H M R F O U N D A T I O N

Welcome to our new world! We are proud to unveil our new visual identity, and we’re sure you’ll love it too. The result of a thorough examination of our positioning as a Montreal-based hospital foundation, our new brand identity stems from one of Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont’s unique strengths: renewed health through cellular therapy.

A veritable revolution in the treatment of incurable cancers and other diseases, such as heart failure and autoimmune disease, cellular therapy and regenerative medicine bring patients new hope. HMR has developed nationally and internationally renowned expertise and has some of the world’s most advanced infrastructures for producing “cell-based medications” for clinical applications. These new treatment options are more effective and result in fewer side effects than traditional treatments. Another well-kept secret: HMR is a global leader when it comes to R&D in this cutting-edge field.

And because every patient deserves the best of tomorrow’s medicine today, the Foundation wishes to continue supporting HMR in this promising area. Since 2011, the Foundation has distributed over $9M to HMR to support the development of these remarkable medical advances, namely through the Centre of Excellence in Cellular Therapy, Canada’s largest and one of the world’s largest such facility.

By continuing its daily work for patient care, research and teaching, the Foundation has helped HMR turn major projects into reality for the benefit of patients and researchers, including by creating a university ophthalmology centre at Université de Montréal in March and opening a cancer immunotherapy commercialization centre in July. In the following pages you will discover some of the Foundation’s other accomplishments made possible by the generosity of our donors and partners.

Inspired by the great promise of cellular therapy, let us stand together with our fellow Montrealers and future generations and support the treatments of the future, which are just around the corner.

Together, healing HMR’s patients stems from us!

Healing stems from all of us

A new image to better express our mission

Our new logo

Colourful and dynamic, the HMR Foundation’s new identity platform features moving cells forming a chain to illustrate our ability to join forces to regenerate health through sharing, solidarity and selflessness.

The main logo, illustrated using a single green cell, represents a stem cell from which this chain reaction of support for patients is born. The vivid colours of the platform evoke energy, concrete action for the Foundation and its life-affirming, welcoming and positive impact on the community. Also, the multitude of cells reminds us that for HMR’s patients, healing stems from every one of your acts of generosity toward the Foundation.

Our signature

Healing stems from you when you reach out to patients and their loved ones and give them hope and relief.

It’s about supporting the Foundation and the best in research, patient care and teaching at HMR. It’s about giving hope, one cell at a time, one act at a time.

The Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont Foundation plays an essential role in supporting our three-part patient care, teaching and research mission.

Many projects aimed at humanizing care and innovating would never have been possible without the Foundation’s invaluable support.

This has been the case for the HMR Centre of Excellence in Cellular Therapy, one of the world’s leading cellular therapy and regenerative medicine centres. Thanks to stem cells, researchers and clinicians now have at their disposable a range of innovative approaches with amazing potential to fight cancer. In this respect, the HMR Foundation is where healing begins.

Healing stems from you... and your generosity

But it is also where generosity begins: providing the public and the business community with the ability to contribute to a charitable organization that fosters the health of each and every one of our fellow citizens. I am therefore pleased to take advantage of this Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont Foundation Annual Report to highlight the essential character of the Foundation’s contribution and express my deep gratitude.

ORTHOPEDICS

First in Canada: complete hip replacement surgery in one day

On August 4, 2016, Dr. Pascal-André Vendittoli and his team accomplished quite a feat, performing a complete hip replacement in one day.

$312,790

Until very recently, this complex surgical procedure meant a five-to-six-day hospital stay. This medical breakthrough brings tangible benefits to patients: better pain management, less nausea, tight closure of the wound and preservation of muscular strength. Given the limited side effects of the procedure, patients return home after only a few hours. The medical team estimates that, in the medium term, around 70% of patients will be able to benefit from this medical advance. The Foundation is proud to have contributed $312,790 to this Canadian first.

“I was the first patient to have agreed to take part in this new protocol at HMR and I’m very proud of that. And by doing so, I got to benefit from outstanding care. Only two hours after the surgery, I was able to walk, and I even managed to go up a few stairs that day. And the same day I was operated on, I was able to return to my home in Terrebonne. I didn’t have any side effects like bleeding or nausea and I was just as independent as I was before the operation.

I am thrilled with the services I received from Dr. Vendittoli’s talented team at HMR. Thank you!”

