With eight runners on theteam, the numbers are not quitewhere Ben Logan boys crosscountry coach Kevin Butlerwould like them. But he feelsgood about the quality of thesquad he has this fall.

“We don’t have a lot of guys, but the first four are prettystrong and we are looking forthat fifth guy to step up,” saidButler. “If we can find that fifthguy to get close to that first four,we can surprise some people.”

The Raiders finished secondin the Central BuckeyeConference Mad River divisionlast year, but they graduated the

league runner of the year inBryson Tipton. They also loststandout Landon Wenger.

There is talent waiting in thewings, though. Senior Noland Kingand juniors Blake Rhoades andTucker Munz were second-teamall-league runners last season.

“Noland put in some seriousmiles over the summer andBlake had a good summer, too,”said Butler.

Butler also has high expecta-tions for junior TayteWilliamson, who is new to crosscountry but had success in trackand field last season.

“Tayte has not run cross

country before, but he is goingto be really good,” said Butler.“Tucker is going to be very goodas well.”

Rhoades, Munz, King andWilliamson are expected to bethe Raiders’ top four runners.Competing for the fifth spot willbe senior Montgomery Smith, sophomore Andy Hughes andfreshmen Yale Scheiderer andParker Osborn.

“I think we can be in the topthree to five in every meet we goto,” said Butler. “That’s a realis-tic goal for us. I also want tocompete for a league title andget a guy to the regionals.”

“We are very excited for thisseason,” said head coach TiannHarner. “The expectations arevery high. We placed seventh atstate last year and we want toplace higher this year. We haveadded some more challengingtournaments to our schedule tohelp prepare us for the big tour-naments at the end of the sea-son.”

The Raiders return every

golfer from the group that went10-0 in the Central BuckeyeConference Mad River divisiona year ago.

Senior Mailiis Simovart andsophomore Sydney Wessonshared the CBC Mad River divi-sion golfer of the year award lastfall and return to form a dynam-ic duo at the top of the Raiders’lineup.

and senior Gabrielle Schmidtwas a special mention selection.

Also back for the Raiders aresophomores Taylor Lafferty andOlivia Titus.

The Raiders are not restingon their laurels after last year’smemorable season. Harner saidthey have worked even harderin the off-season to build onwhat they accomplished in2018.

“The amount of work theyhave put in since the end of theseason is much greater than it waslast year,” said Harner. “Theyhave put in a tremendous amountof time on the golf course.”

“The season is short so we needrapid improvement,” said headcoach Chris Conley. “This teamknows they have the potential andI believe they will push each otherto improve. If we can learn to playthe course, and not let a bad holeget us down and improve the shortgame, pitching and putting, we willbe in good shape.

“We always make a goal to winour conference title, then place atsectionals to make it to districts.”

Ben Logan returns fourreturning letterwinners from ateam that finished in a tie forsecond place in the CentralBuckeye Conference Mad Riverdivision last year.

The Raiders will be paced byjunior standout Ethan Ricketts, who earned first-team all-league honors last season.

Also returning to the varsitysquad are senior Bryce Loomis, junior Trey Allen and sopho-more Jacob Mitchell. SeniorAlex Naragon, who lettered as afreshman, will also providesome experience to the squad.

The number five is an impor-tant one to the Benjamin Loganvarsity volleyball team this season.

The Raiders are chasing theirfifth straight Central BuckeyeConference Mad River divisionchampionship. They don’t wantto just stop there, either.

“We are striving for a fifthCBC title, but we want to domore,” said head coach AllisonReule. “Why can’t we be a FinalFour team, why not us? We wantto make a trip to Dayton inNovember. In order to do that,we will need to secure a CBCtitle, win a district champi-onship and win a regional title. These goals are high, but the

famous quote goes, ‘If you shootfor the moon and miss, you willbe among stars.’”

The Raiders are coming off a2018 season in which they went18-6 overall and 9-1 in the CBCMad River division.

They have four returning let-terwinners in senior Bailey Shope(middle/outside hitter), juniorsMolly Vance (middle/outside hit-ter), Kylie Frazier (setter/outsidehitter) and sophomore LynzeeCronkleton (setter/outside hitter).

Shope was a first-team all-CBC performer last year, whileVance and Frazier earned sec-ond-team honors.

“We will need our players with

varsity playing experience to stepup and be leaders and guide ourtalent,” said Reule. “They have toset our tone and expectations.”

Also in the mix for time withthe starting unit are juniorCorinne Herring (defensive spe-cialist/libero), sophomoresRyelle Gibson (middle/outsidehitter), Lily Makin (middle/out-side hitter) and Makenna LeVan(utility) and freshmen ElliotBailey (defensive specialist/out-side hitter), Lily Blackburn (util-ity) and Jillian Plikerd (defensivespecialist/libero).

