Every word of the above mentioned quote articulates the philosophy of G D Goenka Public School, Sarita Vihar and a reflects in in every facet of the historic academic first term of the academic session 2020-21. I use the word historic because never ever before, did we all find ourselves in a situation like this. Our outlook today, has taken a 360 degree turn. Never did anyone imagine that our children would be attending classes and studying yet not attend school in the literal sense. Today, almost after six months and a successful completion of a term we can proclaim victory and say “We did it!” We did it because we always knew that come what may our children deserve the best, we knew that we had to ensure that their development isn’t hampered, we knew that our children are our priority.

Today, as we stand tall with a sense of achievement, I want to extend gratitude to all the dear parents for supporting us in thick and thin of the online teaching learning process. Your unwavering support and faith reposited in us, speak volumes about the affable environment provided to our young learners. With the successful completion of Term-1, it is now the time to celebrate the successes of the past and plan for the future. The great faculty of teachers who thrive on change, meeting diversity and aiming continuously towards progress, are now going to accelerate learning, targeting to reach academic brilliance. The drive, passion and determination fortified by skill, knowledge and empathy, has seen the teaching and learning continue to raise the bar despite the ever changing social and emotional needs that we are confronted with. Now when I look back and see the accomplishments of the ambassadors of our school, our Goenkan students, it swells my heart with pride to see the way in which each one of them have adapted to synchronous and asynchronous learning. Change is the reality, albeit difficult to accept but impossible to escape and every Goenkan possesses the unique quality of adapting to every change. We did it by following our instincts to survive and thrive and turning every setback into a comeback. Ever since the inception of the school and especially during the last six months we have celebrated innumerable achievements and accolades. Needless to say, they all were the fruits of the Ubuntu factor, meaning I am, because you are. G D Goenka Public School Sarita Vihar has been able to deliver the best because of you dear parents. The school is, because you are. You all have given us so much these past six months, your trust, motivation, love and most importantly your efforts to collaborate. We, that is you and us, worked on the strategy of collaboration and here we are today... emerging victorious by overcoming all difficult and unusual times Let us all continue with the Ubuntu mantra, overcome every roadblock and give the best to our children.

of success is best climbed by stepping on the rungs of opportunity, in which our collegium of parents and teachers have played an intrinsic role. It is important to keep on learning and continue to hone individual talents. This newsletter will take you on the voyage of the past two months that our students have undertaken in their quest of self-evolution. Clasping the 3 Way-Hand-Shake tighter between the Parent, Student and the Teacher, let us work together to teach our children skills and attitude that will contribute to their personal development and also develop steadfastness in their character to face the challenges in their growing years. “With warm wishes and God’s blessings”

Standing true to its motto HIGHER, STRONGER, BRIGHTER G. D. Goenka Public School, Sari-ta Vihar has once again made it to the top in the ‘Challengers Category’ amongst the South East Delhi Schools, according to ‘The Times School Survey 2020’ conducted by The Times of India.

The objective of this research is to arrive at a list of top schools in each zone in Delhi NCR. The category of respondents who were intervened rated each of the schools based on their experience with the current school and their perception with respect to other schools. The ranking process in the current year, imbibed a holistic research module involving an ob-jective study and a perceptual study. While the objective study is done to capture a true reflection of what exists, the perceptual study on the other hand is deemed important to comprehend how the stakeholders perceive the schools. Thus, these two modules in tan-dem help to make the ranking process more robust.

Whatever we have accomplished, belongs to our entire Goenkan fraternity and is a tribute to our combined and dedicated efforts. We congratulate all our stakeholders and look for-ward to their continued support in our future endeavours.

All the kids were ready with their dinosaur shaped sandwiches and fresh fruit juices which they had packed in their bags before boarding the bus to the harbour to take the cruise. The Artist Club

‘Art has the power to transform, to illuminate, to educate, inspire and motivate’.

