FLEET KAIZEN

SPRING EDITION

As a new decade unfolds, trading uncertainty still

sees many organisations dealing with major changes

and challenges. Maintaining mobility remains vital to

UK business, and at Toyota and Lexus we are doing

everything we can to help.

Our localisation programme means that your Toyota

or Lexus is safely delivered and maintained by a local

Business Centre anywhere in the UK. Unnecessary

vehicle transportation – and resulting emissions –

are eliminated.

In response to rising CO2 emissions and global

climate change, the UK government recently

committed to ban sales of all new cars powered

solely by internal combustion engines from 2030.

With demand for diesel vehicles continuing to

fall, more and more organisations are looking to

electrified fleets, both hybrid and battery-electric.

Our latest Toyota and Lexus range now includes

22 alternatively fuelled models, providing low and

zero-emission car and light commercial vehicle

options for every business need. Backed by two

decades of electrification experience, 2021 sees the

addition of the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid SUV

and the New All-Electric Lexus UX 300e SUV

(page 28). In addition, the new Toyota PROACE EV

van offers a 205-mile range and exemption from

emission-controlled zones (page 21).

We welcome, too, the second generation of our

game-changing zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell

electric vehicle, the Mirai, with an eye-catching new

design and improved performance (page 6).

Toyota and Lexus are committed to pioneering

technology for zero-emission models. By 2025, we

plan to launch 40 new or updated electrified vehicles

across Europe; of these, at least 10 will be fully

battery-electric.

Exciting driving dynamics and bold styling backed

by quality, reliability and economy ensure that, yet

again, our models and brands have been critically

acclaimed. Which? named Toyota the 2020 Car

Brand of the Year, and Toyota also took Green Fleet

Manufacturer of the Year in the 2020 Business Car

Awards (page 8).

business drive ahead, read on.

120 MILLION TONNES OF CO2 SAVED

Since the launch of the Prius in 1997, over 15 million drivers have saved over 120 million tonnes of CO2 worldwide by choosing a Toyota electrified vehicle instead of an equivalent petrol engine model.

This year, Toyota & Lexus Fleet expands its

range to include all alternatively fuelled

options: battery-electric, self-charging hybrid,

plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell.

Toyota has defined and led the hybrid market for

over 24 years, developing ever more advanced

electric drivetrains, lithium-ion battery and

regenerative charging technologies. Now, for

certain use cases, business appetite for pure

electric vehicles is growing, and Toyota and

Lexus remain centre stage.

ADVANCED OPTIONS FOR EVERY APPLICATION

Requiring no charging infrastructure, self-charging

hybrids currently represent the most convenient and

cost-effective path for fleets to swiftly transition to

greener motoring. Toyota and Lexus continue to

develop ever-more efficient, responsive and desirable

hybrid options.

The RAV4 is available as Toyota’s most advanced

plug-in hybrid to date with a 2.5-litre, 219bhp petrol

engine matched to a new high-capacity lithium-

ion battery and an enhanced boost converter.

Best-in-class performance includes an expected

38-mile zero-emission driving range in EV mode and

a CO2 output of less than 29g/km.

In parallel, EV technology is rapidly advancing.

PROACE CITY, Toyota’s compact van, and PROACE,

the award-winning medium duty commercial van, will

be available with full electric powertrains. This year

also sees the arrival of the new all-electric vehicle

from Lexus, the UX 300e. Covering 196 miles on a

single charge,† it will complete the average UK weekly

commute entirely emission-free.

With a 300-mile driving range using hydrogen

alone, and emitting only water, in 2016 the Toyota

Mirai became the world’s first mass-market

hydrogen-powered vehicle. Now, the launch of the

second-generation Mirai sees a further increase in

range through improvements to the fuel cell stack

and larger on-board hydrogen tanks.

ALTERNATIVE FUEL OPTIONS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Slashing carbon emissions is fundamental to combating climate change and global warming. Safeguarding

air quality in cities means cutting vehicular pollution and minimising the most harmful emissions from

combustion powertrains.

