The Covid-19 experience – started in Vasai from March 2020 – has turned into an encounter and, it still continues for last one year. All of us look forward to our ‘Normal Life’ which is connected with usual getting up, routine study or work, coupled with fun, frolic (Masti), no tension, seeking attention through fashions, fads and fans. It was a self-centred life, with career-oriented perspective, having future-geared outlook, with casual dispositions, taking many things, living beings and even human beings for granted.

Many believe that the Corona Virus Pandemic has paralysed the Normal Life. But on the contrary, it has enabled the thinking people to analyse the situation of our universe, condition of our world and have even started questioning our life, life scenario, the reasons which caused the Pandemic, the way our response has been and how we can deal with the ‘Future Waves’, should they arise. A few people who think loudly and reflect deeply have also started making proposals as to how our Planet needs to be 100 years from now.

As the Students, Staff and the Principal as well as the Management, the historic and stupendous task during and after Covid-19 may be as follows:

1. Four major SOPs as pro-active tools: It’s good to understand the deeper meaning of the Face Mask, Thermal Screening, Sanitisation, Physical Distancing, i.e., Mask for filtering my words, Thermal Screening for taking care of personal hygiene, Sanitisation for societal healthcare and, Physical Distancing to cherish healthy relationship with one and all.

2. Education to supersede formal structures: Now the schooling could be beyond school, learning and teaching is possible beyond classrooms and, sports beyond sports complexes. Learning, teaching, self-teaching is possible. Education doesn’t mean thrusting information down the students’ throats, it becomes life-oriented, coping skills.

3. ABCD of True Education: Authenticity, Behaviour, Commitment and Dispositions for nurturing Culture in a holistic manner through Communication, Coherence, Consistency and Creativity. Mere Media is not enough but the matter sent through Messenger needs to become ‘Message’ of inclusiveness, not of division.

Manager’s Motivation for ‘New Normal’

4. Cementing boundaries with bridges: True Education builds bridges, breaks barriers of caste, creed, colour, gender, region, religion and of languages. It expands horizon and then sky becomes a limit. Educated, Cultured, Wise person believes in and becomes advocate of ‘Glocal’ [Global and Local] Culture. Compassion, Empathy, Vision are its trademarks.

5. Know your real friend: Recognising friend from mere well-wishers requires profound ‘Discernment’, i.e., to identify, to separate, to choose and to live with virtues and values is a life-long-process of maturity. When (not ‘If’) a person accepts God as the Highest Reality then power-pomp-position becomes secondary and, becomes attached to detachment.

6. Treating crisis as an opportunity: Human life is short and world is uncertain. Unexpected and unwarranted events take place. It’s at crisis / crucial times a person gets an opportunity to prove potential, by exploring various and different possibilities through unforeseen ideas, insights, inspiration, innovation, invention and also through interactions.

7. Thinking ‘Out of Box’: Our life was revolving around Food/Diet, Study/ Education, Job/Business, Sleep/Rest, Recreation/Outing, Health/ Exercise, God/Religion. The Lockdowns did put brakes to fast-track, ‘I’/’Me’/ ‘Mine’-centred life. It has challenged / changed us, made us aware about / offered the Real Meaning of Life, Relationship with one another and with the Almighty, All-Wise and All-encompassing God.

Thus, the ‘New Normal’ invites us to re-view, to revise our Value-System, our Priorities, our Fundamental Option. We’ll have to invest in education, in poor, in Research and Development of Persons, not in weapons/arms and ammunitions but in nutrition, medicine, healthcare, vaccines, etc.

In short, sharing, caring, daring to think of the poor persons, hapless families, our own country and also helpless countries. Co-operation will be the hallmark, from now on, not rivalry. Then integrity of persons and accountability in the public offices become the product of Good Governance.

Above all, the Church is committed to the Cause of Education, as envisaged by the Teaching of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965): Our Archbishop His Grace Dr. Felix Machado stands for the word to become work. Our Principal (Dr Somnath Vibhute), Campus Priest (Fr [Dr] Solomon Rodrigues), Administrator (Fr Rajesh Lopez), OSD (Mr Richard Vaz) and the Staff do ensure that we realize the Vision and Mission of our College in season and out of season.

