The Benjamin Franklin House will take audiences on a transcendental journey back into the era that was to herald not only the French, American and Industrial Revolutions but The Romantic Revolution too. Benjamin Franklin's (1706-1790) contribution to the ideas, energies, and activity of this time was foundational. Each of the seven unique spaces within the Benjamin Franklin house, retaining many original architectural features, have been curated for this event by House of The Young Romantics around the names of Schmincke Hordam's watercolor pigments. These pigments - English Venetian Red, Paris Blue, Chinese White, Gold, Rose Madder, Indigo Hue & Deep Red were bought by Catherine Suleiman in Florence and used in the production of her 21 paintings.

Dear Guest,

Welcome to A Day of Romanticism, curated for you with care by House of The Young Romantics. Collect a champagne cocktail in the courtyard and enjoy your wander through the seven rooms of the exhibition, 21 Years. Afterwards mingle with guests while listening to New Romantic music or

engage in the talks programme and documentary film, that reflect on the cultural importance of the 80s New Romantic Movement.

We thank everyone who has created the opportunity for us all to come together in this beautiful architectural space to celebrate and talk about art during London Frieze Week 2021.

With Love,

House of the Young Romantics

I found a printer up the street and found a picture of David Bowie with his head in his hands from the ‘Heroes’ session, obviously in confusion. And I wrote ‘Fame, Fame, Fame, What’s Your Name? A Club for Heroes. Tuesday Nights’. I didn’t put an address because we didn’t want anyone to know where it was. We wanted to personally invite you.

We went to Smile, the hairdressers. I said to Keith, ‘Can you give these to some cool people? You know who they are.’ We went to the Paul Howie shop, we went to PX. We went to all of our friends’ shops and said, ‘Look, we’re having a party. It’s 50p to get in.’

Dylan Jones, Sweet Dreams: f rom Club Culture to St yle Culture, The Stor y of the New Romantics, (London: Faber & Faber L imited, 2020), p139.

Just as only music awakens in man the sense of music, and just as the most beautiful music has no sense for the unmusical ear — is [no] object for it, because my object can only be the confirmation of one of my essential powers — it can therefore only exist for me insofar as my essential power exists for itself as a subjective capacity; because the meaning of an object for me goes only so far as my sense goes (has only a meaning for a sense corresponding to that object) – for this reason the senses of the social man differ from those of non-social man. Only through the objectively unfolded richness of man’s essential being is the richness of subjective human sensibility (a musical ear, an eye for beauty of form — in

short, senses capable of human gratification, senses affirming themselves as essential powers of man) either cultivated or brought into being. For not only the five senses but also the so-called spiritual senses, the practical senses (will, love etc.), in a word, the human senses, the humanness of the senses, comes into being first through the existence of its object, through humanized Nature. The formation of the five senses is a work of all of preceding world history.

Rusty: We looked at the Berlin of the 1920s and the 1930s in an artistic and creative way to do with floor shows, and cabaret...I even went to the Romy Haag club and it was because of Romy Haag I made a record with a girl called Ronny, a beautiful song...

If you want me to stay I’ll be around someday

to be available for you to see

But I’m about to go And baby then you’ll know

For me to stay here I’ve got to be me

Rusty: So beautiful...what it captured, brilliant...I only had a decade of music but all my music was innovative...what I mean by that is I didn’t just make a record - each record had a point and a story and an art that had something to do with culture...and, as you said, it was very inspirational to other people...
