Principal sir’s Message

“Everything exists because other things exist!” - Joey Lawsin, Originemology02

Dear Students and faculties, As we pass February 2021, we cherish our offline exam times back!! Things are coming back to its normal. It’s time to check our online teaching – learning strength in form of exams and mid semester tests. Given the current circumstances we work togeth-er to maintain health and safety standards, while sustaining the academic excellence and personal-ized attention. Education plays an important role in enabling person to face a real life situation with adequate knowledge. Looking back to the tough times, I appreciate all of your efforts in overcom-ing the pandemic situation and continuing with the teaching – learning process in a different way and not only we conduct our curriculums but continu-ously thrive to improve ourselves. GECR organized webinars / expert talks, Mental Health Counselling Helpline, Online lecture, Student Developer Clubs, and Association with MOOCs Platforms like Coursera during lockdown. Our institute is preparing for getting ac-creditation from National Board of Accreditation (NBA). NBA focuses on outcome based education (OBE) which is student centric. In OBE, at the end of educational experience, students are expected to have outcomes. Every course has course out-comes (COs). At the time of learning course, you must be aware of course outcomes. At the end of graduation, every student will achieve programme outcomes (POs). There are Programme Specific Outcomes defined specifically for every depart-ment. It describes what students are expected to be able to do after completion of graduation. Pro-gram educational objectives (PEOs) are broad statements that describe what graduates are ex-pected to attain within few years of graduation.

All the departments have defined our PEOs. PEOs describe what you will be after five years of your graduation. Vision of our institute and department, Mission of our institute and department, PO, PSO and PEO of our department are available on our website, MOODLE as well as displayed in labo-ratory, lobbies and classroom. All the students must be familiar with this terminology of outcome based education. Demand of Computer Engineering is in-creasing day by day and it is necessary to update faculties and students with latest technology. Computer engineers must learn about Program-ming languages like Python, R, C, C++, Java etc. Internet of Things, Data Science, Cloud comput-ing, Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, Deep learning, Virtual reality, Augmented reality and cognitive radio. You need to attend MOOC and other skill development programmes to bridge the gap of curriculum and industry requirements. Computer Engineering field is becoming too vast that it is not possible to cover everything in the curriculum. Depending on interest of the student, he or she has to select any one topic and study it in depth but for selection of the topic, it is nec-essary to get introductory knowledge of techno-logical advancements. Student should select such topics to deliver seminar and discuss with each other and faculties. MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) are available for such advance topics. Students should attend any one course during their winter vacation or summer vacation period or even during academic term. Students must have five cognitive skills Conscientiousness, Perseverance, Innovative-ness, taking Initiatives and Problem Solving. We have grant under student start up and innovation policy (SSIP). Take maximum benefit of it for your innovative projects. Find out real life challenges present in the society and industries and work for the solution. Come up with best idea and sub-mit proposal to get funding from SSIP grant. May the coming time fill up new colors to your carrier pathway.

Wish you best of luck,Dr. C.H. Vithalani Principal,Government Engineering College,Rajkot

I. Internet Of Things(IOT)

Introduction The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging paradigm that enables the communication between electronic devices and sensors through the internet in order to facilitate our lives. IoT use smart devices and internet to provide innovative solutions to various challenges and issues related to various business, governmental and public/private industries across the world.

Challenges of IOT

Security and Privacy One of the most important and challenging issues in the IoT is the security and privacy due to several threats, cyber attacks, risks and vulnerabilities. Security mechanismsmust be embedded at every layer of IoT architecture to prevent security threats and attacks.

Ethics, law and regulatory rights Another issue for IoT developers is the ethics, law and regulatory rights. There are cer-tain rules and regulations to maintain the standard, moral values and to prevent the people from violating them. Therefore, this issue must be taken into consideration to maintain and improve the trust among people for the use of IoT devices and systems.

IOT Architecture and technologies

The IoT architecture consists of five important layers that defines all the func-tionalities of IoT systems. These layers are perception layer, network layer, middleware layer, application layer, business layer. At the bottom of IoT architecture, perception lay-er exists that consists of physical devices i.e. sensors, RFID chips, barcodes etc. and oth-er physical objects connected in IoT network. These devices collects information in order to

deliver it to the network layer. Network layer works as a transmission medium to deliver the information from perception layer to the information processing system. This transmission of information may use any wired/wireless medium along with 3G/4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth etc. Next level layer is known as middleware layer. The main task of this layer is to process the informa-tion received from the network layer and make decisions based on the results achieved from ubiquitous computing. Next, this processed information is used by application layer for global device management. On the top of the architecture, there is a business layer which control the overall IoT system, its applications and services. The business layer visualizes the information and statistics received from the application layer and further used this knowledge to plan fu-ture strategies.

