Thanks to the team effort from the Estate Offi ce, another splendid event was enjoyed at our annual Easter Egg Hunt and Market. Our sincere thanks to

Pam Golding Properties for sponsoring this event that has become a highlight for our children over the years. Thanks also to the little ones who came to the day to ensure the Easter bunny was kept on his toes!

First on the table of events planned for the coming month is our annual Family Fun Run that will take place on Freedom Day, 27 April 2015. Please diarise this date as this promises to be a fun day for our active residents. The Fourways Gardens Running Club will stand in as marshals on the day and our sponsor is Sotheby’s Realty. The clubhouse will also offer a traditional braai and I suggest you book with the clubhouse well in advance to book your table. As to the second event, we are happy to inform you that Mother’s Day, on 10 May 2015, will also be celebrated with a delicious lunch at the clubhouse this year.

With winter creeping closer, we have to realistically start planning accordingly as load shedding remains a reality in our lives. Please check your gas supplies and equipment ahead of winter and if you are planning to install a generator, please take note of the estate and municipal guidelines that are in place. These are available on our website www.fwg.co.za under the secure portal My HOA/Documents/Guidelines. This is also a good time to plan maintenance around your property, especially painting. With the turn of the season, leaf shedding should be taken into account and gutters should be cleaned to prevent possible future damage to your home due to blockages.

Estate News

Fourways Gardens • 5 • April 2015

Following my previous article and remarks regarding crime and safety in the Estate, I am glad to report that we experienced no further incidents of petty theft in the Estate. Please take note that on an average day we have 13,000 entries at our gates. The sheer volume of feet through this Estate poses a risk in itself. It is up to each and every individual to take the necessary precautions in their personal safety and security. Our security offi cers are on duty 24 hours a day and are only a phone call away. If you think you notice suspicious behaviour or feel threatened in any way, please call them! The number you can call is (011) 465 5466 or (011) 467 2005 or (011) 465 2302 or (011) 467 1400. All these numbers go to the control room, where the offi cer on duty can deploy the closest security offi cer to your home. Please save these numbers on your mobile phone and make sure your household are also aware of them. Your safety and security is our priority!

I wish to revisit the status of our database and the assistance we require from residents to ensure that only active users are still listed under your stand. Please inform Margaret in the Estate offi ce on [email protected] of any changes. It is imperative to ensure that your domestic staff are registered on the biometrics system as we keep a record of identifi cation at the offi ce. By not adhering to this request your action could lead to jeopardising the security of the entire Estate.

You may have also noticed the increase in construction around Fourways Gardens Residential Estate. This automatically leads to a higher security risk as there is increased traffi c around our perimeter walls. Please lock car doors when leaving the Estate and make sure that you only grant access to the Estate to people you are expecting. Many criminals make use of soft targets in these circumstances.

Our K56 trailer park has been renovated and more bays have been added to create a facility where residents can store trailers, boats or caravans. We allocate no more than one bay per property to ensure we can assist most

residents who do not have suffi cient storage space at home. Please make use of this facility and if you are already using the area, please ensure that your personal details are up to date with security. We have a security offi cer situated at the gate 24 hours a day to assist our residents to use this facility. I encourage you to invest in a cover for your trailer, boat or caravan as the sun is scorching in this area in the absence of any large trees. We also welcome any donations of large indigenous shade trees for this area. Please contact me should you wish to make such a donation, on [email protected].

In preparation for the upcoming AGM (date to be communicated) I urge qualifi ed, committed members of Fourways Gardens Residential Estate to consider joining the Board of Directors for the Estate. I understand that the commitment is time consuming and an unthankful task, but we cannot take the Estate to the next level without committed directors. Our current board has given many years’ service and some of them have indicated their intention to step down this year. The portfolios are for a Chairman (without portfolio), Security, Finance, Environmental, Architectural, Social & Recreational and Communications. Therefore the ideal number of directors is seven. Please contact me directly should you require more information to make an informed decision about this matter.

I wish to thank the residents that have offered their expertise with the fi bre project and within the various committees on the Estate. This highlighted the wealth of knowledge we have here and I invite residents to become involved as leaders in your Estate for the good of the community.

In closing I wish to leave you with a quote from Peter F Drucker: “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.”

Enjoy autumn!Kind regards,

Johan

MARKET BUMPOur 2015 Buyer rush hit a huge bump during February. From a buoyant, strong buying trend, it has swung around into a low con dence trend. Prices had moved up slightly in Dainfern during the latter half of last year and January this year. Fourways Gardens prices follow several months behind Dainfern. Since the President’s speech, the budget and the sudden drop in the currency, we have had an in ux of new properties onto the market. The buyer activity is de nitely there and agents are running, but the next bump is now being felt. The Sellers think it is a Sellers market and the Buyers are under the impression that it is a Buyers market. The reality is that it is very di cult to get the parties to agree on any nancial compromise. Due to low con dence, property is trending towards a Buyers market. There is another important factor that drives property prices in these areas, and that is the Corporate rental market. Changes in legislation are making it di cult for our expats to renew their visas and work permits. However, the Investor buyers are very bullish and they are out there looking for opportunities. So, where do you as a Homeowner, t into the current picture?

If you are selling in this market, you need to ensure that your property is priced favourably to compete with similar homes on the market. A realistic approach is very important and, if you cannot delay your sale, you need to remain competitive in this environment. Allow a little bu er for negotiation but, not far out of the selling price that you have been given by your agent. A lot of time can pass and, as we have seen, the market can change again overnight!

Vetting Domestic Workers Recent events in the Estate have required me to write on a subject that has been raised many times in the past. It appears though that the message hasn’t fi ltered through to all of the residents at FWG. So this month I will focus on the vetting of domestic workers.

