1. She worked with the team on Vaccine Hesitancy Study (Survey) to understand thepossible reasons behind being hesitant about getting COVID-19 vaccine. Sheconducted telephonic interviews with allocated NGOs associated with CRY.

2. During the period of her volunteering she actively participated in an onlinecampaign that had been set up to raise funds for the education of children which hasbeen severely impacted during COVID 19. This was done with the aim to reach outto 100+ children by providing relief and education kits. The campaign helped raisemore than Rs. 1 lakhs and she single handedly raised Rs. 3500.

Executive summary

Samvedana trust began in 2003 with a simple initiative – to make a change. It was much

needed, it still is. Their journey was not an easy one.

Samvedana has reached out to 350000 beneficiaries in last two decades. Through Sattva

drive, they have accomplished a success rate of getting 70.6% of identified infants and

mothers out of malnourishment, as mapped on thier customised software.

I along three other volunteers of Institute of management Nirma University have tried to

make an impact in the lives of small children by educating them and enhancing their

personality through workshops etc.

About the organisation- SAMVEDANA

Samvedana is a not-for-profit organization that is helping

- underprivileged children in gaining education,

- underprivileged and unemployed women in gaining skills, and in earning their own

livelihood

In a society where the underprivileged believe that more hands mean more money – but fail

to understand that more hands also mean more mouths to feed, they tried to penetrate into

the darkest corners and touch those who were crouching within, bereft of sunshine or

daylight. Low-income group people by providing them food

Some of the successful projects run by Samvedana are: -

1. Akshara Through this initiative, Samvedana is bringing positive change in children’s lives and

helping them in becoming useful members of society. It not only enhances the

knowledge and skill of the students but also provides guidance to parents through

workshops which enables their children to lead a successful life.

2. Vasant Pathshala

This project empowers the rural children and helps them in becoming self -reliant.

Samvedana empowers and educates these children to make their future more hopeful.

3. Eklavya For becoming a part of this project, students are required to appear for an entrance test

and score at least 70%. The parents of these students are also counselled so that the

students can be provided with as much support as possible. In this initiative,

Samvedana helps the students till they become independent.

4. Sattva

Through this project, Samvedana is working on fighting malnutrition.

Under this project, Samvedana has adopted 76 Anganwadis. Samvedana is providing

nourishment to 5000 people belonging to low-income groups.

5. Happeee Even during these uncertain times, Samvedana has not stopped in providing education

to children. In fact, it has made sure the best out of these difficult times by not only

providing regular classes, but also personality workshops like Parivartan. Samvedana

is also responsible for connecting the students with facilitators of different cultures

from across the world.

MRS. JANKI VASANT

Janki Vasant is an eminent social activist with an experience of 25 years in the field of

education. Social service has been in her family and she was born to well-known social

activist parents. Being the brainchild of hers, the inspiration for initiating Samvedana has

been through her association with numerous social activities and organizations like Citizen’s

Council, UNICEF, VISAMO Kids, Yuva Unstoppable in the past.

Mrs. Janki Vasant, Founder of Samvedana-

Her life was changed at a young age as a result of her being one of the passengers who were

hostage on the hijacked PANAM aircraft in Karachi in 1986. This tragedy brought her closer

to life's real values, allowing her to understand true human nature and connectivity with

others.

“If You have a purpose, means will follow” – With this philosophy she has dedicated her life

to the underprivileged, eventually working towards modifying lives and environments .

A passionate deep seeded trust that education, empowers, drives her to reach out to the

children. With a motto- “Not just education, but quality education is the right of every child”,

she founded Samvedana in 2003; a platform to create opportunities and interdependence

through inclusive synergy. Her area of focus is strengthening the Public Education system,

Infant Nourishment – early care and Skill trainingfor the haveapurpose,means integrated

development of socially and economically deprived children, youth and women. She started

working in the slums with informal education, soon adopted a public school. Today,

Samvedana has created an ecosystem that is doing some great work in our community. What

started as a remedial bridge program with 30 children, has today reached to and worked with

over 125,000 beneficiaries over the past 14 years.