Change is the end result of all true learning. – Leo Buscaglia13

Scalability, availability and reliability A system is scalable if it is possible to add new services, equipments and devices with-out degrading its performance. The main issue with IoT is to support a large number of devices with different memory, processing, storage power and bandwidth. Another important issue that must be taken into consideration is the availability. Scalability and availability both should be deployed together in the layered framework of IoT.

Quality of service Quality of Service (QoS) is another important factor for IoT. QoS can be definedas a measure to evaluate the quality, efficiency and performance of IoT devices, systems and architecture. The important and required QoS metrics for IoT applications are reliability, cost, energy consumption, security, availability and service time. A smarter IoT ecosystem must fulfill the requirements of QoS standards. Also, to ensure the reliability of any IoT service and device, its QoS metrics must be defined first.

Major IOT applications Emerging economy, environmental and health care:- IoT is completely devoted to pro-vide emerging public and financial benefits and development to the society and people. This includes a wide range of public facilities economic development, water quality maintenance, well-being, industrialization etc. Overall, IoT is working hard to accomplish the social, health and economic goals of United Nations advancement step. This area needs research for the development of high quality materials in order to create new IoT devices with lower energy consumption rate.

Smart city, Transport vehicles IoT is transforming the traditional civil structure of the society into high tech structure with the concept of smart city, smart home and smart vehicles and transport. Another im-portant issue is to think about environmental aspect of smart city. This can help to lower down the congestion in the city. Furthermore, smart devices with optimum cost should be designed to be incorporated in all range vehicles to monitor the activity of engine. IoT is also very effec-tive in maintaining the vehicle’s health. Self driving cars have the potential to communicate with other self driving vehicles by the means of intelligent sensors.

II. STARLINK – Future of Internet

The dream of being able to access the internet, no matter where you live might become a reality sooner than you might think. In 2015, SpaceX, the company owned by technology billionaire Elon Musk, announced it was developing such a service called Starlink. But what is Starlink, exactly? Starlink is an upcoming, and highly ambitious, space internet service.

I. HOW DOES STARLINK WORK?

Once it becomes fully operational,Starlink will be able to offer internet access from virtually anywhere on the planet. The goal of Starlink effort is to launch thousands of small satellites, all of which will be in low Earth orbit. They will be able to transmit fast internet signals down to Earth.

II. WHAT ARE THE SATELLITES LIKE?

Each satellite in this Starlink project weighs just 260 kilograms. They are basically very flat and then when 60 of them are placed inside one of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets. When they are put in orbit, a single large solar array comes out to power the satellite. The main portion includes four powerful antennas for internet transmissions. They also have lasers that connect each satellite with four others in orbit. Finally, they include ion thrusters that use krypton gas. This allows them to stay in orbit longer even at these lower distances from Earth.

III. HOW FAST WILL STARLINK INTERNET SPEEDS BE LIKE?

The SpaceX Starlink satellites will be in low orbit, around 563.3 kilometers above the Earth. Because of that relatively short distance, SpaceX claims the latency should be between 25ms and 35ms. That should be fast enough for most internet tasks, including gaming. Down-load speeds should also be pretty quick, at about 1Gbps.

III. Sentiment Analysis

Sentiment Analysis or Opinion Mining is the computational treatment of opinions, sentiments and subjectivity of text. The opinion seeking behaviour of people for good decision making has greatly enhanced the importance of social media as a platform for exchange of information. This trend has led to a sudden spurt of information overflow on the Web. The huge volume of such information has to be technically processed for segregating the relevant knowledge. Senti-ment analysis is the popular method extensively used for this purpose.

The sentiment analysis is widely used for extracting social data and makes the business process profitably. The applications of sentiment analysis are Brand monitoring and reputation management that provides understanding of how the consumers perceive particular brand/product/service, Market Research and Competitor Analysis that is helpful to collect insights on a marketing campaign for a new product release or view comparisons with other similar products, Product Analysis that is used to fetch specific remarks regarding product and its perfor-mance, Customer Need Analysis and Customer Feedback analysis.

