FOREWORD

The metrics of school performance is the quality of instruction that

translates to the quality of graduates. They are the products of the educational

system that meet the society’s expectations. To this end, the school provides a

continuum in the learning process that would ensure the acquisition of desired

learning competencies, higher quality programs for an improved level of

performance, knowledge creation and eventually opportunities for career

progression.

Through the decades there have been unrelenting initiatives to improve the

students’ academic performance, to address the issues on low turnout of quality

graduates and poor performance in particular in the subject areas of English,

Mathematics and Science. The quality of students that impacts on performance

has been a recurring issue. Along this line, there is a need for rethinking the

crucial role of teacher, home, community stakeholders, instructional facilities,

discipline, behavior and environment in the academic performance, if learners are

to grow and develop their full potential. It is performance that enables them to

achieve a quality of life that can survive the effects of the confluence of

environment, social, political and economic issues. Given an effective learning

environment, they will eventually acquire a preparation that conforms to

international standards.

The continuous conduct of investigations related to performance is

evidenced in a number of masteral theses in this journal issue that focus on factors

affecting academic performance that include stakeholders’ involvement,

educational facilities, classroom management, teaching strategies, home

influence, community involvement, behavioral problems and parental support.

Even the effect of multigrade classes on performance was explored.

The studies are in keeping with the growing recognition of assessment

initiatives to arrest the poor and deteriorating state of education, to institute

quality control standards for performance and to address the issue of quality,

access and equity. The success efforts to level up academic performance is

acknowledged to be a collective responsibility of all those who hold stakes in

education.

Multigrade Classes and Academic Performance of Pupils in Baco District

Rosalie M. Gabayno (2012) MAED – Administration and Supervision

Filipinos give much value to education. Considered a

basic human right, education is mandated by law to be

subsidized by the government from elementary up to

secondary school level. But given government‟s limited

budget and the already enormous task of providing enough

classrooms, teachers and textbooks for pupils and students

a year, there is still much to do to provide quality

education. These are some of the problems addressed by the

researcher in her study of multigrade classes in the

district of Baco. Multigrade teaching is a system adopted

by the public schools in educating pupils in the elementary

grades when there is insufficient number of enrollees in

the far-flung barrios. The multigrade teaching might have

its advantages and disadvantages on the part of the pupils

and teachers considering pupils‟ performance.

The achievement motivation theory by Wiener, field

theory by Gestalt and instructional theory by Gagne

supported this research.

This descriptive - correlational study aimed at

determining the relationship of multigrade classes and

academic performance of pupils in Baco District.

Data of the study were gathered from the 18 public

elementary schools in Baco District where the performance

of the pupils in the first, second and third grading

periods was used as one of the variables.

Findings showed that multigrade classes were effective

and that different variables included in the study did not

affect the performance of the pupils. However pupils took

pride in their community school even if they were in

GRADUATE SCHOOL 02

multigrade classes. Their performance was on the average

and could be comparable to that of the pupils in the

monograde.

Based on the findings it is recommended that:

The school administrators provide multigrade teachers

more training and workshop on teaching strategies, and an

appropriate teaching curriculum; DepEd officials assign

teachers with the proper training to teach multigrade

classes; classroom management and discipline be always a

part of multigrade teaching; teacher use the most effective

teaching strategies to improve pupils‟ academic

performance; teachers manage, plan and budget time to

develop their skills in teaching multigrade classes;

Parents motivate, guide, and assess the learning outcomes

of their children for teachers cannot do the task of

educating children alone.

Stakeholders’ Involvement and Educational Facilities Development in Selected Schools of Naujan East District:

Basis for Proposed Networking Plan Maricar A. Hicban (2014)

MAED – Administration and Supervision

This study focused on the stakeholders‟ involvement

and the educational facilities development in selected

schools of Naujan East District which was anchored on the

Environmentalist Learning Theory, McGregor‟s Theory Y and

Social Reconstructionism. The researcher selected

stakeholders including principals/school heads, teachers,

PTA members and community officials and was able to

identify their level of involvement in terms of planning

and seeking for available resources and linkages in order

to develop the educational facilities of the schools and

help in promoting and maintaining conducive learning

environments for the learners. Data were gathered through

administration of questionnaires.

