Stamp Out Hunger is the country’s largest single-day food drive. Last year’s drive resulted in carriers collect- ing 71.6 million pounds of food from local communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Since the drive began in 1993, total dona- tions have surpassed 1.6 bil- lion pounds of food. The food drive has become the na- tion’s largest one-day cam- paign to collect food for distribution to needy fami- lies. Making a donation is easy. Customers should leave their non-perishable food donations in a bag near their mailbox on Saturday, May 11, before their letter carrier arrives. In the days leading up to the food drive, letter carriers will be deliv- ering special bags along with your mail that may be used to make donations. Food collected during Satur- day’s drive will be delivered to local community churches, food banks and food pantries for distribu- tion. While all non-perish- able donations are welcome, foods that are high in pro- tein, such as canned tuna, salmon, beans and peanut butter, are most needed. Canned fruits and vegeta- bles, whole grain, low sugar cereals, macaroni and cheese dinners, and 100% fruit juice also top the list of most needed items. Over the past three years, the North Country staff and board have been raising funds for a new facility. North Country’s current facility no longer meets its needs. The proposed new fa- cility will allow for the growth and expansion of the emergency food distribution to more than 220 charitable organizations, in more than 75 communities, spanning 21 counties in northwest and west central Minnesota. Among those organizations is the Thief River Falls Area Food Shelf. North Country’s efforts are beginning to produce re- sults. Its building project was approved for a $3 mil- lion contribution by the state of Minnesota during the 2018 legislative session. This milestone put North Country well over the half- way mark of its estimated project cost of $6 million, but North Country must still raise an additional $1.5 mil- lion in order meet the state’s dollar for dollar match re- quirement. “This gift from the Otto Bremer Trust will have a major impact on North Country’s work to secure funding for a new facility,” said Susie Novak, executive director. “We sincerely ap- preciate the support from the Otto Bremer Trust, and are excited to move one step closer to our goal.” The impact of North Country’s building project will be felt by thousands throughout northwest and west central Minnesota. North Country serves high- risk individuals on a daily basis. Its 15,000-square- mile service area is home to approximately 350,000 peo- ple. Nearly 13 percent of res- idents, many of whom are the “working poor,” fall below the poverty line, and about 10 percent are food in- secure. Last year alone, North Country distributed more than 10 million pounds of food, the equivalent of ap- proximately 8.5 million meals. The food North Coun- try distributes helps chil- dren, people with disabilities, families, and senior citizens, and ad- dresses their immediate basic needs. It also helps in- crease possibilities for greater health, employment, education, and/or prosperity. NCTC honors graduates Commencement exercises May 16 and 17 Northland Community and Technical College will honor more than 821 gradu- ates during two spring com- mencement ceremonies. The Thief River Falls campus will celebrate its 52nd com- mencement ceremony on Thursday, May 16, in the Northland gymnasium at 6:30 p.m. Northland's East Grand Forks campus will hold its 44th commencement ceremony on Friday, May 17, at 11 a.m. in the Chester Fritz Auditorium, Grand Forks, N.D. “A lot is said about life being more about the jour- ney than the destination, but it’s also true that you need to stop and celebrate the accomplishments as they occur or you will never ap- preciate your progress,” said President Dennis Bona. “Commencement is a must opportunity to celebrate a major achievement in your life and although it’s always fun to have people support- ing you at the event, trust me when I say the pride you feel when you walk across that stage is amazing whether someone is there to see it or not. It’s personal and it’s deeply satisfying.” All are invited to attend or to watch the ceremonies streamed online. Live Stream Broadcast A live stream webcast of the commencement exer- cises will be available online at www.northlandcollege. edu/grad2019 for those who are unable to attend but would like to watch the cer- emonies. The video will play once broadcasting starts and can be viewed on your com- puter, mobile device, or smart TV. Commencement ceremonies are about 90 minutes long. On building relationships

CBS News Sunday morning ran a storylast Sunday about three kids joining awoman who was eating alone at a restau-rant. The story was all about building rela-tionships and strengthening bonds and howthose relationships have an impact on hap-piness in life. Rev. Gordon Berntson passed away onApril 25 in Fargo, N.D., at the age of 93. Ididn’t know him when he was a pastor inNewfolden. I knew him and his family whenhe was a pastor in Carrington, N.D. PastorBerntson was always reaching out buildingconnections and relationships. And it’s true,he was always reaching out to people - a les-son I think his kids learned well. I went tocollege with his son Steve, who is a pastornow, too. Though I also knew his daughterRuth, who taught school in Thief RiverFalls until she passed away from cancer, and his son Mark, who was a physician inThief River Falls, too, I knew them as out-standing individuals who always reachedout to others to help build relationships andconnections. It’s funny how these connec-tions and relationships build over time. In any event, during a visitation andprayer service Sunday, one of his boys re-counted a family vacation. In the Berntsonhousehold, vacation usually meant goinghome to the family farm. To the kids, goingto the farm to work was not the first thingthat came to mind when the word “vaca-tion” was mentioned. I suspect it wasn’t be-cause they didn’t like the farm; it was moreor less because it wasn’t the extended pe-riod of recreation one would typically as-cribe to vacation. One year, while on their

