Kaspersky intelligence ranks Bahrain’s most prominent APT threatsTDT | Manama

Kaspersky researchers have kept a close eye on Bah-

rain for Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) and worked on six investigative reports related to three cyber gangs actively targeting the country since the start of the pandemic in 2020.

Kaspersky researchers issued six threat intelligence reports on investigations associated with APT groups targeting Bah-rain.

Kaspersky has found that these APT groups primarily target Bahrain’s governmental and diplomatic institutions as well as educational organisa-

tions.Other targeted entities in-

clude financial institutions, tel-ecommunications, civil aviation and healthcare. Some of the no-torious APT groups investigated in Bahrain is the MuddyWater, Oil Rig and Hades.

The research team has found that Exploit Public facing Ap-plications, Valid Accounts, and Phishing are the most commons attack vectors against Bahrain’s infrastructures.

For example, MuddyWater, a Middle Eastern espionage mo-tivated APT group that targets government, telco and oil com-panies to derive information, using compromised accounts

to send spearphishing emails with targeted attachments to recipients.

OilRig is another Middle Eastern APT targeting organisa-tions that have presence across multiple industries using social engineering techniques.

The Hades APT group uses deception-based techniques on their targets. They infiltrate into target networks to select the best location for the launch and forge elements of an attack to make it seem like the work of a different threat actor.

Light fog today, cold weather on Friday

• Meteorological Department advises people, especially sea-goers, to take precautions

TDT | Manama

The Ministry of Transpor-tation and Telecommuni-

cations’ Meteorological Direc-torate forecast a partly cloudy and little foggy weather in the Kingdom of Bahrain today, and cold wind on Friday.

The surface maps indicate the control of an air rise over the northern Arabian Penin-sula, which led to the blowing of northwesterly winds on the Arabian Gulf. The Kingdom of Bahrain is affected by active to strong winds, sometimes with dusty speed in some areas.

It is expected that the wind speed will gradually decrease this evening, which leads to an increase in surface humidity.

As a result, light fog may form in some open areas during the early hours tomorrow morning, which leads to a decrease in the level of horizontal visibility, and the

atmosphere tends to warm during the day tomorrow and on Thurs-day due to the control of southern winds throughout the day.

It is expected that the north-west winds will return starting from Friday and the following days, to reach from active to strong speed, sometimes causing dust in some areas, and there will be an actual decrease in temper-atures in the succeeding days.

The Meteorological Depart-ment advises the people, espe-cially sea-goers, to take precau-tions, and to follow its official bulletins and warnings through multiple channels.

Foggy weather will reduce visibility on the road

Kaspersky has found that these APT groups primarily target Bah-

rain’s governmental and diplomatic institutions as well as educational

GFH acquires $200m medical offices portfolio in the US

• Buys 11 assets across seven states

TDT | Manama

GFH Financial Group has acquired a portfolio of

medical offices in the US worth around $200 million as part of its strategy to build a portfolio of stabilised assets driven by solid long term fundamentals and operating growth.

Spread across seven states – North Carolina, South Caro-lina, Georgia, Utah, Wisconsin, Ohio and Texas –the medical offices portfolio consists of 11 assets and 400,000 square feet of space. The Sharia-compli-ant deal brings the value of the GFH’s group’s US healthcare portfolio to over $400 million. Medical Offices refers to fa-cilities leased to outpatient medical and medical related services. These include dif-ferent specalisiations of med-icine (including dermatology, paediatrics and other various specalizations) as well as labs and anciliary medical services.

The portfolio comprises as-sets that are leased to some of the largest names in US health-care, including Cleveland Clin-ic, Texas A&M Health Science Centre, Novant Health, Spar-tanbrug Regional Healthcare System, Texas Health Resourc-es and Baylor Scott & White Health. The assets cover a range of specialist care sectors

and are positioned on hospital campuses or near hospitals with a solid customer base across the Southeast, Midwest and Southwest. The portfolio with a WAULT of near 10 years comprises of both long term and short term leases, allowing it to benefit from long term sta-bility as well potential upside.

