French language and culture: crossing borders (Bernardette Holmes MBE) - Keynote - 10:00-10:30

To step beyond the limits of our first language and begin to see the world from the outside in is perhaps the most significant moment in our educational journey. In an interconnected world where English appears to dominate, it may seem less important to learn the languages of others. Yet, it is this very dominance that makes it all the more relevant. In this introductory session, we will explore the benefits of learning French, showing how the study of French language and culture can inform and enrich our attitudes, our values and our world view, helping us to reflect, to think critically and to develop a greater understanding of diversity. In a world in flux, French is a key language of the future.

Bernardette is widely recognised for her work on language policy development and has been actively involved in the development of the national curriculum for languages and its assessment since its inception. Bernardette is the criteria writer for the current GCSE in modern and ancient languages and the subject content criteria writer for Advanced Level in French, German and Spanish and for the less widely taught languages. Her recent research interests include languages and employability, cultural agility and intercultural understanding and bilingual learning. Bernardette was Principal Investigator of Born Global, the British Academy policy research project into languages in employment. She has international experience in language policy profiling as a member of an expert panel for the Council of Europe and through her research and development of Content and Language Integrated Learning in schools and in teacher education. She is strand leader for cultural competence and intercultural understanding for the RIPL (Research into Primary Languages) Network. Bernardette is Campaign Director of Speak to the Future, the campaign for languages and a Past President of the Association for Language Learning.

Speaking and progression in the primary classroom using stories (Nathalie Paris) - Session 1 - 10:40-11:30

In this workshop, participants will be exploring the “Language Progression and Assessment at KS2” document, created by the Ensemble Project; they will look at how using stories in French can help us achieve progression and demonstrate it, with a particular focus on speaking skills. This will be a practical and ideas-based session.

Nathalie was a secondary languages teacher for 19 years with responsibility for outreach primary languages teaching and transition from KS2 to KS3; for the past 4 years she has worked as a part-time primary languages teacher and the owner of Nattalingo: it features a unique French mobile library bus available for storytelling sessions. Nathalie is a speaker, a blogger, a podcaster and a football coach… with skills which she uses to enhance language teaching and learning around her. Nathalie is also an active volunteer for the Association for Language Learning and teaches at the Petite École de Newcastle.

Teaching with the Primary French project for Key Stage 2 (Catherine Cheater) - Session 1 - 10:40-11:30

The  Primary French Project  provides  free teaching materials  that aim to train all who teach French in Key Stage 2.  Suitable for all practitioners, including those who have no prior knowledge of the language, and also specialist linguists who are new to teaching children in Key Stage 2, the materials aim to train the teacher by providing the subject knowledge that is needed in order to meet the requirements of the Programme of Study for Languages in Key Stage 2, as well as age-appropriate language-teaching methodology. The teaching materials include lesson plans and PowerPoint Presentations for the interactive whiteboard, as well as images and voice recordings necessary to model language and grammatical concepts to children. The Primary French Project materials can be freely downloaded from www.institut-francais.org.uk/primaryfrench

Catherine Cheater is an author and consultant with an expertise in the field of languages in the primary school in the UK. Teaching French with TV5Monde (Valérie Laplanche-Ferguson) - Session 1 - 10:40-11:30

This workshop is aimed at secondary school teachers from KS3 to KS5 who want to refresh their classes with new audio-visual aids from TV5, the free French TV channel. Participants will concentrate on different sources and types of materials available and suitable for students aged 12 to 18. This material can be integrated with most school curricula, engaging students and creating a link with current language and interests.  The material selected is appropriate for different levels of ability and the progression from A1 to A2 to B1. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop or tablet to navigate the site.

Valerie has taught French at the French Institute in Edinburgh for over 20 years. During that time, she has taught all levels of ability and has been involved in primary school teacher training within the Modern Languages for the Primary School and the 1+2 programmes. As a qualified teacher trainer for the DELF and DALF French certifications, she has been looking at ways to include these lifelong qualifications into the national curriculum at school and university levels. Valerie is an accredited trainer for TV5 and has been working with primary and secondary school teachers on supporting their class work with audio-visual material.

Speaking strategies for the new GCSE French (Philip Campagna) - Session 1 - 10:40-11:30

The new GCSE requires teachers to build on the KS2 and KS3 programmes of study and look for the best ways to develop students’ speaking, particularly spontaneous speaking skills. This session offers some practical ideas in order to achieve this at both KS3 and KS4 by exploring what exactly is meant by spontaneity in MFL speaking, how to develop spontaneity throughout KS3/4, how to engage reluctant speakers, how to reconcile the spontaneity agenda with the grammar/accuracy, and how to set up a range of activities which are easily applicable to a number of topics.

Philip is the South West Regional and also the National Director for Network for Languages and Network for Learning. He is a Senior Lecturer and PGCE Course Leader for Secondary MFL at Bath Spa University, and is also the PGCE Primary MFL Coordinator. Philip was Head of the MFL Faculty at a large Wiltshire Community College for six years, and worked for ten years as a Primary Languages Coordinator in Wiltshire. He regularly presents for Network for Languages in the South West and in other regions. He has also presented at National and International Language Conferences.

