“It’s pretty exciting to see these guys

come through. They are who you build your club on.”

Paul Johnson

“We need to go back to basics and play more of those winning quarters like the second and third quarters in that Round 8 game than the losing ones!” While the East Perth side might be laden with West Coast players due to their alignment, Johnson said there was still some good, strong talent coming through. “We’ve had guys like Thomas Hodgson (Round 9), Clayton Giblett (Round 1) and Mitchell Lague (Round 7) make their debut this season,” the former West Coast, Melbourne and Hawthorn player said. “When we played Claremont we had 10 players who had played less than 10 WAFL games, including Eagles players and local boys. It’s pretty exciting to see these guys come through. They are who you build your club on.” Heading down to the traditional Fremantle Derby between East Fremantle and South Fremantle, also being played on Monday, history shows that the last nine derbies have been won by the away team. The Sharks have a busy event schedule at ATOM Stadium for the Derby. Entertainment on the day will include Jayda D’Agostino performing at the President’s lunch, the National Anthem by Sam Roberts-Smith before the league game, Dave Warner and the Dicemen performing in the main hall after the league game and the presentation of the Foundation Trophy and Zaidee’s Medal as well as bouncy castles, face painting, balloon twisting and inflatable boxing in the free kid’s zone on the hill. You could also go in the running to win a Grand in the Hand! Fill in an entry form at the gate for a chance to win $1000! A lucky East Fremantle and South Fremantle supporter will each win $1000.

TWICE East Perth ruckman Paul Johnson has captained the WAFL State team – and twice they have won. In 2013 he led the WA side to a drought-breaking victory over Victoria, while last Saturday he helped WA break a deadlock over South Australia. WA now leads 47-46 in their head-to-head clashes since 1904. Johnson also played for WA in 2012 when they lost to South Australia in Adelaide. Now the 30-year-old is focused on pushing the Royals back up into the top five and into finals contention in the second half of the season. On the TABTouch market the Royals started the season as the favourites to win the 2015 premiership. Reigning premiers and current ladder-leaders Subiaco ranked sixth in that betting market. Now after nine rounds of the season, last year’s runner-up is the fourth favourite to win the flag while sitting seventh on the ladder – percentage behind Swan Districts and ahead of Claremont – with three wins and five losses. At the same time last year as they started their run towards a grand final berth, the Royals were third on the ladder with six wins to their credit. The next week they jumped to second position and then after Round 11 they landed in first position where they remained for the rest of the season. The Royals lost their last three games heading into the State game bye last weekend after claiming victories over Swans in Round 2, Subiaco in Round 3 (when Johnson didn’t play) and Perth in Round 6. “We’ve only lost three games and in two of those we were in winning positions,” Johnson said. “Our consistency from quarter to quarter let us down in those two losses so that’s what we need to work on now. “Along with Swans and Claremont we’re just one game out of the top five, so it’s pretty deceiving to look at the ladder at the moment – it just shows how even the competition is right now.” Very little separates East Perth and West Perth heading into this Monday’s WA Day clash. From their 334 meetings the Royals have won 165, the Falcons 163 and there have been six draws and their last encounter was only three weeks ago when the Falcons prevailed by 38 points up at Arena Joondalup. “It’s been such little time between games for us against West Perth that it’s pretty fresh in our minds where we went wrong and where we went right,” Johnson said.

I would like to start this week’s column by reflecting on last week’s fair at the Morley Recreation Centre, which drew several hundred people, including several WAFL Collectables readers. Having been forced to miss WA’s big victory over South Australia at Lathlain Park to attend the fair on Saturday, it was a pleasant surprise to meet several WAFL collectors on Sunday morning. I’d like to mention Mal, in particular, who brought along a treasure trove of collectables that turned many onlookers green with envy. Those who don’t love West Perth as much as Mal may have to look away now because his collection was full of vintage Cardinals memorabilia. Perhaps the highlight was one of the souvenir Burley red-and-blue footballs that was kicked into the crowd before the 1971 grand final. Mal knew one of the players and ended up being handed one, rather than having to fight for one of those that was booted into the air. It’s in as good a nick as you could hope for and, unlike any other I have seen from the 1960s or 1970s, the bladder was still in perfect working order. I resisted the temptation to drop it on the boot. Mal then pulled out of his bag a 1960s West Perth jersey with Dave Dyson’s number 10 on the back. It had come to him many years ago from a friend, who had been given it by someone who knew Dyson. It was in great condition, featuring long sleeves, thick wool and a number that was made from felt and stitched on to the back of the jumper.