“The pandemic has under-lined a need for more outpa-tient services and continued demand for healthcare servic-es. As a result we are seeing strong investor sentiment in the medical offices sector. This trend is particularly true in the US, where healthcare spend-ing comprises around 18% of GDP, compared to around 10% for most other developed countries,” said Nael Mustafa, Co-Chief Investment Officer – Real Estate at GFH.

Nael added: “GFH’s focus on defensive sectors and reces-sion proof investments, such as healthcare, is known for delivering both value and re-turns for shareholders. We are confident that our US medical offices portfolio will help our partners to capitalise on the surging demand for health-care in the US in the coming decades.”

News in brief u Saudi Arabia will deposit $3 billion in Pakistan’s foreign reserves in a week or so for one year at 4% interest under a support package signed on Monday, Pakistan’s finance ministry spokesman said yesterday. The South Asian nation has faced growing economic challenges with sliding foreign reserves, a widening current account deficit, a depreciating currency and high inflation. Pakistan’s total liquid foreign reserves stand at $22.77 billion, according to the central bank. The Saudi support package that included a $1.2 billion oil loan facility was agreed during Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to Riyadh last month.

u Barbados ditched Britain’s Queen Elizabeth as head of state, forging a new republic yesterday with its first-ever president

and severing its last remaining colonial bonds nearly 400 years after the first English ships arrived at the Caribbean island. At the

strike of midnight, the new republic was born to cheers of hundreds of people lining Chamberlain Bridge in the capital, Bridgetown. A 21-gun salute fired as the national anthem of Barbados was played over a crowded Heroes Square. Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, stood somberly as Queen Elizabeth’s royal standard was lowered and the new Barbados declared, a step which republicans hope will spur discussion of similar proposals in other former British colonies that have the Queen as their sovereign.

u The United Arab Emirates will not stop Lebanese from travelling to the country in a diplomatic row between Beirut and Gulf Arab states, a senior Emirati official said. Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, told reporters on Tuesday that Abu Dhabi would continue humanitarian support to Lebanon and did not want Lebanese citizens to suffer more due to the ongoing politcal and economic crisis in the country.

u There will be a problem if Iran does not show it is serious in nuclear negotiations with world powers this week, senior European diplomats said yesterday. As talks resumed in Vienna, the diplomats from France, Britain and Germany, known as the E3, told reporters that they had still not resolved the

thorny issue of what to do with advanced centrifuges which Iran is using to enrich uranium.

u Russian President Vladimir Putin said yesterday he had not yet decided whether to run for six more years in the Kremlin when his current term ends in 2024, while praising US President Joe Biden’s decision to seek re-election in that year. Putin has been in power as president or prime minister since the turn of the century, making him the longest-serving Kremlin leader since Josef Stalin.

Of Scooters and War Horses

‘Bucephalus’ was the war horse of

Alexander the Great. Though

many people know Alexander also as Iskandar

or Sikandar, they do not know

the name of the powerful horse

that made his master famous.

In  the late 80s and early 90s, when cars were still distant dreams for many in India, if your family purchased a scooter

called ‘Bajaj Chetak’, it meant you have finally reached the ‘middle class’.

Based on the Vespa Sprint model, it was manufactured in India by Bajaj under license from the Italian company Vespa.

Yes. It was the same Vespa that the handsome Gregory Peck drove all over Rome, with beautiful Audrey Hepburn behind him, in that Hollywood classic ‘Roman Holiday’.

Though they had not seen that movie, many soon-to-be brides in India had dreamily hoped to win a husband who owns a ‘Chetak’. They knew that, sitting sideways, resplendent in their bright saris, they could then curl their arms around husbands’ waists, and coyly dodge the envious stares of non-Chetak cou-ples, when they whizzed past them.

The brand name ‘Chetak’ was based on the famous war horse of the great Indian Rajput warrior, Maha Rana Pratap Singh.

The faithfulness of this horse called Chetak was legendary, just as the faithfulness of the scooter called Chetak had become legendary. for many years, thanks to the sturdy and reliable performances of both.

Sadly, however, the brand ‘Chetak’ died an unfortunate death, a few years ago. It was brutally run over by newer motorbikes with newer brand names. When the trendier, jeans-clad, or salwar-clad woman of India would rather have her man, zoom her away on a stylish motorbike, and not a scoot-er, what should the makers do? When men preferred mo-torbikes with modish names like Pulsar, Discover, Dazzler or Stunner, what should the makers do?

