NEW DELHI (AP) - Indians voted Sunday in the next-to-last round of a six-week-long national election marked by a highly acri-monious campaign that has seen Prime Minister Narendra Modi blame opposition party chief Rahul Gandhirsquos family for thecountryrsquos ills

Sundayrsquos voting in 59 constitu-encies including seven in New Delhi the capital completed poll-ing for 483 of 543 seats in the powerful lower house of Parlia-ment The voting for the remain-ing 60 seats will be held on May 19 and vote counting begins four days later India has 900 million eligible voters

Turnout in the sixth phase of voting on Sunday was 633 ac-cording to the Election Commis-sion There was a drop in people coming out to vote on a hot day with the temperature soaring to 39 degrees Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) in northern India The turnout in the fi rst fi ve phases averaged 67 nearly the same as in 2014 elections that brought Modi to power

Gandhi who is president of the Congress party cast his ballot Sunday in the capital where he is registered as a voter Gandhi however is contesting from two constituencies - family bastion Amethi in the north and Wayanad in the south - to project an all-In-dia image He will have to give up one seat if he wins in both places

Saying it has been a good fi ght against Modirsquos Bharatiya Janata Party Gandhi told report-ers ldquoPrime Minister Narendra Modi used hatred we used love It seems that love is going to winrdquo

Gandhirsquos mother Sonia Gan-dhi a former Congress party president and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra a party general

secretary also cast their votes in the capital

The voting was largely peace-ful but for stray incidents of vio-lence in West Bengal state where Modirsquos BJP is trying to wrest seats from Trinamool Congress a powerful regional party that is currently governing the state

Dilip Ghosh a BJP leader told reporters that a party candidate Bharati Ghosh was prevented by rival groups from entering a vot-ing station in the Keshpur area near Kolkata the capital of West Bengal She took refuge in a tem-ple and later in a police station

The Press Trust of India news agency said some people threw crude bombs and rocks at her motorcade when she tried to visit another polling station in the re-gion One of her security guards was injured and one vehicle was damaged Security forces dispersed the attackers using wooden sticks PTI said

Opinion polls say that Modirsquos BJP continues to be the front-runner in the election but that it is likely to return with a lesser

total of 282 seats The BJP cap-tured 31 of the votes in 2014 but it won more than half the seats to wrest power from the Congress party in a fi rst-past-the-post elec-toral system in which a candidate who receives the most votes wins

Modi is running his campaign like a presidential race a referen-dum on his fi ve years of rule with claims of helping the poorest with doles free health care providing toilets in their homes and helping women get free or cheap cooking gas cylinders

At the same time he is bank-ing on stirring Hindu nationalism by accusing the Congress party of being soft on archrival Paki-stan and terrorism pandering to minority Muslims for votes and pampering Kashmiri separatists

Opposition parties accuse Modi of digressing from the main issues aff ecting nearly 70 of the popu-lation living in villages and small towns The opposition is chal-lenging him over Indiarsquos 61 unemployment rate - the highest in decades - and the economic dif-fi culties of farmers hurt by low

crop prices that led many to take their own lives Opposition of-fi cials have also alleged corrup-tion in a deal for India to purchase French fi ghter jets

ldquoModi personally has been the most visible prime ministerrdquo said Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay a political commentator and biog-rapher of Modi But he added ldquoThere could be an element of fatigue also People at the end of it are looking at their bottom line I think the issues of employ-ment and rural distress are veryimportantrdquo

Throughout the campaign Modi has projected himself as a ldquochowkidarrdquo or watchman guarding the countryrsquos interests

Gandhi the 48-year-old scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family has accused Modi of buying 36 French Rafale fi ghter jets at an exorbitant price and helping a private indus-trialist by promoting him as an off -set partner of Dassault the aircraft manufacturer

Ex-officer sentenced to 25 years in black motoristrsquos killing

WEST PALM BEACH FL - A former South Florida police officer was sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing a stranded black motorist

Palm Beach County Judge Joseph Marx sentenced Nouman Raja to 25 years on each count of manslaughter and attempted first-degree murder Both sentences will run concurrently

Raja was convicted last month in the 2015 fatal shooting of Corey Jones who was stranded on the side of an Interstate 95 exit ramp in Palm Beach Gardens after his SUV had broken down

Defense attorneys argued during trial that Raja 41 shot Jones in self-defense Jones who had a concealed weapons permit pulled a gun

Prosecutors claimed Raja instigated the confrontation because he was working un-dercover and never identified himself as a police officer leading Jones 31 to believe that Raja was a robber

A now-bearded Raja entered the court-room for Thursday afternoonrsquos sentencing

hearing wearing a jail uniform He kept his head down most of the time tearing up during his wifersquos testimony

Marx denied a motion for a new trial last week Rajarsquos attorneys argued the ldquocourt erred in the decision of matters of law aris-ing before and during the course of the tri-alrdquo and ldquoerroneously instructed the jury on matters of law and refused to give a proper instruction requested by the defendantrdquo

Raja who was fired by the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department shortly after the shooting received a lesser sentence than what the state and Jonesrsquo family were seeking

In a letter written on behalf of Jonesrsquo family his uncle asked Marx to sentence Raja to life

ldquoHe hunted down an innocent man and killed himrdquo Marc Johnson wrote reading the letter aloud in court ldquoHe ruined the

lives of Corey Jonesrsquo family as well as his own And still he shows not an ounce of remorserdquo

Johnson went on to say that Raja ldquoshould not have the opportunity for parolerdquo and should ldquospend the rest of his life trying to atone for his wrongdoingrdquo

ldquoAt least he will have the opportunity to apologize to his wife and children for deceiving themrdquo Johnson wrote ldquoAt least he will have the opportunity to simply wake up everyday Corey Jones will never have the opportunity to do anything ever againrdquo