A 1980s West Perth Adidas tracksuit top, with the Belcrest Homes sponsors logo on the back, was also a cracker. Then there was a 1970s West Perth bag. The teeth on the zip had seen better days, but it’s still worth a couple of hundred dollars. There were also some magazine cuttings, posters and playing cards before Mal produced a shirt made for the players in the early 1980s. Bearing the words “West Perth Football Club” on the front, the back featured the phrase “Campbells Comrades”. The player’s number was also printed on the front. Finally, he brought out a wonderful 1960s-style hat. East Perth supporter Steve had come all the way from Rockingham with a rare set of Nabisco posters, produced in 1970. The set of eight posters features one player from each WAFL club – Denis Marshall (C), Fred Lewis (EF), Mal Brown (EP), Pat Astone (P), Hassa Mann (SF), Austin Robertson (S), Bill Walker (SD) and Graham Farmer (WP). Most of Steve’s posters had spent some time up on the wall in his youth, so weren’t in perfect nick. But when they are as difficult to find as these, it doesn’t matter too much. Thank to everyone who made the trip to Morley to say hello and talk about our wonderful competition and its history. In fact, given the number of people who showed up, and the number who emailed to say they were unable to make it this time around, I have decided to do one more fair this year. I invite you to come along next Sunday and have a

look at some of the WAFL collectables I’ll have on show, or bring along something you might like to have valued. The Collector Zone Toy and Hobby Fair will be held next Sunday, June 7, at the Craigie Leisure Centre, Whitfords Avenue, from 9.30am to 2pm. Entry costs $5. Those who missed out on the show also missed the chance to meet former East Perth and North Melbourne champions Barry Cable and Ross Glendinning. Cable, who made his name with Perth before moving to the VFL, looked in great shape and both shared tales of their football careers with the crowd. There were three cards produced for the fair – one featuring Cable, one for Glendinning and one with a caricature of both players. Only 30 copies of each card was produced and if you want to get your hands on one of the few remaining signed cards, you’ll need to visit www.jajascollectables.com The other highlight for this week was my discovery of a rare poster in NSW that was produced for the match between Newcastle and Perth Football Club at the Newcastle Showgrounds back in 1957. The promotional poster was donated to the NSW Football History Society a few years ago by the family of a man who had run football in Newcastle for many years. Very few promotional bills like this one ever seem to survive and it’s great to see it’s in such good nick. I’d love to see some for games played on this side of the Nullarbor, if anyone can oblige? Finally, I’ve had a request from South Fremantle supporter Ken, who has a collection of Southscene and Southerner magazines and would like to hear from anyone who might be able to help him fill the holes in his collection. Get in touch if you can help Ken.

From Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and New Line Cinema comes the comedy Hot Pursuit, starring Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line, Wild) and Sofia Vergara (Chef, TV’s Modern Family), under the direction of Anne Fletcher (The Proposal).

In Hot Pursuit, an uptight and by-the-book cop (Witherspoon) tries to protect the sexy and outgoing widow (Vergara) of a drug boss as they race through Texas, pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen.

Hot Pursuit is in cinemas on June 11.

In Aloha, a celebrated military contractor (Bradley Cooper) returns to the site of his greatest career triumphs – the US Space program in Honolulu, Hawaii – and reconnects with a long-ago love (Rachel McAdams) while unexpectedly falling for the hard-charging Air Force watchdog (Emma Stone) assigned to him. From Academy Award-winner Cameron Crowe, the writer-director behind such films as Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, Aloha also stars Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBride, and Alec Baldwin. Aloha opens on June 4.

EAST PERTH v WEST PERTHHe has the name of a MotoGP champion and Freddie Spencer Clutterbuck has been in the pits for a couple of weeks while waiting to notch a WAFL achievement. The East Perth midfielder will finally play his 100th match for the club after sitting out round nine with injury then enduring the general bye for the State clash. It couldn’t be a better stage. Most Perth derbies aren’t forgotten in a hurry and Clutterbuck will remember this occasion. Royals fans just hope some of his teammates fire up for the occasion in far better fashion than what they did for Craig Wulff’s 250-game achievement earlier in the season. If East Perth doesn’t it could be two matches outside the top five and its season in jeopardy.

The Royals need more forward firepower – they have managed nine goals in their past two matches.

When the teams met last month it was West Perth’s Kody

Manning that inspired a last

quarter charge to victory.

A similar out-come would put

plenty of pressure on all concerned in the

East Perth camp.

EAST FREM v SOUTH FREMIt is often claimed the positions on the premiership ladder mean little in prompting a torrid Fremantle derby. Well, the extra benefit of the latest battle of the arch-rivals is that each has plenty to play for despite exacting revenge on each other for past matches. The Sharks could leap as high as second if they can win while the Bulldogs are still fighting to consolidate a place in the top five. For Jamie McNamara the contest has special significance. The midfielder is scheduled to play his 100th match for the club. South Fremantle will rely in the pace of Tim Kelly, the resolute defence of state backman Blayne Wilson, the opportunities created by Ryan Cook and the ingenuity of forward Cory Dell’Olio to trouble the Sharks at Moss Street.