The study concluded that stakeholders still lack

knowledge on networking and linkages necessary for

generating more school resources and that the schools do

not have the capacity to allocate sufficient funds and

resources for the safety and security of schools.

Thus, result of the study suggests maximizing the use

of available resources in the community providing more

opportunities for stakeholders to provide themselves with

the needed educational facilities.

The result also recommends that the proposed

Networking Plan be adopted to solicit support and

assistance from local, national, and even international

linkages for purposeful activities and for other resources

needed by the school and the learners.

Factors Affecting the Academic Performance of Grade I Pupils in Victoria District: Basis for Academic Enhancement Program

Florencia G. Matibag (2014) MAED – Administration and Supervision

The descriptive research determined the level of

academic performance of the grade I pupils in Victoria

District as basis for academic enhancement program. The

researcher selected three hundred seven (307) pupils for

the school year 2013-2014 as respondents of the study. Data

were gathered using the questionnaires.

Based on the results, the following conclusions were

drawn: More female than male pupils attend ECE or

Kindergarten Program and belong to low economic status.

They comprise the Grade I Classes.

Regular supervision by parents and good rapport with

siblings make up for minimal parent‟s discipline.

Good classroom management practices, sufficient school

facilities, and usage of appropriate instructional

materials and teaching strategies are evident.

The Grade I pupils need further improvement in their

academic performance.

Home and school factors play an important role in the

academic performance of Grade I Pupils.

On the basis of its findings, it is therefore

recommended that: Teachers conduct home visitation to know

the pupils‟ background that will be helpful in

understanding their needs and capabilities; parents monitor

not only their children‟s academic performance but their

character-building as well; discipline can be maintained at

home by making them follow rules and regulations; school

administrators give acknowledgement to good performance of

GRADUATE SCHOOL 13

teachers for them to maintain their good practices;

teachers and parents collaborate to improve the academic

performance of the pupils; regular teacher-parent

conference be held and follow-up or enrichment activities

be provided by the teachers; parents help and guide the

pupils in their homework and follow-up activities;

researches on how to improve the academic performance of

the pupils be conducted.

Behavioral Problems and Performance Level of Grade III Pupils in Papandayan Elementary School:

A Basis for Proposed Guidance Program Jerome M. dela Cruz (2015)

MAED – Administration and Supervision

This study determined the behavioral problems in terms

of sensory processing disorder, aggressiveness,

inappropriate language and inattentiveness on the academic

performance of grade III pupils in Papandayan Elementary

School using descriptive correlation research.

The study focused on the present conditions using the

descriptive method which is valuable in providing facts on

which scientific judgments maybe based. Data were gathered

through questionnaire, documentary analysis, personal

observation and library research in revealing the status

and/or the existing behavioral problems among pupils. It

also further explained the level of performance of each

respondent.

The following conclusions were arrived at based on the

findings of the study.

The status of the behavioral problems in terms of

sensory processing disorder, aggressiveness, inappropriate

language and inattentiveness is one of the impediments to

academic success and development on the part of the pupils.

The academic performance of pupils is low. With pupils

unable to function well in class due to many factors like

behavioral problems that affect study habits. There is a

significant relationship between the behavioral problems in

terms of sensory processing disorder, aggressiveness,

inappropriate language and inattentiveness and academic

performance of grade III pupils.

GRADUATE SCHOOL 20

In the light of the conclusions derived under the

conditions in which the investigation was conducted, the

researcher offers the following recommendations: Parents

should be encouraged to further support the needs of their

children so that they can focus on their studies.

The importance of good behavior and character of the

pupils should be explained to parents by the teachers.

Teachers should continue conducting home visitation

from time to time to inform the parents about the behavior

and performance of their children in school.

Parents should be aware of the pupils‟ emotional needs

so that they can be adequately provided.

Administrators should provide teachers seminar

workshops/trainings about proper handling of pupils with

behavioral problems.

A proposed guidance program for teachers is

recommended to be implemented.

Finally, a follow-up study should be conducted using

other factors both internal and external to find out the

reasons for the low academic performance of the pupils.

The Level of Performance of Selected Public Elementary Schools in Gloria District: Basis for Enhancement Program

Roosevelt F. Ferrancol (2015) MAED – Administration and Supervision

The researcher analyzed the level of performance of

selected public elementary schools in Gloria District: A

basis for enhancement program.

