FRESH FISHFABULOUS WINES

Friday night’s legendary fundraising party onthe Harbour Head is always a sell out. So this yearwe’ve created more room in the tent for what’ssure to be a rockin’, foot-stomping night toremember.

Hayseed Dixie have played more than1,000 live shows and sold more than halfa million albums worldwide. They’ve alsoplayed Glastonbury and many othermajor festivals. The boys are famous fortheir unique rockgrass covers of tracksfrom AC/DC’s Ace of Spades to Queen’sBohemian Rhapsody.

Havinga ballThis year the team behind Porthleven’s Masked Ball will be running the bars, décor and production at the Food & Music Festival.

As well as a wealth of event experience, Kelvin Batt and AlecShort bring a fresh injection of enthusiasm and ideas — anda black book full of contacts from the music world andbeyond.

We spoke to local lad Kelvin about what new delights they’llbe contributing to this year’s Festival.

First of all, tell us about the MaskedBall. We’re now in our eighth year and in that time we’ve grownfrom an event for 400 to one for 4000. It takes place on the cliffs nearBeacon Crag just outside Porthleven on the first weekend in May and it’s always a sell out. If I was to say 15 yearsago to people we’d have Groove Armada playing on the cliffs they’d have looked at me like I was crazy but nowwe’ve done that. It’s one of a kind really because we’ve no big sponsors or companies up there, it happens becauseof the hard graft of a group of local people, much like the Food Festival. What a great two weeks for Porthleven!

What will the Masked Ball team bring to the Food & Music Festival? To be asked to do the Food Festival is a massive honour for us. We hope we can add to what’s already a greatFestival and help take it to the next level. If you look at the line-up there’s already great bands and the food side hasa real superstar line-up, we want to bring our contacts in and to bring in some top international acts to complementthe brilliant local talent. Hayseed Dixie, who we’ve booked for Friday night, have played sold out shows across theUK and US so it’s a massive coup for us to have them here in Porthleven. Being able to book that kind of act dependson the contacts we have from doing the Masked Ball.

What else can we expect to see that’s different at this year’s Food& Music Festival? We’ve got some big ideas we’re hoping to bring to fruition. The first is we’d like toincorporate the Lime Kiln itself into the stage over there, whether that’s using the bottom section as a bar or usingit as a better backdrop or even putting the bands on top of it. We’ve got Helston School involved making a hugemermaid that we’ll float on a pontoon out in the harbour and we’ll be bringing in lots of décor, from flags to buntingto fit with the 2015 Feast and Fiesta theme. The kids’ area, Jollyboat, will have a pirate theme and that’ll include adome with a tunnel to get inside where you’ll find a giant mirrorball skull as well as a few surprises! We’re alsolooking at bridging the gap across the harbour to help the flow and stop the bottleneck you can get over onBreageside. It’ll make it easier to walk around and we’ll have a troll taking tolls to cross with some of the moneygoing towards the fishermen’s charity — so everyone will benefit. We’re so stoked to be involved and we’re goingto push the boat out!

See the back page for more details on the 2015 Masked Ball.

Chip off the old blockChef Jack Stein will be cooking in our Chefs’ Theatre onSaturday. We caught up with him beforehand to get thelowdown on the Stein’s new Porthleven restaurant, pastFestival appearances — and cooking with his Dad.

What's great about Porthleven? As this festivaldemonstrates, Porthleven has a vibrant food and drink community andis fast becoming the food capital of the south coast of Cornwall. Not abad right hand reef break either.

Tell us about the new Stein's restaurant here? Our Porthleven restaurant offers aselection of some of our best offerings from our Padstow restaurants and also a chance to taste and share some ofRick’s newest recipes from his adventures from Venice to Istanbul. We were attracted to this spot by one pure andsimple thing – the view of the harbour.

Have you been to the food festival before and what are you excitedabout? Yes, in 2011, I cooked a spring ragout of turbot – I was overwhelmed by how busy the event was andhow wonderful the local fishermen were who supplied the fish to the festival. I’m excited to demo with Dad – I haven’tdone that for about five years so I’d like to see how far he has come in that time…

Can you reveal what you'll be cooking at the festival? It’s likely to besomething from Rick’s new book From Venice to Istanbul, but we've still to make the final call.

Have the two of you cooked together on stage before? We cooked togetherat the BBC Good Food Show a few years ago and most recently we cooked Christmas dinner together for the family. You can expect Rick to be leading and me reminding him when he forgets — we once cooked Malaccan blackpepper crab and I had to remind him about the black pepper!

Catch Jack and Rick Stein in our Chef’s Theatre at 4pm on Saturday. Rick will be signing copies of his newbook at their restaurant between 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

I don’t visit Cornwall quite asmuch as I used to - mainly because of the demands of having small kids, but I’ve got a little tiny place in Cornwallmyself. I like going down to St Mawes in particular, where I’ve spent many a happy holiday. I’ve got lots of favouritespots and I particularly like eating there. I love the Gurnard’s Head - many a delicious meal has been had there. Ilove the art deco swimming pool in Penzance and I am very fond of the maritime museum in Falmouth, as well asso many of the coastal walks that I’ve done, which have given me lots of pleasure over the years. I can’t wait tointroduce them to my children.

What did you think of Porthleven? I fell madly in love with it, quite possibly because itreminds me in so many significant ways of St Mawes. I like the community feeling and I’m fascinated by the fact thatthere is such a concentration of fantastic eating-places. The locals are incredibly friendly; I’ve had more fun eveningsin Porthleven than I’ve had in London over the last year!