CLAREMONT v PEELAfter some concerns at the start of the season, Claremont has grown into one of the form teams heading into round 10 with three straight wins. So the Tigers contingent Peel face this Saturday will be stronger in mind and body than the one that lost to the Thunder in round six. Mark Seaby and Beau Maister are now back in the Claremont line-up and they will pose a tall match-up problem for the Thunder. But Peel will have to be just as mindful of midfielders Keifer Yu, Ryan Neates and Tom Ledger. Tigers defender Matthew Davies has also enjoyed a purple patch of form. However, Peel’s Fremantle contingent has developed a strong playing base as the Dockers defer team changes because of their AFL surge. And that means Connor Blakely, Tom Vandeleur and Ethan Hughes still have plenty to show Fremantle’s match committee to push for a higher selection.

SWAN DISTRICTS v PERTHHe might be small in stature but he makes players around him walk a lot taller. Before the State game break Aaron Elari showed his value to Swan Districts. A renowned ball getter who never fears the risk to his frame, Elari had 33 possessions and applied seven tackles, albeit in a losing display against South Fremantle. After a break to refresh Elari will again be a key weapon for the black and whites as they take on his old team Perth. And Swans need the win to stay in touch with their rivals in the top five. Perth has already tried 35 players this season in a bid to find league consistency. Only nine have played all eight matches. The Demons will be relying on those regulars, including Brent Latch, Jared Bell, Jacob Payne and Aidan Tropiano to lift the team in round 10.

Did you KnowThe oldest player in WA’s line-up for the State game against SA last weekend was captain Paul Johnson at 30 years of age (and just three months older than State teammate Darren Rumble). The youngest player was Aaron Black who turned 22 on Christmas Day.

Western Australia now holds a one-win advantage over rivals South Australia after claiming a 45-point victory in the State clash last Saturday. Going into the battle for the Haydn Bunton Cup, the States had each won 46 times in their encounters since 1904, but under the guidance of debutant State coach Darren Harris, WA broke the deadlock with a 18.13 (121) to 11.10 (76) victory. It was the WAFL’s third State scalp in a row, backing up wins over the VFL in 2013 and the NEAFL last year. It was also their second win in three clashes with the SANFL, having won at Medibank Stadium in 2009 before going down at Gliderol Stadium in Glenelg in 2012. These two wins by WA have been South Australia’s only two State defeats since 2002. The WA team was selected to take advantage of the wide open spaces of Lathlain Park and they did just that, with half forward Ryan Davis’ five goals earning him the Simpson Medal as WA’s best player.

Shane Yarran and Cory Dell’Olio each kicked three goals and 11 of WA’s finest collected 20 or more disposals, with captain Paul Johnson finishing with 19 hitouts and Wayde Twomey taking 12 marks to go with his

game-high 31 disposals. South Australian

defender Tom Keough was named the winner

of the Fos Williams Medal as his team’s best.

On the field, participation and a willingness to have a go are the key ingredients to sporting success. Off the field, that same sentiment is the driving force behind McDonald’s ‘Macca’s Junior Sports Grants’ program. Created to provide sports clubs with new equipment or funding to increase participation in a chosen sport, the grants aim to encourage healthy, active lifestyles among young Western Australians. The Coolbinia Bombers Junior Football Club, a lucky recipient of the 2015 round one grants initiative, will put the much-needed funding towards its unique Star Kick program. Star Kick is the first of its kind in Australia, allowing children with special needs to

participate in AFL Auskick. The support from Macca’s Junior Sports Grants will enable the club to buy state-of-the-art footballs with built-in beepers to assist vision impaired players to find and track the ball. Coolbinia Bombers Junior Football Club President Tom Parker said the club had a variety of needs to cater for and worked hard to increase the number of children participating in the sport. However, he said a shortage of resources made it difficult to meet their goal. “The specialised equipment we’ll now have access to teaches children with special needs the concept of direction and helps improve their skills on the field,” said Mr Parker. “It’s pertinent everybody gets the chance to play this much-loved and iconic Australian sport and with this new equipment, our Star Kick team will be able to play like any other football team.” The Macca’s Junior Sports Grants initiative has provided more than $400,000 worth of grants and helped over 350 junior sporting groups and school teams. McDonald’s WA licensee president Richard Hill said as the largest employer of young people in Australia, McDonald’s has a strong track record of supporting young athletes in the local community. “As many of us are parents, sport coaches and managers ourselves, we are committed to growing grassroots sport so all children have the opportunity to participate in junior sport,” said Mr Hill. McDonald’s WA has also partnered with the Western Australian Football League to increase football participation and encourage more families to follow the sport.