She received the most prestigious National Honour; ‘Nari Shakti Puraskar 2016’, by

President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan on International Women’s Day. Yet immense work

Future strategy/plans of Samvedana India lives in its villages! Samvedana believes to empower India we need to empower our villages. Samvedana's first

step was 'Vasant Pathshala', a rural school focusing on 21st century skills along with impactful inclusive programs with volunteers and parents. This non- profit organization’s (NPO), future plan is to scale deeper, to create an ecosystem in the surrounding 25 identified villages with interventions to give quality education and exposures through 21st century

skills, create higher education opportunities through our scholarship program for meritorious rural girls, support challenges of malnutrition in early years, work with adolescent girls by creating opportunities of growth and skill training. We have created remedial education modules to strengthen English in the gram panchayat schools. We aspire to create a

community at our rural centre at Lana with likeminded interested in contributing towards rural development.

Goals • To expand our scholarship children to 500 from 16 urban and rural districts of

Ahmedabad.

• Transform 25 identified villages in southern outskirt of the city of Ahmedabad through interventions in the area of education, nutrition and skills.

• Build a Sports complex at our rural centre to benefit the youth of 25 villages in the

periphery.

PART B: Details of the Project Work

Experiential Learning Project (Type –III)

1. Introduction

Project-1 VASANT PATHSHALA

Through education, at Vasant Pathshala, Samvedana is committed to empower the rural community to imagine a better future for them and work proactively towards achieving it. The major challenges faced in education sector in rural areas are Lack of quality teachers,

especially English-speaking teachers, lack of transportation facilities, lack of exposure, much less availability of resources, limiting mindsets for girl child education and more. Pathshala is Samvedana’s intervention to tackle the above and bring quality education at the doorsteps f or rural children.

Apart from education through books and classrooms, Vasant Pathshala also aims to accomplish various other objectives such as improving the standard of living, health, hygiene and nutrition of the children. We also motivate parents to be a part of the school and take part in various activities such as sports, cultural programs, etc. Through these objectives, we aim

to turn these kids into responsible citizens of tomorrow who can lead self-sustainable lives in the villages.

IMPRTANCE OF THIS INITIATIVE

As per the 2011 census data, the rate of urbanization has risen from 38% to 43% in the last 10 years, which means people are moving from rural areas to urban cities. One of the major reasons behind this is the lack of good quality education in rural areas. Most of the schools in those areas lack proper infrastructure and have poor teaching faculty.

Vasant Pathshala is working to give them an alternative that can help them develop their lives without neither deviating from their roots nor migrating to the cities. The NGO believes that 21st-century skills should be the backbone of the education system in today’s times. Along with literacy, we aim to work on social skills, communication skills, digital literacy,

creativity, vocational skills and more for integrated development of the student.

“A child without education is like a bird without its wings.”

Education is the best gift one can give to the child. It is the only effective way to empower the children to break through the shackles of poverty and transcend their families to higher strata. It also represents a double investment – an investment in the child and an investment

towards the future of the slum community.

Eklavya is Samvedana’s commitment to offering educational scho larships to meritorious students to achieve their career goals. Based on their age and development factors it works with the children by adapting our support to their changing needs. Since 2005, the NGO has

been identifying deserving students from the community and working towards nurturing their potential.

Project Eklavya is a unique project in which the NGO selects underprivileged children coming from humble backgrounds wherein the parents earn their living through occupations like sweepers, cleaners, vendors, labourers, drivers and domestic help. Yet, they’re bright and

deserving students, who need a little help so as to be inculcated in the mainstream. Samvedana meets with this grave need through the supplementary teaching centres to provide with quality education, offer health- welfare programs, does handholding and mentorship. Samvedana has its functioning in different areas in and around the city of Ahmedabad;

covering 16 Municipal and Government Schools of the city from where we select deserving and bright students entering Class 9 which is a crucial year for their future education. Support

is provided in the form of scholarship for their school and tuition fees; and in some cases, supplementary tuitions given by volunteers.

2. Methodology

ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY Since the internship was work-from-home based I was not able to observe the culture of the organisation hand to hand, but even through the online medium I was able to observe the sincerity to help underprivileged children and women. I could see how all the teachers wanted to help the children to understand better and realise their potential. From the start we

were asked what we could contribute to help the children in the organisation.

I was also able to observe a consistent hierarchy and flawless communication among the people working in the NGO. As soon we faced any problem, we informed our supervisor and the problem got resolved as quickly as possible. There were no conflicts and confusion.

All the children that are connected through Samvedana are so eager to learn. Whenever I was teaching them, I was always surprised at their curiosity and willingness to learn; all the students were so participative in the class, most of them kept their camera turned on and actively participated in the classroom; they had a very new perspective to learning new things

which inspired me to give my best and tech enthusiastically. All of them are so full of talent and energy and I hope they continue to get opportunities to pursue their dreams.

