1.2. BRIEF HISTORY OF UGANDA

POLITICAL REGIME: Republic StateHEAD OF STATE: H.E Gen. PresidentYoweri Kaguta Museveni.CAPITAL: KampalaOrganisation OF THE STATE: Uganda operates under a decentralized local government system with the local government unit being district.

The district is composed of units that rank from county, sub-county, parish to Village/LC 1.OFFICIAL LANGUAGE: English and SwahiliNATIONAL HOLIDAY: 9th October Independence DayCURRENCY: Uganda ShillingsPOPULATION: 37,828,742 (2014 estimate)

UGANDA INSTITUTIONSThere are 3 major institutions namely: The Executive, Parliament and the Judiciary. The Executive is headed by the President who is both the Head of State and Government. The President appoints the Vice President and the Prime Minister, who work hand-in-hand with him.The State House t: +256 41 231900, w: www.statehouse.go.ug, e: [email protected] parliament is headed by the Speaker. Currently the Parliament of Uganda has 332 members. Parliament of the Republic of Uganda, 16-18 Parliament Avenue, t: 0414377000/150

The History of Uganda is divided into 2 periods: Pre and Post Independence. Uganda’s population is composed of several ethnic groups (Bantu, Nilotics, and Nilo hamites). In the old days, leadership was in the hands of hereditary Kings. In the 1830s Arab traders and Europeans moved into Uganda with various interests. After World War 2, veterans and patriots from all corners of the country convened a rally with the objective of attaining independence. In 1962 Uganda gained Independence from the British after the alliance between Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and Kabaka Yekka (KY). The Buganda Kabaka (King) Edward Muteesa II was elected as a ceremonial president.

In I966, UPC dominated parliament and Milton Obote was elected the executive President. Uganda was then declared a republican state. After a military coup in 1971, Obote was overthrown by Idi Amin. Amin ruled Uganda with the military for the next eight years. Amin’s reign was ended after the Uganda-Tanzania War in 1979 in which Tanzanian forces aided by Ugandan exiles invaded Uganda. This led to the return of Obote, who was deposed in 1985 by General Tito Okello. Okello ruled for six months until he was deposed by the National Resistance Army (NRA) operating under the leadership of the current President, H.E Gen. Yoweri Museveni.

2.2. INSURANCEWHAT INSURANCE IS LEGALLY REQUIRED IN UGANDA?• Motor Third Party Insurance (MTP)• Workers Compensation Insurance (WC)

CAR INSURANCEMotor Third Party Insurance (MTP) compensates and protects road users who may be injured or killed by a vehicle.

As a statutory insurance, the limits are set by Law and the compensation amounts are pre-set. According to the current rates (August 2013), the maximum amount of compensation you will get as an accident victim is UGX 1,000,000 with an aggregate per accident of UGX 10,000,000 from this insurance. In Uganda, it is illegal for you to operate a vehicle (including motorbikes) without the minimum, the statutory third party cover.

This does not mean that the liability is only worth UGX 1,000,000-this is just the maximum amount the insurance company will contribute towards your compensation for the accident.

You can increase the upper limit of your third party insurance, see your broker.

Third Party Fire and Theft (TPFT) includes the basic MTP cover and also covers loss or damage to the vehicle if it is (i) damaged by fire, lightning or explosion, (ii) damaged either during an attempted theft or while it is stolen, and (iii) if it is stolen but not recovered. Comprehensive is the widest motor insurance cover you can have as it covers: fire to the vehicle, accidents/damage to the vehicle, motor third party (bodily injury and property damage) as well as statutory obligations. Its premiums are much higher than the other two covers.

Third Party Fire and Theft cover; comprehensive cover will also cover your car against accidental damage(for example hitting a tree while you drive) as well as the car’s accessories and replacement of spare parts. If you would like to enjoy extra benefits like the Personal Accident, Political Violence Terrorism and Sabotage extensions, additional premium will be charged.

ADMINISTRATION

Strict hygiene control is being followed in-store. Disinfectant spray bottles or wipes are placed at entrances for use

on hands, trolley and basket handles. All till points havedisinfectant spray bottles and are sanitized regularly.