While not a team with a lot ofheight this season, Reulebelieves the Raiders can take

advantage of their athleticismand smarts.

“This team is strategic andstarting to see the importance ofteamwork,” said the Ben Logancoach. “Because we lack overallheight, we have to play a littleharder and smarter. We feel likefor the first time in a while, wehave the depth to do this. We havemany players fighting for playingtime on the court. We could see adifferent lineup match-to-matchor even set-to-set. We still need toplay harder and once we figurethis out, this team can achievemany things. We are slowly learn-ing the energy it takes to win themomentum battle that occurs so

frequently in volleyball.”Ben Logan shared the Mad

River crown with North Union.Reule expects the Wildcats, alongwith a couple other squads, toprovide strong competition inthe title race this season.

“I don’t want to say that wehave dominated the CBC thelast few years, but we havecome out on top,” said Reule.“The target will be on our backall season. All the teams in ourdivision have improved, and forthe first time in four years, theCBC championship could be upin the air. North Union was ourtop competitor in the leaguelast season and they will betough to deal with again thisseason.

“Urbana has a lot of youngtalent and will put a tough teamon the court each night. IndianLake continues to improveevery year, looked good at ourMonday night summer league, and plays hard. It’s always abattle between Graham as it willbe again this season.Northwestern isn’t as strong asthey were in the past, but don’tcount them out.”

It’s not easy to replace your all-time leading goal scorer and yourall-time leading assist leader, butthat is the task facing BenjaminLogan’s boys soccer team afterlosing standouts George Kern andRylan Studebaker to graduation.

Kern scored 21 goals last sea-son, while Studebaker tallied 10assists as well as scoring 10 goals.

“We had a competitive seasonlast year, but we lost our number-one career scorer and our number-one career assist guy,” said headcoach Jamie Hughes. ‘We have toplay a little different style this sea-son. It is going to be more of ateam effort. It’s going to be morepossession and more passing.”

The Raiders went 7-7-3 overalland 4-4-2 in the CBC last season. In order to avoid a dropoff thisyear, Ben Logan is focused onplaying stout defense.

“We have a senior goalkeeper inJamie Gill and a senior center backin Henry Myers,” said Hughes.

“Those two are a pretty strong backtwo defensively. We are going tolean on those two guys.”

To make up for the scoringvoid created by the departuresof Kern and Studebaker, Hughesis looking to a host of players tocontribute.

“(Sophomore forwards)Blaine Worden and Caleb Eppare looking to step up,” saidHughes. “Caleb has great touchand great vision. We have chal-lenged him to score more. Hewill be a central figure in ourattack the next three years.

“(Junior forward) GavinGibson is super fast and is ableto move up the field and (juniorforward) Keaghan Stahler isanother guy we can move upand take advantage of hisspeed.”

Members of the Benjamin Logan girls varsity soccer team are, from the left, first row: Allie Henault, Nevaeh Cabot, Josie Davis, Reece Plikerd, Morgan Weber and ChloeGallagher; second row: Jennifer Naragon, Kaitlynn Simon, Rachel Mears, Rhea Harner and Emily Roth; third row: head coach Dave Evans, Sammie Lee, Delaney Wheeler,Emma Gradias, Kaycee Cook, Gretchen Wilber, Izzy Heater, Olivia Hall and assistant coach Dayna Goldstein; and fourth row: Madison Plikerd, Kerry Copenhaver, BrinlynTipton, Hailey Willis, Mary Bickham, McKenzee Roseburrough and Alanna Gibson. Not pictured are Dylan Harper and Sadie Shellenberger.

Throwing a lot of young girlsinto the fire for the first time,Benjamin Logan girls soccercoach Dave Evans expected it tobe a year of transition last season.

It was exactly what Evansenvisioned as the Raiders battledthe pains of their inexperience tofinish 4-12-1 overall and 1-9 inthe Central Buckeye Conference.

But with a more experiencedteam and a “change in attitude”this fall, the expectations aremuch higher for the Raiders.

“We had a really good summer,”said Evans. “We took 19 girls to theOhio Northern camp and the girlsare really hungry. I think we aregoing to be better across the board. We are a lot more athletic, we havea lot more depth and we are goingto be a better goal scoring team.”

The Raiders have 11 return-ing letterwinners back, led bythree all-league players.

Sophomore Jennifer Naragon(midfielder) was a first-team all-Central Buckeye Conference selec-tion last fall, junior Brinlyn Tipton(midfielder/defender) was a second-team pick and sophomore GretchenWilber (defender/midfielder) was aspecial mention selection.