Lastly, I was also noticed the regular involvement of the founder of the NGO Mrs. Janki Vasant. She had a meet with all he interns as soon as we started our internship and she

remained thoroughly involved through our WhatsApp group. She was also kind enough to join the last day of our workshop. She was very encouraging throughout and I am thankful to have gotten the chance to learn under her guidance.

MAINTENANCE OF JOURNAL

Organisation and Employee-image The NGO has a very positive and impactful image. All the people involved are incredibly helpful to work with. But because of the online medium my perspective is limited only to the

workings online. But the organisation seems to have a very hopeful image. All the employees have been a meaningful guidance. The supervisors checked the progress regularly and gave constructive feedback. Further they also helped me whenever I got stuck with the work or did not understand the task given to me. We had regular meeting to discuss our progress

throughput the internship course.

Employee satisfaction

The more we give, the happier we feel. Volunteering increases self-confidence. You are

doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplishment.

Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. Volunteering keeps

you in regular contact with others and helps you develop a solid support system, which in

turn protects you against depression.

Effectiveness of instruments for motivating employees

Appreciation, feedback, and improvement

These were effective tool that our NGO have taken to motivate employees.

Because they know- More than anything, the biggest motivating factor for employees are

words of affirmation. Showing recognition of work, encouragement and giving employees

opportunities to improve will often reap the biggest productivity benefits. Lack of

appreciation is the number one reason people leave jobs and appreciation is the number one

thing people say causes them to do great work. Showing this appreciation thoughtfully and

consistently is the best way to motivate your employees to commit to their jobs and create a

more positive workplace.

Work Culture We were asked to volunteer as teachers and help the students of Eklavya Pathshala. The

school was held online so I was able to observe the workings of a school online. We used to also assist in arranging the breakout rooms for the classes. All the teachers were very cooperative and helped with any doubts. The work culture is ethical and organised.

Sources of Conflict There can be some sources of conflicts such as-

• We arranged our workshop, but some students were not able to attend because of their busy schedule.

• A little language barrier as the NGO is based in Gujarat and the language used for

communication was mostly Gujarati which was not known by the interns.

• Because of network issues sometimes students were unable to attend the regular school classes.

• As the classes were held online, teaching was a bit restricted.

Issues for future competition As Samvedana trust is well established Ngo I don’t this these any issues or any danger of

competition. But however, if Absence of networking happens in the organisation that can be the issue for the future.

Discussible vs. Non-discussible issues

At times, many bright ideas can come to place but it can also cause confusions and stray you

away from the initial goal. Although many good ideas come, sometimes, they don’t always

remain in line with the goals set out.

Solution: Although some organizations may already be experienced and their employees are

familiar with their operations, coaching and training every now and then can still be helpful.

In every situation, employees and volunteers will inevitably pick something up and be able to

apply it for further development of the organization.

Early warning signals In this organisation I feel there is only one issue which is lack of communication.

The organisation has to learn how to communicate their work properly. My argument is that they are the best people to communicate. If you believe in something so passionately, then you are the best person to communicate it. The snag is that they are passionate about the

cause but not about communicating it. So, you are left with India having some fantastic people who do great and diverse work but who haven’t understood that their job is not only the cause but to communicate the cause. They must inform society.

3. Observation Driven by sole passion for development of children, the NGO is constantly striving to fulfill our purpose of sensitizing the society and transforming lives. Samvedana has merely been an initiator. It considers that the relentless support of our team of volunteers, corporates,

professionals which has collectively worked towards bringing about the difference.

Today the world that we live in is highly dynamic, going through radical changes. At Samvedana they are constantly striving to understand the changing needs of our community and adapt to those needs. The organisation strongly believes that by transforming the lives of

the underprivileged, our nation will attain holistic development.

4. Conclusion I clearly remember Grusha Mam, the Coordination and Communications Executive asking all of us (volunteers of Nirma) ‘What are you expecting to learn from this internship’ I answered her to be more empathetic towards others.

Today, after interning one month in this organisation I can confidently say my expectations

are more than fulfilled and the experience was invaluable.