Tell us about your new TV show. Why should people tune in? I think theprogramme is interesting for anyone who is interested in food and/or business. For me it’s fun because I get tocombine these two passions of mine.

Although I’m usually introduced as having worked in the hotel industry all my life, I specifically worked on the foodand beverages side. I was responsible for many years for opening up new restaurants, setting menus, forecastingand budgets – and inevitably, there was a lot of firing and hiring that went along with that.

It was so lovely to get back to something I did with so much pleasure for 15 years! It was very nice to be workingcollaboratively with people who were so passionate and knowledgeable about their own businesses.

Alex’s brand new show is a 16-part series due to air on BBC2 in late Spring. Each week, Alex will visit adifferent restaurant in the UK, each searching for a chef to transform their kitchen. Applicants go head-to-head, proving their worth through a series of progressively challenging tasks. The series will feature Améliesrestaurant in Porthleven.

Food lovers, innovative Cornish butchers & food wholesalersPassionate about produce, serious about service

A real taste of CornwallGavin Roberts is MD of the Kernow Sausage Company who’ve had a stallserving delicious sausages at our Festival every year since it began. We caughtup with him to find out what’s new for the company — and why they keepcoming back for more.

Tell us about the Kernow Sausage company – howlong have you been going and why did you startup? I started the company by accident about eight or nine years ago over a kitchentable. I agreed to cater for a little landlord’s barbeque that ended up not being a smallfamily occasion but over 250 people! From there the vibrancy of Cornwall’s farmer’smarkets and the local food and drink festival scene helped establish the brand.Slowly but surely we then started to work with pubs and restaurants and the oddindependent shop and before you know it here we are nine year’s later and we’ve

just acquired another business and expanded our reach across Cornwall and into Devon.

What makes your sausages so great? The strapline says it all – Made with love, eaten withpassion. The moment you start not loving what you do any more it all goes wrong. But I can tell you honestly that Ieat as many sausages now as I did when we first started up!

What’s special about Porthleven Food Festival? One of the things I like most aboutit is that it’s completely independent and there’s a really strong community vibe, which is absolutely lovely. It has alittle something extra that you can’t quite put your finger on — an atmosphere and an essence to it that a lot ofplaces try to get but never quite manage. It’s really well run by the team of volunteers and a fun day for everyone.

We hear you’ll be incorporating our Feast and Fiesta theme intoyour stall this year? Can you reveal any more? We’ll be looking at the theming of the stall as wellas the food offer and our recipes, but more than that you’ll just have to come and see us to find out!

You’ll find the Two Brother’s Butchery in the Main Marquee and the Kernow Sausage Company around theHarbourside.

SundayStay and enjoy the wind down as Sunday rolls in onthe breeze, bringing a quieter pace and a lovelylaid-back vibe.

Squashbox Theatre bring history and mystery, lots of laughs, tall tales and crazycharacters in their puppet show Stones and Bones. Find out about archaeology andfossils, say hello to one of your stone-age ancestors, hear stories of giants and wizardsand maybe even glimpse a dinosaur or two…

Hotch Potch creative workshops will run in the afternoon. Learn circus skills includingjuggling, poi, Diablo, devil sticks and more. Then explore fun ways to make things fromjunk and recycled materials in the craft junk workshop.

The end…In the evening Company B and The People’s String Foundation will take to the stagefrom 6pm until 10pm for a free evening concert.

Last man standingMeet Richard Smith, one of the many skilled and dedicated volunteers whoorganise and run the Festival.

His day job as a police sergeant makes him perfect for his role as Chief Steward, with responsibility for preparing traffic management, safety and fire risk plansand for managing the team of stewards who work during the Festival.

Richard also looks after the clean up that follows the weekend, making him, quite literally, the last man standing.

What does your role involve? In the early stages of planning myrole is almost non-existent other than that I agree to do it… but then you get toFebruary and it picks up momentum. On the weekend itself we’ll start setting up fromWednesday and then on the three days of the festival I’ll be down at the harbour from6am until late.

Do you get to enjoy it at all? Oh yes! The running around andorganising is a certain amount of fun and in the evenings, I have to be there to overseefire and safety, but I do get the chance to enjoy it. The committee is a lovely group ofpeople too, which makes it fun.

What’s the role of the stewarding team? We make sureeveryone’s safe and in the right place at the right time and answer questions. We alsodeal with contingencies: last year we had to close premises and stalls and move amusic stage indoors because of the high seas and winds.

Do you plan based on the weather?Absolutely. This year there’s a low tide for midday Saturday so the seashouldn’t be an issue this time. We’ll look at the weather forecast nearer the time and plan accordingly.

Who stewards at the Festival? They come from different walks of life with many who aren’t connected toPorthleven (those who are tend to want to partake!) There’s a small core from the community but also volunteers from FalmouthUniversity, some studying event management. We’re also speaking to Job Centre Plus about involving people who are looking toget back into work help out this year.

Give Richard a pat on the back if you see him over the weekend!

Anyone can get involved in the Porthleven Food & Music FestivalCommittee. Look out for posters for our AGM around September or get in touch via our website, porthlevenfoodfestival.com

Picture this…As you take in the sights, smells, tastes and sounds ofthe Festival, be sure to wander in and out of our localshops and restaurants. As well as lots of great browsingand buying opportunities, you’ll also find a selection ofimages of local folk.
