Mokapu peninsula has been home to military forces since the days when ancient Hawaiians inhabited the area hundreds of years ago. Today it cele- brates its 46th anniversary as home to Marines.

Aside from ancient Hawaiians, the peninsula was occupied by the U.S, Army from 1918 to the end of World War IL In 1939, the Navy took interest in the area and eventually acquired nearly all of the penimula to establish an advance naval base.

The first trace of Marines here came during, this time when a detachment of leathernecks was sent here under the command of Maj. J. C. Donehoo, Jr. The Marines' mission consisted of guarding construction materials and the area. By the end of 1941, most con- struction here was nearing completion and the base was a thriving, multi-mil- lion dollar installation.

On a dreary Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 1941, Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay was site of the first attack from a wave of Japanese planes which were part of the attack group which later bombed Pearl Harbor. The event thrust the United. States into World War H.

The base was utilized greatly during the war, but was decommissioned by

the Navy in 1949. The Marine Corps viewed the retired airfield as a good training site for air-ground teams. So it was that Col. Frank G. Daily took charge as the commanding officer of the Marine Corps Air Station this day 46 years ago.

Later that year, the Marine Aircraft Group-13 began arriving followed by the 1st Provisional Maine Brigade.

Many more Marine aircraft squadrons arrived thereafter, including the the fast-landing FJ-3 Fury jet air- craft, which prompted construction to lengthen the runways here in 1956 because of the extra roll-out needed for them.

The war in Vietnam brought continu-

al change to the base, and by 1971 1st Marine Brigade expanded to include Marine Aircraft Group-24, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines and 3d Marines. April 15, 1994, MCAS Kaneohe Bay

Self Help says cl\To' to late equipment returns

Sgt. William Poff Combat Corespondent

The base's Self Help shop nas begun suspending the privileges of customers who return bor- rowed items late.

With the policy, which began. Jan. 5, customers who return items late once will receive a warning. On the second violation, a 30-day suspension of privileges will be imposed.

"The suspension policy was conceived because we have approximately 60 customers right now who are late with our equipment," said John A. Trimble, the sign shop NCO with Self Help.

"If these individuals did not return their gear by the fifth of January, then they were auto-

Once the process is fully imple- mented, a delinquent users list will be forwarded to commands, Trimble said.

"Things are getting out-of-hand and we want to ensure we have the assets to support as many

customers as possi- ble," Trimble said. Self Help was recently established when Housing Self Help and Military Self Help were consolidated. Now, all assets are available to both housing' tenants and military units, accord- ing to Trimble. "We have more items available now and can

better support more customers," said Trimble. "Enforcing times for signed-out items makes the whole process more efficient."

A recent addition to the retreat program is the Singles Retreat. The first of these was held the weekend before Christmas and was met with a "very positive response," according to CREDO

LCpI Jason Mascari, of 1/12, attended the Singles and Personal Growth Retreats, and has high praise for the programs.

Kuwaiti desert sees Marine green SSgt. Rhys Evans

13th ME111500 Public Affairs

UDAIRI . RANGE, Kuwait - Using fire-

111111 power, speed and maneuver, the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) flexed its Marine Air/Ground Task Force muscles Dec. 20 in an all-out combined arms exercise in the Kuwaiti desert, 20 miles from the Iraqi border. More than 1,800

Marines and Sailors of the 13th MEU(SOC) par- ticipated in a CAX at the Udairi Training Range which capped off more than 24 days of training during Exercise Eager Mace 98-1.

"This exercise was a tremendous finish to some outstanding train- ing where we had a chance to build up our trust and confidence in all our supporting arms by working together in an area where we could exercise our coordina- tion and flexibility," said

Maj. Jim Gfrerer, the commanding officer of A Company, Battalion Landing Team 1/1, 13th MEU(SOC). Marines and Sailors of

the 13th MEU(SOC) were checking their gear, going over last minute details in the operations orders, load- ing ammunition and donning their war gear in preparation for a three-day desert warfare exercise. During the moonless night, when it was difficult to even see five feet in any direc-

tion, vehicles were being loaded for the early morning attack. Marines of B Co., 1st

Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, BLT 1/1 began the exercise as they crossed the line of departure and traveled more than 60 kilometers on a screening mission covering the southern flank for the main assault. With, a cold morning fog blanketing the desert floor, three assault elements of BLT 1/1 moved into their

assembly areas to con- duct last minute prepa- rations prior to crossing the line of departure.