Also returning to the varsityteam are senior Rachel Mears(midfielder/forward), juniorsJosie Davis (forward/midfield-er), Delaney Wheeler (defend-er), Emily Roth (midfielder) andOlivia Hall (midfielder) andsophomores Kerry Copenhaver(midfielder), Kaycee Cook (goalkeeper/midfielder), MadisonPlikerd (midfielder) and Izzy

Heater (defender/midfielder).Filling out the varsity squad are

junior Sadie Shellenberger (mid-fielder) and freshmen Rhea Harner(forward), Alanna Gibson (defend-er), McKenzee Roseburrough(midfielder) and Allie Henault(midfielder/goal keeper).

“We have a lot of girls thatdeserve to play,” said Evans.“The competitive level is goingto be much higher. The girls arepushing each other.”

Much of what the Raiders didlast year revolved around usingtheir athleticism. Now that they aremore seasoned, they are focusedon becoming more technical.

“We are really working on under-standing the game and learning thestrategy of it,” said Evans. “You cansee our growth in each game.”

Not pictured are Tori Miller and Charlotte Graham.

Dani Widmark exploded onthe local cross country scene asa freshman for Benjamin Loganlast season.

Widmark earned first-teamall-Central Buckeye Conferencehonors and earned a trip to thestate meet. In the spring, shehelped the 3,200-meter relayteam set a school record.

Widmark will look to buildon that early success this fall asshe leads a Raiders squad thatfinished third in the CBC MadRiver division a year ago.

“My hope is that our ath-letes will be willing to pushbeyond what they may think ispossible to make a good show-ing in the always competitiveCBC conference,” said headcoach Mike Coder. “Last sea-son, we placed third in the MadRiver division. We will have towork hard, but we hope toimprove on that finish. We willfocus on improving one work-out at a time as we progressthrough the season.”

Senior returning letterwin-ners Ryann Beascher andEmma Wenger are expected tobe key contributors for theRaiders.

“Ryann and Emma havebeen with the program sincemiddle school,” said Coder.“Both are dedicated to helpingthis team be successful. Ryannhas experience as both a crosscountry runner and distanceathlete in track and field. Sheknows what it takes to be suc-cessful and we hope she canhelp our young athletes to

understand the sport of crosscountry. Emma has been a suc-cessful athlete until injury side-lined her last season. She haschanged focus and now helpsthe team with statistics andwhatever else she can do to aidthe team. We are counting onboth of our seniors for leader-ship.”

Also returning to the varsityteam are junior Tori Miller andsophomore Charlotte Graham.

Newcomers to the squad aresophomore Kerry Copenhaver, who will be splitting her timewith the soccer team, and fresh-men Sarah Folk, KendraKennedy, Malori Barnes andBrooklyn Horner.

“Much of the success of ourteam will be determined byhow quickly our freshmenadjust to the training and stepinto their roles as varsity ath-letes,” said Coder. “They willnot have the luxury of takingtime to adjust to this level ofcompetition.”

While the Raiders are count-ing on quite a bit of youth tohelp bolster the veterans on theteam, Coder believes his squadhas what it takes to be success-ful.

“Even though this is a youngteam, it should be exciting towatch the progress as we movethrough the season,” he said.“Training together and pushingeach other should lead to theimprovement we are lookingfor. We need to stay injury freeand peak at the proper time ofthe season.”

Indian Lake’s boys soccerteam has a clear vision of what itwants to accomplish this season.

“Our main goal is to win theCBC Mad River division,” saidhead coach Chase Vance. “Wealso want to win 10 games, score 50 goals as a team and

score more than we concede.”The Lakers won just one

game last season (1-12-3 overall)and went winless in the CentralBuckeye Conference (0-7-3), butthat hasn’t deterred Vance or hisplayers from setting lofty goals.

Leading the charge toward

achieving those goals is seniorforward Ethan Pequignot. Hewas a first-team Central BuckeyeConference pick last season. Hefinished fifth in the league inscoring with 17 goals and 38offensive points. However, he isexpected to miss the start of the

season with an injury.Indian Lake has eight other

Darrick Curtis (forward/mid-fielder) and Derek Cline (mid-fielder/goal keeper) and sopho-more Reid Vance (midfielder).

“Ethan and Darrick will beguys we are expecting to leadthis season,” said Vance. “We’llalso be looking at Austin Tron,Alex Angles, Reid Vance andEthan Parker.”

The rest of the starting line-up includes senior CarterBurnside (defender) and fresh-men Brant Parsell (midfielder),Caiden Gauntt (midfielder/for-ward) and Gabe Shepherd (goalkeeper).

“I really like our experiencedcentral field and defense,” saidVance. “We are better at finish-ing opportunities toward thegoal and we are utilizing ourcentral field combination play. Ialso like our team speed andphysicality.”