Marx also heard testimony from Jonesrsquo father niece and aunt

Clinton Jones said he still keeps his sonrsquos cellphone number in his phone for therapy

Corey Jonesrsquo aunt Sheila Banks noted that Raja hasnrsquot expressed any remorse for the shooting instead asking for leniency during his house arrest while awaiting trial and filing appeals

Rajarsquos wife brother and best friend testified on his behalf

Adnan Raja a deputy with the Palm Beach County Sheriffrsquos Office told Marx he believes the issue of race was the moti-vating factor for the state to prosecute his younger brother

ldquoBut I just donrsquot feel this is rightrdquo he said ldquoItrsquos politically motivatedrdquo

Adnan Raja pointed out how his brother was a good police officer a proud Ameri-can Muslim and a scapegoat for a racial storyline

ldquoToday hersquos being labeled a murdered and a racistrdquo he said ldquoI just donrsquot feel right about itrdquo

Indian man sentenced to life for sexually exploiting minorORLANDO FL - US District Judge

Carlos E Mendoza has sentenced Deepak Deshpande (41 Dublin California) to life in federal prison for enticing a minor to engage in sexual conduct and 30 yearsrsquo imprisonment for production of child por-nography Deshpande had pleaded guilty on October 29 2018

According to court documents and evidence presented during the sentencing hearing in July 2017 Deshpande contact-ed a minor in Orlando through an online chat application At that time Deshpande posed as a modeling agent and persuaded the minor to send him nude images of her-self In the months that followed Desh-

pande contacted the same minor posing as two other individuals and threatened to disseminate her nude images if she did not continue producing additional child pornography for him

In September 2017 Deshpande trav-eled to Orlando from California to meet the minor in person for the first time He brought her to a local hotel and filmed himself sexually assaulting the victim multiple times Between September 2017 and April 2018 he repeated this same conduct during four additional visits to Orlando

In early May 2018 following an anon-ymous tip the FBI began investigating

Deshpande An undercover FBI agent then began posing as the minor in com-munications with Deshpande On May 12 2018 as a result of the undercover investigation Deshpande returned to Or-lando and was arrested upon his arrival at the Orlando International Airport

Following his arrest Deshpande plotted to kidnap and murder the minor victim in advance of his trial Deshpande recruited a fellow inmate whom he believed would soon be released to serve as a middle-man Upon learning of the plot the FBI conducted an undercover investigation and Deshpandersquos efforts were ultimately unsuccessful

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Thursday pro-posed overhauling the US im-migration system to favor young educated English-speaking ap-plicants instead of people with family ties to Americans a plan he will push in his 2020 re-elec-tion campaign but has little to no chance of being approved inCongress

Trumprsquos plan roundly panned by Democrats and immigration advocacy groups is aimed at try-ing to unite Republicans - some who want to boost immigration others who want to restrict it - ahead of next yearrsquos presidential and congressional elections

ldquoIf for some reason possibly political we canrsquot get the Demo-crats to approve this merit-based high-security plan then we will get it approved immediately after the election when we take back the House (of Representatives) keep the Senate and of course hold the presidencyrdquo Trump said in a Rose Garden address to Re-publican lawmakers and Cabinet members

Currently about two-thirds of the 11 million people allowed

to emigrate to the United States each year are given green cards granting permanent residencybecause of family ties

Trump proposed keeping the overall numbers steady but shift-ing to a ldquomerit-basedrdquo system similar to one used in Canada - a plan he said would result in 57 of green cards being based on employment and skills

He would also end a lottery system used to give applicants from countries with low immi-gration rates a chance to move to the United States

ldquoCompanies are moving offi c-es to other countries because our immigration rules prevent them from retaining highly skilled and even if I might totally brilliant peoplerdquo Trump said

The plan left aside the thorny issues of how to deal with the roughly 11 million immigrants living in the country illegally - many for years - and protec-tions for ldquoDreamersrdquo brought to the country illegally as children a top priority for Democraticlawmakers

It also does not include chang-es sought by business lobby groups to help farmers and other seasonal employers obtain more guest workers or reforms for

Trump to propose plan to make US immigration more merit-basedtechnology visa programs

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Trumprsquos plan was ldquodead on arrivalrdquo and said it was ldquonot a remotely seriousproposalrdquo

The plan also drew concerns from hard-line groups that want to restrict immigration ldquoThe fact that it does not even call for a modest reduction in total immigration but instead off -sets decreases with increases in lsquoskills-basedrsquo immigration is very concerningrdquo said Mark Krikorian head of the Center for Immigration Studies

BEEFING UP BORDERTrump ran for offi ce in 2016

pledging to build a wall on the southern US border with Mex-ico to keep migrants out and has fought Congress to get funding for it

Trumprsquos plan includes pro-posals to beef up security at the border to try to prevent people from crossing illegally and legal changes aimed at curbing a rise in Central American migrantsseeking asylum

It would also hike fees charged at the border to pay for improved infrastructure

But the plan fell short of being

the ldquocomprehensiverdquo approach that business religious and im-migration lobby groups alike have said is needed to get a deal that would get enough votes from Democrats and Republicans to clear Congress

Democratic support would be needed to advance any leg-islation through the Republi-can-led Senate - let alone the Democratic-controlled House - making it unlikely that Trumprsquos plan will move forward ahead of

November 2020 electionsldquoTo say itrsquos dead on arrival

Kantar owned by advertising giant WPP did not respond to re-quests for comment

Hathi told Reuters the NARSS questionnaire contained lead-ing queries about toilet usage that may have influenced re-spondents and the government ignored suggestions aimed at fixing queries

COLOMBO - A Sri Lankan software engineer suspected by authorities in Sri Lanka of having provided technical and logistical support to the Easter Sunday sui-cide bombers was monitored by Indian intelligence agencies three years ago for links with Islamic State suspects investigators said