WORKERS COMPESATION /EMPLOYEE LIABILITY

Workers Compensation (WC) is a compulsory insurance that is applicable to all employees in Uganda (whether formally or informally employed) who might be accidentally injured, die or acquire an occupational disease during the course of their employment. In the case of bodily injuries, this cover will only apply if the employee is on their way directly to work, at work or on their way directly home after work. In a domestic setting, WC would cover domestic staff who might suffer accidental work related bodily injuries.

The option to upgrade to the Group Personal Accident (GPA) cover which offers the employee more protection is also available. The GPA includes WC and covers the employee worldwide for 24 hours/7 days a week and therefore does not limit the benefit to the limitations mentioned in WC.

GPA can also be extended to Group Life making it possible for the Insured to be compensated in respect of claims logged due to natural death.

DOMESTIC INSURANCE

A Domestic package provides the widest cover required for a home, its content, owners, legal liability and domestic staff. Through its various sections, it will cover fire to the building, contents of the household (that do not leave the premises), personal effects which are portable, for example a mobile phone, workers compensation and legal liability to the occupants (either the landlord or the tenants).

PRIVATE PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE

Public Liability insurance covers the legal liabilities against the insured person or corporate body arising from the public. Examples of businesses which can consider taking this cover are hospitals, hotels, supermarkets, stadiums, schools and hotels.

In taking this policy, you will be required to give estimated amounts which the insurance company will pay in the event of a claim or loss. These amounts are commonly referred to as Limits of liability. You can estimate the maximum limit of liability on one event and maximum limit of liability in aggregate (total claims payable per year).

HEALTH INSURANCE

You can either get medical insurance from a Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO)-which will, more often than not, limit access to medical to that particular HMO or their branch network-or from an Insurance Company which provides medical insurance and a much wider range of health facilities that you can visit for treatment. Medical insurance covers, in part, out-patient, in-patient and extensions such as dental, optical, maternity and emergency evacuation by road or air ambulance. The detail will depend on your particular needs.

TRAVEL INSURANCEBRITAM Insurance provides cover for travelers going beyond the Ugandan borders to countries all over the world. BRITAM works along with Travel Insurance Consultants who are the underwriting managers and Europe assistance which has global representation, these do the payment of medical bills abroad, emergency evacuation and repatriation, in hospital monitoring, emergency information and assistance, return of mortal remains and legal assistance. www.britam.com / uganda Tel: 04177702600 / 0312 702600

LIFE INSURANCE

Life insurance is a contract between an insurance policy holder and an insurer, where the insurer promises to pay a designated beneficiary a sum of money (the “benefits”) upon the death of the insured person. Depending on the contract, other events such as terminal illness or critical illness may also trigger payment.

Major categorizations of life-based contracts include:

1. Protection policies which are designed to provide a benefit in the event of specified event. Typically this would be a lump sum payment. A common form of this design is term insurance.

2. Investment policies are designed to facilitate the growth of capital by regular or single premiums.

3.3. RENTINGTo rent there is always an agreement drawn up between the landlord (usually the owner of the building being rented out) and a tenant, relating to occupying the building, subject to payment of rent. If you rent a property ‘furnished’, it usually has furniture, crockery but does not normally include sheets, etc. Sign an inventory as this will help you in the event of dispute. If you rent ‘unfurnished’, you should be aware that the majority of decent apartments include kitchen appliances but curtain rails, carpets and lighting appliances are not usually included. After identifying the property and inspecting it to ensure that it meets your desired standards;you are advised, as a first time resident, to preferably engage the services of a lawyer. The landlord will be expected to provide you with a copy of the title deed and identification documents. The first time resident should provide; A copy of his/her passport, photographs and both parties (landlord/lessee) will be required to sign a copy of the tenancy agreement.

Payable by the TenantPrivate consumption of water, gas, electricity. Plus communal management charges in flats.

Payable by the LandlordRepair of buildings, Fire insurance, purchase of communal materials, maintenance and repair of tanks, tiles, and electrical installations.