By powering cars differently, we can significantly reduce or eliminate the use of fossil fuels.

HYDROGEN PIONEER

Second-generation, 5-seat new Mirai

TOYOTA FCEV LUNAR CRUISER

A collaborative project between Toyota and

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency

(JAXA) will design and build a hydrogen-

powered lunar rover vehicle. It’s been dubbed

‘Lunar Cruiser’ (a nod to the ‘go-anywhere’

pedigree of Toyota’s legendary Land Cruiser).

The vehicle will provide 13m3 of living space –

comfortable accommodation for two people, or

four in an emergency, with a cruising range of

over 10,000km (approximately 6,200 miles). The

moon landing for the ‘Lunar Cruiser’ is planned

for the latter half of the 2020s.

Lower, longer and wider, the arresting design

of the all-new second-generation Mirai fuel

cell electric vehicle (FCEV) offers greater

comfort, with improved performance, and

now seats five.

Low lines, elegant proportions and 20-inch

wheels create a powerful and distinctive

look. Inside, an instrument panel with a 12.3-

inch centre display wraps around the driver.

Yoshikazu Tanaka, chief engineer of the new

Mirai, explains, “I want customers to choose

the Mirai not just because it’s an FCEV,

but because they want this car and it just

happens to be an FCEV.”

An improved drivetrain develops 10% more

power, increasing output to 174hp, whilst the

driving range is now extended to over 400 miles

– 30% further than the current model*.

Toyota is a leading proponent of developing

sustainable energy from hydrogen, driving

several global initiatives to make a cleaner,

zero-emission hydrogen society a reality. One

example is Hydrogen Mobility Europe (H2ME)

– a flagship project aimed at developing the

first truly pan-European network of hydrogen

refuelling stations.

EWSUK POLICE TRIAL

‘BLUE LIGHT’ HYBRIDS

The Toyota Corolla Touring Sports Hybrid model,

manufactured in the UK, is modified to meet police

requirements, including a chequered livery and roof

light bar. The vehicle’s reliability, durability and safety

mean it’s well matched for the tough day-in, day-out

demands of police work, whilst reducing emissions

during city patrols.

AWARD-WINNING PERFORMANCE

Yet again, Toyota and Lexus set the standards for others to follow…

Toyota has been promoting the suitability of

self-charging hybrid technology vehicles for

Emergency Service and Public Sector use. A Blue

Light demonstrator programme is now providing

month-long demonstrator trials to regional police

forces around the country.

BUSINESS CAR GREEN FLEET MANUFACTURER OF THE YEAR 2020

For a second consecutive year Toyota & Lexus Fleet

received the Green Fleet Manufacturer of the Year

title in the Business Car Awards, recognising their

work in providing environmentally focused products

and services for business customers.

WHICH? CAR BRAND OF THE YEAR 2020 FOR TOYOTA

Consumer champion Which? named Toyota the Car Brand

The Prius Plug-in combines the strengths and peace

of mind of full hybrid technology with the benefits

of extended electric vehicle driving. The new RDE2-

compliant (see over) model sees major equipment

and functionality upgrades. Its multimedia system

now includes Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™

connectivity, providing easy access to popular apps

on the vehicle’s touchscreen display.

Toyota Safety Sense is also updated, with advanced

features including Lane Trace Assist, Intelligent

Adaptive Lane Control and Cyclist Detection. The

Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System is also standard,

as is powered lumbar support in the driver’s seat

for Excel grade.

NEW PRIUS PLUG-IN

ACOUSTIC VEHICLE ALERTING SYSTEM  (AVAS)

Because of their super-quiet operation, new electric

vehicles must generate an artificial driving noise.

In new Toyota and Lexus self-charging hybrids and

battery-electric vehicles, an external noise gently

alerts pedestrians – for example when navigating

car parks and at low speed. Meanwhile, inside the

cabin, the system also gives the driver ambient

feedback on current driving conditions.