Four sources in Sri Lankan in-vestigating agencies said they be-lieved Aadhil Ameez a 24-year-old was the link between two groups that carried out the at-tacks on churches and hotels that killed more than 250 people and wounded hundreds more

Aadhil has been arrested and is in police custody the sources said His arrest has not been made public but when asked by Reuters Ruwan Gunasekera the main spokesman for the Sri Lankan police confirmed Aadhil was taken into custody on April 25 four days after the attacks

The spokesman declined to give more details

A police official at Indiarsquos National Investigation Agency (NIA) and another police official in Gujarat said they were pro-

viding assistance to Sri Lankan authorities

Aadhil who describes himself on his LinkedIn profile as a se-nior engineerprogrammerweb designer with a masters degree in computer science and a bachelors in political science from UK universities could not be reached for comment

He does not yet have a law-yer and under Sri Lankarsquos tough new emergency laws imposed after the attacks he can be held indefinitely

His father M Ameez who lives in Aluthgama a town south of Colombo denied that Aadhil was involved with the plotters and said such ldquoallegations are liesrdquo

The Indian investigators said they had been monitoring Aad-hil since 2016 and named him in two chargesheets filed in Indian courts against suspected Islamic State operatives as being one of their contacts

According to one of the chargesheets reviewed by Re-uters he showed up in Facebook WhatsApp and Telegram chats with two of the suspects who are on trial for plotting an attack on a synagogue in Ahmedabad

JAIPUR - In January Indiarsquos main opposition Congress party seemed poised for a strong fight back against Prime Minister Nar-endra Modi after victories in three heartland states late last year

But just over four months later even Congress officials admit the attempt to unseat Modi in the ongoing general election has suf-fered from a weak campaign and fumbled communications Po-litical strategists say the mis-steps and an inability to sew up allianc-es with other opposition groups

had hurt CongressVotes are to be counted on

May 23 and itrsquos still not clear if Modi will come back to power although many political analysts and pollsters have said he has the edge

Two Congress officials told Re-uters that their campaign centred around a promise of a handout of 72000 rupees ($1022) every year for Indiarsquos poorest families was rolled out late - only four days before the first phase of the polls began on April 11

In contrast the Modi cam-paignrsquos communications has

been a huge strength - no one can complain that the message didnrsquot get out

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dominated news-paper frontpages TV screens social media posts roadside bill-boards and rallies through the election backed by a war chest multiple times that controlled by Congress

On 11 Hindi TV news channels for example Modi has got nearly three times the air-time compared to Congress party chief Rahul Gandhi between March 30-April 26 according to Broadcast Audi-ence Research Council India data

Congress has also been unable to forge alliances with other op-position parties in two important states and adequately overhaul its grassroots organisation po-litical strategists said making an already difficult contest even harder

The campaign slip-up was part-ly because the partyrsquos detailed manifesto came out late followed by further delays in readying promotional materials the two Congress officials said Both re-quested anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media

ldquoThe backroom work to push

out the campaign hadnrsquot been donerdquo one of them said ldquoBasi-cally it was a big royal messrdquo

A Congress candidate in east-ern India said that his partyrsquos pub-licity campaign wasnrsquot even no-ticed by rank-and-file workers let alone voters On multiple trips to Uttar Pradesh which elects more lawmakers than any other state Reuters found that many voters did not know about Congressrsquos handout promise

DIFFICULT TO PREDICTElections in India are notori-

ously difficult to predict and growing farm distress and a lack of jobs could still hurt the BJP like it did last December when Congress wrested away three states from the ruling party

There are a whole series of regional and caste-based par-ties that could benefit from any such anti-Modi swing as much as Congress If that happens a co-alition of parties might form the next government with Congress a powerful force in that though not necessarily calling all the shots

HUGE LOSSESP Chidamabaram a top Con-

gress strategist and a former fi-nance minister acknowledged

that Modi had dominated the election so far but declined to comment on his partyrsquos delayed publicity campaign

ldquoI think if anybody has gained in this election campaign it is Mr Gandhi if anybody has lost ground in the election campaign it is Mr Modirdquo he told Reuters ldquoI think BJP will suffer huge lossesrdquo

Part of Congressrsquos confidence stems from states like western Rajasthan where it has set up good ground operations

On May 6 as India voted in the fifth phase of the election over 100 young men and women em-ployed by a private firm sat inside a basement in Rajasthanrsquos capital city of Jaipur making and receiv-ing calls on behalf of Congress

Most were calling party work-ers to check for any problems during polling and logging com-plaints which were being moni-tored and resolved by Congress officials there and at another location in Jaipur

MUMBAI - WhatsApp clones and software tools that cost as little as $14 are helping Indian digital marketers and political activists bypass anti-spam restric-tions set up by the worldrsquos most popular messaging app Reuters has found

The activities highlight the challenges WhatsApp which is owned by Facebook Inc faces in preventing abuse in India its biggest market with more than 200 million users

With fervent campaigning in Indiarsquos staggered general election which concludes on May 19 the demand for such tools has surged according to digital companies and sources in the ruling Bharati-ya Janata Party (BJP) and its main rival the Congress party

After false messages on What-sApp last year sparked mob lynchings in India the company restricted forwarding of a mes-sage to only five users The soft-ware tools appear to overcome those restrictions allowing users to reach thousands of people at once

the BJPrsquos IT head Amit Malviya did not respond to requests for comment

Rohitash Repswal who owns a digital marketing business in a cramped residential neighbour-hood of New Delhi said he ran a 1000 rupee ($14) piece of soft-ware round-the-clock in recent months to send up to 100000 WhatsApp messages a day for two BJP members

ldquoWhatever WhatsApp does therersquos a workaroundrdquo Repswal said during an interview at his small two-bedroom house