Sentiment classification can be performed at different levels like document level, sentence level and aspect level. In document level, whole text consisting of multiple sentences is tagged as positive negative or neutral. But each sentence may have different polarities hence sentence level classification takes into ac-count sentiments of all terms in each sentence to formulate an overall sentiment for a sentence that is under consideration. For example “The cafe is great and coffee is delicious” is considered positive and “I would not recommend this cafe as it is very expensive” considered as negative. Many times it is difficult to detect the sentiment in sentence also. For example “The taste is great but service is dreadful”. It contains both positive and negative sentiment. While the sentence

presents certain facts or observations, it also infuses a sentiment indirectly. In previous example, the reviewer or poster of the comment has aired a negative outlook. To offset such kind of challenges, analyses at word or phrase level need to be conducted. Aspect level aims at addressing the shortcomings of document and sentence levels. In previous example, two aspects can be considered with different polarity <food, positive>, <service, negative>.

Classification Techniques From available research on sentiment analysis, sentiment classification techniques can be segregated into three categories: Machine Learning Approach, Lexicon-based Approach and Hybrid Approach.

Machine learning approach uses machine learning algorithms to predict sentiment from past observations. An example dataset along with their corre-sponding tags is used for training classification model. During the training process, the model transforms text data into vectors and identifies a pattern to associate each vector with one of the pre-defined tags (“Positive”, “Negative”, Neutral”). After constructing model with predefined set of constraints, it can start making predictions to classify unseen data.

Lexicon-based approach involves determination of polarity by employing opinion words from sentiment dictionary and matches those with data. It main-tains a dictionary of positive terms (like good, beautiful, useful, interesting etc) and negative terms (such as bad, ugly, uncomfortable, frustrated etc). For given text, it counts the number of positive and negative words that appear, and as-signs the corresponding sentiment. If a phrase contains more positive than neg-ative words, it’s tagged as Positive.

Aside from involving machine learning approaches or Lexicon based ap-proach, there are few research techniques that involve a mixture of both known as Hybrid Approach. It extracts features from text using lexicon based approach and applies machine learning to find polarity.

Challenges Even though numerous research works have been carried put in this field through diverse models, sentiment analysis is still considered a problem with so many challenges. Some of them are described as following.

4. Bodhitree e-learning system

Government Engineering College, Rajkot has setup Bodhitree to encourage personalized self learning as well as instructor guided flipped classrooms.

Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow. – Anthony 18

Portal is accessible online at https://bodhitree.gecrajkot.ac.in/

BodhiTree is an online learning platform developed at IIT Bombay with the mission of pro-viding accessible quality technical education for all, through personalized, flexible, and hands -on complete learning. BodhiTree hosts interactive multimedia books including lab manuals that mimic classroom teaching. Books are made of chapters which in turn are composed of inter-active videos (interactivity is achieved via periodic pop-up quizzes embedded within the video), auto-graded practice problems, reference material, slides etc. These books can be accessed by students via a smartphone as well as a web-browser.

Implicit Sentiment and Sarcasm: A sentence may have an implicit sentiment even without the presence of any sentiment bearing words. For example, “How can anyone sit through this movie? ” and “Watching this movie is as good as watching paints dry”. They do not explicitly carry any negative sentiment bearing words although they are negative. Thus identifying semantics is more important than syntax detection.

Domain Dependency: There are many words whose polarity changes from domain to domain. For example, “The story was unpredictable” and “The steering of the car is unpredict-able”. In first sentence sentiment is positive while in second it is negative.

Entity Identification: A text or sentence may have multiple entities. It is extremely important to find out the entity towards which the opinion is directed. For example “Samsung is better than Nokia”. The example is positive for Samsung but negative for Nokia.

Handling Negation: Negation is a way of reversing the polarity of words, phrases and even sen-tences. Consider example “The show was not interesting” and “I dislike the show” Here words “not”, “dis” change the original meaning of the words “interesting” or “like”.

Although sentiment analysis tasks are challenging due to their natural lan-guage processing origins, much progress has been made over the last few years due to the high demand for it. Not only do companies want to know how their products and services are perceived by consumers (and compare to competi-tors), but consumers want to know the opinions of others before making buying decisions. The growing need for product insights – and the technical challenges currently facing the field – will keep sentiment analysis and opinion mining rele-vant for the foreseeable future. Sentiment Analysis is one of those technologies, the usefulness of which wholly depends on the understanding of its capabilities and can be considered critical in terms of socio-economic standpoint.