The main assault kicked off as A Co., rein- forced with M1A1 tanks, amphibious assault vehicles, 81mm mortar platoon, Dragon anti- tank missiles and com- bat engineers, rolled toward their first objec- tive; a minefield barrier. Mounted to the rear of two AAVs, two line charges that pack 1,750 pounds of C-4 explosives were launched up to 100

meters into the mine- field. Shaking the desert floor like an earthquake, the line charges blasted two lanes 200 meters long and 15 meters. wide for the assault force. "Many of these

Marines are more confi- dent now with having live M-240G rounds walking their lead up a hill as they assault enemy held positions," said SSgt. Kevin D. Krotzer, a machinegun section leader with Weapons Platoon, A Co.

SSgt. Rhys Evans

New IRAs mean savings

Cpl. Steven Williams Combat Coarspandent

Two new IRAs were intro- duced with the new year, offer- ing tax free investment growth and several other incentives.

The Roth and Educational. IRAs were implemented Jan. 1

and have several new advan- tages not available with the original Deductible and Nondeductible IRAs, according to Geal Fukumoto, an invest- ment representative with Edward Jones investment firm in Kaneohe.

`The big advantage is the tax-free growth," Fukumoto said. "Nothing else does that.

"Advantages to the Roth IRA, according to information from Van Kempen American Capital, include:

Investors can make contri- butions to a Roth IRA if their income does not exceed $95,000 or $150,000 jointly.

Up to $2,00() in contribu- tions is non-deductible and can be made at any age, but are reduced by amounts con- tributed to Deductible or Non- deductible IRAs.

Penalties of 10 percent are

imposed on the investment groWth portion of early with-

, drawals on top of ordinary taxes, according to VKAC. Exceptions include, but aren't limited to, death, disability or, if the IRA was open fir five or more years, purchasing a first home by the investor or investor's family members.

Penalties of 10 percent may also be imposed on non- quali- fled withdrawals from Educational IRAs.

Educational IRAs are avail- able to people with adjusted gross incomes not exceeding $95.000 or $150,000 jointly. The IRAs can be opened l'or children under1.8 who are des- ignated beneficiaries of the acmunt. Advantages include:

Contributions are non- deductible up to $500 a year, per child, and are not counted toward annual Deductible or Roth IRA contributions.

Withdrawals for tuition, books, supplieS and room and board are tax free.

"I strongly recommend both IRAs," said Yukurnoto. "Investments like that are just too good to pass up."

As years go by, is our memory of Dr. King's dream the same?

SSgt. Stephen Gude Headquarters Battalion

As the nation celebrates the birthday of Dr Martin Luther King Jr., it is interesting to notice the backlash of discontent with reforms made during the 1960s, the height of the Civil Rights Movement of which King was the leader.

It seems a lot of people think King and his movement was all about creating "quotas" for minorities. About giving minorities cer- tain advantages whites don't have in busi- nesses. About making whites feel bad for the history of racial improprieties in this country.

You're all wrong. Listen to the man's speeches - sure, he wanted to redress the wrongs of a society in which blacks and other minorities were second-class citizens, but the main thing King stressed was, equality and fairness. What's wrong with that?

I've heard a lot of people with high levels of education speak on the problems of our

country and why it doesn't need laws for "quotas" in certain types of jobs or different admissions standards for people who are culturally different.

However, are these same people who are complaining thinking about why these laws and rules were created? Because frankly, it was much harder for a black person to achieve the same level of success as a white person when these rules were created. And since most of them came about because of the Civil Rights Movement, naturally, the movement gets blamed.

These same people argue it has been more than 30 years since the Civil Rights Act and America has changed for the better. Look at all the great minorities in sports and enter- tainment! Look at Michael Jordan! Look at Michael Jackson! Look at Oprah Winfrey!

Funny Winfrey has said on her televi- sion show even she, a woman who a couple of years ago made more than $100 million, still feels the stings of racism. She spoke of an incident in which she wasn't allowed in a department store, even though white

patrons were allowed hi before and after she arrived. Apparently, the store has a sys- tem where store clerks have to let patrons in through a locked door. Maybe it was an oversight. Maybe the

clerk didn't see her. Or maybe it was as Winfrey reported, and she doesn't strike me as the kind of person who goes around look- ing for racism.

King's striving for fairness for all was noble, but we've all heard the saying, "life isn't fair."

Well, that may be so, but are you?

Winter trees make Spring mulch LCpI. Barry Proctor

Combat Correspondent

MCB .Hawaii teamed-up with Hawaii's Christmas Treecycle pro- gram last week to recycle over 2,000 trees from. Kailua community homes.

The trees were collected at Kailua Elementary School, then brought to a site inside the back gate here to be ground into a mulch, said George Lingle, the solid waste manager at Base Environmental Department.

"This is our first year recycling trees for the program," said Lingle. "We have the mechanized grinding equipment and we volunteered to recycle the trees. This saves valu- able landfill space and we get to keep the mulch."

The mulch will be used on base for such things as fire management at the base range, to keep weeds out of landscaping, and spread along trails around Nu'upia ponds, Lingle said.