Phonics and game-based activities with "1,2,3 ... Tivi5monde!" (Valérie Laplanche- Ferguson) - Session 2 - 11:40-12:30

What if you used a cartoon, a children's TV report or an animal documentary to learn a few words of French for your pupils? The "1,2,3 ... Tivi5monde!" resource pack contains educational activities, flashcards, pictures, dice and even an origami game to create classes for children from 6 to 12 years old. Activities are simple and fun: we watch TV, we talk with cards, we play with words and sounds, we express ourselves with our bodies. This workshop will offer participants original ideas and techniques on how to use  "1,2,3 ... Tivi5monde!"  in the primary classroom, including a complimentary kit to take home!

Learning French through films (Alexia Larkins/Into Film) - Session 2 - 11:40-12:30

Explore how to use short and feature-length French films in the classroom to enhance the teaching and learning of French. We will take part in some film watching and analysis activities using the 3Cs and 3Ss (character, colour, camera, story, setting and sound) which encourage active listening and contextualise  language learning.  The activities have at their core the concept of ‘film as text’ to support the raising of attainment in literacy (reading, writing, speaking and listening).

Alexia taught in a primary school for four years, successfully weaving film into curricular and extracurricular activity, before joining Into Film in 2014. She works with educators of 5-19 year olds as well as other professional bodies to create, deliver and evaluate film and filmmaking-based training and resources. Aside from teaching and film, Alexia has worked in the journalism and charity sectors for the past 11 years.

Building research skills for the French A level (Catherine Déchirot) - Session 2 - 11:40-12:30

The new A level requires students to be able to develop strong research skills for their Independent Research Project and to share their findings in a presentation and spontaneous conversation. This is a very challenging step from GCSE to A Level. This session offers some practical ideas used to make students more confident with conducting research in the target language and make them more independent learners. These research skills help to develop their reading skills, increase their vocabulary range, which will lead to improving their spontaneous speaking.  In this session participants will focus on the importance for authentic texts at KS3 and KS4, practical strategies used with A level classes, student feedback, and next steps.

Catherine Déchirot is currently Head of French at Bryanston School, an Independent School in the South West. She has worked in State Schools for seventeen years as a language teacher and eleven years as a Head of Languages. She is a Presenter for Network for Languages on Skills-based Teaching and Learning and has presented both regionally and nationally including ALL Language World 2016. She is an experienced MFL PGCE mentor and an associate tutor at Bath Spa University.

The use of CLIL in the primary classroom (Pippa Jacobs) - Session 3 - 13:40-14:30

Using cross-curricular links is something primary teachers are good at. This workshop will demonstrate how these links can be made to great effect taking a subject area and learning about it via a second language. Examples will be given of how History, Science, Geography and other subjects can be taught in the target language. The huge benefits to pupil cognition, motivation, engagement and teacher satisfaction will convince you to try it, if you haven’t already done so, and will give you lots of new ideas if you are already hooked!

Pippa Jacobs is a trainer and mentor of teachers in MFL, with a specialist interest in CLIL. She comes from a background of primary classroom teaching, becoming a primary MFL specialist teacher later in her career. She mentored teachers for Oxfordshire before writing CPD training courses in MFL and delivering them to teachers nationwide for Network for Languages. She has often been invited to speak as a guest lecturer at a variety of universities, such as Oxford Brookes, Reading, Winchester, and Anglia Ruskin. She is currently the co-director of the newly launched CLIL Centre of Excellence based at Westminster University, London where she trains and mentors for Network for Languages London.

Using CLIL-based collaborative strategies in the secondary French classroom (Judith Woodfield) - Session 3 - 13:40-14:30

This workshop will be a practical session on the range of techniques, including visual and collaborative ones, used in CLIL and present a number of models that can be used by French teachers to plan and resource their lessons from Key Stage 3 to KS 5.

Judith Woodfield is Head Teacher of Bordesley Green Girls' School in Birmingham (BGGS). She has been teaching using CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) since 2001 and has introduced this technique now at three schools. She won the Franco British Council Award in 2004 and Mary Glasgow Prize in 2006 based on work with Ana Neofitou at Tile Hill Wood School in Coventry. CLIL is an internationally recognised method of accelerated learning with transferable skills which impact positively on all subjects. It has been shown to raise results not only in MFL but across all subjects at both Tile Hill wood School and at Chenderit School which was featured in an OFSTED MFL best practice report in 2013. At BGGS Year 10 students who have followed this method made significant gains in their learning throughout key stage 3 and this is also translating to improved progress at Key Stage 4.  Judith has been working with Aston University and Birmingham City Council to develop Learning through Languages UK ; a national centre for CLIL. She also is on the steering group of the newly formed CLIL Centre of Excellence in London.
