Editorial

THIS year the School opened under difficulties, Mr. Bousfield andseveral of the staff being detained owing to quarantine regulations, and so we had to work the first week without them. However, let us hope that all those who are to represent us at the Seniorand Junior Exams, at the end of the year, have settled down towork in earnest. As a result of the Armistice, numbers of our OldBoys are now returning from the Front. They have done theirduty well, but in the joy of their home-coming, there will betears for those whom we will never greet again.

The number of our Old Boys who enlisted has risen to over1,(002, and the Honour Board is filled up; the number of our" honoured dead " having risen to 167. Let us hope that theproposed memorial to these splendid and heroic men will soon bebegun.

We were sorry to lose Mr. Potts at the end of the firstterm11, but he takes v ' him the best wishes of the whole School.H,. took an active in cricket and rowing during his staywith us. At the I of the year, Mr. Lea resumed his dutiesat the School, afti < years' service at the Front. May hisfu'ure stay with us be long end pleasant ! Mr. Pennycuick obtainedlst Class HIonours in Chemistry, at the final examination in March, and we here take the opportunity of congratulating him.

Nobody may say of our Old Boys that they are not " doingtheir bit " to keep up the reputation of the School. In the FinalHonours Examination, four of our Old Boys attained to First Cla-Honours, L. I. A. Micheli. O. W. Tiegs, N. C. Aitken, C. B. Mot .In the Senior Examination, our Sixth Form did well, gainingthree University Scholarships. F. A. Irvine.gaining 2nd place inthe University Scholaruhips.

Our Annual Swimming Sports were held in the Spring HillBaths, and the thanks of all competitors are due to the official-who carried out the programme so efficiently. B. Burns won,the Cup for our Championship, winning the 50 Yards and 44Yards Championships, and gaining 2nd place in IK) Yards. J. (1Drake won the "Breast and Back," after a hard tussle willC. W. Wiliams. Swimming in all events, especially the juni(,ones, was of a high standard, and givs promise of a good tea11for next year. In the Secondary Schools' Swimming Sports, \\cwere again defeated by Gregory Terrace, but several of our rep -sentatives performed well. J. G. Drake won the " Breast andBack" in fine style; whilst R. S. Stephenson broke the recnlvfor the 30 Yards Championship (under 14).

For the first few days of the Term, the Rowing Shed requin lthe services of the Sixth Form. After two days' hard (?) workthey succeeded in rescuing the pontoon from the bottom of i i,river.

At the Easter Regatta, Robertson's crew won in e st l\from Hayne's [crew] Our representatives for the All School-Race are training hard under the efficient coaching of Mr. Willia n .and we expect great tnings of them.

The First XI. inished up last season very well, winning Itbmatches against Ipswich. Southport, Nudgec, Gregory Tenrr;'and Armidale. In the latter match, McDonnell scored 101 niout; whilst against Gregory Ter ace, L'Estrange obtained IIMJThese were the only centuries scored this season.

This year, the team still has the services of McDonnell. \\went to Eak on 14th March. and beat a combined team there I7 rmns on the first innrgs. thanks to a fine unfinished 82 1,M)cDonnell's. The team had a pleasant trip under the chargi ItMr. Connal. and an enjoyable stay there, thanks to the kindrl -,of Mr. Lord and family, and the people of Esk.

We were defeated by Toowoomba by 80 on the first inni,~ .but we were unfortunate in having to bat on the second d;a\ ia wicket soaked overnight with rain. Nothling bowled \\ 'I1.getting 9 for 71, and Moore batted nicely for 22 not out. \'tMa match Nothli g left for Sydney University, and he catinwith him the good wishes of the team.

6f only 14 players each.

We are pleased to hear that " Tom " Lawton and " Les "Rbbinson are bhck from the Front. " Tommy " intends to attend t 1the Queensland University this year, and has taken up his residenceat St. John's College.

H. E. Roberts has resigned from the position of Editor ofthis Journal, as he has entered the Queensland University. Wedesie to express our appreciation of his conscientious effortsto make the B.G.S. Magazine a success.

Lecti ]uvenes, Fortissima Corda

In the last issue of the Magazine, the number of Old Boys who hadealisted for service in the war was given as 962. Since then, the follownlagadditions have been made:-

Barrett, H. G. Hickey, D. J. Paton, J. H.Ball, W. H. Horn, A. k - I C.Blanshard, G. H. Hunter, W. P. Scott, E. P.Brown, . M. Inglis, A. C. Scott, Reginald ,ICapern, P. N. Jones. A. H. Scriven, E. G. B.Cooke, G. A. Kemp, A. RL Sexton, A. R.Cooper, F. E. Little, W. A. Spencer, R. C.Curel, A. C. Loney, E. A. Taylor, J. R. W.Duesbury, R. C. Macdonald, I. R. Thomson, J. G.Elworthy, F. S. Meise, V. L. This brings the corrected list to 1,003, a total of which the School hasreason to be proud. There are probably still omissions. We hope, in ournext issue, to publish the completed list. As a part of the War MemorialScheme, it is intended to prepare a Golden Book, containing the record of a""r volunteers. A circular has been issued to the next-of-kin, invitingiformation. So far the response has been excellent, but the list must becorrect and complete to satisfy the requirements. It is earnestly requestedthat anyone who can supply information should communicate with Mr.s Stephenson. Hon. Secretary to the War Memorial Committee. ,

Since the last issue of the Magazine, the scheme for establishing a WarMemorial has taken more definite shape. The General Committee discussedmany proposals, and finally decided to recommend to the general body of !subscribers that a Memorial Building should be erected on the School groundslto be used as a Library, Committee Room, and War Relic Room. In this !would be placed the Honour Board and other memorials of the heroes of thewar. The Golden Book, which is to record the part played by our Old Boysin the war, would be placed there. It would be a constant reminder of the icourage and patriotism of our predecessors in the School, and an inspiration -to all coming generations at the School. A meeting of subscribers was held '!!in the Assembly Hall on March 21st, and those present unanimously approvedof the scheme. The committee have formed plans for a determined effortto raise the funds necessary. At present the subscriptions received andpromised amount to 1,262. Two memorial windows have also been promised ,-one by Mr. H. W. Atkinson, in memory of Captain J. V. Atkinson, who ifell in action on April 5th, 191 . and the other by, Col. C. F. Plant, in memoryof Captain H. F. H. Plant, who was killed on August <9th. 191L(.

Whilst generous support has been accorded to the scheme, the Committeefeel that much more money must be raised before an adequate memorialcan be erected. Plans have been formed for an active personal canvass, which will be carried out as soon as possible. If each Old Boy, or eachrelative of an Old Boy volunteer, gives a fitting subscription, we shall haveno difficulty in raising the funds required. But we must judge a subscriptionto be fitting only if it means sacrifice on our part. ()ur Old Boys have ,sacrificed much for us, many of them have lai 1 down their lives, and we oweit to their memnory and to the School to do more than give what we shall notmiss. The Secretary will welcome all subscriptions and promises of help. 'h'

The Committee has also started on the task of collecting data for the(;olden Book. The next-of-kin have been asked to forward biographical 'irecords and photographs of the volunteers. Unfortunately, it has not beenpossible to obtain addresses of all, and anyone who can give the address '