way to their vacation resort/family farm,Gordon’s son said his father spotted afarmer working a field with a combine andstopped. While the family stayed in the car,Gordon got out of the car and began talkingwith the man. Gordon was always reachingout and having conversations with people.Frequently, as in this situation, it was spurof the moment. Much to the surprise of Gor-don’s family, however, Gordon climbed intothe cab of the tractor with the farmer andoff they went down the field. Can you imagine the conversation be-tween the farmer and his wife that night? The husband telling his wife the craziestthing happened today. The wife looks up ex-pectantly, and wondering at the same timewhat could possibly be so unusual to rate“crazy” while combining. He shares hisstory and when finished, they look at eachother and say the same thing, “what an in-teresting person.” Maybe they would have had the fore-sight to ask what it all meant. Coincidentally, Pastor Matt Valan ofMessiah Lutheran in Fargo, N.D., last Sun-day talked about building bridges, reachingout, and building relationships instead ofattempting to cast out those who don’t con-form to our expectations. Too much of that is happening in politicsand social media today. I hope it doesn’tbegin to happen in our communities. By theway, Pastor Valan preaches at the samechurch Gordon’s son Steve preached at. I couldn’t ignore the message that somany people were sharing with me lastSunday and not share them with you. Andthat message: The world isn’t so big. It’s cer-tainly not too big that we can’t build rela-tionships instead of tear them down. I like to think Gordon would havethought the same.

Rural Reflections …

A letter to my brother, Dave

Dear Dave, I may have removed thestraw too soon from the sep-tic tank and drain field asspring recently weakened, fall opened the door andwinter returned for a day.Our snow was not as intensenor did it accumulate like itdid in Carrington, N.D.,;however, it was unpleasant. Drain field straw removalis only part of spring aroundhere, Dave. This spring, there was enough snow meltto make the Black Rivercome out of its banks for alittle bit. This brought a lotof last fall’s straw from theharvest downriver to us. Asmall percentage of thatstraw is now hanging on thefence. Wet, fence-line strawremoval is one of my leastfavorite jobs, and one whichI have not had to perform forseveral years. Surprisingly,

this does not fill me withnostalgia, which is my usualreaction to personal-historyrevisitation, rather I checkthe medicine cabinet foribuprofen, my drug of choice. Spring is always a drop-shipment of maintenance forme, Dave. I use synthetic oilin everything now, so I don'tchange oil as often, buteverything gets a new oil fil-ter, air filter and a shot ofgrease. Spring used to meanpurchasing new batteries foreverything, too; however, myuse of battery maintainershas put an end to this rite ofspring. A lot of what I doaround here is just cleaning– cleaning the branchesfrom the yard, cleaning upequipment and cleaning upwasted bird food. Actually, there is no such thing aswasted bird food as gracklesarrive in force to clean up. No farming going on outhere, Dave. I haven't evenseen a fertilizer floater onthe highway this week. Isuspect this cold, wetweather is making anxiety aconstant companion to mostfarmers. It's not fun to addthis additional stress to a

group that is already undera lot of pressure. The truthis, given seven to 10 days ofgood planting, most springwork will be done and haveenough growing season tomake it all work. We spoke last week dur-ing our Facebook program,Dave, and you said farmersin the Carrington area wereplanting small grains justahead of a pretty sizablesnow storm. I suspect thesnow is already melted bynow and adding to your sub-soil moisture. You are solucky. Work has been busyaround here, Dave. I thinkthe weekends are almost asbusy as the weekdays. I likethe diverse tasks though asI can go from working onequipment, to editing videosto being on-air with you, allin one day. I don't like bore-dom and I haven't seenmuch of it for a long time. I hope all is well with you,Dave. I will be thinking ofyou as you work your waythrough another busyspring.

With the dual meet hang-ing in the balance, ThiefRiver Falls’ top player ColeGillespie made things fairlyanti-climactic as he tookevery single game from Eli-

jah Schmidt over the courseof two sets, winning 6-0, 6-0. Thief River Falls HeadCoach Fabian Tunberg spec-ulated that Perham wentwith a strong doubles lineupto build confidence. He con-siders his own squad andPerham to be the top twoteams in the section againthis year and he expects Per-ham to use a different lineupin the section tournament. “We’ve had 11 matches al-ready this year and they’veonly had four, and it shows,”Tunberg said. “Our singleslooked strong. This is poba-bly the lineup we are going togo with. “We have depth and if wecome to play, I don’t think toomany teams will touch us. If

we don’t come to play, an ath-letic team like Perham canplay with us.”

Sharing a vision ofpossibility

Marvin has always beenknown for creating windowsand doors that make a homefeel comfortable and secure, but the way people live ischanging and so are theirexpectations of their home. “The average personspends 90 percent of theirtime indoors, making itmore important than ever toconsider the role windowsand doors play in people’slives, their connection to theoutdoors and their well-being,” said Paul Marvin. The company is commit-ted to a number of internalinitiatives that put people atthe center – to understandwhat people need, how theylive and then, in turn, bringforward new solutions tohelp them live happier, healthier lives. One such ini-tiative is the in-house Mar-vin Design Lab, developed toreshape the company’s ap-proach to innovation withhuman-centered design atthe core. Extensive researchand work was also done in-ternally to define the com-pany’s purpose and valuesand to engage all employeeswho make this vision a real-ity. “The heart of Marvin hasalways been one of possibil-ity, of designing for people,”said Paul Marvin. “A singlebrand expands on this possi-bility and allows us to useour expertise to make a pos-itive impact on our cus-tomers' lives for years tocome. The look and feel ofthe brand and collectionsmay be changing, but thecore of who we are – inten-tional, committed and caring– remains the same.”