The Lakers also return seniorTristan Aulds (midfielder) andsophomores Dallas Miller (mid-fielder/defender) and BraydenFlesher (defender).

Northwestern won the CBCMad River division last season.Vance feels that several teams inthe division are capable of win-ning this fall.

It has already been a seasonof twists and turns for IndianLake’s girls golf team this fall.

The Lakers have just threegolfers on this year’s squad.Originally, they were going tocompete with the boys team. Then, it was decided they wouldjoin Benjamin Logan’s girlsteam and follow their schedule.

Regardless of who the LadyLakers play with, they are look-ing to get better with the playersthey do have.

“We want to use this as abuilding year,” said first-yearhead coach Jill Stockmaster.“We want to work toward build-ing a full team for next season.Right now, I’m just looking forimprovement from the girls asthe season goes along.”

Freshman Regan Ross hasshown promise in the early goingfor Indian Lake this fall. Ross fin-ished third in the CentralBuckeye Conference Mad Riverdivision preseason tournament.

“Regan has prior golf experi-ence,” said Stockmaster. “She iscoming in as a strong golfer. Iexpect some big things from herthis year.”

Sophomore Kayla Cumminsis back after competing for theLakers last season and freshmanDestiny Crumley rounds out theteam.

“Kayla golfed last year and hasmade progress,” saidStockmaster. “Destiny is brandnew to golf. For the two of them,we are looking to get better strik-ing and building consistency.”

Indian Lake’s boys golf teamdid not have much to hang itshat on after a winless season inthe Central Buckeye Conferencelast fall.

However, the Lakers return asolid core of golfers to buildaround this season.

“My goal for the season is toimprove every day,” said headcoach Todd Dietz. “I expect theguys to come to the course everyday with great attitudes and awillingness to work. If we do thatit will be a successful season.”

Leading the way for theLakers this fall is sophomoreLane McPherson. He earnedsecond-team Central Buckeye

Conference honors as a fresh-man and has been the team’smost consistent golfer so far thisseason.

“So far our sophomore LaneMcPherson is off to a greatstart,” said Dietz. “Hopefully, hewill continue to build on thatsuccess and have a great year.”

Senior Matthew Risnerearned special mention all-CBChonors last season, while seniorColton Dugan and junior DylanRice are also returning letter-winners.

“The part that I am encouragedby the most is the effort they put inthese last couple of summers,”said Dietz. “The work they haveput in is going to pay off duringthe season. I love their effort andtheir desire to try to get better.”

Rounding out the varsityteam are juniors Josh Staley andDoug Bungard.

field,” said Levingston.Indian Lake will have to

account for a major blow to itsoffense as senior Kayla Richardsis out for the season with a kneeinjury. She was the Lakers’ lead-ing scorer the past two seasons, including 15 goals last year.

The Lakers still have plenty of

weapons at their disposal, though. Junior Ashlyn Shaner(midfielder) was a CBC first-teamselection last season, while seniorKristen Young (goal keeper) andjunior Raelyn Parsell (forward)were both second-team picks.Young led the CBC in saves with250 and Parsell tallied nine goals

and five assists a year ago.Sophomore Macie Robinson(midfieler/defender) was also aCBC special mention pick.

Other letterwinners back inthe lineup are seniors AlysonHuffman (midfielder) andMcKenzee Lewis (defender), jun-ior Sammie Swygart (defender)and sophomores Ella Shoffstall(midfielder) and Paige Kindle-Wyne (defender/midfielder).

Also expected to start arejunior Kyleigh Huffer (forward)and freshman Grace Pequignot(midfielder).

“We have returning captainsin Raelyn, Ashlyn and Kayla,” saidLevingston. “Raelyn is expectedto lead the offense. Ashlyn is awork horse at center midfield andreally holds the team together.”

Four other letterwinnersreturn in seniors Chloe Laing(midfield/defender) and HayliHamilton (defender), juniorNicolette Dague(midfielder/defender) and soph-omore Addy Angles (midfielder).

Big Orange girls poised for another state run

A talent rich roster has WestLiberty-Salem’s boys crosscountry team anxious to hit thecourse this fall.

The Tigers placed third at theregional meet and took 13th atthe Division III state meet lastseason. With nearly everyonereturning head coach MikeLouden is ready to see how wellhis team can improve from ayear ago.

“Expectations are extremelyhigh and for good reason,” saidLouden. “The senior leadershipand experience this summer hasbeen a huge benefit for the pro-gram. Couple the senior leader-ship with our extremely talentedunderclassmen, the healthycompetition from within, andthe recipe for success is there.

“On paper, this is the most tal-ented and deepest roster that I’vehad in my 14 years. I’ve had theprivilege of coaching many stateindividual qualifiers and teams, but this group has all the attrib-utes that are needed to do some-thing truly special this year.”