Tenants’ DepositTenants usually pay a deposit which is refunded at the end of the tenancy, less any costs of damage agreed between the two parties.

3.4. PURCHASEUgandan law stipulates that a foreigner cannot buy land but can only get a lease. However the same law allows you to buy land in the name of a company. After locating and identifying the desired property, you are advised;1. To find a recommended lawyer2. To ensure that you get a copy of the title

and have it verified at the Ministry of Lands to ensure that the title is genuine.

3. After confirmation that the title is genuine, when ready to pay for the property, have a lawyer draft a sales agreement for the property which should be signed by both parties i.e. the seller and buyer plus witnesses and a lawyer subsequent to which payment is finalized.

4. Proceed and register the title deed in your names.

Purchase is carried out in 3 stages: the signature of a provisional sales agreement (key document that shows evidence of purchase),followed by issue of transfer forms (documents used to indicate evidence of property transfer) and the title deed (legal document that shows evidence of ownership of a property). Also required during purchase is a copy of the vendor’s/buyer’s identification documents, along with 2 passport photographs of the vendor/buyer.

Byline: Ayushi Ramaiya

Are We IgnoringANXIETY AND DEPRESSIONIN KIDS ???

Ayushi Ramaiya sits with child psychologist Letisia Murungyi in Kampala to discuss how parents can identify the signs of anxiety

and depression in kids and take a step forward without feeling ashamed or fearful about the future of their children.

Reflecting on our attitude Murungyi works with schools and one of her major roles is to be a liaison between teachers, parents, and children. She expresses her concern. When I notice certain atypical behaviors in children such as being tearful all the time, isolating themselves or being rebellious in the school setting, it is easier to assume the child is being bad mannered, lacks good discipline or is overly pampered. Sometimes, it is easier to hope that “the child will just get over it”.Parents also find themselves perplexed and may not quickly realise or acknowledge that the symptoms they are seeing are indicative of an underlying mental health concern.

Signs of anxiety and depression start developing from 3 years and may become more frequently evident in the 9 to 12 year age range. This is the age when children spend the most time at their school and a sensitive period, in which the problem is

either acknowledged or ignored. There is definitely a need for more consistent open communication between parents and teachers as well as teachers and students outside academic related conversations and more so between parents at home and with their children too.

Anxiety and Depression develop from the most unexpected placesAccording to Murungyi, the change of environment that a child was not adequately given time to process and prepare for can affect a child triggering mental health challenges in some. Other reasons include• Traumatic experiences such as seeing a parent fade

away• Separation of parents where often, children think they

may be part of the a cause of it• Phobias, which are often towards things and situations

that are considered normal for others like certain animals, experiences, objects

• Physical or emotional abuse by parents, children, or anyone in their environment

• The stress of coping up at school, home, or with siblings• Feeling neglected or rejected • Family history • Imbalance in hormones and neurotransmitters

How can you help at this stage as parents? Murungyi prompts that in addition to reaching out for help from psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, friends, or anyone else, keep talking to your children. Acknowledge their feelings and empathize with them. She says, “Think of the moment when you went through one of these problems and how helpless you must have felt.” Also, reassure your kids that they should not take the blame for anything going wrong in the family. See them as human beings and acknowledge to them that problems are a part of our lives – basically, normalize facing challenges with the hope to cope and overcome them.

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, 10% of children between the age of 3 and 17 years are diagnosed with anxiety, depression, or both. And this rate has been rising every year.

Signs of Depression and Anxiety in Children As adults, it’s important to remember, we can not raise our children the way our parents raised us because our parents raised us for a world that no longer exists. Murungyi says, “The pressure and challenges keep changing. Today the world is more competitive, day to day stressors and expectations are higher and there are more evident family challenges such as divorce and separation”.

