But what is a profit and loss statement? It is an important tool in an organization to measure the day-to-day operations. There are basically three components: First there is the income section. Second, the cost of goods/sales section. Then the third section is the expenses. Ultimately what each of the subsidiaries needs to achieve is to increase their income and reduce the cost of goods/sales and expenses where possible. However, this may not be so simple. But let’s break it down to each of the sections. For income to increase, there should be a review of the current revenue stream to see if we can upsell any of the products or services that we offer. Then we have to look at the cost of goods sold. For us to improve this, we need to ensure we review the pricing from the suppliers to get the best price they have to offer and minimise our costs. Finally, we have to make sure that our expenses are all in check. We have to optimize our resources. Hence, that’s the reason why we have the Business Transformation Plans (BTP) and Business Improvement Plans (BIP) in place to help us improve profit. Indeed, the key to anchoring any transformation in an

organization is to tie it to the profit and loss statements

(P&L). But what is a profit and loss statement? It is an

important tool in an organization to measure the day-to-day

operations.

There are basically three components: First there is the

Green Gown International Awards

Like most milestones in 2021, the 13th International Islamic College (IIC) Virtual Convocation

Ceremony was undoubtedly one to remember. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the public

health guidelines around physical distancing, this year’s convocation will be a virtual event that is

going live on October 16, with over 900 people expected to tune in. Despite the challenges of

putting together a digital event of this size – and a first for IIC – the event will give graduates the

recognition they deserved.

To maintain the celebratory spirit and to honour the 2021 graduates, the virtual ceremony will

include pre-recorded speeches from YAB Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad, Minister of Higher Education

and IIC leadership, as well as personal video messages from lecturers, celebrities, and alumni.

The International Green Gown Awards celebrate the exceptional sustainability initiatives being

undertaken by universities and colleges across the world and are supported by United Nations

Environment, Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), L’Agence universitaire de la

Francophonie (AUF), The Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) and International

Association of Universities (IAU).

For the 2020 International Green Gown Awards, four IIUM sustainability initiatives were listed as the

Finalists for the awards. The award ceremony was conducted online on the 7th July 2021 at the UN

High-Level Political Forum. UNGS 1201 – HyFlex (Hybrid Flexible) Transformative Learning for Edu-

Action with Soul was announced as Highly Commended Initiative in the New Generation Learning

and Skills category.

UNGS 1201 is a university-wide project that serves as a transformative platform for post-Covid

assessment and delivered through a hybrid model with flexibility to fit the learners.

so we have added a special touch from lecturers and celebrities throughout the ceremony,” says Siti Nur’ain, Director of 13th IIC Virtual Convocation Ceremony.

The convocation secretariat, Nur Safwati added, “We wanted to acknowledge that although we couldn’t celebrate in person, this day is still all about the graduates.

We’re all so far away from each other now. Some graduates are across the country and I think they need this extra recognition.”

In collaboration with MOSAIIC Agency, the convocation team recruited a videographer to film the speeches and edit the footage so that the online event had a

seamless and professional feel. “We needed to have a different vision with a virtual event,” says Ain. “We watched so many other virtual convocations online to get

a sense of how to do this, but every College or University did something different. There was no standard because everyone had to pivot quickly.”

Wan Mohd Ridzuan, Assistant Manager of MOSAIIC Agency, who worked closely with the professional videographer on the event footage, was happy to see

schools/centre showing their creative side in the video messages. “I loved working with the schools/centre on their videos because it was the perfect way to

personalize the event, and it brought out their creative side,” says Ridzuan. “They put so much thought into it.”

In the end, some schools/centre recorded messages from their homes while others did it from their offices. Some leadership speeches were formal, while others

were casual. Despite some hiccups along the way, the message throughout the virtual convocation ceremony will always be consistent: we are so proud of IIC’s class

of 2021!

Ir. Malek Pisol Md. Saad became the Chairman of Daya

Bersih Sdn. Bhd. in September 2020 after a three-year

stint as Daya Bersih director since 2017. He graduated

with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Hons.) in

1992 and Master of Science Engineering (Electrical)

from the University of Malaya in 1995 and has since

been involved in many major engineering

infrastructure projects such as Sepang International

Formula One Racing Circuit (SIC), and sustainable

energy projects in Kuala Lumpur.

When asked about his role as the chairman, Ir. Malek

said that his duties involve identifying suitable

business opportunities for the company and

facilitating the arrangements of conversion of the

opportunities into a real enterprise. By offering his

point of view as an engineer, Daya Bersih has the

invaluable information in its hand to manoeuvre the

tricky side of infrastructure businesses.