Who we allow into our homes is a great concern to all of us. It is after

all our refuge and our place of solace away from the world. However many home owners don’t know the very people who can potentially harm them the most – their nannies, gardeners and domestic workers. They invite these employees into their houses without conducting due diligence or background checks on them and often become victims.

The amount of times I have heard a home owner say, “How could they steal from me; he/she seemed so nice,” is simply tragic. Too late they realize that just because they may seem “nice”, they may not be. Seeing them on a daily basis usually, it is easy to forget that they are individuals with families and concerns outside of their places of work. Many people turn a blind eye to the fact that they may have criminals working for them, hoping they won’t become a statistic like so many other South Africans.

Our Offi cer of the Month for March is Andreas Mabuza for his successful thwarting of an illegal entry attempt into the Estate.

Here are a few tips for new and existing employers:• Always obtain domestic workers’ identifi cation; be they citizens or migrant workers, keep a copy of their ID or passport.• Keep their address and contact details on fi le.• Pay them via EFT if at all possible. It provides a credible link to them should you need to trace them later on.• Check their references. Spend the time phoning the references provided. • If possible get their fi nancial status and background. Run fi nancial background checks on them on a regular basis if you can.• Never give them a key or a remote to open the gates or the house – keys may be lost or a worker may be forced to use them against their will.• Lock valuables away. Temptations can prove diffi cult to resist, especially when they are continuous. • Keep updated recent pictures of them.

Eight out of 10 residential robberies are undertaken with inside information or help. Remember this to guard against becoming a victim.

Easter Egg Hunt and Market at FWG

On Sunday morning, 22 March the children of Fourways Gardens Residential Estate enjoyed a wonderful Easter Egg Hunt in the Phase 1 Park. They were entertained for the morning by the

Easter Bunny and fun games! The morning started with the Egg Hunt at 09h00 and we had some extremely talented hunters! It was heart-warming to see how the kids who managed to fi nd a lot of eggs shared with the ones who were a little bit late or maybe a little bit shy… But it is safe to say that no child left empty handed! Over 1,500 eggs were hidden in the park!

The games began with pin the tail on the bunny for our little ones. This was followed by the ever popular egg and spoon race, three legged race, sack race and egg

throwing competition. The egg throwing competition was for adult and child teams of two and I must admit that some of the moms had very good throwing arms! In between the games there were also lucky draws where great prizes were won by our residents.

The activities were concluded with ABC Dance Studio showing our young residents some Hip-Hop moves. The kids were amazed to see how the dancers’ bodies could move after years of practice. A couple of dads even tried it out! Bash and Amy will

be offering Hip-Hop dance classes in the clubhouse from April 2015!

Throughout the morning, while the kids were being entertained, parents could enjoy shopping at the wonderful stalls that were in the park. The Little Field Mouse Market once again ensured that only good quality, unique and authentic goods were on sale for the enjoyment of residents.

Thank you for joining us and for enjoying this fun family event! Most of all, thank you to Pam Golding Properties for once again sponsoring this wonderful event for our residents.

Veld Gardening is Replacing English Gardens

Our Gardening Club had an interesting, highly social meeting on 18 March, in the garden of our member, Liz De Kock, in Phase 1.

Nineteen of our members met to listen to a great talk on NEW GARDENING TRENDS by Oscar Lockwood of LIFE LANDSCAPES. Oscar consults to many premier estates in the northern suburbs.

Due to the start of our DROUGHT PHASE in Africa, water will become an ever-decreasing commodity in future years. Exotic plants and lawns need lots of water, which we will not be able to afford or supply as years go on.

What to do?

Start changing your garden to a VELD garden, using VELD GRASSES and INDIGENOUS plants. To make it interesting, in the right seasons, plant a few ALOES – RED HOT POKERS, FEROX and MALATU, BULBS and SUCCULENTS in between your GRASSES.

GRASSES you can use include shade VELD GRASSES. Seek out primary VELD GRASS that requires sun 50% of the day, such as NATAL RED TIPPED, ROOIGRASS.

When grasses die down, cut them down.Use pebbles and gravel instead of lawn or plant up a variety of VELD GRASSES where lawn was. The kids will love it! You will be doing a big favour to our needs as humans to preserve our water supply.

CUTTING PROPAGATION DEMOWe then had a demonstration by IVAN VAN ECK (GREEN THUMB) on propagation of cuttings. Ivan arrived with a car full of healthy beautiful plants grown from cuttings. FREE PLANTS were offered to all members! Ivan showed us how to propagate PLECTRANTHUS, SUCCULENTS, ROSES (yes ROSES), herbs including ROSEMARY, BASIL, THYME AND SAGE.

WILD GARLIC with its pretty form and purple fl ower is tough enough for our climate and can also be used for cooking.GRASSES must be planted in PLUGS or single plants, 6 per square metre.

Dear gardener, you will never need to buy these

plants again!

The April Garden

Once again, summer is coming to an end. Many of our deciduous trees are starting to show their

autumn foliage. Soon, they’ll start dropping their leaves. This is nature’s way of mulching! Allow the leaves to become organic mulch in your fl ower beds or, if you fi nd this too messy, put them on the compost heap.

You will have noticed that bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, ranunculus and anemones have made their way onto the nursery shelves. Now is the time to buy them, but don’t plant straight away, as it’s still too warm. Wait until after Easter (mid April to early May). By then it will have cooled suffi ciently to plant your bulbs and also your winter annuals such as primulas, pansies sweet peas, calendulas, poppies and many other favourites. Winter veggies can be planted at the same time.

If you are planning to sow seed such as Namaqualand daisies and Virginian stocks, do it now! Prepare all beds to be sown under seed or planted with winter colour as follows:

• Remove spent summer annuals• Work in compost• Add organic 2:3:2

Once the seeds have been sown or colour planted keep the soil moist but never soggy.