The journey at Samvedana had been a mixed basket. There were times when I got appreciated for the work done, and some where I got a good learning experience from the mistakes. The tasks allotted were really engaging and full of learning. I had received the duty of

volunteering for teaching the Pathshala students. The subjects were Sanskrit, English and Maths that I taught. I also had the chance to conduct a six-day PARIVARTAN workshop with all the interns. The things I learnt from Ngo included the pleasure and gratitude to assist the students with teaching and sharing my minimal knowledge. I also learned that even your

small actions impact people around you. So, I will always strive to be better. I also was able to know how the Ngo managed and administered the educational matters. Through the workshop I observed that the students were so eager to learn and participate. The Internship experience had been smooth. Given the fact that it was all online, but the learnings gained

were not hampered. Besides throughout the Internship, Ms. Grusha and Mrs. Surekha had been great motivating source. They guided whenever the task was a bit tricky. There was no stone left unturned to sharpen the existing skills and discover the latent qualities within. The workshop gave a lot of exposure to Teamwork and organizing a full- fledged event.

Ultimately, I'm glad to tell that my journey in Samvedana Trust was very much helpful and resourceful and I wish that I will be provided an opportunity to serve at the NGO once again!

Part C: Learnings

1. Impact of Covid-19 pandemic on the industry/organization

The impact of the global pandemic on Samvedana Trust did not stop the Ngo’s conquest to

change the society and bring a positive impact on the lives of the underprivileged children,

women and people in general.

Furthermore, there were a ton of problems that came in the way when it came to covid

management because of the unpreparedness for the pandemic. This drastically suggest that

there were financial problems, technology- related problems, and many more.

However, because of covid-19 all the work became online and all the employees and volunteers

that were and/or are working with the organization made all the efforts that they could to

provide some sort of relief to the people at the Ngo.

o Online teaching/ classes:

The organization shifted to online methods of teaching under the Vasant Pathshala

program which provides quality education to students from class 1 to class 7 th. In

addition to this, all the volunteers form Institute of Management, Nirma University

were asked to take up subjects for different classes and contribute through online

means.

In addition to this, online classes included activity periods in order to work on the

creative side of the students of Vasant Pathshala.

o Covid- 19 relief kits:

During the first of week of the internship, the founder of Samvedana Trust, Ahmedabad,

Ms. Janki Vasant discussed about making google forms and conducting surveys in order

to get the information of the families that have lost their bread winners to covid -19.

Moreover, these families were then provided certain facilitates in terms of kits

(sanitisation kits, grocery kits, etc.)

o Online workshops:

Samvedana encourages volunteers to conduct workshops so as to be able to enhance

the skills of the students and make a positive impact on their lives.

Furthermore, there was a six-day workshop that was conducted by all the interns from

Nirma University which was based on personality development and communication

enhancement.

o Village Visits:

The team of Samvedana Trust (along with the founder Ms. Janki Vasant) visited several

villages in and/ or Ahmedabad for several causes like spreading awareness about the

much anticipated third wave of covid- 19, cleanliness and hygiene, distributing grocery,

medicine, etc. kits.

These village visits were conducted spread the importance of education as well. The

team made sure to include the children in those regions in their Vasant Pathshala

program which makes sure to teach children from class 1 to class 7.

2. Application of concepts, tools, techniques and skills learnt at the

Institute.

o Teaching Skills: Under the Vasant Pathshala program, all four interns were the task to

take at least one subject to teach students for about a month. And teaching students, at

first, seemed like an easy and do-able task, but turned out to be an enriching experience.

In addition to this, it was a learning experience to teach kids as they taught me life

lessons. For instance, a child’s imagination his boundless and can unlock doors adults

never knew existed at the first place!

o Evaluating through feedback forms and/ or surveys: Samvedana Ngo evaluates the

impact it is making at a weekly or daily basis. While we were conducting the workshop,

feedback form for everyday was made in order to evaluate our performances.

Furthermore, for an organisation it is always adds a lot of credibility when they evaluate

their performances (be it for an event or in general).

3. Mention new knowledge, tools, techniques or skills that you

may have picked up.

✓ Building a selfless attitude: Volunteering in this organization has given me a new

perspective on life. The selfless demeanour of the people I've worked with taught

me to be compassionate and selfless. In addition, volunteering at this NGO taught

me to be realistic. Life lessons in personal development that I will never forget the

impact my work had on the lives of the people in the NGO and on society in general.

✓ Designing skills: There were several instances (for example making posters,

making invite video edits, etc.) helped develop my graphic designing skills. To

market our six-day workshop under the Eklavya program, it was essential that we

make posters and videos that attract the maximum audience. Furthermore,

designing eye catching posters and videos, made the students aware about the

workshop and what they could expect from it.