Two Congress sources and one BJP source told Reuters their workers used clone apps such as ldquoGBWhatsApprdquo and ldquoJTWhat-sApprdquo which allowed them to cut

through WhatsApprsquos restrictionsBoth apps have a green-colour

interface that closely resembles WhatsApp and can be download-ed for free from dozens of tech-nology blogs They are not avail-able on Googlersquos official app store but work on Android phones

WhatsApp describes such apps as ldquounofficialrdquo and says its users can face bans which means the company can block the account associated with a particular mo-bile number if it detects unusual activity Some Congress workers said they did not care

ldquoWhatsApp occasionally bans some of these numbers but the volunteers would use new (mo-bile) sim cards to sign uprdquo said a Congress member with direct knowledge of the activities

In Mumbai a person in the so-cial media team of a senior BJP candidate said no restrictions on JTWhatsApp meant his team could easily send forwards to up to 6000 people a day as well as video files containing political content which would be far bigger in size than allowed on the official WhatsApp service

NEW DELHI - Five days af-ter a suicide bomber killed 40 CRPF personnel in February in the Kashmir Valley playwright and director Abhishek Majum-dar was forced to cancel a play looking at the behaviour of Indi-an security forces in the disputed region

The play which was sched-uled to be staged on February 19 in Jaipur was stopped by police but if they hadnrsquot stepped in hardline Hindu activists had made it clear they would have physically forced it off the stage The activists said Majumdar was ldquoanti-nationalrdquo or unpatriotic

Hours before the show was due to start the crew said they were forced to escape the venue as a mob had gathered They said they ran down back alleys and had to take side roads to avoid being attacked on a main road

ldquoIt wasnrsquot that people didnrsquot like our play expressed their dismay and left No We were being hunted across the cityrdquo said Ashwath Bhatt an actor in the play

Several playwrights filmmak-ers musicians and comedians say their work has been censored or cancelled following pressure sometimes backed up by physi-cal threats from Hindu hard-line groups that have multiplied since Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014

Many of these artists say they fear that if Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are elected to a sec-ond term in the current general election it will lead to further restraints on freedom of expres-sion Most political strategists say they expect Modi to be in a

position to form the next gov-ernment when votes are counted on May 23

Reuters interviewed 21 actors playwrights musicians and co-medians for this story and found out that at least 15 of them have been subjected to questioning by event organizers or the authori-ties if their works explored con-tentious issues such as secular-ism and religious intolerance or ridiculed Modirsquos decisions

BJP leaders have dismissed allegations that the party is intolerant of dissent

In Jaipur Reuters spoke to three police officers who went to the venue and all three said they just didnrsquot feel the timing was right to show Majumdarrsquos play which deals with the men-tal state of civilians and security forces after years of unrest in Kashmir None of the three had read the script

ldquoWe were informed of pos-sible violence So to avoid any violence and any harm from happening we took actionrdquo said sub-inspector Mukesh Kumar

Majumdar said he had never met Soni ldquoWhat a liarrdquo the 38-year-old playwright said ldquoHe is part of a larger nexus

of the disease that the BJP has spread in our countryrdquo

Lalitha Kumaramangalam a BJP leader said the allegations by artists that the government and the ruling party were clamp-ing down on free speech were ldquoall in their mindrdquo

The number of verbal attacks on the BJP and its allies was il-lustrative of how much freedom the critics had she said Kuma-ramangalam compared it with Indiarsquos 21-month state of emer-gency in 1975-77 when then prime minister Indira Gandhi suspended civil liberties Hun-dreds of journalists artists and intellectuals were among those arrested at the time

ldquoThat was real censor-ship I donrsquot think anyone has come anywhere near that You wouldnrsquot even be talk-ing to me about it if there was real curtailment right nowrdquo Kumaramangalam said

Clearly the Hindu groups arenrsquot the only restraint on free-dom of expression in often ultra-conservative India Hardly a month goes by without a movie being challenged because a plot-line offends one religion ethnic group caste or another

But it is the intensity of the attacks on anything that chal-lenges the Modi government or the Indian militaryrsquos view of the world that is frightening artists And more direct involvement of

local police in deciding whether a performance can continue is adding to those concerns

ldquoThere is a kind of legiti-macy this government has pro-vided to violence It is okay to attack artists these days only because their work does not suit the narrative being peddled for electoral gainsrdquo said Majumdar

He declined to name his pre-ferred choice for prime minister but said that Mayawati a former chief minister of Indiarsquos most populous state of Uttar Pradesh in the north is among the candi-dates

He said that her being from a lower Hindu caste could work in her favour

ldquoWe are all together in good faith and will select amicably who will be the best PM choicerdquo he said

Some of the most popular films on OTT platforms at present are those that are set in schools or colleges These are usually light-hearted films dealing with love and other school based aspects Not just on streaming platforms even in cinemas this genre has never gone out of fashion and Hollywood regularly churns such films But when it comes to Bol-lywood one can hardly recall handful of such films The only memorable movies one can rec-ollect in the last 10-11 years are Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na [2008] 3 Idiots [2009] and Fukrey [2013] Student Of The Year 2 hence is an important film in this regard Its first part released in 2012 was a success and established three new actors ndash Varun Dhawan Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra Now Karan Johar has released Student Of The Year 2 and this time he casts two new girls ndash Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria ndash along with popular actor Tiger Shroff However itrsquos Punit Mal-hotra whorsquos wearing the direc-torrsquos cap for the sequel So does Student Of The Year 2 manage to entertain and be as good or better