Depression and anxiety have a combination of signs and symptoms in children. Murungyi emphasizes that these are not meant to diagnose a child and a parent should use these symptoms to consult a specialist only if you see a combination of these signs consistently developing over time

Depression• Change in sleep pattern - insomnia or

hypersomnia• Change in appetite and weight• Feeling low in energy and unwilling to participate

in typically enjoyed activities • Loss of interest • Lack of concentration • Prolonged sadness • Irritable mood • Saying sentences like “I wish I wasn’t alive or I

want to hurt myself. • Drop-in school performance

Anxiety• Avoiding school for a prolonged period• Separation • Fearing to socializing or being in the crowd• Fearing parents separation or divorce• Selective mutism- remaining completely silent

when expected to speak like at school• Panicking, fidgeting, or sweating • Poor concentration or ADHD• Avoiding eye contact • Being aggressive

Coming to terms with mental health problems do exist in children.Despite seeing the symptoms, not all parents can accept that a child can go through something severe as anxiety or depression. Murungyi makes us aware that by denying this fact, the disorder will simply not disappear. Children who are left unsupported, pick unhealthy coping mechanisms because it is the easiest way to run away from the problem. Denying the existence of a mental health challenge needing support in children unfortunately restricts them from reaching their full potential as they continue to grow into adults.

Where should you start to help as parents? • Listen to your child and do your best not to be

judgemental about the situation. Start prioritising

building a relationship with your child to the point that they are comfortable talking to you about their problems.

• Be compassionate. Ask them how happy are you on a scale of one or 10? If they say 2 don’t question how can that be as you have given you everything.

• Don’t say things like you will get over it. Validate their feelings and let them know you are there to help.

Seeking professional supportIt is important for both parents to agree on how you desire to raise your children so you can agree on the SHARED consistent roles you will play in discipline, enforcing rules, emotional support, family time, values. In Uganda, there is not enough mental health awareness or a concrete support system however, the brighter side, Murungyi shares is that there are hospitals and organisations that have affiliations with psychologists and psychiatrists. Consult your pediatricians for referrals where possible. Schools should also prioritise building affiliations with child mental health specialists and professionals. Below are some places affiliated with child mental health professionals to start from:• Industrial Medical Services - Kiira Road

(Murungyi consults here)• The Surgery hospital (Naguru) will recommend

you to the right professionals for the treatments.• Safe Haven Child and Family Counselling (Ntinda)• Family Health Information and Education

Services (Nakulabye)

Depending on the level of anxiety, psychologists or psychiatrists will suggest therapy and medication. CBT therapy, Interpersonal Therapy and Play Therapy are some of the most common approaches specialists may use to help reshape distorted thoughts of the children and how they perceive themselves.

Here are some supportive ways Murungyi suggests parents can adopt to elevate children suffering from mental health• Plan game nights• Use positive affirmations • Have meals together • Take them for outdoor experiences• Have a ‘You Time-Walk’ or drive to run errands

and talk• Look out for good behavior and appreciate them.

Murungyi’s final word of advice is “Be patient, consistent and intentional with

the time and relationships you have with your children. Schedule time if you must. Children are like plants, and you have to nurture them with all the love, care and

support to see them flourish.”

5.5. TAXATIONTaxation in Uganda has been mandated to a central Government semi-autonomous body – Uganda Revenue Authority and there are a number of laws through which residents and non-residents are taxed. These among others include; • Income Tax Act - ITA • The Value Added Tax Act; • Stamps Act • The Traffic and Road Safety Act;• East African Community Customs

Management Act (imports and exports).A resident individual is a person who has a permanent home in Uganda; or is present in Uganda for a period of 183 days or more during the financial year or an average of 122 days over 2 financial years . A non-resident is therefore the opposite of a resident. A resident company is one which; is incorporated in Uganda under the laws of Uganda; is managed or controlled in Uganda at any time during the financial year; undertakes majority of its operations in Uganda during the. A resident partnership is one where any of the partners was a resident person in Uganda during the financial year.

SUMMARY OF RATES THAT APPLY TO VARIOUS DOMESTIC TAX TYPESIncome Tax is imposed on a person’s taxable income at specific rates. A person under the ITA includes; an individual, a company, partnership, trustee, government and subdivision of government. Income Tax is charged on every person who has chargeable income (comprising business, employment and property) for each year of income. Chargeable Income is the GROSS INCOME of a person for the year of income less total deductions allowed under the ITA while Gross Income is the total amount of business, employment and property income other than exempt income. There are two categories of persons under the ITA, resident and non-residents.