These two years has been intense for Daya Bersih. The

unprecedented pandemic has impacted the company

in all aspects imaginable, from revenue slow down,

daily operation difficulties, to the health and well-

being struggles of the its team members. Despite all

that Ir. Malek is optimistic that Daya Bersih will

conquer the future by applying changes in Daya

Bersih’s ways of doing business.

He admits, Daya Bersih has been fortunate to survive

by relying on their internal businesses with IIUM,

whereas other companies out there have had to close

their doors and sent home their staff empty handed

because their businesses were unable to sustain in the

constant devastation caused by the pandemic.

However, he believes that Daya Bersih should not rest

on their laurels, as nothing lasts forever. Daya Bersih

should seriously embark on marketing their services to

the external businesses to offset their dependency on

the internal business.

Ir. Malek adds that revenue from external business will

prepare the company for the volatile and

unpredictable future that lies in front of us. Daya

Bersih must be ready to face any obstacle, be it in the

form of world economy, social, political and

environmental occurrences that may not always be

positive. With FMS as the core business, Ir. Malik

believes that diversification of services and products

will separate Daya Bersih from the flock.

Aside from the daunting pandemic, the world is

struggling with the anxiety for the impending ecology

system collapse. Consequently, new trends emerged,

along with chanted buzzwords such as sustainability,

conservationist attitude, green-collar and climate

wokeness. Ir. Malek thinks, Daya Bersih can capitalize

on this trend by spearheading their diversification

efforts towards sustainable technologies.

In line with their own Green Initiatives, Daya Bersih

should fortify their previous and current

environmentally conscious efforts such as energy

efficiency, solar farming, and recycling into marketable

packages, such that the products can be

commercialized into the external markets. Besides

making profit, the effort will help the community

conserve the ecology system and reduce financial loss

"A great teamwork promises a positive work environment."

Fundamentally, the change must start from within the

organization itself. Ir. Malek believes that discipline is

an integral part of the change, and each staff must play

their part by instilling work ethics and discipline within

themselves. Though the exercise seems simple, the

outcome will reflect in their fate in the future. Since Ir.

Malek is against retrenchment, if the situation doesn’t

turn around, the staff will have to take pay cuts if

necessary. However, Daya Bersih will try its very best

to avoid reaching that ultimatum.

Ir. Malek concludes that to achieve greatness, an

organization must work together. Distributing

workload and disseminating information through

thorough communication will reduce workplace

confusion and stress. A great teamwork promises a

positive work environment, which is needed to

conquer any adversity hurtling towards us. He hopes

Daya Bersih will come out stronger than ever and

succeed in all the endeavours they put their effort

into.

Programme For Students To Polish Their Talents and Skills

Hebat Baca Bahasa Programe

IIUM Educare has launched a programme specifically

for learning Bahasa Malaysia that focuses on the

knowledge and skills to read in Bahasa Malaysia. The

programme is targeted at two categories, namely,

sponsorship and also to the community who are

interested in registering their children for the

programme. This programme is inspired for the

purpose of providing services to children who need

additional learning to hone their knowledge and ability

to read fluently and well.

The Covid-19 pandemic affects all levels of society in

Malaysia, young and old alike. Even children in

kindergartens and primary school students are not

spared. The Movement Control Order has necessitated

study online but unfortunately some of them find

virtual learning difficult due to the large group involved.

They are not able to focus on learning and this has

A Chance to Improve Knowledge and Skills to Read in Bahasa Malaysia

Speaking up in public is not an easy task, especially when it involves

a huge audience. For most people, the feeling of nervousness and

fear equates the number of people attending the talk. This is one of

the reasons why public speaking at schools are organized. Students

will greatly benefit from the training and exposure given to help

them polish their talent and skills.

Realizing the pressing need for training in public speaking, IISMS

students are given early exposure to ensure that this skill can be

grasped and cultivated throughout their schooling years. One of the

initiatives made is to send students to selected events and

programmes. Events selected vary in objectives and themes, but mostly revolve around Islamic values, international collaboration and academic related

programmes. `

One of the talents who has been actively involved in such programmes is Fareeha Tabassum from Grade 11. Her ability to articulate facts and deliver presentations

in a calm manner has made her to be a versatile speaker with her own style. One of the events participated was the ‘Come and Speak Hour Podcast’ which was

organized by Nurul Fikri Boarding School Serang Banten-Indonesia. Fareeha was invited for two series of the podcast to share her thoughts on the topic “Role of

Islamic Students for the World”. The podcast was conducted to invite Muslim students discuss and exchange ideas on how they can contribute for the betterment

of the world, and at the same time spread the message of peace and love to the world. This initiative was taken with the hope that Muslim students are aware

that their responsibility is more than just achieving academic related goals.

