3rd-place winners (left-to-right, above) Lleyton

Davidson, Elisabeth Miller, Eli Gerick and Elena Miller

represented GPMS at the February 2, 2019 Math Counts

meet. The team was selected by Mrs. Biediger, and

some volunteered. The team can only have 4 students.

Mrs. Biediger selected them from her UIL team. There

were additional students who went to the November

practice round. Eight students participated in the

practice meet last fall.

(Continued on next page)

(Math Counts, continued from previous page)

The Nueces Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers and some local companies

sponsor the event each year to challenge 6th-8th grade students with engineering-type problem

solving. The competition consists of several different tests and a team test, like the UIL Math

competitions. Currently they provide a stipend of up to $500 each competition year to up to two

teachers per school for attendance at a free workshop in the fall with continuing education credits

($100), the practice ($200) and the competition ($200). Mrs. Biediger will be at the meet as coach.

“If any teachers would like to help me at the competition, they would be eligible for a partial

stipend,” she said.

Members of the GPMS Math UIL team calculated in a MathCounts meet on Dec. 8, 2018

sponsored by Nueces Chapter of Texas Society of Professional Engineers. Events include

Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown - a buzzer beating live action contest. Quinn Smith, 8th

grade, placed 10th overall in the individual competition. Contestants (pictured above, left-to-

right) were Elena Miller, Lleyton Davidson, Peyton Felchak, Olivia Kohleffel, Luke Kohleffel,

Eli Gerick, Quinn Smith, and Austin Nguyen.

Cats Club

By Kendall Lopez

On Jan 11, students that were eligible to go on the Cats Club field trip went to Bowlero in

Corpus. Students were provided with a $7 arcade card, and most students brought extra money

for food, drinks, and Laser tag. Students had 2 hours to play and bowl. Students had their own

personal lane to bowl in with as many people as they want to bowl in the lane with them.

Students could also order food from their lanes, as well as order dessert, drinks, and appetizers.

In the arcade portion, there were games such as Flappy Birds, Angry Birds, and even a virtual

roller coaster ride. Students could go in the photo booth to remember the trip, and they can save

up tickets to get prizes in a machine. When the 2 hours was up, students and teachers loaded up

the buses to come back to school. After returning to school, students ate their ordered sack

lunches or their lunch brought from home. Then, students volunteered to

play rounds of volleyball.

The next Cat's Club will be March 21st for 6th grade, and March 22nd

for 7th & 8th grade. We will be going to Jumping World in Flour Bluff.

Meet Mrs. San Juanita

Perez

By Ginny Carey, Photo by, Eagle Imaging

What do you do at GPMS? I teach 6th grade

Science. I try to inspire my students to

appreciate and respect the world around

them and understand how it works.

Education/experience: Bachelor’s Degree

from University of Texas at San Antonio in

2006, I have been a teacher at G-PISD since

spring 2007. For 12 years I was a member of the Texas Regional

Collaborative for Excellence in Science Education: this organization

allowed me to grow as an educator. TRC has given me some valuable

experience that I have been able to bring back to my classroom. For 2

years I worked with the UT STEM Center to expand my knowledge in

technology and Computer Science. I am always ready to learn more

and find resources to use in my classroom!

Hobbies: I love spending time with my family! I also love to travel. This

past summer I was able to travel to Canada; while there, I visited

Niagara Falls and it was amazing! It is my goal to visit every National

park in the U.S.; I have already been to most of the parks in the west.

Favorite Book(s): I also love to read. I currently have two favorites:

Fish in a Tree by Lynda Hunt and What If? By Randall Munroe (I often

refer to this book during class if the content is relevant). I have many

students that like to ask “WHAT IF questions, and I will not ever

answer a “what if” question because there are usually too many

variable to consider to come up with a precise answer.

(continued on next page.)

Mrs. San Juanita Perez (continued from previous page.)

Favorite Game(s): Monopoly, Risk, Scrabble and Words with Friends.

Family game night occurs at least once a month in my home and we are

Halen, George Strait, Joe Satriani and Fleetwood Mac.