Applications for the next round of Macca’s Junior Sports Grants close 30 June 2015. For more information visit www.mcdonalds.com.au/juniorsportsgrants.

FOUR junior umpires spent a day in the life of an AFL Umpire at Domain Stadium recently as part of the 2015 Community Umpiring Round. Morgan Ramsden and Basil Thomas from the Demon’s District and Denzel More and Sean Henry from the Swan’s District joined the AFL Umpires team for the West Coast and Gold Coast game on May 16, where they had the chance to spend time in the rooms and see the preparations of the umpires. They also received the opportunity to try on the umpires’ microphone vest, walk onto the ground with their parents and then lead the umpiring team onto the field where they shook hands with West Coast coach Adam

Simpson and stood behind Federal Minister Julie Bishop for the coin toss. More, from the Swan Districts Junior Football Umpire Association, said it was an amazing opportunity and an experience he would never forget. “I am very honoured and privileged to have been selected for this opportunity by Andrew Hayes and Peter Gurney,” he said. “It was a fantastic insight to watch the preparation involved and be out on the oval an hour prior to the game. Then to have the opportunity to be inside the AFL umpire change rooms, to chat and watch the umpires prepare and also to see the match-day vest was all really interesting. “I really appreciate all the umpires making time to allow me to share this rare insight, it was amazing. “It was a magic feeling walking out. I was thinking wow, I am leading the AFL umpires out on the field – this is a really awesome moment, and one I will never forget!

“I would like to send a huge thank you everyone involved with the AFL umpiring family for allowing me to be part of this once in a lifetime opportunity.” The experience was part of a nation-wide initiative for Community Umpiring Round, which aims to

promote the importance of community umpires in the development of the game. Anyone interested in umpiring can register their interest at www.getinthegame.com.au or contact West Australian Football Commission Umpire Development Manager Dean Margetts on (08)9381 5599.

State 18s start with thrilling win By Chris Pike

WESTERN Australia opened the 2015 NAB AFL under-18 Championships in style with a thrilling one-point victory over South Australia at Lathlain Park last Saturday. WA kicked the opening three goals and while South Australia only pulled ahead briefly by a point in the last quarter, the Black Swans held sway for much of the contest claimed a thrilling 11.7 (73) to 9.18 (72) victory. There were a host of impressive performances from WA, with Marshall Jones the star up forward kicking four goals from 10 possessions and five marks. Levi Ridley kicked two goals from 12 disposals with Jake Waterman also kicking two from 11 touches and 10 marks. Tom Bennett was prolific through the middle for WA finishing with 21 possessions to go with a couple of clearances and inside-50 entries, and a goal. Brayden Hackett was another to impress with 19 possessions, six marks and four rebounds from the defensive 50 while Sam Petrevski-Seton was terrific with 18 disposals, six tackles and three clearances.

WA’s Ridley, Bennett and Jones all kicked truly for the Black Swans in the first 20 minutes. South Australia got a goal back just before quarter-time thanks to Mark Quinn, but WA got off to a fast start in the second quarter opening up a handy lead once again. South Australia had its chances throughout the second quarter but only managed to kick 2.7 with WA still leading by six points at three quarter-time. A goal inside the first two minutes of the last quarter for South Australia from Partington saw scores level and the Croweaters did move ahead by a point, but Jones’ fourth goal and then another from Powell-Pepper was enough to see WA hold on and win by a point.WA will next play Vic Country on Sunday, May 31 at Medibank Stadium.

Can You Help?Since the beginning of the 1970 WAFL season there have been 4162 league debutants at an average of 93 new players per season. The WAFL player database is missing a date of birth for only 23 of these players but the birth place and junior/previousclub is not recorded for a further 240 players. Each week the Budget will list the playing records of eight players for whom information is sought. These include:William John BERRy (East Fremantle 1978, 15 games) Gavin Paul CHESSER (East Perth 1998, 2 games) Adam Ellis CLARK (East Perth 1989, 5 games) Stephen Robert HAMPEL (Claremont 1986, 1 game) Colin Trevor HOWE (Swan Districts 1974, 1 game) Trevor Alan MADISON (East Perth 1980, 1 game) Graham John McGREADy (South Fremantle 1970, 1 game) Bruce John TEAGUE (Claremont 1970-71, 11 games)

Any information that could help establish contact with, or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson ([email protected]) or Judy Chalmers (9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission.