And, let’s prepare ourselves to realize the proposed ‘New Education Policy’ – as proposed by the Govt of India – in and through our St Gonsalo Garcia College, gradually.

Fr (Dr) Joel D’Cunha

Dear readers, !

It gives me an immense pleasure to present GARCIAITES - 2020 in your hands. Days, Months and years come and fly relentlessly indicating neither the beginning nor the end for the time as aptly said by Albert Einstein, `TIME IS ONE’ or by Lord Krishna as AZmXr AZ§V However, the year 2019 - 2020 marked its footprints significantly in the life and times of St. Gonsalo Garcia College.

The new year started with academic programs in June 2019. In total 3732 new students were admitted to the first-year programs in this year. Apart from routine lecturing our teachers have sincerely endeavored the use of information and communication technology, ICT for effective engagement of the students in academics. I am pleased to share that professors now use Edmodo, Google classrooms and zoom.us while delivering lectures. This has helped greatly during the nationwide shutdown due to Covid-19 pandemic.

“Change is the only constant in this universe”, understanding this proverb in the context of the paradigm shift in offing for higher education as new education policy draft was circulated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). College management took keen interest and organised a one day seminar on this subject. It was attended by large number of teachers to know the upcoming changes and challenges in the field of education. In order to make ICT available in every classroom, 6 new LCD projectors are installed and new 50 units of desktops are installed in the computer lab for upgrading infrastructure for information technology with high speed internet connectivity.

For the students with less than satisfied performance, remedial coaching was provided in the subjects of business economics and mathematics and Statistics. Upgrading is essential for success in any field, so is true with higher education. Many of our professors are passionately engaged in active research - leading to the degrees of PhD, Mrs. Teresa Pereira, Mr. Tushar Raut and Mr. Gatting Koli earned the coveted degree of Ph.D. in areas of History and Commerce respectively. Many others have been constantly upgrading themselves through various orientation programmes, refresher programs, soft skills training courses, etc. attended a number of workshops, seminars

Principal’s Desk

conferences, and symposia et al. Some of them have successfully completed Swayam’s courses and refresher programs as well.

The college’s Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) is putting its hard work with an aim of having better planned and executed academic and co-curricular programs. Using academic diaries, monthly teaching plans, concrete feedback from staff, students and stakeholders has been an effort in the right direction. While preparing for the third cycle of assessment and accreditation of the college, timely academic Audit and annual Quality Assurance Report AQARs was an achievement along with the successful organization of a national workshop in association with the Knowledge Resource Centre (KRC) i.e. college library.

Knowledge Resource Centre (KRC) had witnessed many fruitful events this year. It was shifted in a new, bigger and better space with the aim of upgrading facilities for learners. The KRC in association with the IQAC, conducted two days’ national workshop for teachers on the subject of the development of E-content for effective teaching and learning. KRC further organised many events such as book exhibitions, library day celebration and other competitions for students and readers. And the feather in the crown is that our college is now recognized as NPTEL local chapter for Swayam. Two teachers are registered as mentors of students.

Assessing the success of Higher Education Institutions (HEI) is admittedly a subjective enterprise, yet when we consciously focus on multiple programs we had for students, one will agree, surely that we aim at holistic development of students. Institutions and parents need to instill in the young and growing minds the character of honesty, courage, discipline and hard work to form a positive personality. Many of our student cadets and volunteers have attended various camps under NCC, NSS and DLLE to learn several life skills and soft skills beyond the formal walls of a classroom. We implemented various programmes suggested by the University Grants Commission (UGC). It includes International yoga day, Fit India movement, Shiksha pe Charcha 2.0, Tree plantations, blood donation, voters’ registration and awareness to be effectively connected with the society and NGOs.

We value and always encourage students taking part in various sports and games at district, state and national levels. College, this year successfully organized Inter-Collegiate Kabaddi competition “Garcian Spirit 2020”. We believe in providing the best possible sports infrastructure for our students. This year we inaugurated hundredmeter-long shooting range in a college. Bodybuilding competition and swimming competition was also introduced in the year. We feel proud to mention that one of the boxers Ms. Akanksha Ahire won bronze medal at khelo India national games held at Bhuvaneshwar, Odisha

In order to nurture the management lessons and develop entrepreneurial skills, college self financed section organized POSDCORB, in collaboration with National Institute of Securities Market (NISM), Navi Mumbai. 700 + students took part in this and the gathering was addressed by Mr. Ishwar Jha, a leading start up entrepreneur. And the registrar of the NISM, Mr. Sunil Kadam.

