WELCOME Chief Executive, ICC

Geoff Allardice Chief Executive, ICC

On behalf of the International Cricket Council (ICC), it is an honour to welcome you to the 14th edition of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, whether you are in attendance in the West Indies or following virtually from afar.

This is the first time that the West Indies has hosted a tournament that is so close to the hearts of all of us at the ICC, and is considered a very important event on our calendar. With 16 teams playing 48 games over 23 days of competition, the tournament provides players with unrivalled experience of global events and a real flavour of international cricket at senior level. Cricket fans around the world will enjoy watching the game’s future stars in a tournament with a real Caribbean flavour. We are fortunate to have four excellent host countries, with Antigua & Barbuda, Guyana, Saint Kitts & Nevis and Trinidad & Tobago ready to showcase World Cup cricket. A host of past and present stars have come through this system: several of the world’s best current players have figured in past ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cups, including Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson. The West Indies’ own Jayden Seales, who this year became the youngest West Indies bowler to take a five-wicket Test match haul, was in the Team of the Tournament for the most recent edition in 2020, and clearly demonstrates the calibre of cricketers we can expect to see during the event. Our hosts will be looking to win the trophy for the second time, having lifted it in Bangladesh in 2016 under the captaincy of Shimron Hetmyer. But they’ll have to come out ahead of current holders Bangladesh, as well as Afghanistan, Australia, Canada, England, India, Ireland, Pakistan, PNG, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, UAE, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

On behalf of the ICC, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cricket West Indies, its staff, ground authorities and volunteers in helping us to organise this event. I would also like to thank our commercial and broadcast partners for their support in making our events so special and taking them to the widest possible audience. A word of appreciation is likewise due to my colleagues at the ICC, who have worked so hard in preparation for this event. The past two years have been extremely difficult for the entire cricket community due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and delivering events takes a great deal of collaboration and dedication. I would also like to thank all members of the media for your continued support of this event, whether you’re here in person or following from your respective countries around the world – the coverage you drive is crucial to the future success of the game. You can find editorial material, imagery and video on the ICC’s Online Media Zone in the run-up to and throughout the event, and I hope you will find it useful in delivering your coverage. Should you need anything else, please do not hesitate to contact the media team. I wish you all a thoroughly enjoyable event as we all look to spot the superstars of the future.

WELCOME Tournament Director

Fawwaz Baksh Tournament Director

Welcome to the ICC Under 19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2022! It’s my honour to greet all 16 teams, support and technical staff, families and fans as Cricket West Indies hosts its fourth Cricket World Cup in 15 years.

We are happy to have the global cricketing fraternity on our sun-soaked shores again – but this time, it will be a new experience as it’s the game’s young guns who will be aweing us with their on-field exploits. May I wish them all the best. The bat-and-ball banquet before us is simply sumptuous: 16 teams battling in 48 matches across 23 days of riveting competition, with the winners ultimately being crowned champions on February 5 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium – surely a life-long memory for whichever team triumphs. Starting with first-round matches in Guyana and St Kitts & Nevis, before moving to Trinidad & Tobago, and then culminating in Antigua & Barbuda, this tournament will unfold across nine venues: a combination of cricketing meccas blended with community clubs such as Everest Cricket Club in Guyana and Conaree Cricket Center in St Kitts. It will give boys and girls in the four host nations the opportunity to watch young men – not much older than them – showing discipline, teamwork, fair play, resilience and other admirable attributes. Such inspiration, spurring our youth to aspire to global excellence, even if not in cricket – plus having 21 world-class cricket facilities – will be two priceless legacies for our region.

We will also get a glimpse of those who are likely to rise to prominence. Virat Kohli, Shoaib Malik, Kane Richardson, Chris Gayle, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph are among those household cricketing names who were minted through the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, with Hetmyer captaining the West Indies to glory in 2016. We wait to see the blossoming talents who will catch our eyes as Trinidad & Tobago’s Jayden Seales did in South Africa in 2020. Despite the unprecedented times in which we are living and the heightened protocols for this event, we hope our guests will get a taste of West Indian life, and indeed of how we play and revel in our cricket – the passion, the culture and the intensity, both within and beyond the boundary. It’s a unique flavour that’s not to be missed! As our tournament tagline aptly declares, you’ve got to ‘BE THERE!’ I’ll be looking for YOU – don’t disappoint me.

A scenic venue featuring grass banks, nestled at the foot of hills on the eastern side of the island close to the international airport, Coolidge Cricket Ground is the new ‘home of West Indies cricket’, hosting high-performance programmes and training camps for regional squads.

Coolidge hosted its first official men’s international match in March 2021 when the West Indies, the world champions, played against Sri Lanka in the CG Insurance T20I Series. The impact was immediate as West Indies captain Kieron Pollard set the ground ablaze with a monumental feat, smashing six sixes in an over – the third man to achieve this in an international match.

Women’s international cricket has featured here on several occasions. Coolidge hosted warm-up matches for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2018. It has also been the venue for group matches and the finals of the CG Insurance Super50 tournament.