Now is the time to switch your irrigation over to start watering in the mornings so as to prevent cold and frost damage in the winter. You should also start gradually reducing the amount of irrigation to shrubs, roses and trees. Remember, though, that plants such as Camellias, Azaleas and plants from the Western Cape region (e.g. Proteas and Ericas) enjoy winter rainfall. So for these varieties, make sure that you water throughout winter. Shower Azaleas and Camellias. This will prevent their buds from drying out and dropping before they bloom. It’s also a good idea to mulch Azaleas and Camellias with acid compost at this time of year. In fact, your whole garden would benefi t from being mulched with compost at this time of year. Compost helps to regulate soil temperatures and insulate plants’ roots from the cold. Not to mention that it is a source of nutrients for your garden!

Frost is usually a feature of the highveld winter. Remember to wrap your plants up before frost damage is done!

Many of our summer perennials are

fi nished fl owering now; and this is the time to lift and divide them. It’s also a good time to start implementing any design changes you may have planned for the garden. Autumn and winter are ideal times to plan and plant a garden. Whilst you may not see much growth in a newly planted garden at this time of year, the roots of plants are settling in and getting ready for the active growing season. This means that by the time spring comes around, your newly planted garden will be raring to go and have the full summer season to grow!

Kikuyu lawn and gulf green lawn both go dormant in winter. Mow them fortnightly in April and May and reduce the amount of water they receive, as they are growing more slowly now. All seasons evergreen and shade over lawns require year round maintenance. This is the time to be over seeding these lawns, as temperatures are cool enough for the seed to germinate.

Once all the above work has been attended to, put your feet up, snuggle under a warm “blankie”, and wait for the “Miracle of Spring”.

Please call our offi ces on 011 763 2925 for any further

information.

Bodyguard to the stars

From left to right: Rory Steyn, actor Gavin Hood (winner of an Oscar for the movie Tsotsi) and Bob Nicholls

Bob Nicholls strolls into the FWG clubhouse and is not what I’d anticipated. Yes, he’s well built,

but he’s also really friendly and open – definitely not the sinister bouncer type behind dark sunglasses!

British Bob is a security consultant and trained in VIP protection and instructed in unarmed combat in the UK and put his skills to good use in advising and training the protections team for the great man, Nelson Mandela, prior to his election as President.

Nicholls Steyn and Associates (Rory Steyn being Bob’s business partner) is a South African based specialist security solutions company, providing holistic

security solutions globally. They have provided services to local and international royalty, political figures, celebrities, sports personalities, private individuals and corporate executives.

Among the services they offer are executive protection, sport and event security, security training, security consulting, secure travel, risk management and investigations.

Bob’s success in training the security staff of the ANC, in the wake of the killing of Chris Hani, was such that he was commissioned to consult to the police (the first time that a civilian had ever been contracted to in this

way) and to assist in the integration of the police services in 1995.

Before joining Rory (who headed up one of President Mandela’s protection teams for the duration of his presidency), Bob was approached in 1995 by a billionaire Indian with an extensive family based in India to provide protection for the family and he still has several Indian and Middle Eastern clients.

Bob reminisces about the first time he visited FWG, saying that he could not put a finger on what was different about the place, when he realised: the kids were running around freely. He and his wife, Melany, vowed to move into FWG when they had their first child, and they did!

Resident ProfileBy Kathy Thersby

Fourways Gardens • 22 • April 2015

Bob has many juicy stories about the escapades of the rich and wealthy, but his loyalty precludes him from naming names.

Suffi ce it to say that Bob has seen it all where celebrities are concerned. One British supermodel in Paris had to be cajoled by Bob out of a revolving door that she had deliberately jammed with her body. She would only allow Bob to remove her from the door.

Another spoilt pair of Middle Eastern princes, no less, whilst on holiday in Paris were quite miffed to fi nd that their cousins each had a Ferrari on rental and they had none. Not for long: they insisted that they also had a Ferrari each, just in case they would need it, so Bob had to arrange it. As it happened, none of them even started the cars, and eventually Bob satisfi ed a long-standing ambition by driving a Ferrari down the Champs d’Élysées.

Not to be outdone, a devastatingly rich client with a six-storey super-yacht insisted that he simply must have a submarine to watch while parked in the bay. He would send it left and right as the whim took him and when he tired of that, he decadently threw dozens of sandwiches to the gulls. The same poor man was so irritated by the beach sand that he sent his private jet back home only so that the pilot would bring his personal Persian carpets so that he might spread them on the sand.

It must be rather diffi cult to pander to every little whim and fancy, but Bob’s quite relaxed about it. He tells me about the Middle Eastern guy who wanted to dine at a leading Sandton restaurant at 9pm after a game drive at Mabula, but who ran out of time after several drinks too many and then insisted he must have a two-hour nap before dining. That would mean only arriving at the restaurant after midnight. Of course, the problem went away after piles of dollars materialised. The restaurant staff were given a bunch of dollars, as were the violinists, and ten taxis were ordered to take them home. Everyone happy!

Bob’s quick to point out that while some of his clients may be completely OTT in their demands, he loves every bit of it: the travelling, the friends, the Indian Premier League matches (Nicholls Steyn and Associates has provided team security to all editions of the IPL tournament). Occasionally Melany will join him on a trip, and then she gets to see what Bob’s work entails, whether it’s protecting a dignitary on a privately chartered cruise liner in the Mediterranean or providing security for the world’s top international cricket players in the steamy humidity of Mumbai.

And then there’s the Academy Awards… This year was Bob’s 6th Oscars treading the red carpet, but in his case he had to keep a beady eye on everything and everyone so that there was no trouble.

