DAY 1. Parnell looked a trifle jaded after the disappointment of the Jeff Crowe Final the previous Sunday. And the Papatoe batsment took advantage – 55 for the first wicket then 120 without further loss. We were patient, however, and our pace attack was rewarded with a major collapse in the middle order. Propects of a total less that 200 were then dashed by Istead and their 261 looked a good total, particularly as neither Ollie Pringle nor Brad Rodden were available for Day 2. Worse still – Flynn McGregor-Sumpter was out in the 2nd over. Ben Rae and Ollie Pringle then, a little nervously, saw us through to stumps – 22/1.

DAY 2. First ball - Ben Rae, hit on the pads, raucous and prolonged appeal, umpire hesitant, finally given out - 22/2. A real setback and though we had a buffer of 14 points over 2nd placed Takapuna, a loss here could destroy our chances of taking the Championship.

Ben Rainger joined Fanie (now in for Ollie Pringle) who batted forcefully till stumped at 85. Acting Captain Andy, with Ben, put a stop to any nonsence and played exceedingly well to take the game away from Papatoetoe. Half centuries for each came up, the total reached 200 until Ben, surprisingly, lost his wicket with the total 216. Andy carried on but, likewise, he was dismissed 8 short of a well deserved ton. In retrospect, both should have scored 100s but they did make the game safe for us. The lead came up soon after and then a scurry for additional bonus points and good buffer against Takapuna and Cornwall on the Points Table.

Over the boundary for 6! Fanie wrested the initiative from Papatoetoe – 44 off 42 balls including 5 fours and two 6s

Ben Rainger – an outstanding 69 off 156 ball with 6 fours Andy – a brilliant “captain’s knock” – 92 off 120 balls 12 fours , 4 sixes

HOPEFULLY WE CAN MAINTAIN, EVEN INCREASE, THIS LEAD AND BRING HOME THE HEDLEY HOWARTH TROPHY COME DOWN TO SHORE ROAD [PLENTY OF OPEN SPACE AND FRESH AIR] AND ENJOY THIS GAME

For Howick Pak, and Papatoetoe (playing Cornwall – 2 plays 7), too, much depends on this final round – one will be relegated. And relegation can significantly affect sponsorships and playing strength – promising youngsters, disregarding loyalty, may change to a “top tier” club. And which club will be promoted …………………………..? RESULT: Match Drawn – 1st Innings points to Parnell Playing the Grade leader, Parnell, quite obviously, battled to put on 165 in their 1st innings. Thanks go very largely to Giacomo and Dean followed by Eddie who got some return out of the lower order. Cornwall started very much better – 70 for the 1st wicket off 20 overs. But Harry, with his leggies, ripped their innings apart and gave us a substantial 1st innings lead. Will, Quin and Dean then got us to 146/5 and a declaration left Cornwall almost 200 to chase. Whilst Cornwall gave it a bit of a go, wickets fell but only 5. In the end there was no outright either way and the match ended in a draw. Most importantly, we gained 13 points (to go into 2nd place) and Cornwall only 3 - see Points Table below: Points after Round 6, are

1. Cornwall 96 5. Suburbs NL 54 2. Parnell 95 6. East Coast Bays 53 3. Eden Roskill 91 7. Kumeu 38 4. North Shore 69 8. Papatoetoe 38

Post Christmas T20

Round 3. 14 March. PARNELL vs TAKAPUNA RESULT: Parnell lost by default

It should be noted that in recent weeks we have lost three of our top girls to southern universities. That, along with school camps, has left us with no alterative but to forfeit this game. On the plus side, vacancies in our Women’s Premier side has given Reserve regulars Kate Irwin and Renee MacMillan early opportunities to demonstrate their talents at a higher level. Kate, with her 50* on Premier debut 2 weeks ago, and Renee, taking 5/14 for our Prems last Saturday, have taken up the challenge superbly!

Men’s Senior Grades

Senior 4th Grade: Round 5. 7 & 14 March PARNELL THIRDS vs PAPATOETOE at Papatoetoe Rec. 2.

PARNELL 285/10 (56.4) Sam Jenkin 62 (104),Rudi Bisschoff 52 (56), Callum McCarthy 65 (50) PAPATOETOE 145/10 (45.2) K Yadav 33 (75), Simon Walker 3/44 (14o 3m), Ewen Anderson 0/15 (4) Rudi Bisshoff 2/25 (8o 2m), Kelly Haldane-Lunow 0/5 (4), Cam Rope 2/21 (7o 2m), Harman Minhas 1/12 (2), Mehul Cchagan 2/12 (6o 3m) & following on 309 dec. (51.1) M Bajaj 79 (61), R Rajagopal 69* (55), R Saini 52* (62), Simon Walker 3/49 (10o 2m), Will Wild 1/50 (7o 1m), Mehul Chhagan 1/57 (7), PARNELL 156/5 (20) Eddie Commons 54* (54), Luke O’Toole 47 (28), Sam Jenkin 35 (25)

RESULT: MATCH DRAWN, 1st Innings Points to Parnell Must have been a great game – Papatoetoe, after following on, set us 170 for an outright win. A great chase – we opened with Matt James and Eddie Commons. Matt departed 17 but Eddie played the rock and, whilst Rudi got a first baller, Luke and then Sam got cracking. Their dismissals effectively ended our chances but it was an impressive effort to get just 14 runs short. Our 1st innings set us up marvelously – well done Sam Jenkin (Sam, welcome back to the fold – a stalwart from Junior days), Rudi and Callum! Then a great effort to bowl Papatoetoe out for 145. They retaliated in their second knock on following on. Only Simon Walker, again, gaining much traction with the ball. Their declaration didn’t give us much chance but we did well when taking up the challenge.