"Mulch is rather expensive, so this is saving us about $3,000 in expens- es," Lingle said. "And we're saving money for the landfills. Otherwise,

r -

Old Christmas trees undergo a metamorphosis into mulch, after being dropped into the Tornado tree-mulcher

the trees would just go there and take up space."

"Because the base took the trees for us, our program saved a lot of money, as well," said Traver Carroll, a coordinator for Treecylce. "We would have needed to rent grinding equipment, but the Marines already had the equipment. This kind of partnership benefits both sides."

The base was the biggest collection site on the island this year, Carroll said. The turnout was very impres- sive for a volunteer's first year.

"We hope this relationship with the Marine Corps here will spark more participation from other military branches in Hawaii," said Carroll. "The Marines helped make this a great year for Treecycle."

Third artillery live -fire ends in Japan 2ndLt. David Rom ley

MCB Camp S.D. Buffer

SENDAI, Japan -- Marines from Battery C, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, Headquarters Battery, 3rd Bn., 12th Marines and Combat Service Support Detachment 33 proved they are the king of battle Sunday after concluding a challenging, but successful, artillery exercise here. The Marines participated

in the third artillery-reloca- tion, live-fire exercise as part of the agreement reached by the Special Action Committee on Okinawa. This was the first time Marines have trained at the Ojojihara Maneuver Area, one of the fiVe sites off

Okinawa identified for artillery live-fire training.

Each new site brings its own unique challenges to the Marine. One of these challenges at Ojojihara was the size of the impact area.

During a visit Nov. 20, Brig. Gen. Jerry Humble, the commanding general, 3rd Marine Division, described the impact area as a postage stamp, indicating the area was extraordinari- ly small for a training range. The proficiency of the Marines was the prima- ry factor in completing a successful evolution there. In addition to eight days of

firing in sometimes terrible weather conditions, Marines did much more during their stay here. In

appreciation for the support received from the local com- munity, Marines visited the Asaina Gakuen Rehabilitation facility Nov. 22 to help its residents dec- orate for the upcoming holi- day season.

"This is just one way we can show our thanks to the local community for having us here," said Maj. Joe Shrader, the training offi- cer for 3/12. Many local residents invit-

ed the Marines into their homes as a way to convey their appreciation.

"It was fantastic. There were 25 family members there to greet us. Their hos- pitality was overwhelming," said lstLt. Sean. Charney, the executive officer for C

Battery, 1/12, based at MCB Hawaii, returning from one family's home.

The Marines had many other opportunities to learn about the Japanese culture and particularly their Japanese Ground Self Defense Force counterparts. A party was held for the Marines and Japanese sol- diers by 50 local' community supporters at the conclusion of training. The Marines managed to breech language barriers between their peers and local residents.

"I guess being familiar with the military helps us under- stand each other," said Cpl. Richard Arellanez, of Btry. C, 1/12, "and I think under- standing is a big part of what this is all about."

SACRED FALLS 7-

. Communications ".' Marines from

Platoon, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines used the beauty of the falls here as a backdrop for training classes Thursday.

After training, the unit con- ducted a clean-up along the two- mile trail leading from the park entrance to Sacred Falls, lend- ing park officials a hand in keeping the area clean.

"This is the first time we've ever done something like this," said Sgt. Joseph Rocha, the com- munications platoon sergeant. "Every Thursday is set aside as battalion training day and we normally sit in classrooms back on base. We just wanted to change the pace for a day and help the community by clean- ing up here."

The trip here enabled the devil dogs to see a popu- lar tourist site on the island and conduct classes on leadership and sur- vival in the field, Rocha said.

"When we usually take trips like this, we go to Bellows and Schofield Barracks," said Sgt. Jamie Alvarez, a communica- tions platoon cleanup volunteer. "When I heard we were going to Sacred Falls I was surprised. It's definitely a different train- ing environment up here. It feels more like a field trip."

After the Marines finished the classes and policed the area, they enjoyed a picnic in the grass, a game of football and a swim in the ocean at a beach across Kamehameha Highway near the entrance to Sacred Falls Park.

"We want to try to do more of this in the future," said Rocha. "Our operations schedule has picked up this year and we don't have any trips such as this one scheduled, but we would like to do this more often."

with eight minutes to go in the first half. But with 2:45 on the clock, the Mustangs took the

lead, 17-15. The first half ended with the Mustangs ahead, 20- 17. "I told them to pick up the intensity," said Mustang coach Rick Baughman, "and that's what they did and they maintained it." The second half of the game saw the Mustangs hold their lead. Rebounding was the key to CSSG's success. "We gotta get the rebounds," said Warrior

coach Robert Casta-neda of his team. "They are giving too many second chances for the other team to score."