Bajaj stopped making scoot-ers and focussed on motor bikes.

But now realiziing that the electric scooter market is huge and growing, Bajaj has now decided to rebrand and resur-rect  ‘Chetak’ as a stylish new ‘electric scooter’.

The old war horse, the real ‘Chetak’ had died an unfortu-nate death too - in the Battle of Haldighati of 1576 AD – during a huge skirmish between the brave Rajput king Maharana Pratap Singh and the troops of Mughal emperor Akbar.

‘Copenhagen’ too was a famous war. He was the horse of UK’s first Duke of Wellington. It was on this horse that the duke famously rode at the Battle of Waterloo.

So, Napoleon’s defeat, to a large extent, can be indirectly at-tributed to the speed and agility of this great equine specimen.

As an offspring of a mixed thoroughbred and one of Arabian parentage, Copenhagen lived a perilous life, but died a natural death - as an old war horse - after retirement.

Many people do not know, however, that the rider of ‘Copen-hagen,’ who defeated Napoleon in 1815 at Waterloo, was the same man who defeated Tippu Sultan earlier in 1799, at Seringapatam, near Mysore, in India.  His earlier name? Lord Arthur Wellesley.

‘Bucephalus’ was the war horse of Alexander the Great. Though many people know Alexander also as Iskandar or Sikandar, they do not know the name of the powerful horse that made his master famous.

Historical accounts say that a horse dealer sold this once completely “untamable” horse to Alexander’s father, King Philip II of Macedonia.

Alexander, who was only thirteen, spoke softly to Bucephalus, and rode him slowly towards the sun - so that the horse could not see his own shadow, which was causing him distress – and thereby successfully tamed the horse.

After many battles, Bucephalus died in the Battle of the Hy-daspes (in June 326 BC) which took place in what is modern day Pakistan. He was buried at Jalalpur Sharif, in Jhelum district. And Alexander apparently named a city after his horse.

Through cities and scooters, therefore, some old war horses still live on. As they should.

Omicron could outcompete Delta, S.African expert says• Too early to say displacing Delta but cases rising rapidly

• Likely to know variant characteristics in four weeks

• Investigating any Omicron link to COVID illness in infants

Reuters | Johannesburg

The Omicron coronavirus variant detected in south-ern Africa could be the

most likely candidate to displace the highly contagious Delta vari-ant, the director of South Africa’s communicable disease institute said yesterday.

The discovery of Omicron has caused global alarm, with coun-tries limiting travel from southern Africa for fear it could spread quickly even in vaccinated pop-ulations and the World Health Organisation saying it carries a high risk of infection surges.

“We thought what will outcom-pete Delta? That has always been the question, in terms of trans-missibility at least, ... perhaps this particular variant is the variant,” Adrian Puren, acting executive director of South Africa’s Nation-

al Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), told Reuters in an interview.

If Omicron proves even more transmissible than the Delta var-iant, it could lead to a sharp spike in infections that could put pres-sure on hospitals.

Puren said scientists should know within four weeks to what extent Omicron can evade the immunity generated by vaccines or prior infection, and whether it leads to worse clinical symptoms than other variants.

Anecdotal accounts by doctors who have treated South African COVID-19 patients say Omicron appears to be producing mild symptoms, including a dry cough, fever and night sweats, but ex-perts have cautioned against drawing firm conclusions.

Puren said it was too early to say whether Omicron was dis-placing Delta in South Africa, since local scientists have only produced 87 sequences of Omi-cron so far.

But the fact that cases have started to rise rapidly, especial-ly in the most populated Gaut-eng province, is a sign that some displacement might already be happening.

Delta drove a third wave of COVID-19 infections in South Af-rica that peaked at more than 26,000 cases per day in early July. Omicron is expected to trigger a fourth wave, with daily infections

seen topping 10,000 by the end of the week from around 2,270 on Monday.

Anne von Gottberg, a clinical microbiologist at the NICD, said it looked like infections were rising throughout the country.