The Tigers return six of theirtop seven runners from lastyear’s team that qualified to theDivision III state meet, placedthird at regional, won a districtand an Ohio HeritageConference championship. However, WL-Salem faces a newlandscape in the postseason asit moves up to Division II.

“It definitely changes thingsup (for the postseason), but wecan’t wonder or think about whatcould’ve been had we remainedin Division III,” said Louden.“Instead, we’ve embraced beingin Division II and have set ourgoals accordingly with what willface. We remain optimistic thatwe can compete with anyone inthe state.”

Leading the Big Orange run-ners is sophomore standoutDylan Lauck, who placed 17that the state meet last season. Heis also the first freshman to everplace at the state meet in the 5kera, according to Louden.

“Expectations for Dylan this

season are naturally high com-ing off of such an historic sea-son last year,” said Louden.“Dylan has improved his disci-pline and maturity as a runnerand continues to run with greatconfidence. We expect Dylan tocompete for the top spot eachweek. He has a special gift andability and I’m grateful he’s apart of our program.”

Key runners back from lastyear’s state squad are seniorsNoah Smith and Cade Clerico, junior Hayden Kennedy andsophomore Tate Yoder.

Those five runners, alongwith senior Gavin Harrison andMechanicsburg transfer JoshSpinner, are expected to battlefor the top seven spots this fall.Spinner finished 33rd at region-al last season.

Other letterwinners back forthe Tigers are junior IanMaurice and sophomoresAyden Estep, Hayden Miller andAdam LaRoche. Rounding outthe team are freshmen OwenHarrison, Michael Jones andAndrew Kimball.

Before the postseason canbegin, Louden knows defendingtheir OHC championship willnot be easy this season.

“The OHC will be extremelychallenging this year,” said

Louden. “Similar to the past twoseasons, Greenon andCedarville will both be solid. Both teams return a lot of veter-ans and experience. The OHC iseasily one of the best confer-

ences in the state on the guys’side. Cedarville returns theirentire team that finished 14th atstate last year. Greenon returnstheir entire team that finishedfifth at regionals last year.”

Tiger boys move to D2, still eyeing state meet

It has been a highly success-ful stretch over the past fewyears for West Liberty-Salem’sgirls soccer program. The Tigershave won a handful of OhioHeritage Conference champi-onships and made several deepruns into the postseason tour-nament.

“Every year our goals remainsthe same,” said head coachAndy Cotrell. “We want to winthe OHC and a district title.”

WL-Salem finished 14-4-1overall last fall and won the

OHC North division with an 8-0-1 record. They also reachedthe district title game.

However, the Tigers didgraduate the program’s bestplayer in Gabby Hollar, who fin-ished her career with 99 goalsand was the Division III stateplayer of the year last season.

“We need to play more as aunit,” said Cotrell. “A lot oftimes last year we got caughtwatching Gabby play, and right-fully so, because she is fun towatch. We have a lot of kids who

Lady Tigers want to maintain recent success

With plenty of offensive anddefensive weapons back, WestLiberty-Salem’s boys soccerteam is ready to flex its experi-ence on the field this fall. TheTigers finished 13-3-1 overall lastseason and were Ohio HeritageConference runners-up at 5-1-1.

“I expect we will be competi-tive in every game we play withthe chance to win,” said headcoach Tim Wolfe. “I expect wewill improve as the season pro-gresses. I expect our players willbe versatile in that each shouldbe able to play at least two dif-ferent positions on the field.

“Our season goals are alwaysthat each player improves individ-ually as the season progresses, each player enjoys himself whileplaying soccer and that we con-tend for the OHC title. We will con-tinue to build depth and hope toremain healthy as injuries canheavily impact a season’s success.”

Spearheading the Tigers on thefield this season is senior Ian Wolfe(forward/midfielder), who earnedsecond-team all-Ohio honors lastfall. He was also named the OhioHeritage Conference player of theyear. He led the league in scoringwith 26 goals and seven assists.

Seniors Ethan Cole (mid-fielder) and Gavin Harrison(defender) both were OHC first-team selections. Cole was thirdin the OHC in offensive points, scoring 12 goals and 15 assists.Fellow seniors Levi Chapman(defender), Caleb Siegenthaler(midfielder) and Jack Eggleston(midfielder) all are expected tobe major contributors this fall.

“I will look to all six seniors tobe leaders,” said Wolfe. “All sixwill be important to our success. The current senior class is in themidst of the best three-year runfor our program having won 40matches so far. They have thechance to be the winningest

senior class ever by winning atleast 10 games this season.

“We have an experiencedjunior class with eight totalplayers, six of whom are in theirthird year in the program. Ourfour sophomores will play sig-nificant minutes too.”