But the Mustangs kept pulling away and sealed the game with a couple of late buckets. The second game was fast-paced

and furious as players from both teams tore up and down the court in a near frenzy, with play- ers colliding under the net fight- ing to get the rebounds. Fouls hurt the Bulldogs early as coach George Griffin locked horns with the referees throughout the game.

Still, 3/3 struggled to keep the Bulldogs from tak- ing the lead but were unsuccessful. The Bulldogs made their move after half- time, taking full advantage of 3/3's inexperi- ence, ensuring the victory.

"We didn't work the ball around," said 3/3 coach Anthony Camacho. "This is our first time play- ing together."

Musings from the mainland

fter a three-week trip back to the mainland, have returned freshly invigorated and even

more broke than when I left. I made it a point, however, to at

least pay attention to some of the things going on around me, in order to give you island-locked readers an idea of whether or not home has changed. That question can be answered

quite simply -- yes. I noticed several things I had to get: used to, such as:

Everybody drives fast. When I lived on the mainland, I drove rather quickly myself. But here, my wife and I bought a car suit- ed for cruising, and somehow, the languid pace of life here evapo- rated my "speed" genes. Or, as my wife said, perhaps I'm getting old. It didn't take long for those genes to return, however. Still, was getting passed by everyone. A completely new experience.

LinC01/1 Maw Cars rule the mad. I never noticed, before, but when my family and I took a trip to my parents' borne in Atlanta, it seemed as though one out of every 10 cars on the road was a ToWn Car, especially 1980s -vin- tage. My dad had a gorgeous powder blue 1973 rIbwn. Car, which. I backed into a tree (don't ask, don't tell), and I know from experience they're as quiet as an isolation chamber and have seats that make you :just want to curl. up and go to sleep. In other words, Lincolns are awesome to cruise in.

We are not hearing all the good 7111.1Sie. If you like rhythm and blues, we on this side of the island, without access to BET and The Box, are not hearing any of the truly worthy songs the Hawaii pop stations play either when they are old Or not at all. I was quite surpi.i.sed at all the good stuff out now. I:lopefully. BET will kick off over here today on the local cable system with no problem, so the situation should- n't be too had anymore.

Football is supposed to come on television at .1 and 4 p.m., like God intended it to be. Those are east coast times, where it makes perfect sense -- most church ser- vices let out around 1 p.m., so you go borne, watch an east coast. and west coast game, eat dinner and go to sleep for back to church, if you like night ser- vices). It never felt right, when I was on the west coast and here, to watch pro football so early in the morning.

Forty degrees is freezing. Coming from Hawaii, don't let anyone tell you 40 degrees isn't cold. My family laughed. at me while my teeth were chattering in Atlanta, and there were other people walking around in short sleeves. And ladies, I'll never understand skirts in cold weath- e. One lady told me ",Stockings keep you warm," but I'll never find out first-hand, if you know what I mean.

'Rome" always changes. Have you noticed every time you go home, it's different? I've been away from home for 15 years now, and while I remain close to my family, feel like an outsider at times. Catching up is hard to do in the limited amount of time I have to spend with them. Everyone likes to conic around to see you, but they can't always take vaca- tions or days off when you're there. In other words, life goes on. While I'm here, I'll always pine for home, but when I gel: there, it's never what, I think it's going to be. Except Popeye's chicken, because some things never

change. Thank God for that..

Ode to Iced Tea LCpI. Barry Proctor

Headquarters Saltation

e other night, my wife and I scheduled an atappointment

sales- woman to come to our home and show us some policies,

When she arrived, I was sitting around sipping sweet iced tea from a huge mug solely dedicated to housing my large amounts of tea. Being the gracious southern host I am, I offered her a glass of sweet tea. She declined. This surprised me because most people like good sweet tea. Then I thought, maybe she had an experience like T had at other peoples' houses.

The first time I visited a house up North is when I went with. my wife to New Jersey before we were mar- ried. We sat down to dinner and when her mom asked me what I wanted to drink, what did I ask for?

The drink she brought me was a wolf in sheep's clothing. What looked like sweet tea wasn't at all. It was this apricot-flaVored Nestea junk. I drank it because I didn't want to be picky and offend them, but I didn't like it.

After that run -in, I drink other's tea with caution.

Let me remind you I am from the South and my love for sweet tea runs a close to my love for barbeque chicken and hot boiled peanuts. Actually, that sounds like a really good meal - hot boiled peanuts, barbeque chicken and sweet tea.

Apparently my definition of sweet iced tea is different than the next per- son'S.

-sweet iced tea. (swet ist te) n A le.alY substance in a small Pouch made by Lipton which is boiled in water, poured into a large receptacle with sugar, stirred, then placed in a large drinking glass with ice.