RADIATION ONCOLOGYCroire fund: for patients’ physical and psychological wellbeing

$42,228Above and beyond the side effects caused by treatments, cancer is a disease that completely disrupts the quality of life of patients and their loved ones. The goal of the Croire fund is to support these people psychologically and socially. It provides essential emotional assistance along with approaches that complement medical treatment, including yoga, nutrition, meditation, art therapy and massage

NEONATAL UNITLevel IIIA: caring for babies born at as few as 26 weeks of gestation

$152,867The Foundation made it possible for HMR to acquire specialized equipment and vital supplies so that the hospital’s neonatal unit could be level IIIA-certified, qualifying it to welcome babies born prematurely after as few as 26 weeks of gestation. The donation allowed for the purchase of an amplitude-integrated EEG machine that indicates whether controlled hypothermia treatment can be started in order to slow the progression of injuries to the baby’s brain, prevent lasting adverse effects and reduce the risk of death. Furthermore, the neonatal unit was also able

therapy workshops. A total of 55 workshops were organized this year for the benefit of 1,353 participants.

to acquire air-oxygen mixers to resuscitate newborns, a lamp and neonatal radiant canopy warmer on stable wheels to prevent hypothermia, as well as transport mattresses to properly secure newborns during interhospital transfers.

ONCOLOGYElectronic ticketing: putting an end to the wait

$19,500In the past few years, the HMR Oncology Centre has seen patient numbers jump 20%. Every day, between 20 and 40 patients had to wait, standing up, for up to 45 minutes before and after their medical visit. That was a very long wait, especially for sick and frail patients. To fix the situation, the HMR Foundation provided $19,500 to purchase an electronic ticketing system that provided a real-time view of patient waiting time. This made it possible for patient care staff to be assigned continuously throughout the day

as needs changed. The benefits are clear: an increase in the number of patients treated, a calm setting where patients await their visit in comfort, and the total elimination of the waiting line.

MEDICAL BIOLOGYTechnology: lowering the risk of error

$101,000In the coming years, HMR’s medical biology labs will see a 40% to 100% increase in demand depending on the area of activity. To meet that demand and improve the labs’ performance, they have purchased a next-generation sequencing platform thanks to the HMR Foundation. The platform has an ultra-advanced computerized analytical capacity that makes it possible to establish fast, effective and more complete diagnoses at a lower cost, yielding estimated savings of $75,000 a year. This technology has

PEDIATRICSBiofeedback project: treating urinary incontinence in children

$17,200When children are finally able to control their urination, it’s a big step toward independence. A chronic incontinence problem can be a major burden and source of distress for the child. Bladder re-education treatment using biofeedback can yield a significant improvement in chronic symptoms. The treatment helps diminish psychological harm to the child as well as the repercussions on his or her family, much to the relief of all concerned. On April 6, 2016, for the fifth year in a row, Opération Enfant Soleil renewed its support for the HMR Foundation by donating $16,073

a notable impact on the quality of analyses conducted by reducing the risk of error and, subsequently, complications for patients.

NUCLEAR MEDICINEPurchase of a Xeleris console: efficiency gain

$26,264In nuclear medicine, it’s important that all doctors have a Xeleris console at their disposal to interpret the tests that have been performed, such as PET/CT scans, which are used to detect cancer early and follow its progression, evaluate the effectiveness of a treatment and detect the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Given that a physician had recently joined HMR’s nuclear medicine team and in light of the volume of test requests, the department needed to acquire

an additional console to avoid the loss of efficiency created by the need to share consoles. In 2016, the console provided by the Foundation led to an efficiency gain that benefited patients, because the sooner a diagnosis is made, the sooner treatments can begin!

for biofeedback treatment of incontinence in HMR’s young patients. The Foundation supplemented that amount with $1,127 to meet the remainder of the project’s financial need.

CELLULAR THERAPY

Centre for Commercialization of Cancer Immunotherapy (C3i)

In 2016, one more step was taken in the fight against cancer: Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and the Networks of Centres of Excellence of Canada granted $15M to HMR to establish the Centre for Commercialization of Cancer Immunotherapy (C3i).

The Centre will make it possible to develop innovative, non-toxic treatments using immunotherapy to fight cancer. These revolutionary treatments harness the power of the immune system to cure patients, improving their quality

$500,000

of life and reducing the cost of care. By 2025, these treatments could be used in 60% of patients with advanced cancers. The medicine of tomorrow is being developed right here, right now, at HMR!

In 2016, the $500,000 provided by the HMR Foundation enabled the hospital to obtain $15M in subsidies from the Government of Canada and $2.5M from the Government of Quebec, while providing the financial leverage to attract a further $35M in contributions from over 40 industry and university partners. In all, $50M was invested to make this major project possible and to make advances in personalized medicine.