than its predecessor Or does it fail to entice Letrsquos analyse

Student Of The Year 2 is the story of triumph love and mak-ing a comeback Rohan (Tiger Shroff) and Mridula (Tara Su-taria) study together in Pishori Chamanlal college Both are in love and there comes a time when Mridula changes her college and gets admission in the prestigious St Teresa College Rohan too wants to get admitted in this insti-tution but knowing that the fees there are too costly he abandons the plan He still tries his luck and seeks admission under the sports quota As luck would have it his admission is approved Rohan reaches there and realizes Mrid-ula has changed For starters she now calls herself Mia She also gets a bit detached with Rohan However in no time Rohan wins her heart and they both again become a couple Meanwhile Rohan is introduced to the Tere-sarsquos stud and star athlete Manav Mehra (Aditya Seal) They quick-ly become friends but Manavrsquos sister Shreya (Ananya Panday) detests him She always tries her best to put Rohan in a spot At the time of the dance competition of the college Rohan and Mia team up while Manav and Shreya jointly participate For both the girls winning the competition is very crucial Mia wants to attain popularity and she realizes that this dance competition will be a step in that direction Shreya meanwhile wants to escape the clutches of her tyrannical father Mr Randhawa (Chetan Pandit) and also her over-achiever broth-er Manav and enrol in a dance school in London During the competition Manav and Shreya win while Rohan and Mia get de-feated as Mia loses her grip Mia is devastated and when Rohan goes to console her he finds Mia and Manav cosying up to each other An angry Rohan punches Manav This action leads to Ro-hanrsquos expulsion from St Teresa Manav still cross over getting hit by Rohan gangs up and beats Ro-

han black and blue What happens next forms the rest of the film

Tiger Shroff is completely in his element and as always does a great job His screen presence is electri-fying and though he is perceived as a killing machine itrsquos still be-lievable when hersquos the one getting bashed up by the baddies and he doesnrsquot even fight back However when he does make a comeback itrsquos seen to be believed In fact the praise should also be show-ered on Punit Malhotra for using Tigerrsquos action potential to the fullest and also seamlessly mak-ing it a part of filmrsquos narrative Ananya Panday is a complete star and she proves it She looks very convincing as a spoilt rich brat Her change of heart might seem unconvincing but once that hap-pens she impresses even more acting-wise Herrsquos is in fact the most moving character in the film and she wins hearts Tara Sutaria too puts her best foot forward Her screen presence too is something to watch out for Sadly she gets a bit sidelined in the second half but she surely gets noticed and is set for a bright future in Bollywood Aditya Seal is well casted and he is terrific as the baddie Watch

out for the scenes where hersquos silently observing and without saying a word he conveys a lot Harsh Beniwal (Puggi) is quite entertaining and raises laughs Ayesha Raza (Principal Singh) and Manoj Pahwa (Coach Mahi-pal) are a bit over the top but it was as per the requirement of the character Samir Soni (Principal Gujral) tries to be funny but fails Gul Panag (Coach Kuljeet) shines in a small role Chetan Pandit is alright Rajesh Kumar (Rohanrsquos astrologer uncle) is hilarious in his entry scene Manasi Joshi Roy (Roshanrsquos aunt) is unrecogniz-able and doesnrsquot have much to do Samreen Kaur (Miarsquos mother) is there for just one scene which is also needless Rajveer Singh (Se-curity guard Lahiri Singh) gets noticed Will Smith is seen for a few seconds while Alia Bhatt adds to the glamour quotient in the end credit song

On the whole Student Of The Year 2 is an entertaining and an enjoyable fare which will strike a chord in the audiencersquos hearts At the box office it has the potential to do excellent business

He entered this election cycle under pressure losing three state polls in December amid rising

The BJP has previously said that Modirsquos marriage was ar-ranged by his family and existed in name only

GENEVA - Japan has com-plained at the World Trade Orga-nization about Indiarsquos duties on mobile phones base stations and routers and the circuit boards and other components that go into them a WTO fi ling showed on Tuesday

Japanrsquos complaint the fi rst step in a legal dispute said India had sought to foster domestic production by adjusting various taxes including customs duties especially since it launched the ldquoMake in Indiardquo campaign in September 2014

Some of the tariff s on goods of substantial interest to Japan were now ldquoclearly in excessrdquo of the rates allowed by the WTO Japan said

Indiarsquos WTO membership terms specifi ed that the import tariff on all the disputed goods

was zero percent but India ap-plied a 20 tariff to mobile phones and base stations and tariff s of 10 15 and 20 on the other products Japan said

Trade data provided by the In-ternational Trade Centre a UN-WTO joint venture showed Japan accounted for a tiny pro-portion of Indiarsquos mobile phone imports valued at $53 million in 2011 and $43 million in 2012 but less than $2 million in all other years in the past decade

Indiarsquos mobile phone imports are dominated by China al-though its appetite for foreign phones has shrunk fast with to-tal imports sliding from a 2014 peak of $71 billion to below $15 billion in 2018 the data showed

NEW DELHI - Indiarsquos anti-trust watchdog has ordered an investigation into Alphabet Incrsquos unit Google for allegedly abus-ing the dominant position of its popular Android mobile operat-ing system to block rivals two sources aware of the matter told Reuters

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) last year started looking into the complaint which is similar to one Google faced in Europe that resulted in a 434 billion euro ($5 billion) fi ne on the company Reuters reported in February

In mid-April the CCI decided there was merit in the accusa-tions made in the complaint and ordered its investigation unit to launch a full probe one of the sources with direct knowledge of the matter said

That decision which was con-fi rmed by the second source has not been previously reported and the order calling the full investi-gation was not made public

ldquoIt is a strong case for the CCI given the EU precedentrdquo said the fi rst source ldquoThe CCI has (preliminarily) found Google abused its dominant positionrdquo

The probe would be complet-ed in about a year and Google executives would likely be sum-moned to appear before the CCI in coming months the source said