Simply put -tea leaves mixed with sugar, water and ice, thus making it SWEET ICED TEA. Nowhere in the definition do you

see Crystal Light, powdery sub- stance or fruit flavoring.

The only fruit tea should be fla- vored with is a lemon. I don't prefer a lemon, but to each his own. Not apricot, cranberry, orange or any other fruit. Maybe a lime, but never guava or anything of that nature.

Other rUles.for good tea: * Ma was never intended to be

served in a can. Canned tea is not brisk. It's sad and should be dis- carded.

* Tha should never be without sugar. Ma. without sugar shoUld be discarded. Those dreaded words "All we have is unsweet- ened tea" make me ball into a corner in the fetal position. Tea Without sugar is like Jimmy Carter without toothpaste. Unsweetened tea is mainly found

in restaraunts in the Northeast. You go in and order a sweet tea, and they always say, "M we have is unsweetened." This poses a prob- lem. Sugar never dissolves in your glass. Itjust falls to the bottom and makes it look like you have sand in the bottom of your glass.

I feel a good restaurant should offer you a choice between sweet and unsweet. Most restaurants in the South do; why not up North?

The is an American institution and should be served and consumed. properly. Whether served hot or on ice,

it should never come in a can and never be soluble in water like Kodaid or similar drinks.

What would the Sons-of Liberty think about the tea of today? I can't visualize thousands of people at the Boston Tea. .Party ripping open pack- ets of Nestea or Crystal Light, and dumping them in the harbor It just wouldn't happen.

Our country was founded on tea and tea should be treated with respect. Drink it hot in a mug or cold on the rocks. That's the only way or forefathers intended it to be.

Just when you think it can not get any worse...

Sgt. William Poff Combat Correspondent

ith 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines is starting to put the new 7-month Unit

Deployment Program through it's paces, some might start to think "It can't get any worse."

Well, consider traveling back 24 years and looking through the eyes of Darrell W. Poland, a master sergeant here. He is easy to recog- nize - his dress uniform has "fruit salad that costs more than the shirt:" Poland entered the Marine Corps

June 1974 and pursued a $2,600 bonus to enlist in the combat arms side of the house. After boot camp in San Diego, "90 percent of those who entered under the bonus became infantry" Poland admitted with a weathered smile.

"My first two years were contin- gency operations, one right after the other, with 1st Battalion, 4th Marines as the war in Vietnam was winding down," said Poland. "In '74 and '75 I was involved in four con- tingencies including Fortress Journey, Eagle Pull, Frequent Wind and the SS Mayaguez recovery operation. Our Marine Amphibious Unit commander was then Col. Al Gray, who Marines recognize as one of our former commandants."

Poland's first two years rival any- thing a Marine could expect on sea duty. He was not limited to just one ship during this period, but five - the USS Duluth, Okinawa, Mount Vernon, Dubuque and the Blue Ridge.

"Over the two years combined, we evacuated approximately 60,000 refugees to be processed in the Phillipines and ultimately sent to Camp Pendleton," said the 6-foot, 2- inch Orange, Texas native.

"Several of the operations were pretty hot and we were shelled by

mortars and rockets a couple of times," Poland said. "Being a non- assault contingency force, standing orders for the day were not to fire even when being fired on."

Frequent Wind, the evacuation of Saigon, was the last official military operation of the Vietnam War, according to Poland.

Out of the evacuations and trips to the Phillipines, Poland met his wife, Gloria, in June 1975.

Poland went back to Camp Hansen, Okinawa in September 1976 and after a month on island, reported to 2nd Battalion. Shortly after, 2/4 went back to the Phillipines to support the same refugee operations he was in before, then went on to evacuate the American Embassy in Thailand.

"In January 1977, orders brought me to Hawaii and the 1st Amphibious Brigade," said Poland. "By October, we were on the first WestPac out of here."

From 1978-79, he did a short stint as Primary Marksmanship Instructor at the range here, where he still holds a qualification record and is now SNCOIC. He shot his first competition in the 1979 Pacific Division Matches.

A new decade brought a new unit - 3/3 and after that, recruiting. "I did three years in recruiting and

what is ironic I received more unit awards out there than doing contin- gency operations," said Poland, who signed 99 contracts in two years and made gunnery sergeant merito- riously. "I received five unit awards."

Poland did two more deployments as a platoon sergeant with 1/3 here.

"We were in Southwest Asia for nine months in '90 and '91," Poland said. "We were in the battle of Khafji and we were the only helo- borne assault unit into Kuwait as Task Force X-Ray. We were a block- ing force in the oil fields. We

stopped several tanks there. "One tank we suppressed using .50

caliber machineguns and Mk-19s," Poland added. "We were 'lessons learned' for today's Combined Anti- Armor Teams."

