its lovely park and gardens. From April through October, a direct train runs from Gare du Nord in Paris to Auvers-Sur-Oise in the morning and back again early evening, making this a very easy day out in spring, summer and early autumn.”

PTA TIPGiven the timings of the trains, do think about bringing food for a scenic picnic lunch or make plans to eat at Chateau restaurant. Another nice option in the village is the little restaurant Le Chemin de Peintres. If you eat at Auberge Ravoux, you can go upstairs to see Vincent Van Gogh’s bedroom which also happens to be his final resting place.

Versailles“Who doesn’t adore Versailles? The Palace, the Gardens, The Grand Trianon are amazing, as is the Petit Trianon area, created by Marie Antoinette as a rural escape, away from the pomp of Versailles.”

PTA TIPThere is so much to see and do here that it is advisable to just try and see some of it, rather than exhaust your kids. You know you can pop back to see the rest! To get there, SNCF trains will bring you from Gare Montparnasse to Versailles Chantiers or from Gare Saint Lazare to Versailles Rive Droite. The RER line C will bring you to Versailles Chateau Rive Gauche. There is also the Versailles Express coach that will bring you from central Paris.

Disneyland“I mean you won’t feel like you are at the one in Florida, but it’s still a fun family day out. It is really two parks, Walt Disney Studios and Disneyland Park. Take the RER A from either Chatelet or Gare de Lyon to Marne –La Vallee which brings you right to the entrance of Disney. It couldn’t be easier. If you’ve got younger children, they will be more than happy with the gentle ‘It’s a Small World’ ride, and Spinning Teacups at the Disneyland Park.”

PTA TIPBe warned that if they want to meet a Princess, you should reserve that immediately upon your arrival.

Learning the language

The best way to learn the French language is to take some instruction and practice, practice, practice. Watching French TV helps conversational skills.

ISP’s very own Laetitia Beser, Berlitz trained, offers instruction in her home. These small classes are a good way to meet other ISP parents and learn how to get by in daily life. 06 81 77 52 86 [email protected]

TransportationSECTION TWO:

Public transport

RATP governs public transport in Paris and its suburbs. You can purchase a pre-paid weekly, monthly (approx. 75 Euros) or annual student or adult Navigo Pass (see below) at major stations. The old system of a “carnet” of paper tickets is being transitioned out, so buy yourself the new version which is a “Navigo Easy” pass, which you simply load with tickets and use them up without a time limit. You need to think about how often you will use public transport, to help you decide whether to buy a weekly/monthly Navigo for unlimited travel, or the Navigo Easy because you will use it less and so simply want to buy prepaid trips that you will use up without a time limit. If you have the wrong ticket or misplace a ticket, you will be fined a minimum of 35E. Children 0-3 travel for free, ages 4-9 travel at the reduced rate, 10 and up pay the regular fare.

RATPInformation is available in English, French, Italian, German, Dutch, and Spanish at www.ratp.fr With one ticket you can transfer between Metro and RER/Tram, Metro and Metro, RER/Tram and RER, bus and bus. There is no transferring between buses and metro/RER/trams.

MetroThe primarily underground Metro runs daily from around 5:30 AM to 1am. It’s a good idea to keep your tickets in your pockets as thieves like reaching over turnstiles and grabbing wallets.

RERThe RER requires you to put your ticket through the turnstile to get in AND TO GET OUT. It operates from 5:30 AM to 1 AM depending on the line.

BusYou can use your carnet or buy bus tickets directly from the bus driver when you board. Validate your ticket! With a carnet ticket you can transfer to a different bus provided you validate your ticket on the second bus within 90 minutes after validating on the first bus. The 2E tickets sold by bus drivers can’t be used again to transfer to another bus. Noctilien night buses operate a limited route after midnight.

VelibVélib’ is a self-service bike system available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Buy a 1-day or a 7-day ticket online or at any Vélib’ station.

