BOYS GYMNASTICS

The boys gymnastics team of 1983 had two standouts, senior Tony Ruetting and junior Dean Case. Both Tony and Dean qualified for state on still rings. Tony took first place on the still rings in the Skyline League and also in dis-trict meets. Tony was named to the First teamf All Conference.

TRACK

In girls track, Yvette Grove was the State Champion in 110 hurdles. Melis-sa Castor received the most points of anyone on the team. Yvette and Melis-sa earned letters, as well as Gina Gar-cia, Cindy Killen, Anne-Marie Maes-tas, Juanita Kelley and Kim Harris.

In boys track, the team consisted of only six upperclassmen and four fresh-men. The small team wasn't able to earn many points, but there was some good potential in the team members. These members included: Todd Brad-bury, Bill Martinez, Tyrone Campbell and Mike Smotherman.

Strike 3, You're Out High-land's varsity baseball team, coached by Fred Harden-brookf started out slow this year, but ended optimistical-ly, Next year the team will be more experienced and they feel they will be much better. Looking ahead, next year's team has tremendous poten-tial.

Donkey Basketball has been an annual event at Highland for the past few years. This year was no different. On April 22, the players desperately tried to score points against the opposing class. The players attempted to lead their donkeys to the basket and to mount them in order to score points without much success.

Some of the players included, K. Bair, G. Merrow, S. Young, R. Lockman, C. Killen, P. Benbrook, T. Andrew, and, of course, those adorable, stubborn donkeys.

A lot of activities are planned to keep us busy. Yes, its Spirit Week, and everyone is looking forward to the fun involved. The days planned include Preppy, Punk, Clash, Green, and Toga. "Seasons in the Sun" proved to be exciting for the cast and others involved in the pro-duction. Thursday, March 24, American Cable Vision of Thornton video-taped the performance for public view-ing. Saturday's performance is becoming even more excit-ing with the appearance of Shubert Fend rich, "Seasons" playwright.

"Seasons" is about a young folk singer who is suffering from leukemia. Hoping to solve some of his problems, he returns to Seaview, and his old girlfriend. Soon after-ward, they decide to get mar-ried.

SENIOR BRITNCH The Graduating Class of 1983 held the traditional Senior Brunch May 24, 1983 at the Holiday Inn North. As in past years the senior class in-vited the Highland s t a f f . During the Brunch, various seniors were given special recognition and awards for special achievements, accomplished during their four years at Highland, Besides the great food, a good time was had by everyone. The night was May 21, one that will long be remem-bered by the students of Highland High. It was the first nice day since the May blizzard, four days earlier, and it was Prom night. There were many in atten-dance as the live band Gemini, played the tunes everybody knew. A new way of appointing king and queen was instigated; everybody who attended was eligible and the names were drawn out of a box. The 1983 Junior-Senior Prom king and queen were Robert Burkland and Cin-der Prince. The female sen-ior attendants were, Bon-nie Dack, Maureen Wein-

Even the rain that started about 11:30 could not dampen the high spirits found at the 1983 Junior-Senior Prom.

VAR Welcome one and all, it's time for the 1983-84 Variety Show. This year it consists of a number of Highland stu-dents and even some alumni. On this datef Friday, October 14, 1983, many secret talents will be shown to the public.

Along with the host, Mr. Newton, we all will be seeing some outstanding acts. For example, skits, chorus line dances, live bands, drum solos, singing choirs and even some magic acts. The highlight of the show will be towards the end when the lovely Royalty for this year's Homecoming is announced.

This year the Highland ad-ministration has changed somewhat. Ms, C. Tufly has replaced Mr. J. Hawley and Mr. L. Petralia. The other members which make up the administration are once again doing a great job. Mr. Polito has now been principal at Highland for 15 years, and he's getting better every year. Mr. Hower has also re-turned as Activities Director giving his usual dedication to the student body.

This year was a frustrating one for the Hornets from a standpoint The most exciting games of the season were Ponderosa, Rangeview and of course the big Homecoming win over Douglas County,

The 1983 season was also Coach Fusiekfs last year as head coach. He has been bead coach for five years, putting many hours of bard work in. He has chosen to pursue fur-ther studies in athletic train-ing, and will be missed in fu-ture Highland football sea-sons.

GYMNASTICS

Ms. Linder came to Highland in 1969, She has been coach-ing the team for 15 years. During her career here, she has produced two league championship teams and has never had a losing season. She enjoys coaching. It is very rewarding for her to take a freshman that scores low and coach her to an All Conference gymnast. That makes the hard work worth-while.

The 1983 girls gymnastics season was a building year for with most of the team being underclassmen. The

Seniors finished strong with Lisa Dickhaut being named first team, All Conference on the balance beam, and Cheryl Salazar being named second team, All Conference on the uneven bars. The team placed sixth in the league champion-ship, which was good for such a young team.

WRESTLING f

Highland's wrestling team, coached by Rex Geske, was young this year, but was able to pull things together, especially in tournaments. Highland was able to place 4th in the Pueblo Invitational.

Mike Murfitt, a senior, hopes to go to state with a record of 19 - 5. Mike is also captain this year and placed 4th in state in frees-tyle. We wish Mike the best.

Jim Samudio wrestles 98 lbs. and is a promising wrestler. His record is 13 - 10 and he is only a sophomore.

Marty Garcia graduates this year and has only wrestled 2 years. Marty has improved 100% and works extra hard. Good Luck in the future.

Robert Dominguez, a senior, complied a 14 - 8 record and has made a real turn around this year. Good Luck Robert.

This year's team was small, but it's not the number that matters, just how good they are. With decisive victories over teams like Arvada and Broomfield, the boys swim team has drastically im-proved from a year ago. Find-ing leadership from return-ing seniors Gene Brown, and William 'Samudio, the team has found that winning com-bination, and hopes that sev-eral will go to state. The coach this year was Joe Cost.