Art is an essential part of our existence. Infact, Mother Nature, with its innumerable colours and wonderful creations is a prime example of this beautiful form of expression. Art holds a lot of importance in the early years of a child. While scientifically it is said that art develops the right side of the brain, it cultivates important skills like problem-solving, self-expression, creativity, and fine motor skills too. Art also brings a lot of happiness and pleasure to the person who is actually working on it but also to the viewers who view and enjoy the creations. Due to the present restrictions, while the children are not able to interact with their peer group physically, therefore, it becomes imperative to try to help them in de-stressing and being constructive. G.D. Goenka Public School, SaritaVihar, organized a happiness session on Art exclusively for the students named The Artists Club. The aim behind “The Artists Club” on the Folk Art of India was to inculcate an interest for the culture and traditions which make their country unique and to enhance the creativity of the budding artists of the Primary Wing. The session was conducted by the Art teachers of the school, Ms. Sanchita Das and Ms. Shimona Vig who patiently demonstrated and guided the students step by step to create their own masterpieces. The young artists were also apprised of the nuances and distinctive styles through a presentation. During the workshop students of Nursery and KG were introduced to the Warli Folk Art. Children learnt about special characteristics of representing the humble life of Warli Tribe in Maharashtra. They were told that geometric shapes like triangle, circle, square, dots and crooked lines are used to depict humans. These shapes are symbolic of different elements of nature. The students made beautiful book marks with the art form. The Goenkans of classes I & II learnt about the Madhubani form of art. which is the Madhubani art or Mithila paintings traditionally from Bihar. Double outlining and borders are the main features of these paintings. The children of Grade I and II made impressive Madhubani paintings.

Goenkan Literrazi-The Celebration of Language and Literature

With this belief, we at G.D Goenka Public School, Sarita Vihar gave varied opportunities to our Goenkans and to almost 260 students from 45 different schools across the country who participated in our inhouse annual Literature festival, “Goenkan Literazzi”, held on August 22, 2020. We believe that if children are approached with the desire of putting in the best and not worrying about winning or losing, it not only enables them to develop their imagination, ingenuity and skill sets, but also motivates them to increase their knowledge and enhance their learning. In keeping with present time where technology has taken a foothold over the age old tradition of learning, G.D Goenka witnessed its first online Inter School Competition, “Goenkan Literazzi”, based on Language Skills, Visual and Performing Arts. The competition encompassed all realms of

literature—oratory, drama, story and creative writing. Putting the Year in Perspective

Life today has become so complex that examinations have come to play a vital role in one’s educational career. Good assessment programs aim to provide a balanced and fair evaluation of each student. They achieve this by using a variety of strategies and tasks. This gives students multiple opportunities, in varying contexts, to demonstrate what they know and can do. It also enables teachers to be confident and accurate in their judgement of each student. A subject has a number of goals (knowledge to learn, skills to acquire) and each evaluation is appropriate to the specific goal or goals it is assessing. The process of searching through one’s memory and retrieving the relevant information strengthens that memory pathway for the future rather than passive reading and remembering by rote learning, the students study by forming/framing appropriate questions, searching memory for relevant responses, and knitting this information together into an appropriate answer.

At G.D. Goenka, the assessments are not done to label the children as per the marks they score but to encourage them to grow and blossom further in life. It is a fact that life is all about exploring the unexplored and the ongoing crisis has reinforced just the same. It has taught us to adapt to the new normal and explore new avenues. Holding online classes was a prime example of the same. The school has been extending all possible help and teachers have been researching and brainstorming to develop new ideas for making the online teaching and learning process more fruitful. To take the learning process a notch higher, the school conducted a ‘Unit Test’ in July and ‘Half Yearly Examination’ in September. Cycle Tests were conducted for grades X and XII in the month of August to ensure sufficient practice for board exams. The examinations

conducted by the school ensured strict adherence to the latest guidelines provided by CBSE for the session 2020-21. With the completion of the examination cycles we not only achieved our motto of ensuring the holistic development of every Goenkan but also witnessed the glimpse of the strong values or if we may say so our ‘Sanskaras’ imbibed in our children, where in every child

ensured that he/she takes responsibility of writing

the exams with utmost care, honesty and

sincerity. As mentors

and facilitators, we leave no stone unturned in inculcating good values in our children which is also quite evident through the following shloka-

When it comes to putting their best foot forward, our young Goenkans never cease to be the best. They proved it once more when The Pan India mega event ‘School Super League’ in association with Byju’s-The Learning App, was held online in keeping up with the current trend. This activity geared students to broaden their horizon of critical thinking and deepen their understanding of subjects. Our young champs enthusiastically participated in the event and bagged scholarships and certificates.