The study is a quantitative research employing

descriptive – correlational. Descriptive study was

undertaken in order to ascertain and describe the

characteristics of the variables of interest in a

situation. The correlational study was employed,

consistent with the goal of correlational research which is

to find out whether one or more variables can predict other

variables.

Among the variables compared were the status of

selected public elementary schools in Gloria District in

terms of pupils, staff/teachers‟, physical plant and

facilities, fiscal/technical resources, curriculum,

community and the level of performance of selected public

elementary schools in Gloria District in terms of pupils‟

development, staff/teachers‟ development, physical plant

and facilities development, fiscal/technical resources

development, curriculum development, and community

development.

Based on the findings the following conclusions were

drawn: Public elementary schools in Gloria District draw

strength from the status of their curriculum, pupils,

teachers, physical plant and facilities, community and

fiscal/technical resources, which help provide quality

instruction for learners‟ development. The high extent

potential of public elementary schools in Gloria District

to stir development centers more on curriculum, pupils,

staff/teachers, community and physical plant and

GRADUATE SCHOOL 29

facilities. Meanwhile, the status of public elementary

schools in Gloria District in terms of pupils‟

staff/teachers‟ physical plant and facilities, curriculum

and community profiles significantly relates to the

achievement of development performances. However,

fiscal/technical resources profile does not have any

positive impact on fiscal/technical resources development.

This study‟s proposed enhancement program is a very helpful

tool for public elementary schools in Gloria District to

sustain its development performance on track.

Deterrents to the Academic Achievement of Fourth Year Students of Bayuin National High School:

Basis for Proposed Intervention Program Anabelle D. Mutya (2015)

MAED – Administration and Supervision

This research study determined the learning

environments that hinder the academic achievement of fourth

year students of Bayuin National High School. The

researcher used self-made questionnaire to find out the

perception of the students on different learning

environments such as home (parental involvement,

educational facilities), school (classroom management,

teachers‟ attitudes), and community (nature of the

community and support of the community).

Descriptive method was used in determining the status

of the learning environments.

Correlation method on the other hand, was used in

finding the relationship between the status of the learning

environments and the level of academic achievement of the

respondents.

Results revealed that parents were somehow involved in

their students‟ education. Students were provided only with

the basic educational facilities at home. The status of

classroom management was effective. There was a high extent

of handling teachers‟ attitudes in the teaching-learning

process. The nature and support of the community influences

the academic achievement of the students.

On the other hand, the average grades of the

respondents were very low despite the active support and

involvement of home, school and community .The study found

out also that there was a very low correlation between the

learning environments such as home (parental involvement,

educational facilities), school (classroom management,

GRADUATE SCHOOL 39

teachers‟ attitudes), and community (nature and support of

the community) and the students‟ academic achievement.

Based on the findings, it is recommended that: Parents

of Bayuin National High School should continue to be

involved in the academic affairs of their children;

Educational facilities should be provided not only in

school but also at home. Parents should also give

importance on the availability of the major facilities at

home;

Teachers of Bayuin National High School should

continue the techniques and strategies in classroom

management and in handling their attitudes every time they

teach their lessons;

The community can find ways to help the students in

achieving students‟ education. They should need to be aware

of their functions and responsibilities in the education of

the students;

A follow-up research can be made to increase students‟

academic achievement considering other variables such as

students‟ interest in performing academic task and

students‟ extent of study habits; and the proposed

intervention program crafted by the researcher may be

adapted.

Predictors in Learning Mathematics and the Level of Performance of Grade Six Pupils in Selected Schools in Puerto Galera District:

Basis for Intervention Program Nemesia D. Singson (2015)

MAED – Administration and Supervision

Mathematics is an essential discipline because of its

applied role in the individual and society (as cited by

dela Cruz, 2010).

This research focused on the relationship of the

predictors in learning mathematics and the mathematical

performance of grade VI pupils in selected schools in

Puerto Galera District.

The findings were used in the proposed intervention

program in learning mathematics. Self-made questionnaire

was used by the researcher to gather information on the

status of pupil factor in terms of study habits and

interest; the perception of the respondents on teacher

factor in terms of personality, attitudes towards teaching

mathematics and strategies in teaching mathematics; and the

perception of the respondents on the extent of adequacy of

school plant in terms of facilities and instructional

materials. The pupils‟ average grades for the first, second

and third grading periods were also gathered to determine

the level of their performance in mathematics. The

respondents were 147 grade six pupils in selected schools

in Puerto Galera.