On Monday, an NICD presenta-tion a flagged a large number of COVID-19 admissions among in-fants aged under two years as an area of concern. But von Gottberg cautioned against linking that with Omicron just yet.

“It looks like in fact some of those admissions might have started before the emergence of Omicron. We are also seeing that there was an increase in influenza cases just in the last month or so, and so we need to be really careful to look at the other respiratory infections,” she said.

“We are looking at the data very, very carefully, but at the moment I’m not too sure that we can link it definitively to Omicron.”

South Africa has been praised for alerting the global scientific community and WHO so quick-ly to Omicron -- a brave move given the damage that travel restrictions imposed by multi-ple countries including Britain will do to its important tourism sector.

The country has reported close to 3 million COVID-19 infections during the pandemic and over 89,000 deaths, the most on the African continent.

Tedros warns against over-reactionReuters | Geneva

The head of the World Health Organisation (WHO) voiced

concern yesterday that some countries were introducing blanket measures against the Omicron coronavirus variant that may not be necessary and penalised African nations unfairly.

“I well understand the concern of all countries to protect their citizens against a variant that we don’t yet fully understand,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“But I am equally concerned that several Member States are introducing blunt, blanket measures that are not evidence-based or effective on their own, and which will only worsen inequities.”

In remarks to a closed-door meeting posted on its website, the WHO’s Ethiopian head urged the 194 member states to stick to “rational, proportional” measures

No Omicron-linked deaths have yet been reported though the WHO has said it poses a high risk of infection surges.

Mask mandates come into force in England

Reuters | London

New mask mandates and other measures aimed

at curbing the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant came into force in England yesterday, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson eyes an expand-ed booster programme to help increase protection against COVID-19. From yesterday morning, face masks are com-pulsory on transport and in shops, banks and hair salons.

All international travellers must take a PCR test by the end of the second day after they arrive, and self-isolate until they get their result. That is in addition to restrictions on arrivals from 10 southern Af-rican countries, who have to enter hotel quarantine.

Britain has reported 11 cases of the Omicron variant so far,

and while the government says this number will rise, it says it is important to slow its spread until more is known about the variant’s tranmissibility and impact on vaccines.

“The measures taking effect today are proportionate and responsible, and will buy us time in the face of this new variant,” Johnson said in a statement.

“Not only will today’s steps help us slow down the vari-ant’s spread, but they will help us protect each other and the gains we have all worked so hard for.”

Johnson has said the meas-ures will be reviewed after three weeks, but added that the country’s vaccine rollout leaves it in a better situation than this time last year, when restrictions were introduced shortly before Christmas.

Putin hits back as NATO warns Moscow against attacking Ukraine

• Western alarm grows at Russian troop build-up

• Putin: Moscow wouldn’t accept NATO missiles in Ukraine

• NATO alliance ministers meet in Latvia

• Moscow denies any aggressive intentions

Reuters | Riga/Moscow

Russia would pay a high price for any new military aggres-

sion against Ukraine, NATO and the United States warned yes-terday as the Western military alliance met to discuss Moscow’s possible motives for massing troops near the Ukrainian border.

President Vladimir Putin coun-tered that Russia would be forced to act if US-led NATO placed mis-siles in Ukraine that could strike Moscow within minutes.

Ukraine, a former Soviet re-public that now aspires to join the European Union and NATO, has become the main flashpoint between Russia and the West as relations have soured to their worst level in the three decades

since the Cold War ended.“There will be a high price to

pay for Russia if they once again use force against the independ-ence of the nation Ukraine,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stolten-berg told reporters.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken echoed Stoltenberg, say-ing: “Any escalatory actions by Russia would be a great concern to the United States..., and any renewed aggression would trigger serious consequences.”

Tensions have been rising for weeks, with Russia, Ukraine and NATO all staging military exercises amid mutual recriminations over which side is the aggressor.

Putin went further than previ-ously in spelling out Russia’s “red lines” on Ukraine, saying it would have to respond if NATO deployed

advanced missile systems on its neighbour’s soil.

“If some kind of strike systems appear on the territory of Ukraine, the flight time to Moscow will be 7-10 minutes, and five minutes in the case of a hypersonic weapon being deployed. Just imagine,” the Kremlin leader said.