A. PAYE (PAY AS YOU EARN)

PAYE tax should be deducted at source by the employer and remitted monthly to URA. Employees who pay PAYE and have no other source of income do not need to complete an annual tax return.

B. Corporate Income Tax• Resident and non resident companies – 30% of

profits after deducting expenses• Mining Companies – Ranges between 25% and

45% of profits• Trustee Companies – 30% of Income• Retirement Fund – 30% of income• Branches are taxed at 30% and there is an additional tax of 15% which effectively applies to

profits repatriated to head office

C. Withholding Tax

i) Professional fees• ResidentsA resident person who pays management or professional fees to a resident professional is required to withhold tax at a rate of 6% of the gross payment.

• Non residentsWithholding tax is imposed on every non-resident person deriving incomeunder a Ugandan - source service contract. This is a contract under which the principle purpose is the performance of services which gives rise to income sourced in Uganda, and any goods supplied under the contract are only incidental to the purpose. A Ugandan-sourced service contract does not include an employment contract. The tax is charged at a rate of 15% of the gross amount of any payment to the non-resident under the Ugandan sourced service contract.Any person who enters into any service contract with a non-resident is required, within 30 days of entering into the contract, to notify the Commissioner of the nature and duration of the service contract, and disclose the particulars of the non-resident to whom the payment is to be made, as well as the full contract value. Basing on this, the Commissioner may require the payer to withhold the relevant tax at a rate specified in the Commissioner notice

ii) Interest paymentsA resident person who pays interest to another resident person is required to withhold tax at 15% of the gross amount of the interest paid. This withholding tax is not applicable where interest is paid by a natural person, interest, other than interest from government securities, paid to a financial institution, interest is paid by a company to an associated company or interest paid is exempt from tax in the hands of the recipient.

MAY - JUNE 202134

iii) DividendsA resident Company which pays a dividend to a resident shareholder is required to withhold tax at 15% of the gross amount of the dividend paid, except where the dividend income is exempt from tax in the hands of the shareholder. Where the shareholder is a natural person (resident individual), the tax withheld on such dividend income is final.

iv) International paymentsTax is imposed on every non-resident person who derives any dividend, interest, royalty, rent, natural resource payment or management charge from sources in Uganda. The tax is withheld by the payer at a rate of 15% of the gross amount before payment/remittance of the amount is made. However interest paid abroad by a resident person is exempt from tax if:• Borrowing is through debentures which were

widely issued for purposes of raising loan capital to carry out business in Uganda; and

• Borrowing is made from a financial Institution of a public character

v) Non Resident entertainers or sports personsTax is imposed on the income derived in Uganda by every non-resident entertainer, sports person, or theatrical, musical or other related groups of entertainers. The tax is charged at a rate of 15% of the gross amount of the remuneration derived by the public entertainer/sports person. Where the tax is levied on a group, every member of the group is jointly and severally liable for payment of the tax.The URA helpline is an excellent source of information 0800117000

Digital Minimalism

as an Antidote to

Balancing Time in a World

Where everything is

ONLINE.by: Jordan Mafumbo

We need to find a way of helping our children minimise the downsides while obtaining the upsides that this technology has to offer. Cal Newport recommends digital minimalism.

What is digital minimalism?

Digital minimalism is a philosophy of technology use in which you focus your time on a small number of carefully selected and optimised activities that strongly support things your values and then happily miss out on everything else.

Helping your child adopt digital minimalism.

Firstly, your teenager must do a thirty-day digital declutter, during which he takes a break from the optional technology, applications and websites. The optional is that whose temporary removal doesn’t significantly disrupt the daily operations of their school or personal life. During that time you should help them set values. You can occupy them with board games too. After the thirty days, do not just let them reinstall all the applications. They should do so while prioritising applications that support the values you helped them set. On the social media applications they retain after the thirty-day digital declutter, help them unfollow accounts that do not align with the values you helped their set. This leaves them with only the essential connections they need; this cuts down their feed and shortens their scroll time. They will thereafter feel the need to set aside the phone & engage in physically engaging activities like playing sports.