REAL DRIVING EMISSIONS STEP 2 (RDE2) STANDARDS

Real Driving Emissions testing measures vehicle

emissions under actual driving conditions using

portable sensors. From January 2021, all new cars

must meet RDE second-stage criteria for nitrogen

oxides (NOx) and particulate emissions.

Enhancements to the latest Toyota Camry

include the addition of the Acoustic Vehicle

Alerting System and compliance with Real Driving

Emissions Step 2 (RDE2) standards. The Design

grade also sees front fog lights and an auto-

dimming rear-view mirror included as standard.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 event was

moved to September and held without fans for the

first time in its history. By completing over 3,100 miles

at the Circuit de la Sarthe, the Toyota Gazoo Racing

#8 car driven by Sébastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and

Brendon Hartley won by five laps.

Despite using 35% less fuel than the first generation

of LMP1 hybrids from 2012, the TS050 Hybrid lapped

around ten seconds faster. Holding four consecutive

pole positions and three victories, the TS050 Hybrid

also holds the race lap record. Competing since

2016, the TS050 will now be retired to make way for

the new GR Super Sport hypercar, providing another

generation of motorsport innovation to create even

better road cars.

GR SUPRA RACING CONCEPT

In the spirit of the most celebrated model in

Toyota’s sports car heritage, Toyota’s latest Supra

Racing Car Concept delivers high performance

both on road and track. A compact, two-door

car created by Toyota Gazoo Racing, the GR

Supra Racing Concept has a pure front-engine/

rear-wheel drive configuration and makes use of

advanced lightweight materials.

Born from World Rally Championships, the GR Yaris

brings the thrill of motorsport performance to the

road. Developed with the experts at Toyota Gazoo

CUT EMISSIONS AND REDUCE WHOLE-LIFE COSTS.

Since unveiling the first Prius back in 1997, Toyota,

the world’s hybrid technology pioneer, has continued

to lead the transition towards advanced electrified

vehicle technologies. Businesses choosing our low-

or zero-emission vehicles benefit from clean and

fuel-efficient motoring. Even better, businesses can

unlock lower operating and ownership costs. Low

CO2 emission models reduce taxation. Your company

pays lower National Insurance contributions and

drivers pay less in Benefit-in-Kind. These company

and personal tax savings can amount to thousands of

pounds over each vehicle’s lifetime.

A SAFE, COVID-SECURE, LOCAL NETWORK. MAKE ALL THE RIGHT CHOICES.

We have an extensive network of Toyota and Lexus

Business Centres across the UK (visit our websites

to find your nearest centre). Our Covid-secure

operations ensure safe access to an unprecedented

selection of model types, specifications and

drivetrain technologies. Commercial Vehicle Centres

provide expert advice for LCV customers, supporting

standard and bespoke conversions.

FEWER MILES, LESS WASTAGE.

Where business customers have multiple locations,

our fleet localisation programme avoids regional

dealers transporting vehicles unnecessarily.

Customers can manage, discuss and administer their

vehicles centrally, but elect for delivery, servicing

and maintenance to be fulfilled locally to avoid

unnecessary travel. We estimate the scheme has

already saved 150 tonnes of CO2 and has been

adopted by four of the top ten leasing companies.

SAME-DAY RESPONSE. INFORMED DECISIONS, FASTER.

Get same-day access to fleet specialists at our

Business Centres nationwide. You’ll find experienced

advisers who are specially trained to give advice on

tax and whole-life costs, model choices and selecting

In 1989, the first-generation Lexus LS redefined how luxury

cars could be made. Single-panel, sculpted pressings

achieved clean lines, whilst dispensing with endless chrome

strips showed that less was definitely more. Lexus engineers

reinvented luxury vehicle interiors, too. Switches and

gently backlit displays became logically ordered within a

graceful console.

Lexus set the bar high for competitors. Alongside

establishing an enviable reputation for quality and customer

service, the brand continued to reset design expectations

for luxury vehicles over the next decade, including creating

the first crossover with the Lexus RX.

By 2000, Lexus designers began working on a new design

language that would be more distinctive and more natively

Japanese. Dubbed L-finesse, it is embodied by three

Japanese characters which translate as ‘intriguing elegance‘,

‘incisive simplicity‘ and ‘seamless anticipation‘.

