What do those words even mean now? ere can be no doubt, aer two years unlike any we have lived through, that the world is a dierent place. We have all learned a lot, about ourselves and each other. Here are some things we have learned at e Shaw:

To experience theatre, you need to be there, live, sharing a space with other people.

eatre can happen in gardens and up trees as well as in theatres.

What happens before and aer the show is just as important as the performance.

All of which explains why the computer can only supplement what we do, not replace it: what is the point of watching a play if, at the end, you simply click a button and go back into your online echo-chamber? Instead, here you are, about to watch a performance among people you don’t know. Please don’t waste the opportuni. Turn to your neighbour, in the interval, or at the end, and ask them: “What are you thinking?”

“The Shaw was a major part of our theatre experience for me and my late partner,

Denny. I fondly reflect on our many lively discussions after every performance.

It became obvious to Denny and me, that we wanted to leave a legacy to ensure that The Shaw will continue to encourage such

conversations and provide inspiration – something that is so needed in our world.

Thank you, Shaw Festival.”

Tagore’s Women: Fiercely Feministby sharada k. eswar

If you hail from or have grown up in a ridiculously cultured Bengali milieu (like I did), then you prob-ably sang from the Gitabitan half your life, too. But with good reason. Rabindranath Tagore was a man far ahead of his time. Challenging the norms of the classroom as a young boy, taking up the pen as a protest against the dominance of the British rule, and most importantly, giving a voice to women through his stories, Tagore has been a permanent fixture in most of our households.

Tagore’s literary creations, and especially the depiction of female characters, has con-tributed greatly to the discussion on issues considered taboo, whether it is widow remarriage, the bold participation of women in the outer world, the nonhierarchical friendship between individuals of dierent castes and religions, the dissociation of important characters with fatalistic nationhood, and so on. Tagore’s texts had the calibre to raise complex emotional

issues and important questions in the reader’s mind. A theme that runs across much of Tagore’s work, for example, is the urge to revisit social oppression and look beyond traditional obligations or parochial boundaries.

What is interesting to note is that many of the questions and themes that Tagore raised through his work align with the questions that feminism has generated. is is not to say that Tagore was a femi-nist in the modern sense of the term, but he aroused a sensibili, com-pelled his audience to engage with and deliberate on many issues that contemporary feminists also assert.

Rabindranath Tagore’s literary genius lay in his abili to carve out characters so grounded in the lived/mundane reali of the world that when they reflect any extraordinary brilliance or quali, the reader is encouraged towards a personal journey of self-discovery, because nothing looks impossible anymore.

Regarded as a stalwart in literature and a thinker whose ideas were far advanced for his times, it would not be surprising to consider him a radical feminist of the Bengal Renais-sance, in particular, and of the Indian subcontinent, in general.

Chitra is a drama on the theme of true love. is play is a work of supreme art. Tagore’s conception of human love finds a beautiful expression in Chitra. It is a fine example of

“For we women are not only the deities of the household fire, but the flame of the soul itself.”rabindranath tagore(ghare baire/the homeand the world)

Tagorean philosophy of truth and illusion. It highlights how the human love shi¡s from the physical to the spiritual, from transience to permanence, from romanticism to realism.

Tagore was both an idealist and a realist. He accepted that the physical attraction between two people is true, but equally true is that if love is centred only on the physicali it turns into lust. He believed that the physical relationship between two people is the groundwork for love, the spiritual relationship between them is its composition, and the structure of love would remain incomplete without this composition. Love finds its attainment when the mind and the heart of the lover are in synchronici with the mind and the heart of the beloved. In the play, Chitra and Arjuna stand for the average woman and the average man. Love between them has a corporeal basis. eir love becomes complete in the last scene of the play when Arjuna meets the real Chitra with all her physical imperfections and exclaims in delight that his life is satisfied.