The Tigers have several otherletterwinners coming back thisseason. That group includes jun-iors Lance Baldwin (midfielder),Luke Hudson (defender), MasonPowell (forward/midfielder) RyanMotzko (midfielder) and sopho-mores Owen Johnson (midfielder),Isaac Brown (defender) and LoganSaylor (goal keeper/defender).

“As a group, the players areintelligent and hardworking,” saidWolfe. “They are coachable andare good teammates to eachother. They are fun to be aroundand enjoy playing together. Manyof them are versatile and play atleast two positions. This versatilityis important as our team numbersare a little low this season at 20.”

Making up the rest of theteam are juniors Logan Campbell(goal keeper/defender), NoahCline (defender), Drew Hardwick(midfielder), Gavin Woodruff(defender), sophomore IsaacReames (midfielder) and fresh-men Logan Phillips (defender)and D.J. Yoder (midfielder).

Greenon won the OHC cham-pionship with a 6-1 mark. After asecond-place finish last year,Wolfe expects his team to be inthe thick of the league race.

“The OHC will again be verycompetitive,” said Wolfe. “Greenonand Fairbanks will be the strongest.Greeneview and SCC are formerstate champions and have a proudhistory. We will contend for theleague title. Greenon and Fairbankshave very strong returning playersthat play club soccer. This extraplay against top level competitionmakes them very good.”

Wolfe expectsanother strongsoccer campaign

West Liberty-Salem’s volley-ball team lost a chunk of itsstarting team from last season, but the Tigers have plenty ofeager players to take over.

After a 17-8 campaign thatsaw the Tigers go all the way tothe district semifinals, headcoach Annie Kauffman is expect-ing her new players to gain expe-rience and help achieve the goalsthe program has always set.

“Our goal has always been todevelop players and gain experi-ence,” said head coach AnnieKauffman. “We want to be com-petitive in the OHC and put our-selves in a good position cometournament time. We are work-ing on a ‘We Over Me’ mentalitythis preseason. We are youngwith a lot to learn.”

The Tigers lost four startersto graduation, but will besparked by standout senior AlexBurton (middle hitter). She ledthe team in kills with 391 andhad 316 digs. Burton earnedDistrict 9 and OHC first-teamhonors

“Alex will be relied up to leadthe team,” said Kauffman. “Shewill be relied on heavily to carrythe offense. She has reallyimproved her backrow gameand her defense. She played fora highly competitive club teamthis winter and that hard workwill pay off for her this season.”

Also a bright spot on theteam is sophomore GabbyWilliams (setter), who receivedOHC honorable mention lastseason. Other letterwinnersback are senior Sydnee Payer(outside hitter) and juniorSelena Weaver (middle hitter).

“Sydnee is a four-year varsity

player,” said Kauffman. “Selenahas been injured in preseason, but we hope to have her backblocking for us. Gabby is run-ning our offense and is our set-ter. She is working really wellwith the hitters. She is scrappyon defense and that will benefitus.”

Making up the rest of thevarsity team are juniors JaelenMeeker (defensive specialist),Kaleigh Wilcox (defensive spe-cialist), Emily Bolton (defensivespecialist) and sophomoresMichele Smith (outside hitter),Aleah Reed (setter) and AllyGaver (defensive specialist).

“I really like the work ethic ofthese girls,” said Kauffman.“They can identify our weak-nesses and they are willing toput in the work to improve. Welack varsity experience, but Ican guarantee you we are work-ing hard every day at practice. We have been competitive inour summer tournaments andin preseason. We are currentlyworking on being mentallytough.”

Fairbanks has won the OHCNorth division the past two sea-sons. The Panthers were perfect

last year at 16-0 in the league.WL-Salem finished runner-upwith a respectable 12-4 mark.

“The OHC is very competi-tive,” said Kauffman. “Fairbanksand Springfield Catholic Centralalways have good teams.Mechanicsburg is a rival of oursand we always get pretty excitedfor that match. Even with ouryouth, we always hope to be atthe top. We have finished behindFairbanks the last two years.”

Best of luck to all area schools,HAVE A GREAT SEASON!!

Members of the Bellefontaine varsity volleyball team are, from the left, front row: Ari Núñez, Maddi Jackson, Sarah Starkey, Lily Palmer and Brielle Shultz; and back row:assistant coach Ric Prine, Katie Pool, Mullaney Yoder, Olivia Ullom, Hannah Rader, Caitlin Hutchins and head coach Bri Frazier.

Bri Frazier has her work cutour for her as she takes over theBellefontaine volleyball teamthis fall.

Frazier, a former standout atBenjamin Logan, hopes to ener-gize a Chieftain program thathas won just three matches intwo years.