“What are we to do in such a scenario? We will have to then create something similar in rela-tion to those who threaten us in that way. And we can do that now,” he said, pointing to Russia’s recent testing of a hypersonic weapon he said could fly at nine times the speed of sound.

EU and other Western leaders are involved in a geopolitical tug-of-war with Russia for influence in Ukraine and two other ex-So-viet republics, Moldova and Geor-gia, through trade, cooperation and protection arrangements.

Wife of Mexican drug lord ‘El Chapo’ to face sentencing in US courtReuters | Washington

US prosecutors will ask a judge to sentence the wife

of imprisoned Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman to four years in pris-on after she pleaded guilty to helping the Sinaloa drug car-tel.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, 32, pleaded guilty in June to three counts of conspiring to distrib-ute illegal drugs, conspiring to launder money and of engag-ing in financial dealings with the Sinaloa drug cartel.

Federal prosecutors on Tuesday also intend to ask US District Judge Rudolph Contreras to order Coronel to forfeit $1.5 million as part of her sentence. She is scheduled to appear in federal court in Washington, DC, at 12 p.m. EST (1700 GMT).

“The defendant committed a serious crime against the Unit-ed States,” prosecutors wrote in their sentencing memo. “Given the adverse impact that drug trafficking has on society and the serious detrimental ef-fects of cocaine, heroin, meth-amphetamine, and marijuana in communities, it is important that the Court impose a sen-tence that deters others from undermining the rule of law.”

Coronel, a US-born former beauty queen who married Guzman while she was a teen-ager, was arrested at Dulles International Airport outside Washington in February.

As part of her plea agree-ment with prosecutors, Cor-onel admitted to acting as a courier between Guzman and other members of the Sinaloa cartel while he was being held in Mexico’s Altiplano prison following his 2014 arrest.

Guzman used those com-munications to plan his 2015 escape from the prison, north of Toluca, Mexico, through an underground tunnel built by the cartel leading to the show-er in his cell.

The drug lord was recap-tured in January 2016 and ex-tradited one year later to the United States.

He was convicted in Febru-ary 2019 of drug trafficking, conspiracy, kidnapping, mur-der and other charges, and lat-er sentenced to life in prison.

condemnation and sanctions from the West. Most of the world continues to recognise Crimea as Ukrainian territory. Kyiv wants it back.

The measures taking effect today are pro-

Lionel Messi adds seventh Ballon d’Or to his record haulLionel Messi beats Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho to lift soccer’s most prestigious trophy yet again

• Alexia Putellas crowned women’s winner

AFP | Paris

Lionel Messi admitted winning the Copa Amer-ica with Argentina might

have been the determining fac-tor in him claiming the men’s Ballon d’Or prize for the seventh time after a turbulent year, as Spain’s Alexia Putellas took the women’s award.

Now 3 4, Me s s i p i p p e d much-fancied rivals like Robert Lewandowski and Karim Ben-zema to take the award in a glit-tering ceremony on Monday in Paris, the city he now calls home after leaving boyhood club Bar-celona for Paris Saint-Germain in August.

Despite his tearful goodbye from Barcelona and his rela-tively underwhelming start to life in France, the jury of jour-nalists from around the world rewarded him in particular for captaining Argentina to their first major international title since 1993.

“Two years ago I thought I was coming into my final years but here I am again back here,” said Messi, who won the last edition of the Ballon d’Or in 2019 before last year’s awards were cancelled due to the pan-demic.

Messi also won in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and in 2015.

“People were starting to ask me when I was going to retire but now I am here in Paris and I am very happy,” he said at the Chatelet Theatre in central Par-is, where he was joined by his

wife Antonella Roccuzzo and their three children.

“I don’t know how many more years I have left but I hope there will be many because I am really enjoying myself this year.

“What I achieved with Argen-tina was a dream come true. I think I won this trophy thanks to what we did at the Copa America, so I dedicate it to my teammates.”

Argentina beat Brazil 1-0 in the final in Rio de Janeiro as Messi won a major title with his country for the first time. He also scored 38 goals in 48 games

in his final season with Barcelo-na and won the Copa del Rey.

