Message from the Vice-Chancellor

Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur is a premiere Institution in North

India established in 1966 with more than 850 affiliated colleges and ten lakh enrolled

students in the current time. The University has excellent infrastructure and provides

quality education to the students in the new millennium. The University is fast

emerging as a major center for research and technology development. We have well

qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty to supervise the researchers in their

endeavor. The University is committed towards creating a favorable environment in

the campus as well as affiliated colleges.

I am very happy to announce the commencement of the PhD program in CSJM

University in the year 2021 in various domains of higher education. This program is for

a minimum 03-year duration including course work. The aim of the program is to

conduct high quality research in the interest of the students and the broader society.

The University has announced various scholarship schemes, such as Radhakrishnan

Scholarship, Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj Scholarship and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya

Scholarship for PhD students.

About the University

Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (formerly Kanpur University) Kanpur has

been, a premier institution with its motto “Aroh Tamso Jyoti” (Rise from darkness

to light.). The mission of the University is to be a teaching and research institution

with values of quality, quality and accessibility to promote intellectual and

knowledge-based advancement of society. It has a vision to make value

addition to human resources through teaching, research and innovation and to

become a quality-oriented institution along with fulfilling the need of educating a

The University is a State University of Uttar Pradesh and it is approved under section 12 F and 2 B of UGC Act since its inception. Since its beginning in 1966 the University has been universal in nature and has affiliated a large number of colleges in the districts of its jurisdiction namely, Kanpur, Fatehpur, Sitapur, Hardoi, Etawah, Aurraiya, Kannauj, Farrukhabad, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao and Lakhimpur.

Located in the biggest industrial metropolis of Uttar Pradesh, C.S.J.M. University stands out in higher education. Its sprawling campus of 265 acres is booming with academic activities. The residential campus offers both Postgraduate and Undergraduate programmes in vocational and professional education which are highly job oriented and will meet the requirements of new millennium. The departments and Institutes on campus include Business Management, Life Sciences, Bio Sciences and Bio Technology. health Sciences, Engineering and Technology, pharmacy, Journalism and Mass Communication, Library and Information Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, Physical Education, Social Work, Fine Arts and Music.

The C.S.J.M. University, Kanpur has a state-of-the-art Computer Centre and Central Library. The Computer Centre is well equipped with computing resources and caters to the academic needs of the university. The faculty and students in the University campus have free access to the computer centre and use internet facility available therein. Relentless determination, planning and investment to unite traditional library facilities with evolving electronic resources have resulted in the excellent and widely praised Ganesh Shanker Vidyarthi Central Library and E-learning environment at Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur. The library is well stocked with a variety of books on management, engineering and technology, humanities and social sciences, economics, commerce and basic sciences, Hindi and English. A wide range of periodicals, journals and magazines are subscribed in the library. The library has an inventory of more than 100000 books and access licences to as many as 5000 electronic journals.

The University has become an educational centre where students of various religious and cultural backgrounds study and work together in a congenial atmosphere. The

University is geared to provide maximum scholastic benefit to each individual student. About the Ph.D. Programme

CSJM University is offering admission to Ph.D. programme 2021-22 in various

disciplines as per UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D.

Degrees) Regulations 2016 and CSJMU Ph.D. ordinance.

Ph.D. programme shall be for a minimum duration of three years, including course

work and a maximum of six years. This would be called as the Residency period of the

Research Scholar. Research Scholar must put regular attendance in the department

concerned after the completion of the course work.

No candidate would be exempted from the continuous Residency period. Vice-

Chancellor, on the recommendation of the Supervisor may grant permission to

candidate to reside outside for purpose of collection of research material for his/her

thesis or doing experimental research work for a total period of not more than one

year provided further that such exemption shall not be granted in the first six months

after course work.

In case, a candidate fails to submit his/her thesis within Six years, from date of

his/her registration, as mentioned in ordinance, he/she shall cease to be a bonafide

student of the University and shall not be entitled to the rights and facilities

extended to a regular student and his/her registration shall stand cancelled

automatically.

However, in exceptional circumstances the extension of maximum one year may be

granted by the Academic Council only if i) RDC of the candidate is satisfactory, ii)

Genuine Medical grounds.

The women candidates and Persons with Disability (more than 40% disability) may be

allowed a relaxation of two years in maximum duration on his/her request and

permission granted by Vice-Chancellor before the expiry of Six Years. In addition, the

women candidates may be provided Maternity Leave/Child Care Leave once in the

entire duration of Ph.D. for up to 240 days.