For an annual pass, pick up a free Velib card from the Hotel de Ville gift shop, sign-up on line, and activate it at a Velib station. Both require a credit card deposit. Citymapper or the Velib App will direct you to the nearest Velib station and tell you how many bikes, parking spots are available. Ages 14 and up but some stations carry kids bikes. http://en.velib.paris.fr/How-it-works


AutolibAutolib’ is a rentable electric car also run by the City of Paris. You can rent them for periods of time. (Only International driver’s licenses or European licenses are accepted.) www.autolib.eu/en/how-does-it-work/service/

NavigoA Navigo pass will allow you to buy monthly or yearly metro, bus and RER access. To purchase, you must have a bill with your name and address listed on it, as well as identification. You can order online or at your local Metro station. An adult pass runs 75.20E a month. Student cards are available at a reduced yearly rate- to qualify a student certificate from ISP is necessary. www.navigo.fr

Uber/Ride Share Taxis via Smartphone AppsYou must provide your credit card information to use these services. They’re popular because unless there’s a “fare surge” due to rain, rush hour, a high demand, the fares are more reasonable. The app charges your card so no cash is necessary. The most popular apps are:

Rental CarsThe major rental car companies have offices in Paris. Check the Internet for your favorite company for locations. Passports may be needed for the contract. Cars available on an hourly basis (gas and insurance included):

SecuritySAIP: French government app alerts users of security incidents. However, SAIP was not activated for any of the recent terror attacks in France. It’s best to go on TWITTER and follow the Prefecture de Police, VISOV I #MSGU, Gouvernement, GendarmerieNationale, Police Nationale, Pompiers de Paris, Conseils Voyageurs,

Anne Hidalgo, Le Parisien, BBC Breaking News, Paris, Groupe RATP… to stay up to date on what’s going on in France.

French driving licence

If at all possible have your company or relocation agent take care of it.

From a country or US state that has a reciprocal agreement:1. Find if the country/state is reciprocal. (Subject

to change) www.ambafrance-us.org/spip.php?article376 You are supposed to be in possession of your own country/US driver’s license for one year before coming to France. Do not try to trade your California driver’s license (non-reciprocating) for a Pennsylvania license (reciprocating) in the US one week before coming to France and expect them to accept the Pennsylvanian one for trade, for example.

2. You have ONE YEAR from the start of your work visa to obtain a reciprocal driver’s license. You must officially start the process 3 mnths before the end of that one year term. After that, you are not allowed to obtain the license-- you must start fresh and take the test like everyone else. Each country/state has different exchange requirements but most require electric and phone bills addressed to you at your former address to prove you lived in the country/state where you got your license, attestation from our official driving record from your license country stating your license is still valid and has no outstanding warrants or fines, your driver’s license, all translated. SOGEDICOM 102 Ave des Champs Elysees, www.sogedicom-traduction.com will provide an official translation of your driver’s license for around 60E. You can e-mail them a photo/scan and they will e-mail you the translated document with official stamp by PDF.

3. You will need to go to the Prefecture de Police (Porte de Clignancourt on Boulevard Ney, 75018). You can call ahead for an appointment or just show up and they will direct you to the correct location. This process could take hours. Avoid bringing small children.

4. Once you have submitted everything required, they will give you a paper asking you to return in about a month to pick up your license-allow yourself an hour for pick up. Ask politely if you may keep your original driver’s license as you’ll need it for ID and you return to your country often and need it to drive. Cheque writing

Cheque writing is still very common in France but a little confusing if you haven’t written one before. Below is a sample check with explanations, along with the most common numbers written out.

Cheque Writing Tips• French cheques must be written in French!• On the left side of French cheques is a space to

write some brief information about the amount and type of cheque. It will be located on the left side of the cheque near the perforated edge.

• Try not to leave space at the beginning or end of your cheque for fraud reasons.

• Often, people will put ///// marks so no additional numbers or words could be added to the cheques.

• Never carry a booklet of cheques with you in your purse or around Paris if possible. It is always best to fill the cheque at home or carry one with you for a specific purpose.

Medical tips

Common over the counter medicines for childrenTylenol/Parecetemol Given for fever/pain. In France, it is available as Doliprane or Efferalgan as packets to mix with water, suppositories, or syrup. Ask the pharmacist for dosage as it varies with weight.

Ibuprofen Given for fever/pain. In France, it is available as Nureflx or Advil.

Coughs In France, available as Rhinathiol. It is a cough mixture that thins secretions.

Allergies Primalen-antihistamine given to children.

Head Lice-Pouxit One of the more popular brands. You will need a comb and a lot of patience.

PTA TIPIt is ALWAYS a good idea to buy this product even if your child does not have head lice and keep it in your cupboard.

Worms Fluvermal is a de-worming syrup/pill used for threadworm and roundworms.