“It has been a great transi-tion,” said Frazier. “With thehelp of previous coaches and thestaff at Bellefontaine, they allhave made it very easy for me.”

Frazier said her players havebeen working on the fundamen-tals in an effort to see betterresults on the court.

“We need to work on thesmall things in the game of vol-leyball,” she said. “Moving ourfeet to the ball and finishing

those long rallies will give us themomentum we need to wingames.”

The Chiefs will build arounda group of six returning letter-winners: seniors MullaneyYoder (middle/outside hitter),Hannah Rader (middle/outsidehitter) and Maddi Jackson(libero/defensive specialist),juniors Ari Nunez (libero/defen-sive specialist) and CaitlinHutchins (outside hitter) andsophomore Katie Pool(setter/outside hitter).

“I am looking at my threeseniors, Laney, Hannah andMaddi, for leadership and tolead the team in their skills,”said Frazier.

Bellefontaine’s boys soccerteam won its first CentralBuckeye Conference champi-onship last season, went 12-6-2and earned a berth in theDivision II district championshipgame. Despite losing a lot of tal-ented players from that squad, the 2019 Chiefs are poised to turnin a similar campaign this fall.

“We have three players backthat were all-CBC players lastseason,” said head coach SteveHenry. “We have quite a bit ofskill on this team. These guysare up to the challenge to matchwhat the team did last year.”

Bellefontaine graduated 10seniors, including all-time lead-ing goal scorer Daunte George.

However, the cupboard is farfrom bare. The Chiefs return

seven returning letterwinners.Seniors Jacob Shell (forward)

and Nate Hecker (midfielder)were first-team all-CBC pickslast year, while senior JacksonStrzalka (defender) and juniorRyan Johnson (goalkeeper) weresecond-team selections.

Also returning to the varsityteam are seniors Preston Henry(defender), Nathaniel Schmid(midfielder) and junior IsaiahHenry.

Henry also is looking for con-tributions from a group of new-comers that includes seniorsMatthew Childs (midfielder)and Christian Keene (defender),juniors Kobe Brown (defender),Ryan Carman (midfielder),Donovan George (defender),Cam Kline (defender) and

Quinten Neer (midfielder),sophomores Beau Salyer (mid-fielder) and Keaton Stachler(midfielder) and freshmanDakota Shell (forward).

Replacing the 18 goalsGeorge scored last year will notbe an easy task, but Henrybelieves his team has the talentas a whole to fill that void.

“It is going to be more bycommittee as far as our goalscoring,” said Henry. “We havesome dangerous attackers. It isgoing to take three or four guysthat are going to have to sharethe load after losing Daunte.”

Good team chemistry andversatility look to be strengthsfor the Chiefs this fall.

A very young and inexperi-enced Bellefontaine girls tennisteam mustered just three wins ayear ago. But with a year of experi-ence under their belts, head coachJim Stein believes his squad canmake a big leap this fall.

The Chiefs lost just one play-er from their varsity lineup ayear ago.

“It was a team last year that Iwas really pleased with theirimprovement from the start ofthe season until the end,” saidStein. “They came a long way.Hopefully, they can build onthat. If we can make the type ofimprovement we did last year

we will be in good shape.”Sophomore Courtney Sims

returns to the first singles spotfor the Chiefs, with juniorSamantha Starkey at secondsingles.

Senior Na Lin will likely seetime at third singles as well assome doubles action.

Also returning to the varsityteam, and expected to fill thetwo doubles groups, are sopho-more Mia Neer, juniors MengWang and Gracie Middaugh andsenior Taryn Mullins.

Rounding out the squad arefreshmen Leanna Brown andMadison Williams.

One area the Chiefs arefocusing on getting better at thisseason is closing out matches.

“We have to take that nextstep,” said Stein. “It’s importantthat we close out matchesstronger this year.”

Stein expects the CentralBuckeye Conference scheduleto be challenging this fall as alot of strong players return.

“Kenton Ridge and JonathanAlder were the co-championslast year and they have a goodamount back,” said Stein.“Northwestern picked up a pret-ty good freshman, so they willbe right in there again, too.”

Brooke McClellan is lookingto cap a stellar cross countrycareer for Bellefontaine by tak-ing the next step this fall.

McClellan was a first-teamall-Central BuckeyeConference runner last yearand qualified to the regionalmeet. The goal for her seniorseason is to get to the big stageof the state meet.

“For Brooke, I would like tosee her get back into the 19-minute range,” said first-yearBHS head coach Bob Core. “Sheran in those times earlier in hercareer and I think she can getback there. That would give herthe opportunity to get to state.”

McClellan finished eighth in

the CBC Kenton Trail divisionmeet last season and was 26th atthe regional race. She will carrythe load for a Chieftain teamsmall on numbers and experi-ence.