Outside Kuwait City, Poland saw one of his sons for the first time during the war. "Richard was a lance corporal with 1st Battalion, 1st Marines at the time," he said, "and having both a father and son in a combat zone worried Gloria. We were very relieved to see each other." Poland has been the senior enlist-

ed Marine at Range Training Facility here since October 1.996. He has won a silver shooting medal and coached the rifle team to victory and a new record during the '97 PACDIVs. Shooting medals now weigh heavy on an already over- taxed left side of his uniform. Poland will retire this October to

his house in Kaneohe and pursue his hobbies of hunting, shooting and spearfishing, filling his dive-bag with fish and lobster.

Movie Review

Titanic Sgt. Michael Wiener

Combat Correspondent

!'11 be honest and say when I bought the tickets for Titanic, I thought I was in for another

chick-flick. True, the actual plot of the story is a sappy love tale of two young lovers, however, James Cameron does such an amazing job directing with special effects and realism the movie is a must-see for all.

The movie begins in present day, with actual footage of the Titanic underwater. Brock Lovett, played by Bill Paxton, is leading an expedition in search of the "Heart of the Ocean", a 56-carat diamond lost in the Titanic's sinking. Although unable to find the jewel, he finds an amazing sketch of a young woman wearing it. By coincidence, the young woman, Rose DeWitt Bukater now 101, and played by Gloria Stuart, sees th pic- ture on a news broadcast and offers to tell Lovett the true tale of Titanic. From this point, the film jumps back to the past.

Rose, played by Kate Winslett, is a rich girl who is going to marry Cal Hockley because of his money. She is tormented by the thought of mar- rying Cal, and decides she wants to deboard Titanic in the middle of the freezing Atlantic.

Enter Jack Dawson, a poor American artist played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who wins a ticket for Titanic's maiden voyage in a poker

game. Jack convinces Rose going for a lath-night swim to her death is not the answer, then saves her as she slips and nearly falls anyway.

Sparks fly and the chemistry between the two is instant. The story moves along and Cal is con- stantly trying to keep Kate away from Jack. The pace of the movie is quick, and although we all know the Titanic sank, I kept wondering how the Jack and Rose story would turn out, or if it would turn out. I didn't care if Cal made it off the ship, but I admit, I was pulling for Jack.

Kate Winslett steals the show as far as acting goes, and I'm not just saying that because Pm secretly jeal- ous of DiCaprio. She clearly has a broader range of emotion and should be a shoo-in for an Oscar. The visual effects in the movie were

astounding. There were many times throughout the movie I thought to myself, "How in the world did they pull that off?"

Aside from the lovey-dovey plot of the movie, Cameron does a wonder- ful job depicting what actually hap- pened on the Titanic. It's a good les- son in history as well as a great movie.

So, for all you women who are madly in love with DiCaprio or any good love story, grab your man and take him to the theaters. And guys, don't worry, this movie has violence in the form of punches, guns, explo- sions and dead people - 1,523 to be exact.

Safety guidelines should be followed by local, military surfers

LCpI. Barry Proctor Combat Correspondent

From Waimea Bay to Waikiki, Marines here have the chance

to take advantage of the world's best surf

However, surfing here can be accompanied by very dangerous and life- threatening conditions.. lb prevent injury and possibly death there are some guidelines surfers should follow before waxing up and paddling out.

"Never surf alone," said Jonathan Knauth, a pha- tographer at Training Audio Visual Support Center here and avid surfer. "You should always surf with buddies and lbe

accountable for each other." A way to safeguard from

a possible head injury and suffering unconsciousness while in the water is to wear a surfing helmet, Knauth said. Many surfers get struck in the head when they surf.

"I took four stitches in my head for a surfing injury and that's why I started wearing the helmet," said Huy Phun, a videographer at TAVSC.

Other ways to surf safely include surfing in two or three hour sessions to keep from becoming overly fatigued while in the water, Knauth said.

"No matter how experi- enced a surfer you are, your life is at risk each

Digital photo by LCal. Barry Proctor

Even though lifeguards watch over most beaches here, surfers and bodyboarders should always be conscious of high surf warnings and put safety first.

time you enter the water," Knauth said.

Knauth and others were involved in rescuing Michael J. Klienscheck, the pool and beach manag- er for MWR here. Kleinscheck apparently hit his head on his board and

was knocked unconscious and nearly drowned Jan. 3 while surfing at North Beach.

"It just goes to show even the most experienced swim- mers can be at danger in the water here." Kleinscheck.

Hash House Harriers make running fun

Sgt. Michael Wiener Combat Correspondent

ALOARANCH - In 1938, a British officer stationed in

alaysia found a way to exer- cise his troops and still have a good time.

'May, more than 2,000 Hash House Harrier clubs around the world carry on the tradition, including the Aloha Hash House Harriers here.