Once while Bob was looking after a very famous US celebrity, during a high profi le visit to India, he was trying to leave a function and as he puts it, “Well, they say there are over a billion people in India and I think most of them were following us around Mumbai! We actually had press and media guys swarming around and even on top of our car, lying on the roof and leaning over trying to take photos of her! The road was completely blocked by literally hundreds of reporters, plus the ‘normal’ people who came to see what the fuss was about, which in turn drew more people to see what the big crowd was all about!

“This lady is always insistent that her security deal with people politely but that is a major challenge as in some countries sections of the media just don’t listen and take advantage of any “fl exibility” that you give to them.

“On another occasion on the same trip, we actually had a group of media guys break into an old ladies’ home that was used as an ashram for widows in a certain city, because they mistakenly thought the client was not going to give them an interview that we had promised she would. On her way down to the gate (where the press guys were) to do the interview, the old lady (who was the host) called her in for tea, so she popped into the house instead of continuing down to the press, who were outside the gate. They saw that she had gone inside and decided that she had changed her mind and was not going to do the interview, so they stormed the gate, breaking it down.

“I had to tell the client that we needed to leave immediately, so chucked her in the car and left by way of a back gate, whilst the rest of my team tried to keep order at the house. The media then searched all over for her and attacked the house, throwing bricks at the windows and at the security guys!

“We were all very pleased when that trip was over,” concluded Bob.

Bob and his SA team save 150 people’s lives after terrorists lay siege to the Taj MahalFor 150 people at the Taj Mahal hotel on 26 November 2008, thank heavens Bob was around. He had arrived in the city to work on security arrangements for the Indian Champions League to be held in Mumbai.

While having dinner with his team on the top fl oor of the Taj, they were told by other South African guests that friends intending to join them for dinner hadn’t turned up because gunfi re had broken out inside the hotel. Shortly after, there were two loud blasts. Bob knew from prior experience in India that there would be no hotel security or police nearby. Although the restaurant door was locked, it was glass.

Bob and his team had to take charge of the situation because diners were becoming anxious. After a quick recce, they decided the conference room nearby would be easiest to secure even though there were about 100 terrifi ed guests sitting in there. Everybody from the restaurant was shuffl ed in there and they started barricading the door with tables and chairs. Bob addressed all of the guests and told them that he and his team would look after them and that they should do as instructed.

Bob’s team had managed to get hold of knives and meat cleavers from the kitchen and radio sets used for routine communication by the hotel staff, but they could raise no answer for a couple of hours. At last they got through to the security manager who said there was chaos on the ground fl oor, with grenades and bullet-spraying gunmen.

Without adequate information, the South Africans decided not to risk lives and told everybody they would be staying put. Bob would regularly address the room to try keep spirits up whilst the sound of gunshots could frequently be heard. Some hours later, there was another very loud blast and they saw fi re and smoke. “At this stage, the security manager came to our fl oor and we un-barricaded the doors and let him in. We talked, and agreed that if there were a fi re near us, the lights would go out and there would be utter panic.”

When they felt it was safe to evacuate, Bob asked everybody to turn their cellphones off and turned out the lights. Bob and his staff led the 150 terrifi ed guests down the fi re escape for 25 fl oors, even having to carry on a chair an 80-year-old woman. The street below looked clear, and once at the door, everybody ran for their lives. The ordeal had started at 9pm and was fi nished at 4am.

Keith Alexander – All in the atmosphere

In attempting to understand the work of Keith Alexander, one must appreciate that he was both surrealist and realist.

These may appear mutually exclusive, but that is not necessarily so. Professor TH Matthews puts it like this: “Alexander’s work seems romantic to me in that it deals with far-off, forgotten places and things. There is a dream-like quality to it, yet it is also ”realist” in the sense of his actually having been there, and walked in the sand and up the steps and through the door.”

Alexander was born on the 26th of April 1946 on a farm in what was then Rhodesia, the farm having belonged to his family since 1890. His education occurred in London, and at Peterhouse College in Salisbury, where the extensive library and progressive teaching helped to broaden his horizons. There followed the University of Natal, where he studied fi ne art, specialising in sculpture.

Alexander explained to David Robbins, his biographer, that the switch from sculpture to painting had more than an economic motivation. He was constantly aware of

the bush war in Rhodesia, and, “more and more the things I wanted to express couldn’t be done in sculptural form.” Early experiments in surrealism gave way to a straightforward realism, and these early paintings are remarkable for their authentic feel.

Alexander’s realism became imbued with an additional, essential quality. He explains it like this: “I had sought a new artistic method by which I could best express my emotions. But the new way I found came not so much from the realistic treatment of my subjects as from the atmosphere I was able to create inside realistic work. The atmosphere became the real vehicle for my most satisfying self-expression.” It is this atmosphere that distinguishes Keith Alexander’s work from that of any other artist. It is his uncanny ability to create atmosphere in the bleakest of ruined landscapes that has put his work at the pinnacle of South African art.

Keith Alexander died on the 17th of November 1998, having had only 25 years in which to produce his impressive body

of work. In the words of David Robbins, “(his works ) are a monument to an extraordinary technical ability and… some of the most striking imagery of change and encroachment and anxiety ever fashioned in South Africa.”

The work may be heavy with atmosphere, and the subjects starkly realistic, but one should not lose sight of the man. Keith Alexander was, by all accounts, a gentle, sweet man, with a keen sense of humour. He told Robbins, “I have always painted on canvas. It’s got a nice bounce to it. And I’ve always painted fairly large…. But if you make a lot of it sky, the process goes much quicker.”

If you would like to fi nd out more about Keith Alexander, and for some beautiful images of his work, read Keith Alexander- the artist in retrospect by David Robbins.

Five of Alexander’s beautiful original oils will be available for viewing at the gallery during April. Take the opportunity to see a rare South African talent.