Results of the study conclude that facilities affect

the pupils‟ performance in mathematics to a very high

extent.

The following are the recommendations based on the

findings and conclusions: 1) The grade VI pupils of Puerto

Galera should be constantly encouraged to develop study

GRADUATE SCHOOL 54

habits and interest in Mathematics by giving them rigid

activities and assignments at home, 2) Teachers should be

inspiring and motivational in teaching the subject to

strengthen the attitudes and interests of pupils towards

the subject, 3) Teachers should also be updated about the

recent trends and techniques in the teaching of

mathematics. They should therefore be encouraged to attend

more trainings and seminars related to this, 4)Intervention

activities in Mathematics should be employed within the

school as a regular academic development programs, 5)

School heads and Principals of Puerto Galera district

should continue to update the instructional resources and

equipment used by the teachers in teaching Mathematics, 6)

The grade VI pupils should undergo assessment in all

learning areas in Mathematics to prepare reinforcement

activities relative to the school‟s desire to enhance

competence, 7) A similar study should be conducted on other

variables not included in the present study.

Basis for a Proposed Oral Language Development Program Alona A. Agbulos (2014)

MAED – Teaching English Language

This quantitative research utilizing descriptive

correlational method titled “ The Oral English Language

Competence of the Grade VII Students in Oriental Mindoro

Academy (OMA): Basis for a Proposed Oral Language

Development Program” determined the relationship between

the status of students‟ profile in terms of average grade

in English, study habits and motivation towards English

language; the status of English instruction in terms of

classroom management, learning activities and teaching

techniques and the level of oral English language

competence in terms of vocabulary, pronunciation and

grammar of the Grade VII students in OMA S. Y. 2012-2013.

Findings of the study revealed that the status of

students‟ profile in terms of average grade in English,

study habits and motivation towards English language was

average. Likewise, the status of English instruction in

terms of classroom management and learning activities was

also average. Meanwhile, teaching technique was superior.

It also revealed that respondents‟ vocabulary and

grammar competence was at a low level. On the other hand,

pronunciation competence was average.

It was concluded that there is a significant

relationship between the status of students‟ profile in

terms of average grade in English and the level of oral

English language competence. There is also a significant

relationship between study habits and the level of oral

English language competence in terms of vocabulary and

grammar competence. All the remaining independent variables

GRADUATE SCHOOL 62

are found to have no significant relationship to the level

of the students‟ oral English language competence.

Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, an

oral language development program was proposed.

Factors Affecting the Extent of English Language Test Anxiety of the Intermediate Pupils of M. Pesig Elementary School:

Basis for a Proposed Intervention Program Charisma D. Tamayosa (2015)

MAED – Teaching English Language

As testing becomes an achievement marker for

elementary school children, test anxiety would naturally

follow for them. This study determined the status of

factors affecting the English language test anxiety of

intermediate pupils of M. Pesig Elementary School.

This study also investigated the extent of test

anxiety and the relationship between the status of factors

such as gender, age, grade level and socio-economic status.

The group respondents for the study consisted of 59

learners from the intermediate level of the said school. A

profile questionnaire and scale about the extent of anxiety

were used to collect data. The collected data were utilized

to provide a descriptive and correlational analysis to

address the research questions.

The findings of the study showed that the status of

the factors affecting test anxiety was good. Meanwhile, the

extent of test anxiety on terms or communication

apprehension, personal discomfort and fear of negative

evaluation was moderate.

The findings also revealed that the correlation

between language behavior and ear of negative evaluation

was significantly evident and the other variables were not

significantly correlated.

The results of the study suggest the use of the

proposed English Language test intervention program.

Antas ng Paggamit ng mga Salitang Kolokyal sa Komunikasyong Akademiko sa Antas Sekondarya

sa Pampublikong Paaralan sa Distrito ng Roxas, Oriental Mindoro Anna Liza F. Atienza (2014)

Bayanan I, Bayanan II, Biga, Bucayao, Camansihan, Gutad,

Lalud, Managpi, M. Pesig, at St. Cruz.

Ginamit ng mananaliksik ang disenyong kwantitatibong

pananaliksik.

pagsasalita. Nakakalungkot mang isipin ay ito ang

katotohanan.