Lewandowski second However Messi has played

just 11 times and scored four goals for PSG since joining the French club and there was a feeling that this year might see a different winner.

Poland striker Lewandowski would have been a shoe-in in 2020, when he scored 45 goals in 37 games for Bayern, only for the awards to be cancelled.

He ended last season with a remarkable 41 Bundesliga goals but had to settle for sec-ond place in the voting for the Ballon d’Or, which is organised by France Football magazine and voted for by a panel of jour-nalists from around the world.

Lewandowski instead was given a consolation prize for the year’s best goal-scorer and received glowing praise from Messi.

“I wanted to say to Robert that it was an honour to go up against him. He deserved to win it last year,” Messi said.

Midfielder Jorginho, who

won the Champions League with Chelsea and Euro 2020 with Italy, came third, followed by Real Madrid’s Karim Benze-ma and another Chelsea player, N’Golo Kante.

Five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo came sixth. He was absent from the ceremony.

Between them, Messi and Ronaldo have won 12 of the last 13 editions of the Ballon d’Or with the exception com-ing in 2018 when Luka Modric claimed the prize.

Putellas succeeds Rapinoe This is just the third year that

a women’s Ballon d’Or has been awarded, with Putellas follow-ing in the footsteps of Norway’s Ada Hegerberg, winner in 2018, and the United States’ 2019 World Cup superstar Megan Rapinoe.

Spain international Putellas, 27, captained Barcelona to vic-tory in this year’s Champions League, scoring a penalty in the final as her side hammered Chelsea 4-0.

She also won a Spanish league and cup double with Barca, the club she joined as a teenager in 2012 and who are fast becoming the dominant force in the wom-en’s game.

Benzema not upset after Ballon d’Or snub - AncelottiAFP | Madrid

Real Madrid coach Carlo An-celotti said yesterday Karim

Benzema is “not crying” about missing out on winning his first Ballon d’Or.

Benzema, 33, finished fourth behind Messi, Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, and Chelsea midfielder Jorgin-ho.

In his Madrid press confer-ence yesterday, Ancelotti was asked if the Ballon d’Or “still has credibility” following Messi’s latest victory.

“We have to respect the de-cision. Messi won and he’s still a great player,” Ancelotti said.

“For the players, individu-al awards are important and they give motivation - but if they don’t win them, it doesn’t matter.

“Benzema has had a great sea-son and finished fourth and now he will have extra motivation to finish first next year.”

Ancelotti added: “It’s an im-portant award but it’s still in-dividual. Karim Benzema isn’t crying about not winning it, nor Thibaut Courtois. They have

accepted it without any prob-lems.”

Ancelotti said he would have voted Benzema, Vinicius Jun-ior and Luka Modric as his top three.

Vinicius scored a scintillating late winner against Sevilla on Sunday as Madrid moved four points clear at the top of La Liga.

They could extend that ad-vantage to seven points by beat-ing Athletic Bilbao at the Santi-ago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

“I don’t know if we are fa-vourites for La Liga but we’re playing well and we’re consist-ent,” Ancelotti said.

Ancelotti also said Madrid will not sign any players in January but admitted unhap-py players could be allowed to leave.

Some players like Isco and Eden Hazard have found them-selves out of favour under Ance-lotti this season.

Ancelotti said Hazard will be

available against Athletic Bilbao but insisted the Belgium attack-er “must improve his fitness because he’s had problems of different kinds.”

“I don’t like January signings much. If we have players who aren’t happy, it’s something we can think about but we are not going to sign anyone.

“We have enough to compete until the end of the season.”

Ronaldo hits back at claim he wants to beat Messi’s Ballon d’Or haul

AFP | London

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has

hit back at a “disrespectful” claim that his only remaining ambition is to win the Ballon d’Or more times than Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo, who finished sixth in this year’s voting, has earned the Ballon d’Or five times.

The Ballon d’Or, given to the best male and female football-ers of the year, is voted on by 180 journalists and presented by France Football.

Pascal Ferre, the editor in chief of France Football, was quoted in the New York Times recently saying Ronaldo told him his primary motivation was to retire having won the accolade more often than his old rival Messi.

Ronaldo, 36, took to Insta-gram to deny that suggestion.