e play does not say that sexual desire is an act of adoration. e blind-ing, maddening ecstasy of the physical union is not denied in Chitra, but its transience is also recognized. is is clear from the beginning when Arjuna oers his love to Chitra and is ready to break his vow of celibacy for the sake of love. But each of them loves only what is false in the other. Chitra’s beau is nothing but attained physical beau and Arjuna’s is a flawed gallant who has falsely surged. However, neither is inwardly happy: Chitra is not at all thrilled or happy because she knows Arjuna does not really love her, and Arjuna is also not happy because he senses that somewhere something is wrong. On the other hand, Chitra says, “Whom do you seek in these dark eyes, in these milk white arms if you are ready to pay for her the price of probi? Not my true-self, I know. Surely this cannot be love...” is passage conceives the body as a disguise and that the real self of a woman becomes gradually stronger.

Arjuna gladly accepts Chitra in her original form by declaring “Beloved, my life is full.” And thus, the real love sparks up from the ashes of the false love that has gone up in a blaze.

It is in this moment that love is born of deep understanding and shared experience and ultimately leading to the vision of being true to their discarded selves. And when they are about to part there is a feeling of attained maturi, experienced satisfaction and understanding. us, the audience is equipped with an insight that beau is skin-deep and love knows no ‘narrow domestic walls’ and supersedes all frontiers.

Tagore strived to be a feminist in the truest sense, empowering his heroines to fight for an equal status amongst the throes of nineteenth-century patriarchy. Tagore’s women were not submissive, helpless and marginalized creatures who would have no voice of revolt – his deeply spiritual and philosophic orientation gave his female protagonists an empowered awakening accompanied by the ethic of care.

“ at I had beauty, it didn’t take you long to forget. But you were reminded, every step of the way, that I also had intelligence.” (Strir Patra/Letter from the Wife)

“You use a glass mirror to see your face: you use works of art to see your soul.” bernard shaw, back to methuselah

Director’s Noteby kimberley rajkumaree rampersad

While I was a Neil Munro Intern Director here at the Shaw Festival, I wished to direct a play by one of Bernard Shaw’s contemporaries who represented the vastly under-represented peoples and playwrights, as a part of my politics in art. I chose Chitra written by Rabin-dranath Tagore.

As I studied Tagore and immersed myself further in the life and works of Bernard Shaw, I was struck by their commonalities, especially their self-curated and directed educa-tions, and their existence as polymaths: as creators, critics, composers and commentators, where their politics and philosophies could be found embedded in their art. Of their shared themes in their work, e New Woman struck a profound chord with me. e first time I read Chitra I recalled my reaction to first reading Mrs Warren’s Profession and my delight in hearing complex articulations of feminism within exquisite text.

Chitra is Tagore’s own English translation of his dance drama Chitrangada, which he wrote in 1892. As dance is my first theatrical lan-guage, my hope for our production is to honour the roots of Chitra by presenting it with a dance narrative also. Indeed, dance is held in highest esteem in Indian theatre traditions, and its power can be found in its abili to aerate dense text, such as that found in this lyrical drama.

But beyond the theme of the New Woman, politics of feminism, and the importance of dance as language in theatre, I am pulled to this play because of its Timelessness. Because of Love. e sudden spark of attraction Chitra feels for Arjuna sends her on a year’s quest with herself and through herself, to end up with her new self – reincarnated. e appearance of love for someone else will always put us on the path to ourselves in service of loving the other person most truly.

In the end there is only Love.

Production HistoryRabindranath Tagore’s Chitrangada has three versions – the one-act verse play written by Tagore in 1892 at the age of thir-one, the English play Chitra (1913), a translation by the poet himself of the earlier play by the India Socie of London, and the dance-drama composed by the poet when he was seven-five years old and staged for the first time in 1936. All three versions are adapted from a story in the ancient Sanskrit epic, Mahabharata.

Within Bengali popular imagination, the name Chitrangada has itself become almost synonymous with Tagore’s dance-drama, which has been staged countless times on the Bengali stage. In 2012, Rituparno Ghosh directed and acted in his Bengali-language film Chitrangada:  e Crowning Wish loosely based on Tagore’s dance-drama, but chiefly con-cerned with the issue of contemporary gender-change surgery during the preparation of a stage of production of Chitra.