The first hint of the new approach was seen on the 2006

GS saloon. By the LFA supercar in 2011, the Lexus ‘look’

was almost fully formed. The latest Lexus LF-30 concept

illustrates how L-finesse is being successfully reinvented as

we move towards a new, electrified age.

MORE RESPONSIVE

Changes to the power delivery for the electric motor make

acceleration smoother and more linear. The engine can

operate at lower rpm, making the transition to engine power

after EV mode quieter.

GREATER RIDE COMFORT

By fine-tuning the performance of the tyres and the

Adaptive Variable Suspension, the car’s ride, posture and

stability are enhanced. Additional seat padding further

minimises vibration.

DRIVER ASSISTANCE ENHANCEMENTS*

A new digital rear-view mirror shows real-time images

from the rear parking camera whilst the Panoramic View

Monitor now includes a pedestrian detection function.

A fully automated Advanced Park System makes parking

even easier.

MULTIMEDIA

The 12.3-inch touchscreen functions include a call-up switch

to give instant access to frequently used controls, such as

adjustment of the seat and steering wheel heaters. Support

for Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ ensures seamless

smartphone integration.

HAND-CRAFTED INTERIOR DETAILING

Striking new interior detailing celebrates two time-honoured

Japanese skills. The Nishijin and Haku option for the door

panels weaves together black and silver in an organic

pattern inspired by waves shimmering in moonlight.

NEW

S

Deliveries for the UX 300e, the new all-electric Lexus, will begin from March.

AMPLE RANGE, ZERO EMISSIONS

With a high-capacity lithium-ion battery, the UX 300e

covers 196 miles* with zero emissions – ample range for the

average UK weekly commute. The UX 300e recharges at

home overnight, or at a 50kW public charging station, with

fast charging to 80% capacity in just 50 minutes.†

ELECTRIFYING PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING

A high-output, 150kW (204 DIN hp) motor develops

300Nm of torque, ensuring smooth yet decisive acceleration

from 0 to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds. The UX 300e enjoys a low

centre gravity and optimum front/rear weight distribution.

EFFICIENCY SAVINGS

Driving 10,000 miles per year, a UX 300e owner would be

£3,000 better off after four years compared to the driver

of a comparable diesel-powered premium compact SUV.‡

£3,000 OLEV PLUG-IN GRANT ELIGIBILITY

To promote the widespread use of affordable, zero-emission

vehicles, the government provides a grant of up to £3,000.

Currently, the UX 300e is the only premium SUV to meet

the eligibility criteria for the maximum discount.

FULLY CONNECTED

Smart connectivity provides real-time data on the vehicle’s

battery. By linking the vehicle with the Lexus Link app, New

UX 300e owners can control charging and access a station

finder for the UK’s 25,000 charging point network.

OPTIMUM SAFETY AS STANDARD

All models enjoy Lexus Safety System+. Standard features

include: a Pre-Collision system; Lane Keep Assist;

Automatic High-Beam system to see pedestrians and road

signs more clearly at night; Road Sign Assist; and Dynamic

Radar Cruise Control.

* WLTP data; range shown is for UX 300e with 17” alloys. † Indicative charge time based on 50kW DC charger.

Time may vary due to ambient conditions and the rate of charge.

‡ This calculation is based on the average economy of competitor models, using a mixture of cheap overnight charging (70%), daytime top-ups at home (20%) and using a public DC charger (10%).

WHAT THE PRESS SAYThe UX 300e offers a compelling zero-emission proposition for business fleets. The motoring press agree…

NEW UX 300E

“It’s quiet, efficient enough, makes good use of the advantages of the drivetrain and is a relaxing car to drive.”

BBC Top Gear

“Electric power plays to the UX’s strengths and elevates it into an even more refined crossover with plenty to attract the fleet buyer.”

Fleet World

“On the road, the UX is impressive. The car’s power feels just right for its size, with punchy acceleration in any situation.”