On the 23rd March 2020 Lockdown was announced

due to the Pandemic caused by Covid-19. The fear spread faster

than the virus and the ruptures in the human relationships started

revealing themselves. The ways in which we exist with others

in an otherwise accepted daily routine came under scrutiny.

The importance of touch and being physically present emerged as crucial issues to be thought

about. Educational institutions and university syllabuses expect the young students to think about

such unprecedented situations. In our college the teachers and management have been trying

to prepare for and address the unprecedented situations. His Grace Archbishop Rev. Fr. Dr. Felix

Machado made sure to attend the discussion on New Education Policy and addressed all the

present stakeholders to contribute to the novel ways of education. St. Gonsalo Garcia College

even before the pandemic had already started with the training sessions of online teaching

platforms for the faculty. G Suite (google classroom) is the online platform that the faculty started

using and provided the students with free G Suite account for the online teaching learning

activities. The well-established library with the online journals and books made available to the

students proved to be the right course of action as it helped the students in their studies post lock

down. Our college was already in the process of and using tools and methodologies that are

being talked about in Digital Humanities. With the focus intact on value education and introducing

new teaching methodologies St. Gonsalo Garcia College fulfils its aim of contributing to the

development of the society. We as the editorial team are happy to present this year’s edition of

magazine reflecting the gone year’s achievements.

Why can’t we just admit? Phobias or Fear is a normal and an important human reaction to something dangerous, it keeps one out of danger, because fear is disliked and one tries one's best to avoid the object or situation of fear. It causes physical changes known as fi ght-or-fl ight reaction, which causes blood pressure to increase and the heart rate to speed up to pump blood to the large muscles used to run away. To balance this the human body has sweat glands which produce perspiration to cool the body. Usually young people experience more fear than adults do (Metcalf). When one has a fear of something, one normally does not spend much time thinking about it, and it only affects one when one is forced to confront it. Just about everyone is afraid of something According to me everyone has at least one phobia in common. Some of the common phobias are acrophobia, aerophobia, claustrophobia and hydrophobia. These are few

phobias which are found in 90% people out of 100%. I’ve got two types of phobia and you guys won’t believe because I’ve started developing other types of phobias as well. I’ve got Nyctophobia; I’m scared to death of darkness. It’s increasing day by day, it’s not that I’m weak or anything I’m just scared. According to me I’m not responsible for this phobia; my parents are because they used to scare me “if you won’t eat your food the boogeyman will take you.” And also “don’t go in the darkness there is someone sitting and will hit you if you don’t behave.” Nyctophobia is common in children but rare in adults. The second type of phobia I suffer with is Traumatophobia. There are no complains about this phobia because it’s a self developed phobia and also it’s benefi cial. Traumatophobia means the fear of getting injured. This phobia is associated with (BII) Blood-Injury-Injection; I’m super scared of these three things. I guess everyone is aware about the government and private doses and injections we are supposed to take at specifi c ages, I was 18, two years back and was begging the nurse because I wanted my mom beside me while piercing the syringe into my epidermis. Also I guess I’ll be the only person to get scared to ride a bike during the rainy season, I love rain but I prefer the windows than bikes. This is just a friendly advice for all the new parents out there, please do not scare your kid on stuffs like a darkness, height, water, stuffed animals, etc. because you never know these tiny things can have a major impact on their little brains and may turn into a mess as time passes in their later life. My best friend and I suffer from Nyctophobia; we have each other to share things. Open up yourself to the world you may get someone who could trust you forever.

Sitting on the rooftop, I stared at the night sky.Smiled as I thought about you; I love it when I am around you.I never regretted letting my walls down for you,Being childish and idiotic:Being carefree,Knowing that you will be there for me.I was never good at expressing myself,But you understood me somehow,You read me like an open book,And I still wonder how!I love the feeling of your arms around me,The way you hold me protectively. When you place your hands in mine,I look at the way our fi ngers entwine.I stare at your picture and think,I could look at you forever;I think I wished for you all my life,And I will love you for ever and ever.I might not be bold enough,To say it out loud,But I will always hold,Onto the words untold.