‘To the World you may be just a TEACHER, but to your students you are a HERO’

‘We learn together, therefore we grow together’

Page 28 Page 29

Though these heroes might not be bestowed upon with any gallantry awards, yet their efforts and dedication call for raising a toast. Teacher’s Day has been earmarked to honour the great warriors who have been moulding the future of our present generations Educator is a name reserved for those who teach so that other minds can grow; they reflect a sense of dedication to the pursuit of knowledge and share what they know. Young Goenkans saluted the spirit of selfless service of their educators by organising a special cultural programme to mark the special day on September 5, 2020. The scintillating performances were endowed with grace and poise as the young learners went on to celebrate the special day for their special school family. The celebrations began with invoking the Almighty with a dance performance. The beautiful depiction also personified the role of guru as an omnipotent power. The ceremonial inception seamlessly blended into a beautiful video had the students expressing their profound gratitude and affection for their teachers. A live performance depicting the digital classrooms with its highs and lows, tickled the funny bones of one and all. As the programme was brought to a close, the first graduating batch of the school extended their gratitude to all those who have shaped

their future. The beautiful conclave of warm emotions and feelings was brought to a close with a digitally attractive memoir, dedicated to honor the teacher warriors.

Pause the Moment - Special Assemblies

The purpose of school assemblies is to enlighten the children about their cultural heritage, strengthen their values and raise their ability to learn together. The virtual medium of learning has not stopped the Goenkans from conducting informative assemblies and uplifting their knowledge about a variety of topics. Many special assemblies were conducted during the month of August and September. From national festivals like the Independence Day to the celebration of our diversities, through a special assembly on Embracing Diversity each assembly aimed at mass growth and learning.

The Hindi Diwas assembly was conducted to honour our National Language and appreciate its rich literary heritage. The Investiture Ceremony, where the Student Council members took their oaths to fulfil their responsibilities with honour and grace throughout this session, imbibed the feeling of leadership and allowed each student to exercise their right to vote and select worthy leaders.

Culminating the academic learning and weaving it beautifully with festivals, values and virtues is the intention behind conducting these special assemblies.

‘We learn together, therefore we grow together’

The months of August and September have brought a lot of flavours in our lives. The Goenkans are determined and passionate as never before. We feel delighted in meeting virtually and the vivid webinars have thus, unfolded in the true sense, to shape us and change our approach constantly. To begin with, the first in the series for the month was conducted by Trinity College London on the topic ‘Drama as a Tool For Online Teaching’.The participants took the opportunity to prepare for a multi-layered drama lesson plan and use online teaching tools.. The session aimed at capitalizing on the latest research and scientific developments in the field of education through drama from around the world. The Ministry of Education organized a two-day Conclave on the theme of School Education in the 21st Century on September 10-11, 2020. 1t was more of a practitioner’s Conclave, while day 2 observed technical sessions. A team of teachers identified from Middle/Senior and Primary wing at G D Goenka Public School, Sarita Vihar, attended the wide range of almost 6 sessions spread across two days. The themes were based around the new National Education Policy and the stalwarts of the education industry were the eminent speakers. The highlights of the sessions were an insight on Art & Toy Pedagogy, a presentation on NEP, 2020. Another significant webinar in the series was the one on the ‘ Importance of Physical Fitness in a Student’s Life’.The event conducted by CBSE saw Dr. Biswajit Saha, Director, Vocational Education and Skill Training(CBSE) as the host. The webinar reiterated on the vision shared by the dignitaries on the need for skilled personnel in sports and also the channelization of youth energy in constructive activities as well as the health of our future generation. CBSE conducted another ‘Online Teacher Training Course on Competency-based-Education through Diksha App’.

The course that was interactive and divided into four modules, aimed to deepen educators’ understanding of the best prevailing practices in terms of teaching-learning, assessment design and processes underlying CBE model. The teachers were immensely enlightened by availing the unique opportunity to learn from the best in the field. Nothing can really restrain the spirit of the determined educators. No matter what the challenge is, they do find ways of bringing joy and happiness around. They are out to make a difference in whichever way they can, to help dreams of their little ones come true. To commemorate the occasion of Teachers’ Day, the ‘Ministry of Education’ organised ‘Shikshak Parv’ from the 8th September to 25th of September 2020.The event saw twelve webinars on the effective implementation of NEP and a ‘quiz for educators and teachers’ competition for preparing communication material. Last but not the least in the list, is the webinar on Knowledge and Awareness Mapping Platform ‘KAMP’. The event was an International intellect E-based assessment platform to evaluate cognizance of 21st century skills, awareness and knowledge of Science, Technology and Humanities among students. The major takeaways for the educators from the webinar are to help students identify their awareness and aptitude for science, create awareness about the emerging technologies like Robotics, IOT, AI etc. & infuse a healthy competitive spirit among students through rewards. Six months into the year of virtual seminars a.k.a webinars, and if we were to look back,we can see how we have progressed. From a month wherein all the educators learnt to log on to Zoom & Meet to a month where there is a surfeit of informative webinars. Be it sports,teaching-learning or NEP 2020, the speakers of these webinars had the educators spellbound with so much valuable information and awareness in the bargain.