An updated English rendition of Chitra by millennials Prataya Saha, a filmmaker, and theatre director Shatarupa Bhattacharyya, opened in 2018 in Bengaluru at the Alliance Française by Red Polka Productions, and was subsequently produced digitally in 2020.

The Author

R ABINDR ANATH TAGORE (1861-1941) was a poet, writer and humanitar-ian, who played a key role in the renaissance of modern India. He has been described as one of the first global men of the twentieth century.

Tagore was firm friends with Gandhi and became acquainted with many of the leading cultural contemporaries of the day, including W.B. Yeats, Bernard Shaw, Robert Frost and Albert Einstein. In 1913, he was the first person from India to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his work Gitanjali. is made his writings internationally known and presented Tagore the opportu-ni to travel, giving lectures and recitals in many dierent countries. For the world he became the voice of India’s spiritual heritage. For India, especially for Bengal, he became a great living institution.

Although Tagore wrote successfully in all literary genres, he was mainly a poet. Among his over fi¡y volumes of poetry are Manasi (1890;  e Ideal One), Gitimalya (1914; Wreath of Songs) and Balaka (1916;  e Flight of Cranes).

He published more than for plays, taking part in their perfor-mance as actor, producer, director, composer and choreographer. He upheld the classical Indian tradi-tion of drama as the depiction of emotion or rasa rather than of action. He blended this classical element with the folk tradition of Bengali Jatra performance – a combination of group singing, dancing, and acting induced by a trance-like state – achieving a synthesis of music, poetry, dance, drama and costume. Most plays are interspersed with songs and are either lyrical or symbolic with subtle emotional and metaphysi-cal overtones. Tagore described the main principle of his plays, as “the play of feeling and not of action.”

Best known of his experi-ments in dramatic form would include Valmiki Pratibha (1881), Raja O Rani (1889;  e King and the Queen, 1917), Chitrangada (1892; published in English as Chitra, 1913). All of these are in blank verse, and most of them could be described in Tagore’s own words as “a series of dramatic situations ... strung on a thread of melody.”

Upon his death in 1941, leading newspapers around the world published editorials paying tribute to him as “India’s greatest man of letters,” “the soul of Bengal,” and “ambas-sador of friendship between East and West.”

KIMBERLEY RAMPERSAD Director / ChoreographerSHAW 2022: Director/choreographer for Chitra; appearing in Damn Yankees; 7th season. I was born and raised in the communi of North Kildonan, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Trea 1, and fortunate to live in a place where the arts went hand-in-hand with hockey, and mosquitoes with wind-chill; where creativi was as practical as any other virtue. While excellence and education were the mantra of our home, so was generosi of spirit as my parents freely opened our home to others and showered guests with stories, music, dance and love. I think theatre may be a natural convergence of all these elements, and perhaps that is why I am here at the Shaw Festival.

ANAHITA DEHBONEHIE Set and Costume DesignerSHAW 2022: Set and costume designer for Chitra. As a perfor-mance designer, my practice is founded on the principle that truths are communicated most powerfully through evocative sensory experiences. I am com-mitted to work that questions positions of power and creates space for contemporary conver-sation. Born in Iran and currently based in Toronto, I have been fortunate enough to work at a spectrum of scales and in a vari-e of mediums across Canada and internationally. My work as a creator and installation artist

has been featured at the National Arts Centre, Prague Quadrennial, e Vilnius Capital of Culture and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. I am galvanized by the power of collective storytelling and relish the opportuni to introduce audiences to new worlds.

CHRIS MALKOWSKI Lighting DesignerSHAW 2022: Lighting designer for Chitra. I was born and raised in East York, Toronto, and have been grateful to be exposed to such a wide spectrum of cultures and entertainment from a young age. My earliest memory of seeing a show was a production of  e Importance of Being Earnest at Soulpepper while I was in high school. As a child, I always loved directing home-made films with the kids in my

neighbourhood, and in high school drama classes I became fascinated with the abili to tell stories with lighting design. I was very fortunate to be an assistant lighting designer at the Shaw Festival, working on over a dozen productions – my favourites being Middletown and Mythos. I recently had a reviewer describe my lighting design for a show as “slick” which I thought was pret cool.