The CCI did not respond to a request for comment

A Google spokesman said Android has enabled millions of Indians to connect to the in-ternet by making mobile de-vices more aff ordable Google looked forward to working with the CCI ldquoto demonstrate how Android has led to more com-petition and innovation not lessrdquo the spokesman said in a statement

Reuters could not establish who fi led the complaint which involves more than one person

ldquoThey can either change their conduct in India voluntarily or let CCI investigate Voluntary change in conduct may have an impact on the quantum of pen-alty if itrsquos imposedrdquo said Shahi

The Indian investigation however is not the only antitrust trouble for the Mountain View

California-based company in its key market

Last year the CCI imposed a fi ne of 136 billion rupees ($1946 million) on Google for ldquosearch biasrdquo and abuse of its dominant position It also found Google had put its commer-cial fl ight search function in a prominent position on the search results page

Google appealed against that order saying the ruling could cause it ldquoirreparablerdquo harm and reputational loss

BENGALURU - The chief ex-ecutive and two other senior fi g-ures at Jet Airways have quit the Indian company said on Tuesday further eroding any hopes of a res-cue of the debt-laden carrier that grounded operations last month

Jet once the biggest private car-rier in the country owes vast sums to its lessors employees fuel sup-pliers and other parties It stopped all fl ights from April 17 after its lenders refused to give it any more funds to keep the carrier fl ying

Jet also saddled with roughly $12 billion in bank debt was crippled by mounting losses as it attempted to compete with low-cost rivals Interglobe-owned In-diGo SpiceJet Ltd and Wadia Group-owned GoAir

The airline has been rapidly shedding aircraft in recent weeks as lessors have rushed to dereg-ister and repossess planes in the wake of the turmoil

It has also lost hundreds of pi-lots cabin crew and engineers to rivals and seen its valuable slots reallocated to rivals further erod-ing any residual value and hopes

of new investors stepping in to rescue the airline

The departure of Chief Ex-ecutive Vinay Dube comes hard on the heels of the resignation of Chief Financial Offi cer Amit Agarwal announced earlier in the day Agarwalrsquos resignation was ef-fective May 13 the company said in a statement

Late on Tuesday the company said that Kuldeep Sharma who was its company secretary and compliance head has also stepped down with immediate eff ect

Separately the Economic Times newspaper reported on Tuesday that Jetrsquos Chief People Offi cer Rahul Taneja had also resigned Reuters was unable to confi rm the report

Amazon rolls out machines thatpack orders and replace jobs

SAN FRANCISCO - Amazoncom Inc is rolling out machines to automate a job held by thou-sands of its workers boxing up customer orders

The company started adding technology to a handful of ware-houses in recent years which

scans goods coming down a con-veyor belt and envelops them seconds later in boxes custom-built for each item two people who worked on the project told Reuters

Amazon has considered install-ing two machines at dozens more warehouses removing at least 24 roles at each one these people

said These facilities typically employ more than 2000 people

That would amount to more than 1300 cuts across 55 US fulfi llment centers for standard-sized inventory Amazon would expect to recover the costs in under two years at $1 million per machine plus operationalexpenses they said

People having surgery may be more likely to experience cardiovascular problems after-ward when they have a common nighttime breathing disorder known as sleep apnea a study suggests

Compared to patients without apnea people with severe apnea were more than twice as likely to

die of heart complications or ex-perience serious cardiac events like heart attacks and strokes within 30 days of surgery researchers report in JAMA

Previous research suggests that sleep irregularities can in-crease the risks for a variety of cardiovascular disorders such as clogged or hardened arteries high blood pressure irregular heartbeat and stroke as well

as metabolic problems like high cholesterol obesity and diabetes that all contribute to cardiovas-cular disease

For the current study re-searchers did sleep studies for 1218 patients before they had surgery for conditions unrelated to heart disease None of the pa-tients had been previously diag-nosed with apnea - which occurs when breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep - but two-thirds of them were found to have the condition based on their sleep study results

ldquoIn patients with severe ob-structive sleep apnea there are repeated episodes of complete or partial airway obstruction during sleeprdquo said lead study author Dr Matthew Chan of the Chinese University of Hong Kong

ldquoPatients having surgery are particularly vulnerable because the surgery and anesthetics are likely to worsen airway obstruc-tionrdquo Chan said by email

The type of anesthesia dur-ing the surgery didnrsquot appear to influence the risk of heart com-plications afterwards Use of opioids and oxygen therapy af-ter surgery also didnrsquot appear to impact the risk

Slightly more than one in 10 patients in the study had severe apnea when breathing stopped and started more than 30 times a night

About 19 percent of partici-pants had moderate apnea when breathing stopped and started at least 15 times a night 37 percent had mild apnea with no more than no more than five episodes a night

Like severe apnea moderate and mild cases also appeared to increase the risk of cardiac events after surgery But with the exception of severe apnea the increased risk was too small to rule out the possibility that it was due to chance

Patients with mild and moder-ate apnea were typically over-weight and people with severe apnea tended to be obese

The study wasnrsquot a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how undiagnosed or untreated apnea might directly cause heart problems after sur-gery

One limitation of the study is the potential for differences in postoperative care to influence the risk for heart complications the study authors note

Even so the results suggest

that identifying patients with un-diagnosed apnea prior to surgery may help reduce their risk of cardiac complications afterward said Dr Dennis Auckley of Case Western Reserve University and MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland Ohio who wrote an editorial that was published with the study