A Dynamic Concept in Furniture Retailing arrives in Kyalami

The furniture industry has had quite a shake-up over the past 12 months, with a number of well-known brands going out of business. Those that have weathered the storm have become stronger. Lots & Crates is an example of the latter, thanks to an innovative business model conceptualised by Craig Rheeder.

In mid-2010, the global economy was

going through a recession. Despite

the hype around the FIFA World Cup

that buoyed South Africa’s economy,

people everywhere were sensitive to

price. Undaunted, Craig Rheeder decided

to open a brand new furniture store in

Blairgowrie. The core philosophy of the

business revolved around buying up job

lots of quality furniture that he could offer at

reasonable prices to discerning consumers.

He called his new brainchild “Lots & Crates.”

Craig Rheeder, MD of Lots & Crates.

Craig’s confidence came from many

years’ experience – for 11 years, he was an

auctioneer of cars and household goods

and then he joined Wetherlys. For six years

he headed up the Wetherlys office furniture/

contracts division, became their Ops

Director and eventually

Managing Director of

the Wetherlys factory,

known as Roodefurn.

This gave him great

insight into some of

the pitfalls that can be

encountered in the

furniture industry.

After leaving Wetherlys

at the end of 2009,

Craig took time out to

thanks to an innovative business model conceptualised by Craig Rheeder.

Craig’s confidence came from many contemplate what he wanted to do going

forward. He came to the conclusion that

many problems facing the larger retailers are

due to the breakdown in communication

and he decided “it doesn’t have to be like

that.”

“One of the pitfalls that I found particularly

troublesome when I was running the

Roodefurn factory was the ‘made to order’

concept. In a supply chain where numerous

breakdown points exist, many orders that are

placed don’t turn out the way the customers

originally ordered the furniture. We often

ended up with irate customers and furniture

that had to be exchanged.”

He realised that the key was to simplify the

operation. He also knew that he preferred

Advertorial

Fourways Gardens • 27 • April 2015

to be interacting with the customers, rather than handling the back

end of the business. So, he came up with a nifty formula that solved

many of the logistical niggles that furniture stores experience and

gave him the freedom to be able to mingle with the people in the

store.

“At Lots & Crates we sell off the floor. The customer gets instant

gratification. There’s no wait. And it’s not a lucky dip. You get what

you see. And we outsource the deliveries, to free our staff up so that

they can focus on customer service. One of my mottos is: why wait

six weeks when you can buy today and sit tonight?”

With storage facilities being an important component of his formula,

Craig opted for Northlands for his second store (which he opened

in 2013) and Kyalami for his third store. The Kyalami branch has

excellent storage, high visibility from the busy Main Road and plenty

of parking. Originally a manufacturing plant, the store was renovated

within two months and by the 1st of November 2014 Craig was

already trading.

The style and genre of the furniture is mainly mid-contemporary

with a tinge of French Provincial and country thrown in. “We stick

to furniture that appeals to a broad cross-section of tastes and steer

clear of anything that isn’t functional,” Craig explains. In addition

to an amazing range of cane furniture, patio, lounge and dining

furniture, Lots & Crates has coffee tables, side boards and wall units,

along with many of the finishing touches such as lamps, scatter

cushions, vases, clocks and mirrors.

“We have built a reputation amongst the factories, so we’re seldom

short of good stock. Some of the stock is imported, but around

70% is locally-made. They could be factory over-runs, end of

ranges, samples or unique once-off items. New containers and

consignments are unpacked every week – there are always bargains

waiting to be snapped up!”

Conversations that get results

Anyone home?

You got away a little early from the offi ce, traffi c wasn’t too bad and you’re looking forward to an evening catching up with your family. You’d like to relax with the people you love

and enjoy. Your day was a frustrating one of endless meetings in which few people paid much attention to the meeting itself. Most were continuously checking e-mail and text messages, some left to take phone calls and others tapped openly on their iPads. You’re not sure that anyone achieved much of anything. ‘Anyone home?’ you say brightly as you enter the house. ‘Hi dad,’ a child responds in muted tones without turning away from the TV. Your teenage daughter is absorbed with eyes and thumbs glued to her iPad. Your son mumbles, ‘Hi… I’m busy’ without looking up from his computer screen. Your partner is talking animatedly to the cell phone tucked under her chin while she prepares supper. You decide to go and watch TV in the lounge. As you sit down, your phone rings. It’s the offi ce.

Everyone’s home. No one’s there.

Electronic communication is part and parcel of our lives. We couldn’t do without it and most of the time we wouldn’t want to. But that doesn’t mean we can’t make choices about the kind of lives we lead.

At work you can choose whether to send an e-mail or walk to a colleague’s offi ce to discuss a problem face to face. You can choose to put your phone on silent and exit from your mail to concentrate on an important project. A team can agree to ban cell phones from meetings.

At home you can also make choices. You can set aside time to spend with children on hobbies or sports. Family suppers need not include cell phones or background TV. You can choose to give your full attention to important conversations; negotiating decisions that affect the whole family, helping someone sort out a personal problem, or just listening with your full undivided attention while a child tells you about something that is important to them.

The unarguable truth is that you cannot give your undivided attention to more than one thing at a time. Some things need that kind of attention. Where should you be putting yours?

Walking into the Just Cruizin store in Broadacres feels like I’m back on the Isle of Wight

during Cowes Week, mingling with the yacht owners and their entourages. The store is light and airy, with the windows and doors folding back to take in the tranquil sun-drenched gardens, giving it a distinctly nautical personality.

Just Cruizin clothing started from humble beginnings in 1985 at the Greenmarket Square in Cape Town. Thirty years later, Just Cruizin continues to produce a range of top quality clothing, which focuses on simplicity, comfort, ease and versatility, for both women and men.