C3i’s activities will be conducted at HMR’s Research Centre and the Centre of Excellence in Cellular Therapy (CETC), whose creation in 2013 was made possible by nearly $9M in support from the HMR Foundation.

CELLULAR THERAPYSupport for the development of Regenerative Medicine and Cellular Therapy Network (CellCAN)

$400,000In 2013, with the support of the HMR Foundation, HMR created Quebec’s first Centre of Excellence in Cellular Therapy and Regenerative Medicine. In so doing, the hospital and its medical teams consolidated their leadership position in Canada in the field of cellular therapy, a medical discipline that has been practiced at HMR since 1980. In 2014, to promote the advancement of research and facilitate the development of stem cell treatments, they created CellCAN, a network that brings together stakeholders from the field to share knowledge and best practices. CellCAN is led by Dr. Denis Claude Roy, Scientific Director at the HMR Research Centre. In 2016, the HMR Foundation provided CellCAN with $400,000 to support advancements in cellular therapy and the development of personalized stem cell treatments.

ONCOLOGYBreast cancer: helping women affected by “chemo brain”

$370,000Thanks to contributions of $350,000 from the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation and $20,000 from the HMR Foundation, a promising pilot project was launched at HMR to help women with breast cancer who suffer cognitive difficulties linked to chemotherapy, a condition known as “chemo brain.” The project’s goal is to screen for, evaluate and treat the cognitive difficulties linked to cancer treatments, including stress, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety and fatigue. Using a multidimensional approach, the team at HMR seeks to improve the experience of cancer patients and their loved ones, all of whom suffer from the disease’s consequences, in order to lessen the repercussions of the treatment.

ONCOLOGYResearch project on pediatric leukemia

$100,000Thanks to a generous donation from the Cole Foundation, we were able to provide Dr. Frédérick Mallette with $100,000 for his research on pediatric leukemia, Canada’s most pervasive cancer. His research project deals specifically with acute megacaryoblastic leukemia, which accounts for around 10% of blood cancer cases. This type of leukemia is characterized by genetic anomalies called “oncogenic fusions” which alter normal cellular functions and contribute to the onset of the disease. Unfortunately, the disease’s prognosis is dire: less than 20% of young patients survive more than two years after being diagnosed. Dr. Mallette and his team use cutting-edge molecular and cellular biology techniques, as well as biochemistry techniques, to uncover the causes of this type of leukemia. The ultimate goal is to identify therapeutic approaches to treat this fatal disease affecting children.

RESEARCH CENTRE Purchase of equipment to make innovative discoveries

$951,000To respond to growth in activities, consolidate achievements, provide development support and enable researchers to make innovative discoveries, the HMR Research Centre depends on the HMR Foundation’s essential support. In 2016, the Foundation contributed $951,000 toward the acquisition of new equipment and replacement of old equipment. Thanks to this contribution, the HMR Research Centre was able to purchase an autoclave for sterilizing equipment using high-pressure steam, which is an essential best practice for laboratories; an agitator plate for one of the cell culture rooms; freezers and refrigerators to store human samples; oxygen-level detectors; and a Bioplex system for peptide/protein analyses, used primarily by researchers focusing on immunology and oncology.

OPHTHALMOLOGY

A prestigious venue for the ophthalmology department

On March 14, 2016, the Foundation proudly accepted the honour of having the Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont Ophthalmology Department designated as the Centre universitaire d’ophtalmologie de l’Université de Montréal (CUO).

$12M in 10 years

Over the last decade, the Foundation contributed over $12M to the development of the field of vision health, all for the benefit of patients. This designation is the crowning achievement that recognizes the excellent work of HMR’s teams. As the population ages, the incidence of blindness and poor vision is growing exponentially. Delivering state-of-the-art care is a public health priority that will help people stay active and maintain their independence. This designation ushers in a new era of cooperation that will result in a greater synergy between the patient-care, education and research activities of all the ophthalmology teachers at Université de Montréal. More than ever, these professionals will share their expertise and keep in step with discoveries and emerging therapies on the global stage.

ORTHOPEDICSA prestigious venue for the ophthalmology department

$10,000 On Janary 7, 2016, HMR was given its first virtual reality open surgery training simulator (knee reconstruction via total arthroplasty). The simulator was developed by OSSimTech in partnership with three orthopedic surgeons: Dr. Marc Isler and Dr. Vincent Massé from HMR and Dr. Véronique Godbout from CHUM. The simulator allows residents to build their confidence, develop dexterity by enabling them to drill and saw bones with an eye to minimizing patient risks, while reducing the stress associated with learning their discipline. The SIM-KTM simulator is a fantastic training tool for the medical education community, and the Foundation is proud to have contributed $10,000 to help create it.