You can advise your teenager to go an extra mile and do away with social media applications on their device so that they have to use the websites. Accessing the website is harder than accessing the application; this acts as a disincentive. The best way to maintain a great diet is by not having unhealthy food lying around the house and the same applies to online internet usage. Creating this disincentive makes accessing social media hectic & makes activities like learning how to play the guitar admirable prospects. On your teenager’s computer, block gaming websites & video streaming services. You can do this by using programmes like Cold Turkey and Freedom. This sets up their environment in a way that disallows unwanted behaviour. The secret to changing one’s habits is that one’s environment has a larger effect than one’s willpower does. Give them one hour of break time per day. Blocking these gaming websites will prompt them to instead try playing games like scrabble—which engages their mental faculties broadly—with friends. Android phones have an application called Google’s digital wellbeing that allows you temporarily block applications on your child’s phone until they are done with tasks. It also allows you set a bedtime at which your child’s phone becomes totally unusable. These phone applications that restrict some distracting applications alter their environment which in turn influences their habits; as an upside, their sleep schedule will become healthier.

Turn off the notifications of your child’s optional applications and websites. Notifications can be distracting when unregulated. They break the total focus that is necessary for them to concentrate when studying or to fully enjoy their friend’s company.

The current internet age has made us manic

information addicts—with our children being

the most susceptible—by incessantly bombarding us with gossip and news

which takes advantage of the dopamine

that’s inherent in us. On one extreme we

have the neo-luddites who advocate for the abandonment of the newest technology;

on the other extreme we have the quantified

self-enthusiasts who integrate devices in all

aspects of their lives with the goal of optimising

their existence.

EVERYDAY LIFE

MAY - JUNE 202140

While studying or conversing, reorienting themselves into a state of flow when distracted by incessant notifications is nearly impossible.

Schedule your child’s diversions just like you schedule your ‘cheat meals’ in a diet. As I noted earlier, we are not going the neo-luddite route of cutting out all technology; we are rather aiming at using technology in an intentional way. Your child’s social media should be scheduled so as to maximise its purpose. It should not be something he compulsively checks every 50 seconds. This will enable them to spend the rest of their time taking part in co-curricular activities like playing basketball that are necessary for building teamwork skills. Encourage your child to seek out nutritious forms of information as opposed to scrolling through social media. By that I mean, introduce them to long-form nuanced content like, podcasts and great books that exercise their attention span. You can also help them start a podcast of their own. This helps your children build a good reading culture and an impeccable attention span. Encourage your child to leave their phone at home when going out to spend time with friends. This keeps them present, engaged & mitigates their fear of missing out on things that are happening elsewhere. It helps them focus on enjoying time with their friends rather than mindlessly scrolling through their phone. Set a no-phone rule at the dining table during family dinners. This helps the children bond with their family rather than scrolling through their phones. The bonding & jokes shared at family meals are an essential in creating a sense of community for the children. Enroll your child in activities that do not involve getting online. He could try soccer or swimming, book clubs and helping the disadvantaged children learn how to read & write. Contemporary life instantly gratifies & satiates, but neither enchants nor inspires. Most of the blame can be put on the quotidian technologies & platforms we use to communicate. Ensuring that your child sets these technologies aside for some hours daily and takes part in more physically engaging hobbies benefits society & makes their technology breaks more meaningful.

Accompany your child through digital minimalism. Do it with them. This will help them have an accountability partner which is tantamount to having a gym partner. It will make it easier, more exhilarating and interesting.

8.1. THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IN UGANDAEnglish is the basic language of education used in Kampala schools. In addition schools complement this with Swahili and French.