DARRYN deSOUZA Co-composer / Sound DesignerSHAW 2022: Co-composer/sound designer for Chitra. My whole life, music has been my anchor. As a child, I watched as my dad would entertain a room eortlessly with a song, and the seeds of inspiration were planted. A¡er joining

St Michael’s Choir School, I gained a deep and practical education in sacred choral music over eleven years, from grade three through graduation in grade thirteen. As an artist, I’m thankful to have had the guidance of good teachers and mentors, including my brother Ryan, who gave me the opportuni to thrive in this industry. As Music Director for  e Tenors, I led multiple seven-plus ci tours across North America and around the world. Once, a¡er travelling seventeen hours direct from Hong King to San Francisco, I fell asleep for about sixteen bars of the opening song of the set…miraculously I did not miss a note. “Without music, life would be a mistake.” – Friedrich Nietzsche.

RYAN deSOUZACo-composer / Sound DesignerSHAW 2022: Co-composer/sound designer for Chitra; associate conductor for Damn Yankees; composer/sound designer for  e Doctor’s Dilemma; music director for A Year With Frog and Toad in Concert, 1922 in Concert. Growing up in Mis-sissauga, my parents always made sure music was a huge part of our lives. It led me to this career in the theatre, and now I get to watch my kids fall in love with music and art as they experience it as audience mem-bers here at e Shaw! ey got to see their first live show in two years – A Short History of Niagara – here last summer, and seeing their faces delighted by the show reminded me why we do what we do.

ANDREW LAWRIE ArjunaSHAW 2022: Chitra and Just to Get Married; 6th season. Once, a¡er a show, someone told me, “Seeing this production made my day.” is was my favourite comment that I’ve ever heard from an audience member. By itself it seems to just be a simple and lovely sentiment, but to me it reso-nated with why I chose to become an actor. I feel that my job as an actor is to aect others with my work. Whether that means to provoke important discourse, to instigate dierent ways of thinking or simply to make someone’s day special, that’s why I do what I do. at’s why I’m an actor.

CAITLYN MacINNIS CorpsSHAW 2022: Chitra and Damn Yan-kees; 1st season. I was raised in Fort Erie and grew up in the Niagara Region. At three years old I fell in love with performing, thanks to dance. By seven years old, I sang in natural-beau pageants and was cast in my first musical. I’ve been captivated ever since. When I saw Black representation in Shaw’s Ragtime, I realized a career in theatre was possible for me too. I’m deeply grateful to be in the Shaw company and excited to begin my first season! Denise Williams, Saccha Dennis, Philip Akin, Sabryn Rock and Yolanda Bonnell were valuable mentors who oered me guidance and support during my training at Sheridan.

DAVID ANDREW REID CorpsSHAW 2022: Chitra and Damn Yankees; assistant choreographer for Damn Yankees; 4th season. My artistry is influenced by two Jamaicans, my grandfather (one of the island’s most renowned tenors), also named David Reid, and my dance teacher, Tony Wilson. I performed my first musi-cal when I was sixteen at the Jamaica Musical eatre Company (my grandfather was a found-ing member) and the resident choreographer was Mr Wilson, who invited me to train and perform with his dance company two years later. So I juggled universi, communi theatre and a dance company for four years. My mother joked that I majored in extra-curricular activi-ties. Instagram @davidandrewreid.

JADE REPETA CorpsSHAW 2022: Chitra and Damn Yankees; 1st sea-son. I am so thrilled to be here at the Shaw Festi-val! I began my performing career in Winnipeg, my dear and chilly hometown. In fact, there are quite a few of us Winnipeggers here in the 2022 Shaw season, which makes me very proud! I have since graduated from theatre school and have been working in the Canadian theatre industry for over fi¡een years. I am so thank-ful for the many people in my life that have encouraged and supported me in my pursuit of this incredibly odd and wonderful job that I am so grateful to do.