The Just Cruizin range, consisting of cool cotton and casual garments inspired by nature, is proudly South African, manufactured at a central facility in the heart of Cape Town. Using only natural fabrics and an over-dye process, the designers have come up with easy-to-wear, fashionable clothing that is available in a range of muted

LEG VEIN SURGERY:THE NEWEST MEDICAL INNOVATION

Four out of ten people suffer from varicose veins, caused by factors like genetic inheritance, obesity and pregnancy. It affects both sexes, standing professionals and older persons.

Most cases of varicose veins result from venous reflux disease caused by incompetent valves

in the great saphenous vein which runs from the ankle to the groin in each leg. This incompetent vein causes blood to congregate and results in the leg veins bulging. It’s not only unsightly, it often causes leg pain, ulcerations and swelling. It may affect one or both legs.

Never fear, your answer is here in the form of the minimally-invasive surgery, called the radiofrequency ablation procedure (RFA) also known as theVNUS ClosureFast.

To set a comparison: one traditional method of treating veins is vein-stripping– this is performed in-theatre, involving general anesthetic, an overnight stayin hospital with a prolonged recovery of some weeks. The problem is thatthe veins can come back, with a reoccurrence of the condition.

The RFA offers much more permanent results. With its huge cosmetic benefits, one wonders why the traditional methods are still used. RFA is a proven, minimally invasive, walk-in-and-walk-out procedure with almost zero recovery time.

Fourways Gardens • 37 • April 2015

Considering this alternative, who wants to be admitted to hospital?

In the doctor’s rooms, a teensy incision is made where a catheter is inserted into the vein and a radiofrequency energy treats it. Some patients need to wear compression stockings temporarily after RFA but are back at work the next day, with minimal or no pain, bruising or scarring.

Over 1 million RFAs have been performed globally since 1998 with a success rate of 97%. With so many sufferers, why don’t more people know about RFA?

After conducting some research, most patients will opt for the quickest, most painless treatment but they frequently ask – will this “in-rooms” procedure be covered by medical aids or from ordinary hospital benefits? The answer is yes. As this procedure arises out of medical necessity – a preventative measure of a condition that

can lead to severe complications like, deepvein thrombosis, venous hypertension, affected mobility and disability – your doctor will motivate RFA with your medical aid. Most South African medical aids will then cover your accountfrom ordinary hospital benefits.

Daniel Lehutjo, acting chief executive officer and registrar of the Council for Medical Schemes says, “The council is not aware of schemes that specifically exclude this procedure in their benefits. The benefit would depend on the specific scheme and benefit option concerned. However, pre-authorisation will be necessary for the treatment.”

At Medi-Clinic Morningside there is a team that is dedicated to vein treatments and are available to help anyone with troublesome veins. Their vision is to provide the most patientfriendly and effective treatment, but they understand that, under current terms of medical aid reimbursement with their exclusions and scheme rules, there is much paperwork. This might be the reason why this kind of treatment is not more readily available. The expert admin staff at Medi-ClinicMorningside are committed to help you fight the battle with your medical aid to ensure that the best treatment is made available to you.

Free vein screening is being conducted at the Medi-Clinic Morningside. As part of a promotion to educate the public about the radiofrequency ablation (RFA) procedure, the screening, worth R1800, is free of charge for a period, however, patients will need to pay the doctor’s consultation fee of R730 upfront. Patients will receive a full invoice which can then be submitted to their medical aid.

To book for the free screening, call Lisa West on 011 784 2804, visit www.veintreatments.co.za or pop into suite 200 at the Medi-Clinic Morningside.

Weed and the Teen Brain

As a result of ongoing brain development, it is natural for teenagers to try new things and take risks. Research indicates that brain development in the frontal cortex continues until about the age of 25, so any drugs or alcohol used during these years can be detrimental to the developing brain.

One of the most common drugs being used by teens is Marijuana. For many teens,

when it comes to smoking weed, there is a perception that it is ‘safe’ and not a big deal. Parents may agree - they may have used it back in the 60s or 70s and they have turned out OK. Many people think it is harmless when used in moderation. The reality is that the number of teens smoking marijuana is steadily on the increase. Recent American research shows a 170% increase in daily use amongst teens in the past 20 years. As many as a third of high school students surveyed admitted to smoking weed at least once a month, with 6.5 % smoking daily. (Reported at the American Psychological Association’s Annual Convention – Aug 2014.)

Research projects have all concluded that the developing teenage brain is particularly vulnerable to excessive marijuana use. Of great concern is that the resultant abnormalities in the brain and memory problems still persist in subjects two years after stopping. The memory-related structures also seem to shrink and collapse, indicating

possible decreased neuron volume with associated long-term detrimental effects.

Marijuana explainedCannabis sativa or Marijuana has many pseudonyms: “grass”, “weed”, “pot”, “ganja”, “herb” and “boom”, to name but a few. It is a hemp plant and the stems, seeds and flowers are dried. Mostly it is smoked but it can also be eaten if used as an ingredient.

Marijuana contains about 400 chemicals. Only one of these is the chemical that causes the mind-altering effects - TCH (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). It changes the workings of the brain and distorts how the world is perceived by the mind. Marijuana slows down and can even stop development in the frontal cortex.

It is very important to note that the amount of THC in weed has increased significantly over the years. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that on average, today’s weed contains about 10% THC, far more than back in the day when parents may have experimented.

Fourways Gardens • 41 • April 2015

When the weed is smoked, THC passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, which then carries it to every organ of the body. In the brain, THC molecules attach themselves to the neurons, which have cannabinoid receptors in the Hippocampus (for memory), the Cerebellum (for movement) and the Frontal Cortex (for thinking). These receptors control memory, thinking, pleasure, concentration, sensory perception and co-ordinated movement. The marijuana results in dopamine being released, creating the initial feeling of being “high” and then later, the negative changes in mood, perception, co-ordination and problem solving.