It is hoped that more students will volunteer to participate in such programmes to hone their oral presentation skills. Training and drills given at school should

be tested in the real world in order to identify one’s weaknesses and strengths.

Rule Three, in the case of an accident, the employee is duly expected to write a one-page report. The format is the same as the one I used to write stories in kindergarten.

The picture on the top page and the storyline below it, but of course, it will have your supervisor, GM and your signatures on the top right corner. Then the personal

details are concealed, and the report is shared around the company during the monthly meeting. All incidents are discussed, what should be done to prevent them, and

lessons are to be learned. Somehow everybody knew… and learned from them.

These are the practices, and now looking back, the record shows I took all the blows, and did it the Toyota way. I realize they are making the employees as stakeholders

play the role model for a good driver and contribute to the safe Toyota vehicle image. And if we look at Toyota vision statement, we can see the part attributed to it.

I once worked for Toyota in Toyota City, Japan, where if you head butt any stranger, you can be sure that one of the stranger’s family

members is related to the Toyota business. This story was my unique experience there; it showed how Toyota makes their employees

contribute towards strengthening the Toyota image.

Counselling education and practicum play a vital role in producing future quality counsellors. Hence, the IIUM Consultancy through IIUM Centre of Continuing Education Sdn. Bhd. always ensure that the training of counsellors is equipped with proper input in the field of counselling either in theory or practical. One of the graduation requirements for students of Bachelor of Education (GUIDE) is practicum and internship. During the practicum and internship, the student will be supervised by IIUM Centre of Continuing Education Sdn. Bhd. and qualified supervisor. The students are supervised by qualified supervisors from Kulliyyah of Education (KOED), Assist. Prof. Dr. Siti Kholijah Kassim, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ssekamanya Siraje Abdallah and Assist. Prof. Dr. Salmi Ahmad Sudan. This programme is required for certified and licensed counselling professionals. This undergraduate student is a seasoned professional who will serve students from secondary schools as an On-Site Supervisor and meet with their potential client for a minimum one (1) hour per week for individual supervision. The session of counselling relates to a certain aspect of preparing the student for Practicum and/or Internship; careful consideration and belief that they have prepared adequately for a career in counselling.

On 5th and 6th October 2021, the Counselling Internship Site by students from the batch of Cohort Gombak, Bachelor of Education (GUIDE) have successfully undergone the Counselling session via Google Meet. There were good interactions between the future counsellor and the client. Practicum training has proven to help counsellors improve their skills and gain more experience in order to handle better counselling sessions and become good counsellors.

Consequently, this session will be able to produce trained counsellors who comply with the aspiration of the counselling profession that is already recognized as professional service.

The demand for hand sanitizers has been increasing since 2020 due to the outbreak of the COVID19 virus. Apart from hospitals, clinics and pharmacies, other premises such as supermarkets, retailers, schools, offices, are also required to provide hand sanitizer. Many individuals also prefer to carry with them their own hand sanitizers. Though hand sanitizers are useful in preventing the spread of viruses/germs, its frequent use may cause side effects for some skin types such as itchiness, irritation, and dryness. We note that many consumers complain about developing sensitive skin, dermatitis or eczema due to the frequent use of hand sanitizers which may contain harsh chemicals.

Our R&D is currently developing an improved hand sanitizing formula that is suitable for sensitive skin, much more economical, affordable, and easy to bring anywhere. We will ensure that the product brand awareness reaches everyone, so they know where to access this product whenever they need it. We will continue to improve our product quality, safety, and efficacy to serve the community.

In the month of September 2021, we invited our Physiotherapist for a Facebook Live

session on the topics of ‘Kecederaan Ligament Anterior Lutut’ and Cervical Spondylosis.

Puan Shafiqah shared some information on the right way to perform exercises to

improve the condition of knee pain and cervical spondylosis. Anterior cruciate ligament

(ACL) injury most commonly occurs during sports that involve sudden stops or changes

in direction, jumping and landing — such as soccer, basketball, football and downhill

skiing with several symptoms such as a loud pop or a popping sensation in the knee,

severe pain and inability to continue activity, rapid swelling, loss of range of motion

and feeling of instability. Puan Shafiqah also demonstrated exercises that are suitable

for the rehabilitation process.

The second session from our Physiotherapist was on Cervical Spondylosis. It is a