"The whole idea behind the Hashes is to meet new friends and to have a good time," said Erika Eberhart, a Hasher with AHEM also known as "Red Hot." "We get together every weekend for a Hash and on special ocasions like a full moon or Friday the 13th."

"We're not just for serious runners, in fact, if you're for a serious run, the HEE is not for you," said Lee Greenwood, a Hasher known as "Famous Amos."

Meeting at different locales each Hash, two Hashers called Hares, grab a bag of flour and red tape and head

out on a trail, marking it as they go. After 15 minutes, the other Hashers set out in search of the Hares, hoping to catch them before they make it to the end of the trail.

"If the Hares are caught, they suffer public humiliation, but it's all in fun and nobody's feelings get hurt," Eberhart said.

At the end of the trail, food and bev- erage of choice and a great party await all Hashers, according to Brad Davis, a Hasher known as "Knocked Up."

"Once we get to the end, the real fun begins," Davis said. "We just relax, hang out, enjoy each other's company and party." The AHELH, as in all HIM clubs,

has rules, terms and names uncom- mon to the "real world." Pointing with fingers, wearing race t-shirts and even saying race or run is punishable by "down-downs."

"A down-down is chugging your favorite beverage, whether it be soda, water, beer or whatever, until your drinking vessel is empty" Davis said.

When a Hasher enters a club, he or she is a "virgin." But after the sixth Hash, his or her mortal name will be shed for a new, improved Hash name.

"All the Hashers will pay close atten- tion to you during your first six Hashes. After your fifth Hash, you'll get to tell everyone a little bit about yourself, and after the sixth Hash, a committee will meet to decide your Hash name," Eberhart said.

Hashers also provide support and refreshments for fellow Hashers com- peting in races. Some may argue the HRH is a good way to get out and get exercise, but the greatest benefit is the people you meet, said Eberhart.

"There are Hash clubs all over," Eberhart said, "It's a perfect way to meet new friends, especially for people who move around a lot."

The first weekend of every month, AHEM hold a family Hash for Hashers with baby joggers or slower family members. The only cost of Hashing is a $5 donation for the food and bevarges provided afterward. For more informa- tion about the AHEM call 948-HASH.

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS - Try this on for size: what's 13 plus two?

It's 16, if you believe scorekeepers dur- ing Monday's Hawaii Armed Service Athletic Council basketball playoff game between the combined Army team and K-Bay Marines, a 96-88 loss for the leathernecks. This and other strange math gave an intriguing aura to a contest which, to most observers in the stands, was weird. The weirdness began early, as the

Army, leaping to a 13-4 lead, surprised the Marines by pressuring the ball of made shots. Generally, the leather- necks handled it well, with only one ten second call during the game, but it obvi-

ously threw off the offensive flow.

The Army's plan kept the ball out of the hands of guards Walter Moore and John Nichols early, and the Marines struggled to find a rhythm to their offense. Brian Markowitz and Jimmy Wheeler brought the ball up, but didn't get the ball to the right people.

And with these two big guys on the outside, rebounds were going to the Army, which seemed to have three play- ers going for every board and loose ball.

'What we wanted to do early was get inside and establish our presence there," said Darrell Henson, the Marine head coach. "Once our inside game was established, it would have opened up our outside game."

But the style of play which saw the Marines win nine straight games before this one just wasn't there, and it mysti-

fled the leathernecks. Besides the scorekeeping, the Marines

had to worry about the Army's long-dis- tance sharpshooting. They drained three-pointers throughout the night, and the Marines' normally proficient outside shooting couldn't catch up.

But it was the shenanigans with the scorekeepers which bothered Henson the most.

"It's things like that which distract from the game and interrupt the flow,"

he said. 'We'd get on a run and some- thing funny would happen, whether with the refs or with the scorekeepers not keeping the correct count on fouls.

"But hey," Henson continued, "we're just going to have to suck it up and play. We're in the loser's bracket now, but it's still a way to get to the champi- onship."

Virgin' 'as r tells of I- arrier initiation

Sgt. Michael Wiener Corn6or CorreToodent

My experience as a "vir- gin" Hasher actually began the night before

my first Hash. I met a few vet; eran Hashers at the Kickstand Cafe in Honolulu.

The first thing I noticed about this breed of people was their overwhelming friendliness. I felt like I had known them for years.

Feeling a little nervous about what was to happen, I decided to use my inquisitive journalis- tic mind and get a few pointers.

"Don't wear new shoes." This was repeated to me sev-

eral times. Apparently, had I worn new shoes, I. would have been drinking out of them. As the night went on, I felt

more and more at home, I was even comfortable enough to sing karaoke - several times. I know I have a voice compara- ble to the likes of Sinatra and Bing Crosby, but I don't like to show off. Yeah right. In reali- ty, I was happy everybody knew the lyrics and carried me.