TEACHING UNITSupporting tomorrow’s medical professionals

$78,000In 2016, the Foundation made it possible to upgrade some frequently used teaching rooms. The clinical teaching unit for internal medicine, located on the 9th floor care unit, was completely redesigned as a highly functional environment for learning and collaboration, with high-powered computers, an HD display, up-to-date reference books and more. This is where resident physicians and externs treat patients under the supervision and tutelage of an internist. The room is also used as a venue for interprofessional meetings.

ONCOLOGYLearning kits: better understanding treatments

$20,000For the past six years, the HMR Oncology Centre has developed classes designed to allow a constantly growing number of patients to benefit from information before their chemotherapy or radiation therapy treatments begin or before they undergo a hematopoietic stem cell transplant. These information sessions benefit over 750 patients a year. They contribute to patients’ quality of life by teaching them about the signs and symptoms to watch out for at home

EAR, NOSE & THROATA better way to learn surgical sequences

$15,325Endonasal septoplasty and rhinoplasty are two operations performed in otorhinolaryngology, often called “Ear, Nose & Throat” (ENT). They need to be mastered by residents at the end of their residency at HMR. Until early 2016, this subject matter was very difficult to teach, as the teaching surgeon was unable to watch the operation as it was being carried out inside the patient’s nose. To address this shortcoming, teacher and resident had to trade places constantly. But since a flexible high-definition ENF-VH scope was acquired through a donation from the HMR Foundation, the surgeons’ ability to teach has improved. Installed on a nasal spreader, it transmits the various steps

GRANTS AND ADVANCED TRAINING

$337,911Every year, the HMR provides care staff with encouragement. In 2016, in addition to enabling 329 people to receive advanced training or attend professional development workshops worth a total of $177,577, the Foundation awarded eight research grants to up-and-coming professionals, as well as eight fellowships for members of the Conseil des médecins, dentistes et pharmaciens, totalling $160,334.

E V E N T S

A big thank-you to the SAQ for 15 years of outstanding collaboration, resource sharing and know-how. Like a great wine, our partnership ages well.

Where commitment stems from “Our son Jean-François was diagnosed with leukemia on July 22, 1991, at the age of three. Despite three years of treatments, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, he passed away on May 27, 1994. That was the very moment we decided to help sick children at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont and improve their quality of life.

We wish to thank our family and friends from the bottom of our hearts. They have supported us for over 20 years and helped our benefit events raise nearly $800,000. In 2016, your generosity made it possible to move and renovate the pediatric medicine day centre. As a result, the centre is now able to welcome more patients, prevent hospitalization, care for younger and older children in two separate environments each better suited to their respective needs, and provide a safer setting for our clients and care staff.”

At the HMR Foundation, everyone puts heart and soul into organizing fundraising activities to support improvements in patient care. Whether they’re employees or volunteers at the hospital, patients or caregivers, they are committed and motivated people who give generously of their time to help us accomplish our mission. Thank you so much!

“At age of 49, I started suffering from pain in my right shoulder. At first, the doctors treated me for arthritis, but to no avail. That’s when I was diagnosed: multiple myeloma, a rare form of bone marrow cancer. They gave me six to 12 months to live. I was in shock. I searched the Web and consulted doctors in Switzerland and Italy to find the best place in the world to receive cutting-edge treatment, a stem cell transplant. But all along, the best medical expertise was right here at HMR!

My sister came all the way from Italy to donate her bone marrow to me. Dr. Denis Claude Roy and his team performed my transplant operation on October 25, 1996. Thanks to them, I celebrated 20 years of remission this year! I owe them my life and I’ll be grateful to them forever. Every year on the anniversary of my transplant, I pay them a visit to thank them for the extraordinary care I received from them.

And donating to the HMR Foundation is yet another way to express my gratitude for Dr. Roy’s medical team, while supporting research on this all too poorly understood disease.”

Healing stems from dedication“I’ve been a Foundation volunteer for three years now. I’ve been contributing by making thank-you calls, preparing mailings and helping to organize recognition events. I feel at home and appreciated here, and that does me a lot of good. Volunteering is my way to thank the hospital and in particular Dr. Richard Gauthier, a pneumologist at HMR, for the outstanding care my son Martin received during his six-month stay there.

It’s an important way for me to express my appreciation for the life I have.”