Senior 7th Grade: Round 6. 7 & 14 March PARNELL FOURTHS/PRUNES vs AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY

RESULT: Parnell won by default

Presidents’ Grade Bowl: Round 3. 14 March PARNELL vs EAST COAST BAYS at Metro Park, Millwater.

PARNELL 237/7 (35) EAST COAST BAYS 169/10 (33)

RESULT: Parnell won by 68 runs

SKIPPER CHRIS LAYCOCK REPORTS: It was almost a team tour, all the way out to Metro Park in Millwater to meet ECB for a desperate scramble up off the bottom of the table. The team list looked strong for the first time this season with the return of Flash from injury, both fast bowlers available and a late season debut from Venu (former Parnell Prem Reserve skipper and Board Member) The pitch inspection had our top order batsmen all pointing at each other and wondering what the Metro Park groundsman was doing for a living now? I nicked one early on and left Dapper to bash his way to a lively 40 on a fragile hamstring. In came Venu who was adjusting nicely to the mysteries of Pressie bowling before he got fired LBW for 18. Flash and Sam set about steadying the ship and we were 100/3 at drinks. Flash (50 from 76) fed Sam plenty of strike as he played a beautifully paced innings of 79 from 65 balls, their 110 run stand for the fourth wicket set up our best total this season, we finished 237/7. Gareth got the campaign for 19 wickets underway in his first over, helped by a sharp diving catch from Venu with the gloves on. Evan gave it the usual 100% taking 1-29 from his 7 overs and Robbo whilst a little rusty from injury recovery was accurate on a helpful wicket, taking 1-26-7. John and Gormo took 2 wickets each from their 6 over spells and low and behold 5am Whiteman (also in recovery mode) skittled out 3 unsuspecting Coasters over the course of his 4 overs to see us home 68 glorious runs clear!! Whilst we held our catches and batted and bowled really well we should have practiced our elbow bumps we looked a little bit awkward in that department. Well played boys, a well deserved win.

Juniors – JT Sparling Super Series Finals’ Day – Sunday, 15 March

The JT Sparling Tournaments are competed for by Auckland University, Cornwall, Grafton United, Howick Pakuranga and Parnell Cricket Clubs. Set up only about 3 seasons ago the Tournaments cover most of the Primary/Intermediate school ages. Most importantly, they give opportunities to boys and girls to compete with their peers at a time when PC dictates are cutting back on competitive sport in many codes – rugby, hockey and , also, cricket. Last Sunday your Editor wandered around Thomas Bloodworth and Cornwall Parks and witnessed some great cricket, exciting games and, above all the sheer enjoyment of all the boys and girls taking up challenges and testing their skills! The smiles on the youngsters’ faces tell it all!!

Year 4A Boys - the Parnell winning Team

YEAR 4A TEAM MANAGER CRAIG CUNNINGHAM REPORTS: The Year 4 A reps had a convincing win over arch rivals University in the final of the JT Sparling series on Sunday. Having been unbeaten all season we were expecting University to come with their A game. Parnell’s bowling was super tight and fielding was on point in both innings. Being set 95 to win Parnell were dominant with the bat and did it comfortably in the end with 118. This is a true reflection of team spirit within these lads and a well-deserved victory.

John Sparling with Nick Butler and Jeremy Boucher, Junior Chairmen of Cornwall and Parnell CCs:

John Sparling

John Sparling attended Auckland Grammar School and was the outstanding sportsman and athlete of his day. Captain of Cricket, played 1st XV rugby and excelled at athletics. An off spinner and middle order batsman, John played for University CC (it was the only Auckland university in those days) and was selected for the Auckland Plunket Shield team making his 1st Class debut in 1956/57. At 19 he was chosen for New Zealand’s 1958 tour of England. England were at their strongest – had won the Ashes in 1953 and defended them successfully in 54/55 (speed – Tyson and Statham)) and 56 (spin – Laker 49 wickets and Lock). They beat South Africa home and away 55 and 56/57 and West Indies in 57 – England were well nigh invincible! Added to that, 1958 was the wettest English summer on record! New Zealand didn’t do at all well but John was one of the few successes. He scored 513 runs on tour including a Test 50 and took 38 wickets. Altogether he played 11 Tests and toured South Africa with NZ in 61/62. John captained Auckland for many seasons – 51 games in all – one of Auckland’s most successful eras winning the Plunket Shield twice. He retired from 1st Class cricket at the end of the 70/71 Season having scored 4606 at 24.37 and taken 318 wickets at 22.71. He hit 2 centuries, highest being 105 vs Canterbury in 59/60, a game in which he also took 7/98. John recently retired from the Law, and is now a Life Member and Patron of both Auckland Cricket and Auckland University CC. He is often seen at Colin Maiden Park supporting Auckland University but, as he has lived many years in Orakei Road, his two lads played junior cricket at Parnell. For recreation, John can also be found kayaking in Hobson Bay. Finally, congratulations to Cornwall on winning the overall series just as they have the previous two seasons. Their dominance comes particularly in the number of girls teams that they field. The JT Sparling Super Series is a wonderful Tournament and well done Cornwall on your very successful hosting.