Something about me that might surprise people: When I was in 7th grade

I missed half the school year! It is not as fun as it sounds…… I was

homeschooled because I broke my ankle into really bad and was not

allowed to go to school. I had to have two surgeries to fix it and was

in a cast for almost 5 months.

Bull with a Red ApronBy: Cadence PhelpsLife may want to bring you down, don’t let it. Lift yourself from the restraints holding you away from it all. Reality hits like a bull, it will knock you down over and over again. Sometimes you may feel as if you’re in a rodeo, keep going and don’t let go. Fight it with a red apron, as if to say, “Come at me, I’m willing to take the hit.” Sometimes when you take the hit, it hurts. Don’t let that stop you, heal from it and keep going. Sometimes others will put on their red aprons and run with you. In some situations, more than one bull will come at you and you have to fight alone. Keep fighting until you beat them. Never give up and fight for what you will.

A&E (Arts & Entertainment) MascotBy: Isabella Baietto

GT Field Trip By Marky Trevino

On January 29, GT (Gifted & Talented) students went on a field trip to Early Scholars

Academy in Corpus Christi. The theme of the trip was communication and careers.

The students had to escape 9 different themed escape rooms. The students learned

about different careers associated with the themes. The themes include a rainforest,

the polar region, submarine and ocean, a greenhouse studying plants and insects, an

animal room studying wild and domestic animals, healthy living, space, a community

cityscape, and Earth’s elements. The escape rooms help develop collaboration,

problem solving, and critical thinking for the students. The students spent the time

after the trip at the Portland fire station and learned about being a firefighter.

Hopefully they all learned a lot and had a

good time.

Scavenger Hunt By: Marky Trevino

The GPMS Gazette has created a new idea. We are creating a

super scavenger hunt. We will have questions that come from

previous Gazettes, and you could answer them for the chance to

win a prize of... who knows?

* When was the first pep rally this school year?

* Who wrote “The Sun Shines” poem?

* When does the chess club meet?

* Who wrote the comic about the little duck?

* Who is the GPMS Gazette’s Executive Editor?

* Where are the student printers?

* When was the Halloween Dance?

* When was the first picture day?

* When was the Favorites Dance?

* Where was the first Cats Club supposed to have taken place?

If you have all the answers, use your GP student e-mail account

to contact Marky Trevino for your reward.

Opinions Jayden Campbell, Editor Welcome to the Opinions section of the March Gazette; let's get started!

Today we are starting with something new: Letters to the

Gazette’s editors!

To start off the letters, let's begin with Style! Dear Style Editor,

To start off with, the pictures that you take are unique. They’re always pictures of something

happy and with color and pop. Whenever you take pictures of someone or

something you can tell that they have meaning, and they make the Gazette

more fun to read and look at. But even though you’re an awesome

photographer and you have beautiful style, you can always make it even better

by adding different stuff and thinking of new ideas to add to the Gazette.

Maybe you can do different colors for each theme or different types of pictures

for each section of the Gazette. Honestly, other than that, I think that you’re

doing a fantastic job! You’d be a great photographer when you get older,

because you take great pictures, they always look perfect.