University Scholarships

Radhakrishnan ScholarshipRadhakrishnan scholarship of Rs. 5000/-per month would be provided to

top fifty PhD students who would be joining University Campus. In addition, top fifty scholarships would be provided for scholars joining affiliated colleges. The fund is proposed for top three students per

department/institute where number of Ph.D. enrolled regular candidates

is eight or more. For top two students per department/institute where

number of Ph.D. enrolled regular candidates is five or more.

► CSJM University will provide Radhakrishnan scholarships to top three

bright young men and women for training in methods of research

under the expert guidance of faculty members working in research

centers approved by CSJM University in various fields. This

programme is aimed at Human Resource Development.

► Full CSJM University Radhakrishnan scholarships are tenable in only

the University campus.

► For PhD scholars who choose their research center as

colleges/Institutes affiliated to CSJM University, University will

provide partial Radhakrishnan scholarship funding of 40% provided

60% funding is made available by the college/institute. The funds

from college/Institute shall be received by the University which will

then transfer entire Radhakrishnan scholarship fund to the PhD

scholar during the entire tenure of the Radhakrishnan scholarship.

► The award of CSJM University Radhakrishnan scholarship is for fixed

tenure of three years or PhD submission whichever is earlier and

does not imply any assurance or guarantee for subsequent

employment by CSJM University to the beneficiary. The authority to

award / terminate vests with CSJMU. The awardee shall not lay claim

to permanent absorption in CSJM University, after the expiry of

Radhakrishnan scholarship.

► SUBJECT OF RESEARCH

Preference is given to a subject / topic of research relevant to the

nationally important areas.

CSJM University Research

Radhakrishnan Scholarship

CSJM University research Radhakrishnan scholarship would be awarded to

students enrolled in Ph.D program with at least 55% marks for General &

OBC (50% for SC/ST candidates, Physically and Visually handicapped

candidates) after qualifying the CSJMU-ET conducted by CSJM University.

Candidates will be eligible for Radhakrishnan scholarship only after getting

registered/enrolled for Ph.D within the validity period of one year after

entrance examination.

► APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Applications for Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University -

Entrance Test (CSJMU-ET) are invited through press

advertisement. The information with respect to inviting

applications is also made available on the website

(www.kanpuruniversity.org).

► AGE LIMIT

The upper age limit for applying for the award of Radhakrishnan

scholarship shall be 28 years, which is relaxed up to 5 years in the

case of candidates belonging to Schedule Castes/Schedule

Tribes/OBC, Physically Handicapped/Visually Handicapped and

female applicants.

Scholarship

On the occasion of birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj, the

university announces to provide scholarship of Rs.10,000/per month to a

Ph.D. scholar who would work on various facets of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji

Maharaj also known as Rajarshi Shahu the able ruler and great leader for

conducting research on his early life, which later under influence of social

reformer, Jyotiba Phule, he took many progressive steps for the cause of

lower caste, education for all irrespective of the caste. Chhatrapati Shahu

Ji Maharaj University formerly Kanpur University was named after the

Maharaja of the Indian princely state of Kolhapur.

CSJM University will provide Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj (CSJM) scholarship to the scholar working in research center approved by CSJM

University.

Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Scholarship

The university announces to provide scholarship of Rs.10,000/per month

to a Ph.D. scholar who would work on various facets of Pandit Deen

Dayal Upadhyaya. CSJM University will provide Deen Dayal Upadhyaya

(DDU) scholarship to the scholar working in research center approved by

CSJM University.

marks, and in case of discrepancy under-graduation marks would be the

deciding factor.

SUBJECT OF RESEARCH

Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaja’s life, his kingdom and influence of social

reformer Jyotiba Phule, Upliftment of economically weaker section, his

efforts for Development, Education, Socialism, Philosophy, History, Social

Work, his passion for upliftment of weaker and lower section of the

society and other similar areas (in the Social Sciences) as approved by

CSJM University.

Deen Dayal Upadhyaya’s contribution for the country, decolonization of

the Indian political thoughts and upliftment of villagers. His believes

made him develop an indigenous economic model for human beings at a

center stage of the country. Research along his line of work and other

similar areas (in the Social Sciences) as approved by CSJM University.