So Endeth the Season

The Hedley Howarth Trophy

The 2019/20 has just come to a premature close due to Covid 19. Looking back we can rejoice in having had sensationally good cricketing weather, some tremendous club cricket for players of all ages and, apart from two sorties across in Australia, the Black Caps have been sensational at both ODIs and Tests. Final Grade placings are still to be confirmed by Auckland Cricket but, with 101 points to Cornwall’s 81, we must be assured of being awarded the Hedley Howarth Trophy - for the Men’s Premier Grade Two Day Major Championship. Congratulations to Captain Brad Rodden, Head Coach Ian West and the team – an outstanding achievement! Congratulations to Lockie Ferguson who bowled so brilliantly in the ICC CWC 19 and, at Perth, made his Test debut – just a shame that his season was curtailed by the injury sustained in that game. Also to Mark Chapman, a century for NZ A vs India A and two for Auckland Aces – 143 and 146 vs Norther Districts. Ben Horne – hit his maiden 1st Class century and taken 100 dismissals. There have been many, many other achievements by all ages on and off the field – I repeat, a wonderful season. Last, but most certainly not least, farewell to Phil Horne, our Director of Cricket the past three seasons. Nothing was ever too much trouble to Phil – Phil you will be hugely missed by us all. We wish you, and Lynne, all the very best in your retirement!

The Core and the Cricketer.

It is a great pleasure and privilege working as a Chiropractor with people of all ages. One particular passion of mine

is sport and I really enjoy working with people who are also passionate about their sport. It is such a great way to

express our bodies potential, not to mention the minds. This summer we once again are the proud sponsors for the

Men’s Parnell Premier Cricket team and for the first time the Women’s Premier Team.

In our care of these teams we do this on performance basis not just an injury treatment basis. What this means is

the players are seen regularly each week through the season to have their spine and nervous system assessed. Our

objective is to ensure their brains are communicating effectively to their bodies by an efficient nervous system. If

there is any interference at the spinal level, the brains messages are distorted as it tries to get its communication

from brain to body and the body back to the brain. A common yet serious and usually asymptomatic problem occurs

called a Vertebral Subluxation that jeopardises this signalling pathway. In chiropractic we use a technique called an

Adjustment to correct this.

Three ways in particular how Chiropractic care helps our cricketers perform have been validated through published

Research.

1. Switching on of the core muscles prevent low back and extremity injuries.

2. Joint position sense ( knowing where your limbs are)

3. Muscle fatigue

This article will focus on the core.

Muscles deep in the abdomen are part of your core stabilising system, and they need to be ‘turned on’ before you

lift your arms, so that you remain stable. This should happen very fast and without your conscious awareness.

This is called ‘feed-forward’ activation, because it is pre-planned by the central nervous system. It ensures that

movement of the body is balanced, so that no injury takes place.

The researchers found that in a group of 90 healthy students who were Cricketers, 17 of them could not pre-activate

their abdominal muscles before they moved their arms. That meant they were more prone to injury. Six months

later, the researchers tested 13 of the affected students again, and found that they still couldn’t do it.

So what was going on with these students? To find out, they were given chiropractic assessments, and it was

discovered that they all had tightness and restriction of joints in their pelvis. They were subluxated.

And guess what? After Chiropractic adjustments’, there was an almost 40% improvement in their ability to pre-

activate their core abdominal muscles. That’s pretty phenomenal!

This study is really important because it has big implications. These students had no existing pain at all. But scientists

think that poor control of the core muscles may be the cause of people developing pain or sustaining an injury in the

future.

We know that people who have low back pain have delayed activation of their core abdominal muscles when

performing various movements. (Just think how one sided bowling is and batting too for that matter). We also know

that their brains are much less aware of what is going on in their lower backs.

This means that their brains are not receiving or processing accurate information from the small muscles close to

their spine, so their brains have to guess what is going on, and therefore may not be controlling the lower back in an

ideal way, which can damage the back further.

This is why chiropractic care is important. It can restore proper communication between your brain and your body,

so your brain knows accurately what is going on, and can control your whole body in the best way possible.

This is just one reason why we check the teams regularly through the season and not just wait for injuries to occur

like the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. It is hard to be a great cricketer when you are not on the park!

Call the practice today if you would like to be assessed to get the most out of your season and your kids season.