“We only have seven run-ners, but the girls are all verydedicated and I think they havea shot to make some noise,”said Core.

In addition to McClellan, theChiefs have two other returningletterwinners in seniorsCheyenne Shade and Nisha Patel.

Core is also looking forstrong contributions from fresh-men Morgan Johns, MontannaBuck, Sophie Adelsberger andAubrey Hudson.

“I would like to see everygirl improve their timesthroughout the season and forthe freshman runners to gainsome confidence,” said Core.“I would also love to get out ofdistricts.”

While this is Core’s first yearas head coach of the high schoolteam, he spent many years inthe junior high program. Hebelieves that will help smoothout the transition process thisfall.

“The girls have been great,”he said. “I coached at the juniorhigh level for 13 years, so I knowmost of these girls. We have agood connection. The girls havebeen fantastic with me.”

The Chiefs had a solid show-ing last season, finishing third ina very competitive CentralBuckeye Conference Kenton

“We want to qualify to theDivision I regional and upsetJonathan Alder in the league,”said Davis. “Jonathan Alder is atop 10 team in the state and wewould like to be able to beatthem. We would also like to beatSpringfield Shawnee for the firsttime in a while.”

Smith said her team’s off-season work should result in abig payoff on the field this fall.

“The girls really hit theweight room hard,” she said.“They were in there all summer

and I think that will make a bigdifference. Our seniors did agood job setting an example forthe rest of the team by showingup every day.”

While the defense was solidfor the Chiefs for much of theseason a year ago, there is a focus

this year on scoring more goals.Bellefontaine averaged just twogoals per game last season.

“I would like to see us hit theback of the net more,” saidSmith. “We are focusing a littlemore on scoring goals. We havethe ability, we just have to do it.”

With a 12-9 record, the 2018season was the most successfulin many years for theRidgemont volleyball program.Despite losing some talentedplayers from that group, there isa high level of confidence foranother successful campaignthis fall.

“We had a lot of good winslast year,” said head coachDarcy Ruppright. “The girls areeager to take it to the next level.

“We lost a big group of sen-iors, but we have several upper-classmen that have quite a bit ofexperience with me. They knowwhat to expect.”

This year’s squad will lean ona group of four returning letter-winners: seniors Jennifer Jordan(middle hitter), Mekenzie Jolliff(setter) and Nadia Martino (set-ter/hitter) and junior NikkiFreshcorn (middle hitter).

“Jennifer Jordan andMekenzie Jolliff have reallystepped up and worked hard atgetting their timing down,” saidRuppright. “I am expecting a lotfrom them.”

Also competing for spots inthe starting lineup for theGophers are seniors JennaWhitaker (outside hitter),MaKynna Parthemore (outside

hitter), Madisen Jolliff (defen-sive specialist), Brooke Dilbone(defensive specialist) andRebecca Bash (outside hitter)and sophomores AmandaHowland (middle hitter), EmmaSmith (defensive specialist) andCallie Cromer (setter/hitter).

Early on, Ruppright has beenimpressed with the team’s serv-ing.

“I really think serving isgoing to be a strength for us thisseason,” she said. “Several girlshave worked on their jumpserve and I think that is going tobe a big benefit. Our communi-cation between our hitters andsetters has been good, too.”

The Gophers were 5-3 in theNorthwest Central Conferencea year ago. They hope to have

similar success this fall, butRuppright expects a lot ofstrong competition across theleague.

“I think a lot of us are goingto be battling for that top spot,”said the Ridgemont head coach.“Riverside has some good talentback and Lehman is alwayssolid. Elgin lost a lot, but theyare always a competitive team.”

Ridgemont wants to build on 2018 success

Ridgemont’s golf team is rely-ing on its three returning letter-winners to lead an otherwiseinexperienced squad this fall.

“Our goals for this year are tobe competitive in our matchesand for each golfer to improvetheir score from the first matchto last match,” said head coach

Returning to the varsity teamthis fall for the Gophers are sen-ior Gage Furer and juniorsCollin Wallace and HannahShoffner.

“Gage, Collin and Hannahhave the ability to play well andbe competitive in all theirmatches,” said Johnson. “With acouple of years’ experience ingolf I expect them to step uptheir game and improvethroughout the season as well asshow some leadership in help-

ing the new golfers to improve. Ihave already witnessed thesegolfers helping the new golferssince the season has started andI know this will continue.”

Sophomore Bradley Brown isalso expected to be a key con-tributor after getting some expe-rience as a freshman last year.

“I want to see Bradley stepup his game, and with a year ofexperience under his belt Ibelieve he will improve hisgame because he now has a bet-ter understanding of the gameand can now focus on his skillimprovement.”