CSJM & DDU Scholarship

CSJM & DDU scholarship would be awarded to student enrolled in Ph.D

program with at least 55% marks for General & OBC (50% for SC/ST

Subject to the condition stipulated in UGC Regulations-2016, the

following persons are eligible to seek admission to the PhD Program:

• The candidates should have Master's degree or a professional degree

(M.Tech./LL.M./M.D./M.S. degree) in the subjects, declared

equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory

regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate (or its

equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7- point scale or an equivalent grade

in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent

degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an

Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized

or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a

law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that

country for the purpose or assessing, accrediting or assuring quality

and standards of educational institutions.

• A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent

relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to

SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled candidates.

• The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale

wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to

the category mentioned above are permissible based only on the

qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.

i. Provided further that an M.A. or M.Sc. in Mathematics may be

permitted to work for Ph.D. degree in Statistics in the Faculty of

Science.

iii. Research on living authors is not permissible. Research on living

authors is not permissible.

•Students appearing for final year or final semester of their post-

graduate degree examination will also be eligible to appear for the

admission process subject to the fulfilment of minimum eligibility

criteria in the final result thereof.

In the faculty of Medical Biochemistry, a candidate holding post-graduate degree in the concerned or allied subjects or equivalent degree of another University recognized by this University/having a post graduate degree with at least 60% (55% for SC/ST/ Differently-abled candidates) marks shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme.

ii.

Admission Process

The University shall admit Ph.D. students through an entrance test named as "Chhatrapati

Shahu Ji Maharaj University Entrance Test (CSJMU-ET)” for Ph.D. admission.

Subject to the provisions contained in clause (8) of section 7 of the Uttar Pradesh State

Universities Act, 1973, CSJMU-ET shall be conducted in specified subjects/disciplines by

the University.

The admission shall be based on the criteria notified by the University, keeping in view

the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the UGC and other statutory bodies

concerned and taking into account the reservation policy of the State Government of

Uttar Pradesh from time to time into different Vertical and Horizontal-categories viz.

unreserved, reserved for OBC/SC/ST/Differently-Abled/EWS and so classified for each

Department/Subject.

The admission shall be based on the criteria with 70% weightage to the Entrance test and

30% weightage to the performance in the interview/viva-voce and other statutory bodies

concerned and taking into account the reservation policy of the State Government of

Uttar Pradesh into different Vertical and Horizontal-categories viz. unreserved, reserved

for OBC/SC/ST/Differently-Abled/EWS and so classified for each Department/Subject.

Guidelines for conducting written examination for persons with disabilities will be

followed as defined in Rights of persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPwD Act, 2106) which

came into force from 19-04-2017.

Exemptions from the Entrance Test

The following categories of candidates shall be exempted from the Entrance Test for

admission to Ph.D. programme:

• International students (including NRIs) which shall be subject to the general rules

framed by the Government of India from time to time and as applicable to the

University with regard to the admission, fees etc.

• Candidates who have secured grants for research such as

fellowship/scholarship/associateship etc. from UGC(JRF)/ CSIR(JRF) / GATE-

MHRD Scholarship / Teacher Fellowship / DBT/ ICMR/ICAR/DST-INSPIRE

fellowship, DST-WoS or equivalent national level fellowship (as identified by RDC).

• Serving Army, Navy and Air-force Officers of at least Colonel or equivalent rank

with not less than 15 years of service applying for Ph.D. degree in Defence and

Strategic Studies.

No Exemption from Entrance Test, (with

Weightage given) Permanent Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors having

appointment on regular posts in the teaching departments of the University or a

government college / government aided college affiliated / associated to the University

who have completed their probation successfully would be required to appear in the

entrance examination. Weightage of 10% would be given for these candidates.

Full time teachers of the self-financed courses run by the University/affiliated colleges

on long term contract with at least three years of teaching experience in the university/

college would be required to appear in the entrance examination. Weightage of 10%

would be given for these candidates.

GATE, NET, SLET qualified candidates would be required to appear in the

entrance examination. Weightage of 10% would be given for these candidates.

Note: In case, number of candidates passing JRF are more than the number of vacancies

in a particular subject, their marks in post-Graduation will also be taken into account to

decide the merit for their admission in Ph.D. programme. The categories for the

candidate exempted from Entrance Test will be given preference over the candidates

qualifying through Entrance Test.