Cannabis effects are worse and more permanent in the developing teen brain. This is essentially because the endocannabinoid (the body’s own cannabis) system plays a central part in the development of neural circuitry during teenage years (affecting mood, motivation, memory learning) – everything needed to lay the foundation for a happy, successful adulthood.

When smoked, the effects are almost immediate and can last for up to 3 hours. However, regular users can feel the side-effects for days.

What the research shows“It needs to be emphasized that regular cannabis use, which we consider once a week, is not safe and may result in addiction and neurocognitive damage, especially in youth,” said Krista Lisdahl, an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, in a press release.

Multiple studies using brain imaging

show significant changes in the structure of the brain. Findings have also shown that: • Brain development may be altered –

it negatively impacts brain structure volume, the quality of the white matter, and abnormalities in the grey matter, associated with intelligence.

• It can result in chronic bronchitis, addiction, car accidents and decreased life achievement.

• Cognitive function is impacted and can even decline.

• There is short-term memory loss, which causes poor attention and memory recall, and results in poor academic results.

• Loss of motivation and feeling detached.

• Users may start to have low self-confidence, which affects mood.

• A decrease in IQ (research found up to an 8 point drop for regular users).

• The potency of the weed and the frequency of use may increase the risk of mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis.

• THC affects the frontal cortex so judgement is affected, possibly resulting in risky behaviour such as sexual promiscuity, alcohol abuse, driving under the influence, and so on.

Helping our teensSupportive parenting: If you suspect your child is experimenting with or using weed, don’t ignore it hoping that the situation will pass – it is best to nip it in the bud. Your family GP is often a useful first port of call.

Goal person: Encourage them to think about the type of person they want to become – their goal person. Encourage them to ask themselves if smoking

weed would take them further away from or closer to their goal person. If their answer is that it is going to take them further away, why are they doing it? This can give you as the parent some interesting insight into what and how they are thinking.

10-Second Rule: Actively work with them on ways to control their impulses. Try the 10-second rule – to take 10 seconds to STOP, and THINK before ACTING. Sometimes this is just enough time to get them to step back and reassess their choices.

Physical activities and hobbies: Boredom is often a factor in our teens straying and getting caught up in risky activities. Endorphins are the body’s feel good hormones, its own morphine as it were. Endorphins and other chemicals are released naturally through sport and other activities, creating what is referred to as a “runners” high and a state of calm. Exercise is a great way to release endorphins which lead to feelings of happiness and contentment. Encourage your children to create good habits – activities that will naturally release endorphins. Research has shown that activities like playing an instrument, creating art, meditation, maintaining strong social networks – all positively change brain structure, improve memory and even intelligence.

Zimbabwe – finding new birds and friends

TravelBy James Clarke

Pictures by Mary Broadley

Fourways Gardens • 42 • April 2015

A Miombo woodland near Harare city centre.

We were nervous about going to Zimbabwe on a birding expedition – just the two of us. Mary and I were keen on doing some serious birding, fi rst around the capital,

Harare, for three days and then six days in the Eastern Highlands on the Mozambique border. The Highlands are one of the most rewarding regions in the world for rare birds.

Zimbabwe’s President’s aggressive anti-white sentiments had given the country a rather menacing image when it comes to tourism for palefaces. How safe would it be, we wondered?

When I last visited Zimbabwe, many years ago, I was struck by how friendly and relaxed its people were and how welcome they made one feel. I am delighted to say we found them as welcoming as ever.

In fact it was the good natured Zimbabweans themselves, as much as anything else, that made our 10 days totally enjoyable.

We fl ew into Harare – anything to avoid driving through that chaotic border crossing at Beit Bridge – and hired a small car for our three days in the city (US$230).

To my surprise Harare is something of a birder’s paradise.

A major reason for choosing Harare was to see Monovale Vlei in the western suburbs. We stayed at Crake Cottage close to the swamp. It is a modest two-roomed place in the grounds of a smallholding just minutes from the city centre.

We paid R1 440 a night B&B. (Zimbabwe uses the US dollar as its main currency. A few establishments accept rands.)

Monovale Vlei’s 34ha tall reed bed is surrounded by wetland almost 600ha in extent and is home to at least 240 bird species.

We were particularly anxious to see a Corncrake there and the Streaky-breasted Flufftail. These would have been “lifers” for us both but they evaded us.

Perhaps I should explain that a “lifer” is a species one has never seen before – and it gets added to one’s “life-list”. A life-list records all the species one has positively identifi ed in one’s life – in our case just in Southern Africa below the Zambezi/Cunene line.

As an outdoor pursuit, birding has now eclipsed fi shing. The same in the United States and Britain. Birders fi nd it aesthetically rewarding and it calls for keen observation, often intrepidness and as much science and study and challenge as you care to put into it.

In Harare I picked up 14 lifers – unprecedented for me. I was to chalk up an amazing 41 before leaving Zimbabwe. Mary, with a life-list now nudging an impressive 700 species, had, on a previous birding trip to the Eastern Highlands, chalked up two dozen lifers: this time she scored yet another two dozen.

We found ourselves wading through ankle-deep clear water in the vlei and envied our guide, Ian Riddel, with his gumboots and waterproof leggings.

We struck a serious dilemma. The only way to see fl ufftails and crakes, whose habitat is low down at the base of the reeds, is to fl ush them out as one walks.

Travel

Fourways Gardens • 43 • April 2015

Inevitably, though rarely, nests are crushed underfoot. Birders have been known to leave the footpaths and walk up to 15 abreast through the reeds.

During our visit a group was using a dog to do the fl ushing (a sort of pointer that would not harm the birds). This seemed a far less destructive method.