Sincerely, Cheyenne Rounds

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now, let's go to A&E!
Dear A&E Editor,
I’m a big fan of your section of the Gazette! I personally love the comics and art pieces that you feature,
like in the December 2018 edition, for example. But of course, there’s always room for improvement!
For one, what's with the crazy borders? In the January 2019 edition, the snowflake design is a little large
for the page and overlaps some of the text. Then, in the February 2019 edition,
the border is, to put it simply, of terrible quality. Maybe you can keep them a
little tamer in future editions? Of course, there’s also the obvious shortage of
content, which really can’t be blamed on you. Something you can do to fix it,
however, is to respectfully encourage artists, whether they act, draw, or write, to
create and submit work for you to publish! It’s no guarantee, but it’s better than
nothing.
Sincerely, Diego Aguillon.
Dear A&E editor,
I’m writing about the band news page in the February Gazette. I loved the format
you used by putting the 1st chair people all the way to the right. It’s organized and I can
see the information easily. The only problem I have is that you should have put what
chair every person got. This would have shown which sections dominated. For example,
the saxophones dominated and got the top three chairs: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. You could have
also put the grade they’re in so people know if a 7th grader beat an 8th grader. These
things are super impressive, so you should show these things next time. Thank you.
-Vincent Nguyen
Dear Isabella Baietto,
I really enjoy your section of the Gazette! Don’t get me wrong, it’s amazing, but there are a few things I
wish you would add. I love that you put up pictures and comics, but I wish there were more. I think you
would benefit from more comics like on a Sunday newspaper. Also, more
drawings! Maybe you could do what you missed of drawings from past Gazettes
or maybe go through Gazettes from last year.
Since your part of the Gazette is art AND entertainment, you could not only put
pictures, drawings, and comics, but you could also add short stories, writing
prompts, and monthly jokes that will leave people laughing all month! I hope to
see some of these in the future Gazette articles.
Sincerely, Skyla Martini
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On to News!

News Editor,

Your article (about Communities in Schools) was very informing, yet it didn’t catch my attention. It lacks

vivid colors. It looks like you were just rushing and trying to get it done in time. That’s something I would

do LOL. Mostly all the pages have borders around them but not yours. The headings were in a simple

format. I think that adding borders and different type of lettering would make it

better. Everything looks the same through the page, so I think that’s what makes

it not worthy of catching my attention. Maybe spending more time on it would

help? I don’t know, man. I wouldn’t know how long it took you, but the

information is really good; you should keep that on there. Also, not a lot of people

know who Mrs.Abby is, so it would help if you added a picture of her. That way

the readers know who to donate Ziploc bags to. Sincerely, Angela Lumbreras

Now on to sports!

Dear Sports Editor,

In my opinion your work is very good, but I believe you could use some extra help to make it even

better. You could start off with some extra information about the coaches; for

example: list someone background information on them or winning streaks

they had in the past. For athletes, I think you could talk about all the practices

and work they put into this school. As an athlete myself it takes lots of hard

work and rules you have to follow; it’s a big task and we set examples for all, so

talking about some of these rules and examples we set could give someone

thinking about becoming an athlete information before they go into it. Thank

you for reading this and hearing my opinions.

Sincerley, Brynn German

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On to the People section!
Dear People Editor,
I find your section about the staff here at G-P Middle School very
interesting. If you were to include students in your section it would be
even more interesting. There are some very talented kids at GPMS. Why
not include students as well as teachers? Instead of asking “what is your
education or experience?” you could instead ask “what extra-curricular
activities do you participate in?” Another question you might ask students
is “what is your favorite part of GPMS?” Including students as well as
staff members in the People Section would allow the students of GPMS to
shine.
-Laura Bennett
thoughts you want to share, please use your student e-mail account to contact our
Career Cruising
By Hailey Rasmussen
Career Cruising is a website that assists students in finding out what careers they might
consider studying in college. Once logged into the website, there
is a test where people can answer questions about things they
like. When the test is complete, the students will see a list of 40
possible careers that they should look into. Some careers may
include an accountant or lawyer. Students use this program
throughout middle and high school as they find out more and more about what they enjoy
most.
Robotics News By Bella Rodriguez
On February 2, the Gregory Portland Robotics team
went to competition. They started off strong. After
time had passed the Robotics team began to fall
behind, but they still had core values and the project
portion left. When the Robotics team had believed
they lost, they came in top five. Now the Robotics
team is working hard with determination for their
next competition. The competition is on March 23 in
San Antonio. See the April gazette for the results.
Did you know that you can help
the planet and the robotics team at the
same time?
Simply bring your printer’s empty inkjet cartridges to C108 and the
robotics team will recycle them for you.
Remember: inkjet cartridges will fit in the palm of your hand. We cannot
recycle larger cartridges.
Please e-mail ideas for technology-related content to our Technology