University shall admit candidates by a two-stage process through:

i. Qualifying the Entrance Test (Annexure-I) which will contain 100 multiple-choice

objective-type questions of 4 marks each (maximum 400 marks) and shall consist of

50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific of two hours’

duration for assessing subject expertise, and subject proficiency and subject

knowledge.

ii. There shall be negative marking. On each wrong answer, 1 mark will bededucted.

iii. The entrance result shall be prepared by estimating the percentile of marks

obtained in entrance test. Percentile score will be used for preparation of the

entrance merit list.

The Entrance Test shall be conducted ordinarily in the University campus but in

special circumstances, it may be conducted in Government Degree Colleges/

Government aided degree colleges. The Entrance test centre(s) shall be notified in

advance (changes of centres, if any, will also be notified well in advance) to the

applicants.

Top 50 percentile of each subject will be called for the interview. Final merit would

be prepared based on total marks of the interview and entrance test score for each

subject along with weightage wherever applicable. Final result would be declared as

percentile for each subject.

Weightage of 5% marks shall be allowed for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC

(Non-Creamy layers)/ Differently-abled category in the entrance examination

conducted by the University.

University reserves the right to conduct the entrance or interview as required. In case of less number of applicants against seats advertised in any discipline, University may conduct direct interviews.

The shortlisted candidates shall appear for interview and presentation before a

Selection Committee constituted for respective fields on the date(s) announced

through the website of the University.

iv. Based on the final merit list, Subject wise/Category wise merit lists will be prepared.

The qualified applicants, in order of merit in each subject would be called for Course

Work as per the available number of vacant Ph.D. seats. This eligibility pertains to

the level of being called for the Course Work only and may not guarantee admission

to Ph.D. programme.

University shall grant Registration/Admission to the candidate after online/offline

presentation for Ph.D. programme on the recommendation of Research Degree

Committee (RDC) and its approval by the Vice-Chancellor.

PhD Registration

The Research Degree Committee (RDC) shall arrange for an interview/viva-voce which

shall include Presentations on the research interest/area.

University shall grant Registration/Admission to candidate for Ph.D. programme on the

recommendation of Research Degree Committee (RDC) and its approval by the Vice-

Chancellor.

The candidate would be required to submit the fee for Ph.D. work

(registration/continuation of the registration fee) every year or part thereof.

Note: Any dispute arising out of the present notification shall be subject to the

jurisdiction of the court situated at Kanpur.

General Guidelines for filling up the application

form

i. The Ph.D. Application form has to be filled Online for admission to the Ph.D. Program.

ii. The Online Application form will be filled by candidates required to appear for the

Entrance Test as well as candidates exempted from the Entrance Test for admission

to Ph.D. programme.

iii. Before applying online, candidates are required to keep ready the following

documents in JPEG format for uploading as per the prescribed size:

► Soft copy of colour photograph

► Soft copy of signature

► Category Certificate (if applicable)

► 10th & 12th level Mark sheets► UG Mark sheet and Degree Certificate

► PG Mark sheet and Degree Certificate

► Mark sheet of previous semester(s) for candidates appearing in the qualifying

degree exam

► UGC(NET-JRF)/ CSIR(NET-JRF)/ GATE-MHRD Scholarship/ Teacher

Fellowship/DBT/ICMR/ICAR/DST-INSPIRE/SLET score card/ award letter

► Certificate regarding physical limitation for PwD and letter of undertreating for

using own-scribe (if applicable) available on the website

iv. A Model Application Form is available for making accurate entries in the online

Application form.

v. Fill in the Application Form only if you are satisfied about your eligibility for

admission to the program. However, mere fulfilment of eligibility criteria does

not give guarantee for admission to the Ph.D. programme.

vi. University shall not be liable for the correctness and authenticity of the

information/ documents provided in the online application.

vii. The University has the right to cancel, at any stage, the admission for the

candidate who is found admitted to a course to which he/she is not entitled,

being ineligible in accordance with the statues and regulations in force or it is

found that the documents submitted by the candidate are not genuine.

Merely submission of an application form, does not constitute a claim for a seat

or admission to the Ph.D. program. All admissions are provisional. University

reserves the right to cancel any admission at any stage.

x. Candidates are advised to check University website for any

updates. In case of any matter relating to the Ph.D. Admissions, the decision of

the Vice Chancellor/Admission Committee, CSJM University shall be final and

binding.

xi. All the legal matters pertaining to the Ph.D. Admissions shall be subject to the

Kanpur Jurisdiction only.