“Today’s outcome explains Pascal Ferre’s statements last week, when he said that I confided in him that my only ambition was to finish my ca-reer with more Ballon d’Ors than Lionel Messi,” Ronaldo wrote.

“Pascal Ferre lied, he used

my name to promote himself and to promote the publication he works for.

“It is unacceptable that the person responsible for award-ing such a prestigious prize could lie in this way, in abso-lute disrespect for someone who has always respected France Football and the Bal-lon d’Or.

“The biggest ambition of my career is to win national and international titles for the clubs I represent and for the national team in my country.

“The biggest ambition of my career is to be a good example for all those who are or want to be professional footballers.

“The biggest ambition of my career is to leave my name written in golden letters in the history of world football.”

Ronaldo, who did not attend Monday’s prize-giving event in Paris, last won the Ballon d’Or in 2017.

Tuchel tells Jorginho to ignore Ballon d’Or snub AFP | London

Thomas Tuchel said yes-terday Chelsea midfielder

Jorginho does not need Ballon d’Or recognition to prove he is among the world’s best after the Italian finished third in the prestigious player of the year award.

Jorginho helped Chelsea

win the Champions League last season before emerging as a key figure in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph.

And, while the 29-year-old was unable to cap a memorable year with the Ballon d’Or, the Blues boss is more interested in helping his players achieve collective success rather than personal plaudits.

Guardiola concerned by Man City’s injury ‘emergency’AFP | London

Pep Guardiola said yesterday that Manchester City are

dealing with an injury “emer-gency” as the wounded Premier League champions limp into the hectic December schedule.

Kevin de Bruyne is yet to re-turn to training as City’s star midfielder recovers from the coronavirus, while Ferran Tor-res is a long-term absentee with a foot injury

Phil Foden and Jack Grealish have also struggled with inju-ries, although both could play some part in City’s trip to Aston Villa on Wednesday.

Guardiola will also be with-out the suspended Aymeric Laporte at Villa Park and he be-lieves City face a difficult spell heading towards Christmas.

“We have an emergency in the squad. We have few, few, few people,” Guardiola told re-porters.

“We never complain when it is not possible for players to play for injuries or red cards.

“I trust a lot in the squad and other players who come in but we are in real trouble for De-cember, the toughest month of the year.”

Guardiola is holding out hope that England midfielder Gre-alish could return to face his former club on Wednesday.

Grealish, who joined City

from Villa in the close-sea-son, has missed their last three games with a knock sustained on international duty.

Foden is also hoping to prove his fitness after being side-lined for the wins against Paris Saint-Germain and West Ham in the past week.

“In the training sessions, for Jack yesterday was his first minutes with the team. For Phil too,” Guardiola said.

“Today both will be tested to see if they can travel tomorrow to Birmingham to play.

“Kevin still didn’t train. He’s negative from the last test but he could not train.”

Despite their fitness issues, City are just one point behind leaders Chelsea and have won their last five games in all com-petitions.

Not satisfied with that run, Guardiola urged his team to be even more ruthless.

“The way we have done so far has been exceptional. We have the toughest month ahead so we have to continue,” Guardi-ola said.

Bahrain fall to narrow loss in Arab CupKingdom’s senior men’s national football team concede 69th minute goal in 0-1 loss to hosts Qatar in opening Group A match

of FIFA Arab Cup 2021 in Doha

• Midfielder Abdulaziz Hatem scores winner for Qatar with a 69th minute header

• Mahdi Humaidan, Sayed Dhiya Saeed, Mahdi Abduljabbar have Bahrain’s best chances

TDT | Manama

Bahrain fell to a narrow 0-1 defeat to hosts Qatar last night in their open-

ing match of the FIFA Arab Cup 2021.

Midfielder Abdulaziz Hatem scored the winner for the home side with a 69th minute header. The Qatari skipper fired home in the face of goal off a cross

from the left supplied by for-ward Akram Afif.

The Bahrainis had a number of chances in both halves to score but were unable to apply the finishing touches and fire into the net.

The game was the first of three for both sides in Group A of the competition’s preliminary round. It was played at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor. Bahrain are back in action on Friday when they took on Iraq, who drew 1-1 with Oman in yesterday’s other Group A clash.