PTA TIPISP school nurses will help make you make medical appointments in French because receptionists at Doctor’s offices often don’t speak English. Just ask!

La Rentree Back to School Try the tiny, green, sour looking plums called Reine -Claude, they are sweet, juicy and available for only a month. It’s harvest time in French wine regions, 12 packs of Snickers will be on sale for 5Euros, bienvenue en France!

September 16 -17 Journées du Patrimonie weekend opportunity to visit the president’s home, Banque du France, National Assembly, various Embassies etc that are normally closed to the public.

September 30th Oct. 1 Arc de Triomphe Qatar Horse Race in Chantilly

October 7-8 Nuit Blanche all night art & music festival at various museums & art galleries.

October 31st always falls during the Toussaint Break. IF you’d still like to carve a jack o’lantern, drive or Uber to Ferme de Gailly’s pumpkin patch and pick other fruit and vegetables. Jardin d’Acclimatation’s Atelier usually offers a carving workshop during the break.

Department stores will open early and Hermes holds its big sale at Port Maillot’s Palais de Congres- be prepared to queue to get in, queue to see square scarves, queue to see oblong scarves…If you’re in a hurry do not wear Hermes and dress lightly to avoid the extra cloak and declare your Hermes goods line.

January 27 -28 St. Vincent Wine Festival Saint-Veran. Burgundy villages take turns hosting St. Vincent’s name day. A parade with chevaliers of each village, tasting Saint Veran wines, and food stalls serving Burgundy cuisine…escargot, eggs poached in red wine, boeuf bourgignonne.


February 2 La Chandeleur: The one day of the year you can get away with forcing your kids and partner to make crepes for dinner. For good health and fortune, hold a coin in your good hand, and flip the crepe with your crepe pan in your non-dominant hand. Galettes are savory buckwheat flour crepes and “le complet” ham, cheese and fried egg is the French favorite. Beurre sucre, crepes made with wheat flour, served simply with melted butter and granulated sugar is the most popular dessert crepe!

February 13 Mardi Gras the one day you’ll see French kids dressed in costume. Try the mardi gras cookies at your boulangerie.

Miscellaneous

• In addition to the dryer water reservoir and lint tray, be sure to empty and wash the “extra” lint drawer at the bottom of your dryer at least once a month. Be ready with a large shallow bowl as water might come pouring out! Some use the dryer water for ironing.

• Washing machines require an anti-calcaire tablet to avoid calcium build-up in the lines. Calgon is popular but supermarket brand tablets work just as well.

• The famous paper carnet metro tickets are being phased out. Look for the Navigo Easy which is their replacement!

• If you are lost, go to a bus stop. There are maps of the vicinity to help you find your way.

• Make friends with your local pharmacist, especially the one who speaks English. If your son comes home with a partially detached toenail or your husband needs a vaccine on Saturday the pharmacist can recommend a neighborhood doctor who can help them. If you burn yourself badly, he/she can dress the wound and/or sell you a patch that reduces scarring.

• Don’t be afraid to talk to your local vendors to practice your French. Wherever you are, always begin

with a “Bonjour Monsieur/Madame” and become part of your neighborhood.

• “L’addition, s’il vous plaît!” Tipping—A service charge is normally added to restaurant bills and will be stated on the menu. Although not required, some people tip.

– Leave the small change in a café, say .20- .50 centimes and then a few extra Euros for dinner. Depending on the service, 1-5 €, per person, is appropriate.

Home ContractsElectricity Read the electricity meter, write the number down then call EDF on the day you move to terminate your contract.

Home Phone / Internet / Cable Call the service provider (3900 if Orange) and state the day to terminate the contract. Take the Orange box to any Orange store. They will give you a ticket (bon de resiliation) to prove all the materials have been returned.

Mobile phone Call the operator (Orange: dial 3970 from a landline or 700 from a mobile) and ask for termination of service (resiliation de service). You will need a document from work stating you are moving abroad from your company if you haven’t completed your e.g. 2 year contract. Terminate 10 days in advance, as services won’t terminate until then.

Rental insurance Terminate 30 days in advance; otherwise, they will charge for an additional 30 days.

Letters and parcels etc To redirect mail to a new address. Go to the post office with IDs of all persons in your household or online (no need for IDs). A fee is charged depending on how many people, for how long, which country etc.

Banking The account needs to remain open for a few months to pay the remaining bills and to receive reimbursements.