This venue is named in honour of one of the greatest cricketers of all time and Antigua’s National Hero, Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards. It was completed in 2006 and hosted its first match during the second round of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2007. It has become the new home of cricket in Antigua, replacing the historic Antigua Recreation Ground. Dominated by the North Stand – which carries seating depicting the national flag – and the five-storey South Stand, the stadium also features grass terraces on either side of the field to provide varied viewing experiences.

In 2015, after knighthoods were bestowed on Sir Curtly Ambrose and Sir Andy Roberts, the North and South ends were renamed respectively in tribute to these two great fast bowlers. The venue was chosen to host the semi-finals and final of the first ever standalone ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, with record crowds attending exciting matches that featured England, India, West Indies and champions Australia.

Built to host matches in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2007, this venue became Guyana’s third international venue after Bourda in the capital, Georgetown, and Albion Community Centre in Berbice. In the first match ever played at Providence, history was made by Lasith Malinga, who took four wickets in four balls for Sri Lanka against South Africa.

Located on the east bank of the Demerara River and about six miles south of Georgetown, the stadium has three major stands and a grass mound, offering a potential capacity of nearly 15,000. Most of the international fixtures have been One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals. It has hosted matches in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2007, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2010 and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2018.

Providence has also staged other sports such as football, rugby sevens, the 2010 Central American & Caribbean Games, plus local athletics. The venue’s multi-purpose nature has seen it being used for concerts, most famously in 2019 with reggae artiste Buju Banton on his Caribbean tour.

Conaree Cricket Center is located one mile east of Basseterre and is bordered by the Robert L Bradshaw International Airport and the National Heroes Park. The picturesque village of Conaree shares its name with the ground, which has been enhanced specifically for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2022.

The Center came to life in 2007 as a practice ground for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Since then, it has staged the CWI Super50 and the regional U19 competition. The 2021 Heroes CPL also used the venue for net sessions, featuring stars like DJ Bravo, Faf Du Plessis, Chris Gayle, Shoaib Malik, Glen Phillips, Kieran Pollard and Imran Tahir.

Thanks to this ground’s development, St Kitts can boast of having two first-class venues within a two-mile radius, given the Center’s closeness to Warner Park in Basseterre.

Warner Park Sporting Complex was redeveloped to host matches in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2007. The venue was popular with players and fans due to its festive atmosphere and intimate feel. Three years later, hosted the entire first round of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2010.

It is famous for record performances. In the Men’s World Cup first round, Herschelle Gibbs of South Africa became the first man to hit six sixes in an over in ODIs against the Netherlands. In 2010, West Indies’ batter Deandra Dottin scored a record century against South Africa – the first woman to achieve this in a T20 International. The venue hosted its first international match in 2006 when Rahul Dravid’s India team played Brian Lara’s West Indies in an ODI series. The highlight was a fantastic match-winning century from Ramnaresh Sarwan.

The complex also consists of the Len Harris Cricket Academy, named in honour of the former Leeward Islands player. The western section is home to a 3,500-seat football stadium, while the netball courts are to the north. Apart from sporting events, Warner Park has been used for cultural and musical shows, including the world-famous St Kitts Music Festival.

Nestled in the foothills of the Northern Range of Trinidad & Tobago, this venue was designed and constructed consistent with international standards. It is a multi-purpose, multi-sport facility used by communities, individuals, clubs and sporting associations for the conduct of training and hosting of sport events.

The complex was opened in March 2019 by the Prime Minister The Honourable Dr Keith Rowley, with the declared intent that by having this facility in the heart of the community, it would serve as inspiration for the development of national athletes from the surrounding areas. Due to the impact of the global pandemic, the new facility has only hosted one season of domestic cricket but has served as a training facility for several CPL teams, along with the Trinidad & Tobago Red Force.

The facility serves as the home for the Merryboys Cricket Club, one of the country’s most decorated domestic cricket teams. It houses the following services/amenities: cricket/football field, pavilion seating (General and VIP) in excess of 2,000 patrons, cricket practice nets, concession booths, VIP Lounge, facilities for home and away teams, outfitted spaces for administrative staff, a gym, and parking for 76 vehicles plus team buses. The Queen’s Park Oval is one of the oldest and most iconic venues in the West Indies. The Queen’s Park Club, which has its home at the Oval, has been in existence since 1896 and hosted its first Test match in 1930. A seating capacity of close to 20,000 for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2007 made it the largest Caribbean ground. The famous backdrop of the northern hills enhances its reputation as one of world cricket’s most scenic grounds.

The presence of the Trini Posse – where every day’s play is like Carnival – ensures a non-stop party atmosphere in that section of the ground. The structures at the Oval include the Learie Constantine Stand, named in honour of the legendary all-rounder and statesman. The Brian Lara Pavilion is a tribute to the stellar career of one of the greatest cricketers ever. The Jeffrey Stollmeyer Stand and the Gerry Gomez Media Centre pay homage to two of the leading pioneers and administrators in West Indies cricket history.

Queen’s Park Oval is located on Tragarete Road in the heart of the capital, Port-of-Spain, close to popular areas such as St James and Ariapita Avenue. One of the most memorable moments at the venue was the West Indies dismissing England for 46 runs to win a Test match in 1994. Another epic milestone was the fantastic figures of 9-95 by spinner Jack Noriega against India in 1971 – the best bowling figures in West Indies Test history.