With yesterday’s results, the Bahrainis are bottom of the group table with zero points.

Head coach Helio Sousa start-ed a first 11 that included Sayed Mohammed Jaafar between the posts; Waleed Al Hayam, Sayed Dhiya Saeed, Ahmed Bugham-mar and Sayed Redha Isa in de-fence; Ali Madan, Mohammed

Hardan, Jassim Al Shaikh, Ko-mail Alaswad and Mahdi Hu-maidan in midfield; and Mo-hammed Al Rumaihi as the lone striker.

A majority of Bahrain’s chanc-es came in the first half. The nationals should have taken the lead in as early as the seventh

minute, but Humaidan hit his header from close range just inches wide of the left post off a well-placed cross from the right wing by Alaswad.

Saeed also had a good chance with a 44th minute free-kick from distance, but his left-footed effort barely flew past the out-side of the right post.

Goalkeeper Jaafar was in top form in the opening 45 minutes, making a number of crucial saves to keep the Qataris at bay.

But in the second half, the Qataris were able to find their winner as Hatem did enough to head home past the outstretched arm of a diving Jaafar.

Sousa made a number of sub-stitutions in an attempt to try and salvage a draw. Mohammed Jassim Marhoon came on for Humaidan, Ismaeel Abdullatif substituted Al Rumaihi, Abdul-wahab Al Malood stepped in

for Hardan, Mahdi Abduljabbar came on for Madan, and Abbas Alasfoor went on for Al Shaikh.

Abduljabbar had one last chance in the fifth and final minute of second-half stoppage time, but his shot from near the goal mouth was saved by Qatar goalkeeper Saad Alsheeb.

In yesterday’s draw between Iraq and Oman, Salah Al Yahy-aei put the Omanis ahead with a goal in the 78th minute. But the Iraqis were able to salvage a point in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time

through Hasan Abdulkareem, who scored from a penalty.

Bahrain’s match with Iraq on Friday is scheduled for an early kick-off at 1pm. It will be played at Doha’s Al Thumama Stadium. In Friday’s other game, Oman face off with Qatar at 4pm.

Bahrain are one of 16 teams in the competition. They have been divided into four groups for the preliminary round.

The top two teams in each group at the end of this stage move on to the knockout quar-ter-finals.

Ali misses second ton as Pakistan win first TestAFP | Dhaka

Abid Ali fell just shy of back-to-back centuries as Paki-

stan cruised to an eight-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first Test in Chittagong yesterday.

Ali’s 151-run stand with fel-low opener Abdullah Shafique helped bring play to an end before lunch on the final day, beating their first-innings part-nership by five.

The duo had already made 109 overnight, chasing 202.

Bangladesh had to wait un-til the 10th over of the day for their first success when Me-hidy Hasan trapped debutant Shafique lbw on 73 with a fuller delivery.

Shafique, who also scored a fifty in the first innings, fell af-ter hitting eight fours and a six.

Ali, who made 133 in Pa-kistan’s first innings, looked poised to become first Pakistani to a make a Test century pair in six years, after Misbah-ul-Haq achieved the feat against Aus-tralia in 2014.

But Taijul Islam hit him in front of the middle stump with a straighter delivery, with Pa-kistan just 31 runs from victory.

“Our thought process was to stay at the wicket and put up a partnership. I have been playing domestic cricket and performing well. That’s what I carried into this game,” said

man of the match Ali.He left the crease to a stand-

ing ovation and was also con-gratulated by Bangladeshi fielders on a splendid 148-ball innings that saw 12 boundaries.

Azhar Ali, 24 not out, finished the game at over 58.3 after back-to-back boundaries off Mehidy, with skipper Babar Azam un-beaten on 13 at the other end.

“We came back well... and that’s what Test cricket is all about,” said Babar.

Taijul finished the game with eight wickets for the hosts, which included 7-116 in the first innings.

“We lost in the first hour in the first innings and second innings as well, but credit to them, especially Afridi and Hasan Ali. They bowled really well,” said Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque.

The hosts scored 330 runs in the first innings and took a 44-run lead after bowling out Pakistan.