Closing time came, and we all went our separate ways, but I was already looking forward to my first Hash. ' .

I showed up the next day at the Hash site - in old shoes of course, and searched for a famil- iar face. I found one, and "Red Hot" was soon introducing me to the other Hashers.

'Toe Jam', this is my friend, `virgin Michael'." Because I was a first-time Hasher, I was 'vir- gin Michael' - a title I wasn't sure how to feel about. I won't be graced with my Hash. name until my sixth Hash.

"Famous Amos" explained the rules behind Hashing to me and the other three "virgins"

and the Hares left to mark their trail.

After their 15-minute head- start, I, along with iny Hash- guide "Red Hot", started off in search of them. At; first, there was confusion among the pur, suers, but eventually we picked up on the trail.

As we ran along, I was intro- duced to more flashers.

"'Discharge', this is my friend Michael. He's a virgin." By now, I was okay with the term "virgin," and we kept running along. Apparently, not every- body knows who Hashers are, because as-we ran through neighborhoods, blowing Whi8- ties and yelling "on-on," peo- ple looked at us like-we were crazy.

I didn't mind. I was having a great time. No sooner did I pick up on the strange mark- ings left by front-running Hashers, than the Hash ended. The Hares made it to the end of the trail without being caught.

But then the real party began. The five bucks I had paid to try this thing out had turned into all the snack food and beverages could consume. I participated. in rituals I had never seen before, including "down-downs" and singing strange songs.

I took a little flak for being both a jarhead. and a reporter, but like the night before, Hashers young and old talked to me. T. felt right at home.

When the Hash closed with the singing of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," I was sad to say I had to go. It was as if I was leaving -

a group of old friends, even though I had only known them a few hours and some were quite odd.

Then again, maybe that's why I felt at home,

T here are two kinds of luaus in Hawaii: those you pay to

attend and those you work for. SSgt. Matt Hevezi

MarforPec PAO

At a real luau - the common, non -

commercialized backyard version celebrated by most native island

families - there is meaning and pur- pose.

It is a family event and culinary cele- bration. Hula skirts, mai tais and fire dancers are often swapped for cold beer, good company and exquisite local dishes.

Creating luau, however, is not am easy task. There is plenty of work to be done.

A typical family-style luau begins a full day prior to the feast. Banana-tree stalks and ti leaves must be gathered by hand. It helps to have a family friend with private land overgrown with these two vital luau building blocks. If not, luau builders must venture into siome of Oahu's most isolated public landsicapes to locate and harvest these important ingredients unavailable in any grocery store.

Simmering below the pig, the flattened banana stalks produce a unique flavor

and steam while the ti leaves serve a similar purpose from above. Both are cut and prepared in sequence prior to pit, or as Hawaiians call it "imu," con- struction. The savvy luau host almost always

invites friends and family members to help with the luau preparation. This is considered an honor in most neighbor- hoods and sometimes signifies a degree of social ranking dependent on the degree of difficulty given to each helper's task. The tougher the assignment - like shaving lip-hair from the inside of the pig's mouth -the more prestigious the position among friends and family members.

This may be just the incentive needed for the young to learn the art of luau.

Once the imu is readied for lighting, the day is done. On luau day, an hour before sunrise, the imu is lit. A pipe inserted in the center is the funnel for the lighter fluid. The flooring of the imu is covered with crumpled newspaper and then stacked with alternating layers of porous river rock and mesquite-like wood called, "keawe." Imus built in this manner can

reach inner-core temperatures of 2,000 degrees or more; hot enough to melt a tin can like butter.

Once the imu is lit, it's time to pick up the pig from the butcher. Most pigs weigh between 100-200 pounds depending on expected luau attendance. It's not uncom- mon to toss in a whole turkey, fish, or other ti-leaf-wrapped meat items for the coming earthen steam bath.

The white-hotiver rocks are plucked from the pit and carefully tucked into the pig's cleaned-out body cavity to insure thorough and even cooking. Once loaded with these flaming rocks, the pig is tied up with wire and lowered into the imu -

which is then sealed with layers of ti leaves, wet gunny sacks, a dampened tarp and finally dirt.

After five to seven hours of steaming in the earthen oven, the pig is ready for removal and the luau's main dish is ready.

There is still much preparation to be completed before eating. Traditional luau side-dishes are prepared, and the pig meat has to be separated from bone and excess fat. Besides the central theme dish of kalua pig, other luau dishes include poi, lomi-lomi salmon, ahi sashimi, sweet potatoes, seaweed salad, pipi kalua, chick- en longrice, and many other local tastes.

If you are ever honored with an invita- tion to help build a luau, consider your- self lucky and jump at the chance to pitch in.
