Beforelistening:
IntheIELTStest,youwillhave30secondsatthebeginningofeachsectiontolookattheQuestionBookletbeforelistening.Duringthese30seconds,therearethreemainthingsyoushoulddotoimproveyourscore:
1.Readtheinstructionscarefully.TheinstructionsareusuallyinitalicsandsometimesinBOLDCAPITALLETTERS.Readtheinstructionscarefullysothatyouknowwhattodoandpredictwhatyouwillhear.Thinkaboutwhoistalking,wheretheyareandwhatthetopicis.Intheexamyouwillonlyhaveashorttimeforthis,sodoitasquicklyaspossible.
IftheinstructiontellsyoutowriteNOMORETHANTHREEWORDSforeachanswer.Thismeansthatyouareallowedtowriteone,twoorthreewordsasyouranswer.However,ifyouwritefour,ormorethanfourwords,youwillreceivenomarksforthisquestion,evenifyouransweriscorrect.Becareful!

TIP3:LearnaboutthetypesofquestionsthatyouwillgetintheIELTSlistening.Therearequitealotofdifferenttypesofquestionsandyouneedtopracticeeachtypeofquestionwhenyougetinyourlisteningtest.Knowingandhavingastrategy,atechniqueforeachtypeofquestionisimportantforyourIELTSlisteningtest.Oneofthemostdifficulttypesofquestionsisthemultiplechoice;that'softenwhereyouhaveA,B,orCoptiontochoosefrom.However,
multiplechoicecouldalsobeaverylonglist,forexample,eightoptionsandyouneedtoanswerthreequestionsrelatingtoallthoseeightoptions.
Therearealotofdifferenttypesofquestionsthatyouneedtopracticeifyouwanttohavepracticewiththesequestiontypesthenyoucangetabookofpracticetestsoryoucanvisitonlineblogswheretherearefreepracticelessonsusingmanyofthesetypesofquestions.
TIP4:Don'ttrytounderstandeverything.TheaiminIELTSforlisteningandreadingistofindanswerstoquestions.Acorrectanswerisonepoint.Allyouwantareanswers.Youarenotaimingtounderstandeverything.Youneedtolookatyourquestion,trytothinkofwhattypeofansweryou'relookingfor;listenforthatanswer.Therewillbealotofextrainformationgivenintherecordingsandyouneedtojustrelaxandfocusontheanswersthatyou'relookingfor.
TIP5:Youneedtoprepareyouranswersandquestionsquickly.Nowbeforeyoulistentotherecording,youwillhearamessageanditwillsaytoyou.Younowhavetimetopreparequestions1to5.Thatmeansyouwillhavetimetoprepareandreadquestions1,2,3,4and5.Thenyouwilllistentoitandafter,youwillhaveachancetopreparequestion6,7,8,and9.You'realwaysgiventimetopreparebutit'snotlong.Therefore,youdoneedtotrainyourselftopreparequestionsquickly.
TIP6:Answerscancomequickly,soyouneedtoprepareforthat.Theanswersdonotcomeatregularintervals.Youcouldgetsuddenlythreeanswerscomingtogether.Thatmeansyouneedtokeepyoureyeonthenextquestion.Don’tjustlookatthequestionthatyou'relookingfor.Keepyoureyeontheotherquestionscomingsoyoucanmovequicklytothenextquestionandyoudon'tlosetime.Youdon'tgetlost.Inaddition,becausetheanswerscomequickly,youdon'talwayshavetimetowritelongwords.IftheanswerisJapaneseRestaurant,youmightwanttojustmakeanote.ParticularlyiftheanswerisJapaneseRestaurant,Ijustnotelikethis“Japres”.Youwouldwritethatonyourquestionpaper,andthenwhenyoutransferyouranswerstotheanswersheet,youwouldwrite
thefullwordswhichisJapaneseRestaurant.Therefore,makingnotesisveryuseful.Youshouldalsomakenotesofpossibleanswersbecausemaybeyou'regoingtomissone.Youcanwritealloveryourquestionpaperbecausetheexaminerwillneverseeit.Makenotesonyourquestionpaper,writedowntheshortversionofthewordifyouneedto,andtransferanswerscorrectlytoyouranswersheet.

Sosuddenlyinsteadoftheanswerbeing5,itisnow5:30.Sowhenyoulistenandyouhearyouranswerobviously,youcanmakeanoteoftheanswerbutkeeplisteningbecausethatanswermightbechanged.Becarefulwiththat.Anothertypeoftrapiswhenyouhavethesamewordsinthequestionandthesamewordsintherecording.Ofcourse,peopleimmediatelythink“ohthisismyanswer”butactuallythatcouldbeatrapbecauseusuallyIELTSwilluseparaphrasingratherthanusingtheexactsamewordscompletely.Therefore,alwaysbealittlebitsuspiciouswhenyouhearallthesamewords.Ifyouwanttohavepracticewithcommontraps,thenvisitonlineblogswheretherearelotsof
practiceexerciseswiththesetypesoftrapsanditwillhelpyoutopracticeforthat.
TIP9:Repeatedanswers.Thisiswhenyou'vegotthreeorfourpeoplehavingadiscussion;andofcoursewhentheyarediscussingsomething,peoplemightsay“isthiswhatyoumean?”,“Doyoumeanthis?”Andtheanswercouldberepeatedagainandthatcanhelpyoutolocatetheanswer.
TIP10:Listeningforpluralnouns.IELTSisalisteningtestandtheyknowthatmanyforeignlanguagespeakersstruggletohearplurals,soyouneedtopayattentionto“doesthatwordhavean“S”ontheendornot?”Ifyouhaveasentencecompletion,sometimesyoucanseeinthegrammarthatyouneedapluralanswer.Therefore,justtakealook,butkeepyourearsopenforthoseplurals.
Therearethreemainstrategiesthathelpyouimproveyourlisteningforplurals.
Strategy1:knowyouruncountablenounsbecausetheydonothavethe“S”ontheend(e.g.advice,information,equipment,milk,water,happiness,furniture).
Strategy2:knowyourvocabularyandspelling,forexample,“grassroots”.Italwayshasan“S”thatishowthewordiswritten.Obviously,thisisanEnglishlanguagetestandthisistestingyourvocabulary.