Thatrsquos because the recurrent episodes of low oxygen levels that happen with sleep apnea are associated with increased blood pressure and heart rate and place significant stress on the cardio-vascular system Auckley said by email

ldquoWhen this is happening ev-ery time an individual goes to sleep night after night it in-creases their risk for long-term cardiovascular complications (ie heart attacks heart rhythm problems stroke)rdquo Auckley added ldquoIt may be that the in-creased stress of the post-sur-gery environment which can temporarily worsen obstruc-tive sleep apnea and the low oxygen level associated with it accelerates the development of these bad outcomes in some-one at risk for them (eg se-vere untreated obstructive sleep apnea)rdquo

Severely obese women who opt for weight-loss surgery may be cutting their risk of breast cancer along with their extra pounds a large US study suggests

Researchers compared two groups of women with morbid obesity nearly 18000 who un-derwent various forms of so-called bariatric surgery and nearly 54000 who did not The groups were similar in terms of age med-ical conditions and body mass index (BMI a ratio of weight to height)

Researchers tracked the surgery group for an average of about 48 months and the no-surgery group for an average of about 41 months During the study period

women who had the weight-loss operations had a 37 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer compared to women who didnrsquot the researchers reported in Annals of Surgery

The risk was lowered by 45 percent in postmenopausal women and by 28 percent in premenopausal women

Among postmenopausal wom-en the reduction in risk was more pronounced for estrogen recep-tor (ER)-positive cancers These tumors depend on the hormone estrogen for growth the estrogen attaches to proteins called recep-tors on the cancer cells

Among premenopausal wom-en by contrast the risk reduc-tion was more pronounced for ER-negative cancers which donrsquot

Weight-loss surgery may help cut risk of breast cancerdepend on estrogen to grow and are more common in younger women

ldquoThe main takeaway is that the benefits are not exclusive to postmenopausal women or ER-positive women and this adds to the now growing body of litera-ture supporting cancer reduction as a meaningful benefit of weight lossrdquo Dr Brian Smith of UC Ir-vine Health in Orange California who was not involved in the study told Reuters Health by phone

That body of literature includes a large 2017 study that found morbidly obese women who had bariatric surgery were less likely to develop any type of cancer not just breast cancer

More than half of US parents believe itrsquos unsafe to text while driving but most of them do it anyway a new survey suggests

ldquoI think many people believe that texting and driving is un-safe but also have gotten away with reading andor writing texts at some point reinforcing a false sense of safetyrdquo said senior study author Dr Regan Berg-mark of Brigham and Womenrsquos Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston

Indeed 52 percent of mil-lennial parents (22 to 37 years old) and 58 percent of older parents said they thought it was ldquoneverrdquo safe to text and drive researchers report in JAMA Pediatrics

But almost two-thirds of par-ents have read texts while driv-ing and more than half of them have also written texts the sur-vey of 435 parents in 45 US states found

Millennials - a generation that includes many digital natives who grew up with smartphones - were more apt to have a variety of other dangerous habits while driving like using email check-ing email and speeding than older parents the survey also found

ldquoThe problem with smart-phones is that they have become an unavoidable part of daily life for most peoplerdquo Bergmark said by email

ldquoMany people are expected to be reachable by phone or email immediately to be reachable for their children or workrdquo Berg-mark added ldquoBeing a responsi-ble adult therefore often means always being reachable - yet we also know that while driving being reachable carries with it the risk of a crashrdquo

About 16 percent of millen-nial parents and 10 percent of older parents in the survey said they had been in at least one crash in the previous year

Compared to people who didnrsquot experience a crash those who did were much more likely to have a variety of unsafe driv-ing habits like speeding texting emailing and doing other things on their phones the survey found

Roughly three in four par-ents said they didnrsquot recall their childrsquos pediatrician speaking to them about distracted driving or the dangers of texting while driving

And only about one in four millennials and about one in six older parents had used apps or cell phone features aimed at cut-ting back on distracted driving

The study wasnrsquot a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how texting or other activities might cause crashes or if any specific interventions might help reduce this risk

ldquoIn general it is never safe to use a smartphone while drivingrdquo said Despina Stavrinos director

of the Translational Research for Injury Prevention (TRIP) Laboratory at the University of Alabama at Birmingham

ldquoThere are a number of apps that can help to limit distracted driving by disabling cell phone features when the vehicle is in motionrdquo Stavrinos who wasnrsquot

involved in the study said by email ldquoThe simplest thing to do is to put the phone out of sight and out of reach to reduce the temptation to drive distractedrdquo

Smartphones however are hardly the only dangerous source of distraction Stavrinos said

ldquoDistractions are tasks that require a driver to take hisher eyes off the road hands off the steering wheel and mind off of the roadrdquo Stavrinos added ldquoWhen tasks require all three of those domains (visual manual cognitive) they are considered to be a triple threat to safetyrdquo

Many US allergists now prescribe tablets instead of shots

Almost three in four US al-lergy specialists are prescribing tablets to ease symptoms caused by pollen ragweed and dust at least some of the time though they have not completely shifted away from allergy shots a survey suggests

The upside of allergy shots available for more than a century is they can be formulated to treat more than one allergy But they are not always appealing to pa-tients because they require mul-tiple office visits to administer Recently-introduced tablets dis-solve under the tongue and can generally be taken at home but can only target one allergen at a time

Researchers examined data from surveys completed by 305 allergists Overall 91 percent

reported using allergy shots and 74 percent reported using the newer tablets the study team reports in the Annals of Allergy Asthma amp Immunology

ldquoThe tablets work best if you have just one allergy that both-ers you like dust mite or grassrdquo said lead study author Dr Anita Sivam of the University of Ten-nessee Health Science Center in Memphis

ldquoWe still recommend allergy shots to the majority of patients because most patients have mul-tiple allergiesrdquo Sivam said by email

Both shots and tablets are so-called immunotherapy treatments for allergies meaning they work by targeting the immune system to improve tolerance of allergens and depleted cells chemicals and antibodies that can cause allergy symptoms

