The Hopkins School District saw its’ first “wintry mix” of the season on November 11,2008 but many braved the roads and made it to our 2nd Annual Grants Showcase atHopkins High School.

HEF donors, volunteers and community members were excited to learn about the 2007-08 grants from the Hopkins teachers and administrators who wrote them. Some of our grant recipients brought students to help explain the benefits of their grants andstudents from the National Honor Society were also on hand. Their presence inspired and reminded us that everything HEF works for is all about the students. The Foundationexists to support them and they make us proud.

HEF grants represent every Hopkins school community as well as a cross section of gradelevels, learning abilities and subject areas. We are grateful for the ingenuity and creativityexhibited by the people who run our district and teach our children. They support theFoundation by providing their great ideas in the form of grants, enabling HEF to enrich theeducational lives of our district’s students.

Since it awarded its’ first grants in 1995, the Foundation has funded over $1.5 million ingrants. We are very fortunate that our children are surrounded by a generous communitywho believes in public schools and is proud to support the Hopkins School District,through donations of money, time and talent. The work we do together is a fine example of community spirit and what it can accomplish.

Class of ‘08 and HEF Grow up Together

As HEF’s fundraising efforts were being launched in 1995, the class of ’08 was beginning kindergarten.

In 1995, kindergartners and the HEF Board of Trustees had something in common - both were starting a new journey,

full of hope for their future.

While busy kindergartners were learning how to listen to teachers and share with others, HEF founderswere busy getting off the ground what would become the district’s most trusted partner for fundinginnovative programs to enhance learning.

Each successive year saw growth for both students and the Foundation, from those early years learningto read and do division for the kids, to increased fundraising ability and subsequent grants for HEF.

Fifth grade was a landmark year for HEF’s charter class. It was a year that started out with the study of explorers, a year in which any trumpet or flute playing child finally could join the school’s band and it was a year that welcomed the new millennium, without any of the feared glitches.

There were no glitches for the Foundation that year either. In fact, HEF held its first annual gala and proudly disbursed over $90,000 in grants, including a grant to the high school to develop a mobile mini-lab of wireless network-access laptop computers.

In 2005 HEF surpassed $1 million dollars awarded in grants to the Hopkins School District.

Five years later, the class of ’08 had entered adolescence and high school, and HEF passed the million-dollar mark. This was also the school year in which HEF awarded its largest grant to date, with the decision to award $130,000 for completing the amplification program in all of thekindergarten through sixth grade classrooms.

By the time the class of ’08 was finishing its senior year and making plans for college, students couldcount on what HEF had made possible for them. Using clickers and whiteboards, the wide availabilityof computers in classrooms, and access to a multitude of learning programs were now integral to theirlearning. In essence, it was used to state of the art, 21st century classrooms, made possible with the help of HEF.

The Hopkins Education Foundation, havingawarded over $1.5 million in grants since thosegraduates were kindergartners, continues to support growing young minds in the HopkinsSchool District.

And while students maynot have the answer to that yet, this grant helpsthem find their path. It is focused on educatingstudents and their parents on planning for highschool coursework and post-secondary training oreducation. Well-defined graduation plans will bedeveloped for sixth grade students as they begintheir transition into middle school.

Nature’s CornerElementary – $3,700 – Submitted by Larry WadeThis program gives students the opportunity toincrease their knowledge of plants and animals in their local environment.

Teaching Social Thinking for Students withAutism Spectrum Disorder$3,000 – Submitted by Kathy PattonStudents with ASD gain knowledge to better interactwith their peers and adults as well as be moreindependent in the adult world upon graduation.

DVD Resources for Parent Education $350 – Submitted by Cathy RudeThese informational DVD’s for parent educationclasses provide a cost-efficient way to increase parent education and involvement.

AVID Middle School CurriculumImplementationHHS – $7,500 – Submitted by Shannon BaileyAVID stands for Advancement Via IndividualDetermination and strives to improve the performance of all junior high kids in the academic middle. The AVID program includesboth an elective course and a building–wideapproach with the goal of improving students’academic skills, their ability to “do school” and become college-ready.

The North Junior High Players $5,000 – Submitted by Steven BuckoOver the course of a school year, the NJH Playerscan now produce one play, one musical and onenight of student written and directed one-actplays. This program is open to all students.

harley hopkinsDiversity Resource Center$500 – Submitted by Jen SkramstadTeachers now use relevant, culturally diverse materials to increase learning effectiveness.

alice smith elementary*Math Academy$3,300 – Submitted by Jody De St. HubertThis before school program provides math supportfor students in an effort to increase their success onMCA and MAP testing.

*ELMOTM Digital Cameras and Activotes Personal Response Systems$3,600 – Submitted by Jody De St. Hubert This grant funds three ELMO digital cameras tobe used with the carts in Kindergarten, 1st and2nd grades and 2 sets of Activotes™, integratedpersonal response systems used with interactivewhiteboards. They are designed to encourage student participation and enhance learning.

