& Leadership for Senior Professionals (Batch 01)

“Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character.” — Norman Schwarzkopf

Organisations, largely, have leaders with strong operational skills. However, only a few of them possess the know-how and confidence to deal with strategic problems arising on the way forward to organisational growth and transformation.

A 2015 PricewaterhouseCoopers study of 6,000 senior executives revealed that only 8% of the respondents were Strategic Leaders (strategy-business.com).

Strategic leaders challenge the prevailing view; lay the course for change; and lead with advocacy, engagement and command.

Few organisations have good leaders, but do not have a good growth strategy in place. On the other hand, some have a great strategy, but fail on the leadership front. Hence, it is imperative to have an integration of the two – STRATEGY and LEADERSHIP. Let’s recall a few instances from business history.

STRATEGY & LEADERSHIP: HITS AND MISSES

Steve Ballmer was known to be a visionary and inspiring leader. But during his tenure with Microsoft, the company missed the bus on the Mobile Applications front, as ideas for mobile applications were set aside in favour of the desktop. This laid-back strategic decision at Microsoft opened the doors for many other mobile players in the industry. This is a classic example of good leadership with a lack of strategy.

Lacking on Strategy

By 1999, Nissan was facing losses for over a decade as a result of stagnation, leadership being focused on their personal growth and resistance to change. Nissan’s lack of strong leadership and myopic corporate culture ended up creating disadvantages for the company. Then Renault infused a cash of $4 billion into Nissan, and brought Carlos Ghosn into the picture, as the CEO. Ghosn’s leadership style and his approach to change, led to the building of a healthy relationship with employees, which laid the foundation for Nissan’s turnaround.

Lacking on Leadership

In 2005, when P&G acquired Gillette, experts thought that there was not much value left from the deal. But, A G Lafley, the then CEO, turned to his expert leadership team and board of directors and ended up creating a strategy that would keep Gillette going ahead in the years to come. Gillette started creating a whole new set of assorted products that went along with shaving equipment, and also created a better supply chain. The P&G leadership and their strategy together, gave a new direction to the company or brand.

A Combination of Strategy and Leadership

“Sometimes a strategic choice can limit the benefits of very effective leadership and vision.”

“As you reach the upper tiers of a company like ICICI, or a big hospital or a community organisation, you want people below you to think strategically and to exercise leadership.”

3The more unpredictable the environment, the greater the opportunity, if one has leadership skills to capitalise on it. Paul J. H.