THE EDUCATION SYSTEMNursery schools: From the age of 3 to 5; This is more like kindergarten. All nursery schools in Kampala are privately owned.Primary schools: From the age of 6 to 12. Primary schools are both private and Government owned. There are 81 Government owned primary schools.Secondary schools:From the age of 12 to 18. This level is categorized into O-level (a cycle of 4 years) and A-level (A cycle of 2 years). Secondary schools are both private and government owned. International schools also offer international curricula - eg the IB system.University:There are a range of universities in and around Kampala, both government and privately owned, some with religious affiliations. Also technical

colleges, all of which can easily be found on the internet. Courses last between 3 - 5 years.

8.2. MONTESSORI SCHOOLSSchools using the Montessori method

Montessori education follows the principles of an Italian physician, Maria Montessori. She believed in human development through freedom of choice within limits, in a discovery- type situation rather than by formal instruction, in mixed age classrooms. This method only works really well with a Montessori trained teacher. Although new to Uganda, Montessori primary schools have been established for many years in Europe and America.Honey-Tree Montessori Pre-School950 Kisugu Roadt: 0414268068, m: 0752 616777 Montessori Pre - School and Day Care Centre2155 Old Jinja Roadm: 0782 713547e: [email protected]

“Signs to look out for in teenagers, solutions and precautions to take against cyberbullying.”Impacts of social media. The anonymity created by social media presents favourable grounds for mentally harmful behaviour like cyberbullying. This frees strangers from the consequences of in person confrontation and gives them the confidence to attack others online. The prevalence of cyberbullying in contemporary life is one of the reasons we’ve seen a spike in mental health issues worldwide in the past years.

One of the main issues with social media is how big of an impact it has on people’s attention spans and its manipulation of mood. Social media feeds are engineered to titillate our basest instincts, create outrage, the fear of missing out and indulge short attention spans. The necessity to attract more eyeballs is what creates the primacy of dark emotions over positive thoughts hence presenting favourable conditions for cyberbullying. The fact that its often beyond our control is what bothers us the most. Many complaints have been raised about how social media was meant to make us more connected but ended up degrading our most immediate concrete relationships. We see this happen all the time when a group of friends go out for a lunch together and each of them gets taken up by the relentless need to scroll through their social media. People joined Facebook and Twitter to stay in touch with friends across the globe and ended up unable to maintain a conversation with friends sitting in the same room.

Byline: Jordan Mafumbo

IMPACTSSOCIAL

MEDIA

Cyberbullying is arguably the most prominent consequence of social media usage and teenagers are the most susceptible to it. Listed below are some of the warning signs that a teenager is experiencing cyberbullying;• Withdrawal from gatherings with friends and

family.• A sudden decline in grades.• When he or she starts showing signs of

depression or sadness.• He or she gets upset, frustrated or depressed

during or after being online or using their phone.

• Expression of reluctance or refusal to participate in activities previously enjoyed.

• Refusal to go to school or expression of anger and dissatisfaction with a specific class or school in general.

• Making passing statements about suicide and the meaningless of life.

• Oversleeping or not sleeping enough.

Solutions and precautions to take against cyber bullying. As a parent, when you notice the above signs of cyberbullying among your teenagers, approach the discussion with your teenager with an understanding, gentle and supportive tone. Ask questions and express your concern and that way you will be able to identify the root cause of the issue at hand.

If the root cause is discovered to be cyberbullying, ensure that the teenager gets a therapy appointment.

The bes t place to s tart looking for a therapis t could be wellness psychological services (wel lnesspsychug.com). You can also contact them on +256793419397 or +256788136450. We should all endeavour to report trol l accounts that engage in cyber bullying on social media. This informs the management which in turn disables the trol l accounts and creates a heal thy environment for the users.

Murchison Falls Protected Area covers a range of over 4500 km². The wandering herds of elephants and towering Borassus Palms make it a stunning landscape. Visit the Top of Murchison Falls where the Nile is forced through a narrow gap in the rock before plunging 43 metres below. The steep but short walk to the bottom of the Falls is highly recommended. No visit to Murchison is complete without the (three hour) boat trip to the bottom of the Falls, where you will see huge Nile crocodiles, hippos and 100s of birds, including brightly-coloured Bee-eaters, Spoonbills and, occasionally, the rare Shoebill.Dream Balloons Hot air balloon safaris(Murchison Falls National Park)[email protected]