*In 2007, HEF received an gift of over $17,000 from the Katherine Curren Elementary communitywith the request that the funds continue to benefit Katherine Curren students who are now at AliceSmith Elementary, Eisenhower Elementary and Gatewood Elementary. The funds were to be used forstaff development, technology for students or resources for students. These grants are marked with an (*).

meadowbrook ElementarySecond Grade Reading Support $2,500 – Submitted by Gina SpooThis grant provides more cartridges for the Leap PadTM system, an instructional technology that offers interactive, multi-sensory instruction to struggling young readers.

tanglen ElementarySteps to Respect and Second Steps Violence and Bullying Prevention Curriculum $3,100 – Submitted by Gail Lewis-MillerDeveloped by the Committee for Children, all students learn skills to address bullying.Additionally, students gain skills for makingfriends, handling emotions and problem solving,helping students to excel academically.

North Junior High Future Cities Competition$600 – Submitted by Marcia DanahyStudents use computer software to design a city,build a scale model, write an essay and present a speech.

Collaboration Time for High Critical Thinking Science/Social Studies$2,900 – Submitted by Rebecca Fritz and Kathryn AndersonStudents acquire the knowledge, concepts and skillsneeded to engage in a higher level of learning,combining curricula from science and social studies.

Teaching Pre-AP Writing Skills$2,500 – Submitted by Eric NaessStudents will build confidence as writers, peer editors and collaborators while gaining a sharp eye for detail.

West Junior HighResident Video Curriculum Development Specialist$20,000 – Submitted by Terry Wolfson This technology pilot project at WJH increasescurricular engagement with students through themedium of video. The Resident Video Specialist willwork with classroom teachers to illustrate classroomtopics through the use of video, many times featuringHopkins students. Through writing and participatingin the videos, students will have the opportunityto become teachers of their peers.

Math Intervention Technology $7,500 – Submitted by Susan Elliott & Regina JohnsonUsing the nationally recognized Larson’s Mathprogram teachers create a totally individualizedapproach for students who struggle with math.The interactive and engaging software programuses diagnostic assessments to show where eachstudent’s skills are lacking, then teaches each skillto the student before providing formative andsummation assessments and any necessary help or instruction.

Scanner & Software for Modifying curriculum for Special Education$600.00 - Submitted by Roberta WhitmanTeachers can now modify worksheets and projects for Special Education students, morequickly and easily. They are able to post theseworksheets on their Moodle sites, providing easy access for students and parents.

TI-NavigatorTM System $4,000 – Submitted by Kristin LeeThis system provides a wireless communicationbetween the student’s calculator and the teacher’scomputer. Students work results can be displayedanonymously and simultaneously on one screen toview. This system improves the quantity and qualityof responses, classroom interaction and time on task.

Hopkins High SchoolMusic Technology Lab$40,000 – Submitted by Mark CzechThis grant is part of a larger project to add a MusicTechnology Lab at Hopkins High School. Themusic technology lab builds upon the currentinstrumental and vocal music offerings to includeskills necessary for success in today’s digital musicindustry. While utilizing GarageBandTM, studentswill create compositions, learn the art of recording,develop mix down techniques, and create endproducts such as original CDs or PodCasts.

Technical Education: Web Design and Business MarketingHopkins High School – $14,000 – Submitted by Tim Amlie and Heidi PetersonThis project creates an opportunity for HopkinsHigh School students to design, create, and maintainan actual web-site for a spirit wear embroiderybusiness. In addition, students will learn how tomanage all aspects of a small business. Funds raisedby the business will be returned to the studentsthrough Spirit Shop grants and sponsorships.

Online Newspaper $7,200 – Submitted by Jeff KocurThis project creates an online presence for the HHSnewspaper. It also allows student journalists toprovide a more immediate publishing service to theschool. It integrates photography, video and graphics.It more closely aligns the journalism program withwhat professional and scholastic journalists aredoing around the country.

College and Career Center Expansion$4,300 – Submitted by Mary SlindeWith more staff time, students are able to explorepost-secondary options including colleges, technical schools, military options and jobs.

Modeling Constructive Responses Using Student Work$1,300 – Submitted by Kathleen NelsonThis program gives students the courage to trynew problems and improves the quality of theirwritten responses.

Opening Doors to Post-Secondary Education$1,500 – Submitted by Donna FriedmanStudents with limited resources now have theopportunity to explore educational options available to them upon graduation..

Men’s Choir Curriculum Repertoire$2,000 – Submitted by Philip BrownThis project builds a library of quality repertoirespecifically written for men’s voices.

Enhancing Learning: Revolutions & Cross-Sectional Areas of Solids$500 – Submitted by Jacques Youakim12 three-dimensional models enable teachers to more effectively teach the revolution of solidsand cross-sectional area units offered in calculusand AP calculus curriculums.