✓ Interactive Skills- Working in a team demands you to talk with different types of

people with varied natures and behaviours. Dealing with everyone with humbleness

and not losing your temper is a quality which can only be learned by spending time

with people who are working together. This develops great interactive skills which

could be fruitful in all walks of life.

✓ The Financial Understanding- When you are entering this sector, you should

research and then decide upon the importance of income during this period.

Nevertheless, if you can manage with fewer earnings, the experience, and the

possible impact your work can create, should balance it.

✓ Leadership Skills –When you work with a team in an NGO, you are often given a

chance to lead a group of people. Managing a group might sound easy but it's not.

There are decisions you need to take in everyone's favour, and which are right for

everyone.

4. Any augmentation of soft skills such as building interpersonal

relationships. During the six-day workshop I learned how important teamwork is, my skills in dealing with

people also improved during this task, the work in the workshop helped me to improve my

creative side as I was given the task of ppts, videos, posters, brochures, etc.

Moreover, I've learned to deal with people from different backgrounds while understanding the

conditions and situations they face during this difficult time of a global pandemic. During the

workshop I discovered an important skill; Negotiation. (Which seemed to play an important

role in event management.) During the workshop, I also realized the importance of having an

interactive session rather than a lecture, which helped me develop confidence and interact with

the students.

In addition to this, one learning that seemed to play a vital role in the management of the

workshop would have to be time management. While there were things that required multi-

tasking skills, dealing with the deadlines was one thing that contributed in the successful

completion of the six-day workshop.

Furthermore, while hosting and conducting the workshop, taking responsibility for a task was

crucial. This is an important factor in building character. Often taking responsibility helps in

building inter-personal relations with the team that one is given to work. In the long run, it is

always the team effort and the individual work and thus taking responsibility is essential.

5. Any directions for future learning or career path that you

may like to pursue. Being a volunteer at Samvedana Trust, Ahmedabad, I have the art of multitasking. The main

reason for this would have to be the fact that we were taking classes for elementary school

students under the Vasant pathshsala program and at the same time were planning, organizing,

conducting and hosting the six-day workshop on personality development and communication

enhancement under the Eklavya program.

Furthermore, these tasks helped me find my creative side which I believe I can work on to

enhance my designing skills. This could help in future in not just in designing but also in g the

fields of graphic art (since we had to design posters, create video invites, etc.)

Planning this workshop started with just making a to-do list and later, turned out to be was an

elaborate task. And as they say, there is always a lot of scope for creativity. It seemed a daunting

task, at first, to introduce intriguing activities for a personality development workshop. It is

essential to always have uniqueness as the main element of any event or workshop.

OVERALL OBSERVATIONS/LERANINGS

✓ The general observation throughout the week was that Covid-19 has drastically

changed paradigms and frameworks NGOs operate within. Covid-19 has taken a

severe toll on the capacities and sustainability of the NGO.

✓ Every little effort counts and these small of efforts will combine together and lead to

a bigger change in the society one day and we will be proud of ourselves one day that

we contributed to this change.

✓ Graphic designing- Tasks we did throughout the week included, poster designing,

analysing which helped in understanding how important marketing and graphic

designing is.

✓ Cultural Awareness NGOs do not see the caste or religion of the people for whom

they work. That ultimately means when you work with an NGO, you get to deal with

people from various social backgrounds, religions and cultures, which helps you learn

to adopt a new culture and working environment. Having great cultural knowledge

and adaptable skills makes you versatile for the future; thereafter, wherever or

whoever you work with, you know how to deal with different situations

✓ Makes You More Responsible Having workload and doing it, even after knowing

you won't get too much in return, develops a sense of responsibility. While going

through this, you keep acquiring the quality of completing tasks without looking for

profit in everything.

✓ Broadens Your Thinking When you work for your own self, your thinking

spectrum gets limited and never do you think beyond the enclosure of your life and

gains. But, working in an NGO forces you to think for people. This widens your

thinking spectrum so that in future when you work, you think of the group or on a

company level, which ultimately enhances your credibility and reputation.

✓ The Charm of Social Models- I personally have little faith in donations and have

always felt it should come with either volunteering or a helping hand in building

financially sustainable models. The organisation I work with falls on similar lines

and works towards educating and training groups of women to make them self -

sustainable.

✓ Making life better-Your work will be making a significant contribution towards a

better tomorrow. It will bring a sense of job satisfaction and self -motivation to do

more.