ADAM SERGISON CorpsSHAW 2022: Chitra and Damn Yankees; 3rd season. At two years old, I attended a showcase for my sister’s dance class. Surrounded by

beaming parents, I was bored out of my mind. Fortunately, even at the age of three, my sister was intuitive. When the students were sent to fetch their mothers for an impromptu mother-daughter dance par, she grabbed me instead. And there it was – I was bored because I needed to move. Sitting still never suited me, and nothing has changed. Now I make my living gallivanting around the stage, and the best part is if I can inspire that same feeling in you. I hope you will also find the joy in movement.

GABRIELLA SUNDAR SINGH ChitraSHAW 2022: Chitra and  e Importance of Being Earnest; 5th season. My mother was a dancer growing up and has always shared her love of story-telling through dance with me and my sister. When I was four, she introduced me to Bharathanaam, a form of drama-dance from the south of India. It is a highly expressive and epic art form, and I have loved learning how to translate what I know to my work in theatre. I was fourteen years old when I performed in my first musical, as a dancer in Crazy for You, and it finally all clicked: my training, my love for performing, and the spaces that I knew I felt at home in. It’s my dream to inspire other young artists by helping to create and maintain those spaces.

SANJAY TALWAR MadanaSHAW 2022: Appearing in Chitra and  e Doctor’s Dilemma; director for Too True To Be Good; 8th season. I was inspired to pursue professional acting by a professor in universi, who asked me if I was interested in auditioning for the acting pro-gram there. I was majoring in another subject and taking her theatre course as an elective. I was interested and, sensing I needed a push, she told me I’d fail her course if I didn’t at least apply for an audition. I thought it was a nice compliment…until I got my marks and saw the “F”. I applied for an audition the next day, and three years later completed the program and began a journey that has led to the Shaw Festival.

TAURIAN TEELUCKSINGH VasantaSHAW 2022: Chitra and Damn Yankees; 1st season. Hello! My name is Taurian (think Taurus and Ian combined) and I’m a Trinidadian-Canadian artist, born and raised in Brampton, Ontario. Introduced to the arts at a young age, my childhood was as wild as my imagination – f illed with piano lessons, dancing and singing. I was definitely not a quiet kid! I was fortunate to frequent plays and musicals with my family, and ever since hearing the overture to Phantom, I’ve been hooked! My work as an actor is fuelled by my need to connect with others. eatre to me is the epitome of artistic prowess; it commands and demands attention. Besides, who doesn’t like playing pretend?

BEATRICE CAMPBELL Stage ManagerSHAW 2022: Stage manager for Chitra and Damn Yankees; 18th season. One of my most memorable work/life experiences at the Shaw Festival, was working with my brother, Bene-dict Campbell, and sister-in-law, Jackie Max-well, on  e Entertainer. e cast was stellar all-around; but having the privilege of watching Ben play that part, will stay with me forever.

ANNIE McWHINNIE Assistant Stage ManagerSHAW 2022: Assistant stage manager for Chitra and Damn Yankees; 14th season. Growing up just north of Toronto, I started stage managing through a co-op program in high school. My most influential training came from the many talented stage managers I apprenticed under, some of whom I’m lucky to continue to work with here at e Shaw. I have enjoyed working on many of the produc-tions throughout my fourteen sea-sons at the Shaw Festival. Some of my favourites include Sunday in the Park with George, Maria Severa and Cabaret.

We live in a country with a rich and deep appreciation for arts and culture, and we’re committed to fund programs that enable Canadians of all means and backgrounds to enjoy the very best.

Hats off to 60 seasons of great theatre.

And Friends like YOU!Thank you, Friends, for helping us to achieve this milestone through critical on-going support – accounting for more than 30% of funds needed to present each season. YOU help bring plays to life, support artists, and find new ways to connect through online and in-person activities.