Riddel tried calling up fl ufftails using recorded calls but, again, this can have detrimental effects on bird behaviour. For instance, in Kruger Park’s Pafuri region there’s a suspicion that the excessive use of bird recordings is causing some species to ignore natural calls and even abandon the area.

The Monovale Swamp attracts birders worldwide and, as a Ramsar site, it is recognised as being of global signifi cance. But the Ramsar Convention is not enough to protect it from insensitivity.

There is certainly a need for a code of behaviour.

One can understand why bird guides take chances. They charge each birder $100 a day and some clients will have travelled from overseas and expect the guides to lead them to rare species – diffi cult in dense forest and in high reeds.

The guides often know very precisely where various species hang out, even so we spent many pleasurable hours hunting down a single bird that we’d only known from pictures.I was amazed at the number of brilliant birding spots in Harare – preserved Miombo forest and mixed woodland – beautiful to walk in and easy to reach.

We drove 20km out to Criston Bank and walked along the Mazowe River and into the rocky hills in search of the elusive Boulder Chat, which we found.

* * *

Despite the decay of Harare’s municipal infrastructure – roads are appallingly potholed – people are cheerful. The nowadays politically impotent whites don’t whinge. The spirit that helped them develop Zimbabwe as a one-time food exporter, is still there even if so many once-productive white-owned farms are not. Despite almost daily power cuts and water stoppages, the proprietors of Crake Cottage, John and Dorothy Wakeling, are unfazed and simply slip out and turn on the generator or pump. There was no muttering.

For the three nights we stayed in Harare we ventured out into the unlit streets in search of places to eat.

We found nearby a most delightful restaurant (d’Eros) run by a friendly Italian-speaking Ethiopian couple. It was as good as anything in South Africa. We also discovered a splendid Greek restaurant (Opa) just round the corner with an obliging and cheerful team of waiters – black and white. We came to love Zimbabwe.

HIGH FIVE FOR MOTHER’S DAY

When thinking about a gift for mom on Mother’s Day, remember that what most mothers want on Mother’s Day is to be showed (and told) that they are loved and appreciated. That’s all. Gifts are great, but only if they show that you put lots of thought into choosing the present. Often mothers prefer a home-made gift simply because that shows that you went to some effort.

Here are some ways of making mom very happy on Mother’s Day and they won’t cost very much at all.

Start mom’s day by hiding little notes that she will fi nd as she

goes about her day.

If you can’t bake cupcakes or biscuits on your own, buy them and decorate

them with mom’s favourites, for example fl owers and butterfl ies, or even

with Smarties and Jelly Tots.

If you’re old enough, give mom a lovely surprise by making her breakfast in bed. Or you could make lunch or dinner, whichever suits you, and mom will love not having to cook.

A coupon book is always a great idea: you can include coupons for hugs, for a massage, a foot rub, a lie-in on

the weekend, a week of emptying the dishwasher, a picnic on the lawn… think

about what mom would like.

2

4

5

How about framing a picture for mom that you’ve painted, especially if it was one of her favourites, or a beautiful photograph?

3

If you’re old enough, give mom

about what mom would like.

51

Remember, it’s all about showing mom that she is valued and that she’s the best mom

in the world!

GraffitiDespite the additional acres of

naked concrete around us – especially in Johannesburg

following the construction of the Gautrain route – there has been a fall off in graffiti and I am wondering if it is because the slogan-writers are now too busy disseminating their pearls of wisdom via the Net.

Naked concrete was always an open invitation to graffiti artists.

And have you noticed how bumper-sticker slogans have also fallen off, so to speak, perhaps for the same reason.

Remember how, 10 years ago, motorists spoke to each other via these stickers – “My wife’s other car is a broom” … “Marry me and I’ll never bother you again.”.

This type of wit takes bright minds – just the sort of people who nowadays are sharing their humour and their dire warnings to a world-wide audience via the Net. It’s certainly cheaper and more effective than spray paint and one doesn’t have to go outside in the dead of night to write “Skin heads have more hair than brains” or add to an aggressive slogan such as “Black Power!” – “Is it cheaper than electricity?”

Slogan-adorned T-shirts are also not as popular as they used to be. Until recently (say 4.30 yesterday afternoon) the T-shirt-adorned chest, or of more interest to many of us, the T-shirt-adorned bosom – was a major stronghold of free speech.

Even in repressive hot island republics and the more centralist-governed nations you could write things on a wall or on your T-shirt that you would never dare openly shout out – well, not in front of a policeman.

If the police objected to a message on your T-shirt – let’s say it read “DOWN WITH FILTHY FASCIST PIGDOGS AND LET’S HAVE DEMOCRACY” – you could always say a kind man had just given you the shirt because you had been mugged and robbed of the one you put on that morning which read “VIVA LA PRESIDENTE!”

In South Africa, where for the time being we still have free speech and you can say anything that comes to mind, you still have to be careful. If, for instance, you are invited to lunch at the Inanda Polo Club, you would be ill-advised to wear a T-shirt reading “ONE SETTLER ONE BULLET”.

I recall 30 years ago a slogan reading “Free Mandela!” and beneath it somebody added “…with every packet of cornflakes”.

And on a graffiti-smothered wall: “This wall will shortly be available in paperback”.

A young woman of my acquaintance was canoeing down the Zambezi wearing a black souvenir shirt emblazoned with big numerals “The Star’s record circulation figure”. Her companions, tourists from the US and Germany, complained that it was so incongruous it was spoiling their pictures.

She rummaged in her bag for a different one, discarded the first which read “Life is bio-degradable art”, and settled for “Mutate now and beat the rush”.

Did not Voltaire say, “I may not agree with what your T-shirt says, but I will fight to the very death your right to wear it”?

I recall seeing in Kruger Park a tourist wearing a T-short emblazoned with “I lost my heart in Johannesburg. And my wallet and my cellphone”.