Over time allergy shots and tablets allow patients to be ex-posed to pollen dust and other allergens without having any reaction Immunotherapy also reduces the inflammation that characterizes hay fever and asth-ma so many sufferers find their symptoms improve

Doctors typically give patients the first dose of an allergy tablet in the office and after that pre-scribe tablets for people to take at home With shots patients return to the office for every dose

In the study 96 percent of al-lergists who used tablets required at least one dose to be admin-istered in their office About 3 percent made patients come in for two doses 4 percent required office visits for three doses and almost 2 percent required pa-tients to come in for at least four doses

Repetition helps preschoolers learn to eat healthy foods

By using the right words and repeating the phrases adults can help young kids get over picky eating behaviors and eat healthier foods according to a new study

Saying ldquoLentils will help you run fasterrdquo for instance encour-ages preschoolers to understand the benefits and pick the foods they want the study authors write in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior

ldquoPrevious studies have shown that adults struggle with how to talk to young children about foodrdquo said lead study author Jane Lanigan of Washington State University in Vancouver

Most children between 4 and 8 years old donrsquot meet recom-mended guidelines for vegeta-bles grains and fatty acids and they tend to eat too many empty calories

ldquoConversations are sometimes inaccurate or not helpful or even harmful in terms of helping a child learn to eat healthfullyrdquo she told Reuters Health by email

Lanigan and colleagues worked with 87 preschoolers from two early childhood education cen-ters testing whether repeat ex-posure and the correct phrasing would help preschoolers try four foods that are generally less ac-cepted by little kids tomatoes bell peppers lentils and quinoa

The researchers also surveyed parents about their childrsquos eating history the meal environment at home and nutrition knowledge as well as parental income and education

In the exposure tests the study team assessed whether the chil-dren liked the foods which were presented separately in small plastic containers The tomatoes and green peppers were raw and chopped into bite-sized pieces The quinoa and lentils were cooked with no added spices Kids who refused to sample a food were encouraged to smell touch or lick it and told they could try it and spit it out if they wanted too

Ali Abbas Zafarrsquos third film with Salman Khan is markedly different from the first two In ldquoBharatrdquo a remake of the 2014 Korean film ldquoOde to my Fatherrdquo Zafar attempts to tell the story of one man against the backdrop of modern India and its major socio-political changes

Zafar spoke to us about ldquoBharatrdquo and what it takes to make a hit Salman Khan film and why the 52-year-old film star remains relatable to younger moviegoers

Q How tough was this film to make

A I would say that on paper this is my toughest film Because I am not dealing with just one time frame ndash I had to go through the 40rsquos 50rsquos 60rsquos 70rsquos ndash all these pe-riods in time ndash it was like making six films

It is set in chapters and talks of each decade as a story so each of those time frames has a middle beginning and an end To re-create it and make it look au-thentic was a different ballgame altogether Today with the quality of films going up so drastically you cannot do a sub-standard job and get away with it When you make something it must look real and on par with any international project We took a year to get the research right the costumes refer-enced and for the sets to be raised

Q Your film is based on the Korean film ldquoOde to my Fatherrdquo but the two countries havenrsquot had very similar histories in terms of how they progressed after in-dependence How did you find similarities

A When Salman asked me to watch the film right after ldquoSul-tanrdquo I told him that I would not be able to do a remake He said lsquojust watch itrsquo I did and found that there was something magical about the subject I went back to him after two weeks and told him that if I make this film itrsquoll have to go into a complete rewrite and it wonrsquot remain ldquoOde to my Fa-therrdquo Because our socio-cultural scenarios our politics history is all very different from theirs And if Salman is starring in the film then I would have to write a character which would suit him

So it went into a severe rewrite and now when you look at it they are two very different films The basic story is still the same which is a family being displaced because of political chaos The filmrsquos driving force is the emotion ndash a promise to his father and how he keeps it all his life

Q This is your third straight Salman Khan film What is the trick to making a hit film with him

A Whenever I take a script to him I feel that I have to write a character that is larger than his on-screen and off-screen persona Something that when he steps into it looks bigger than he does

When I wrote ldquoSultanrdquo the character was customised for him but it has its own weight Same with ldquoTiger Zinda Hairdquo (ldquoTiger Livesrdquo) - it is Salman Khan but he is not just fighting for love anymore ndash he is saving 59 nurses

That is my ground rule that when he sees the script he should feel ldquoyes my audience will like it and I will have to push myself a little extra since my last filmrdquo

Q Why do you think there is a marked difference in the kind of choices he has made in the last six or seven years It is no longer about him taking his shirt off at the end of the film

A According to me there is a very evolved actor in him which people donrsquot see because of his persona Many times there is a perception about him that he is moody or scary but that is not true at all This is a man who has sustained himself for 30 years in this industry because he is a good actor and enjoys the craft

The changes have happened because those stories have come to him and the people he is work-ing with have seen that side of

him He also must have been bored with taking off his shirt in all his films Actors are like kids and scripts are like toys Every time they get something that gives them something new but is still in their comfort zone and they trust the person who makes them do it they jump at the chance

Q Salman Khan is 52 years old What makes him so relatable to younger audiences

A What makes him relatable is his donrsquot-care attitude He can go on a talk show and say what he wants without caring about what people will think People relate to his off-screen persona a lot Audi-ences go in and they like the film If you like it irrespective of your age you relate to him You have to hit that taste

Q How do you lsquohit that tastersquoA You have to be educated

about what is happening around you with the reality of the coun-try you are living in and your craft has to match internation-al standards So that when an 18-year-old who has just watched ldquoAvengersrdquo comes and watches your film he says the VFX the action it is all on par with the best in the world And at heart he has to find a story that is about him and his land

Films are like food ndash we all need it If you make good dal-chawal (lentils and rice) you will always find takers Because that is soul food for our audiences
