From the President

iN OuR 2007 Year Book i referred to the saying annus horribilis, a phrase that has been used many times by many people and means a horrible year. it was a phrase that was used to describe the 2005/2006

season of Manchester united and in response their Manager, Sir Alex Ferguson said that

“people can curl up and die in the face of disappointment but men of purpose and ambition do something about it.”

We head into season 2008 with a new coaching team led by Mark Harvey. Dean Wallis, Chris Scott, Michael Prior and Chris Bond, in his dual role as Assistant Coach and General Manager List Development, form what is now a very strong coaching team at Fremantle. We have added exciting young talent through the National Draft and saw that talent on show in the opening games of the season so far.

The club also made two important appointments within the football department. James Begley has joined the club as General Manager –

Leadership and Development and is working closely with the coaches and player group on the implementation of the club’s leadership programmes as well as working on development programmes with the entire staff group. Recently, Brad Lloyd has joined as National Recruiting Manager to take our talent identification and recruitment to the highest level.

The comprehensive reviews of our football operations at the end of last season have been acted upon and our club has assembled an experienced and dedicated coaching team and specialist staff to guide us forward.

Your club continues to be a strong and healthy one. Our membership staff have also been hard at work through the off season processing membership renewals as well as welcoming many new members to the club. We also enter 2008 with a record number of sponsors and corporate partners who, together with our members, demonstrates the tremendous loyalty for our club. That support is greatly appreciated.

Fremantle’s commitment to the AFL’s initiative for the development of our great game in South Africa proceeded to the next level earlier this year as 45 players, coaches, support staff and officials undertook a ten day tour

of South Africa. it was a fantastic experience for every individual who made the trip, to see and understand South African culture first-hand and appreciate the way of life, hardships and challenges ahead for the country and the people. The trip brought home how lucky we are to live in a great country like Australia.

Our pre-season has been solid and our players and coaches have been working hard and professionally in their preparations for the season we are about to enter. The pre-season also delivered a setback that is all too real and ever-present for football clubs. The knee injury to Paul Hasleby in the opening round of the NAB Cup brought his 2008 season to a far-too premature end. Paul had worked extremely hard, starting his pre-season training well before his team mates and was in great shape for the year ahead. Paul has the character, commitment and most importantly the support of everyone at the club to manage the lengthy rehabilitation process and be back ready to go in 2009.

The pre-season was a time for giving players an opportunity and for trying new things over the four weeks of the pre-season games program. We have seen all our new recruits make their first appearances for our club and show us that they will be great additions in 2008. As we all know it is about preparation for round one and the consistency necessary over the twenty two rounds of the home and away season. it is not the time of year to think about what the year ahead holds in store for us, though that is tempting us all. it is about all the hard work for round one and when that is done, looking to round two. i know that is the old cliché but every year it holds very true as we all know each week can throw new challenges in our path. it is how well we are prepared for those challenges that count. We have prepared well.

Thank you again for your continued loyal support in 2008.

Rick Hart, President

ANNIvERSARy CELEBRATIONS hIGhLIGhT OF 2008 WAFL SEASONSuBiACO AND East Perth will each wear heritage jumpers when they celebrate 100 years of football at Subiaco Oval.

The Medibank Stadium co-tenants will move home for one weekend when they take WAFL football back to Subiaco Oval on Saturday, 10 May to re-create the first football game played at the historic ground.

Season 2008 kicks off on Thursday, 20 March when reigning premier Subiaco heads to Fremantle Oval to take on South Fremantle.

There will be four key events taking place throughout the WAFL season to mark the anniversary of Subiaco Oval.

The major event is the clash between the Lions and the Royals.

The game will incorporate a gala Auskick day and will be preceded earlier in the week with the naming of the Subiaco Team-of-the-Century.

Completion of the Sandover Medal Walk on Haydn Bunton Drive in Subiaco will also take place, while the City of Subiaco will be organising a Subiaco Oval exhibition at their offices.

One of the other projects will be a special Children’s Wall. Primary school students Statewide will be invited to draw a picture of what football means to them and the best 100 will be made into a tile and placed in a designated area at Subiaco Oval.

The 100-year celebrations will be held on the same weekend as Community Football Weekend, which is the cornerstone around

which the AFL will form its 150-year celebrations.

On the weekend of 10 and 11 May the AFL and State football bodies would like all football enthusiasts around the country to visit their original community club.

Community football is the heart and soul of our game – in 2007 more than 600,000 people played Australian Football and many more coached, umpired, officiated, volunteered and supported our Australian game at all levels.

WAFL ON-LINEThis year the West Australian Football Commission has launched an exciting and informative website called WAFL Online.

Working in conjunction with the revamped WA Football website, www.waflonline.com.au is the

place to go for a complete WAFL online experience.

On there you will find results from every game played from 1900 to 2007 amongst myriad other statistical information.

The website is currently in phase one, with phase two to include all player game tallies and phase three to have complete team sheets from every game. The second and third phases will be on-going throughout season 2008.

So check out WAFL Online for plenty of stats, facts and information about the WAFL competition.

The wafootball.com.au website is still the one to go to for WA football news (from the WAFL, to the WAFC, umpiring, community, junior, senior, school and country football).

The club’s trip to South Africa was a fantastic experience for everyone – who could forget the faces of the thousands of children we saw, especially this youngster at the Cotlands HIV orphanage

Community Work RecognisedMiCHAEL JOHNSON’S outstanding work in our community and with local charities throughout 2007 saw him finish equal runner up in the AFL Community Leadership Award.

Michael, a Player Ambassador for club aligned charity Redkite, was nominated for the coveted award with the strong support of Redkite’s former WA Regional

Council President Michael Atkins.

While Michael took on the role as an Ambassador for Redkite in 2007 and will again be Ambassador in 2008, his association with the charity started well before he took on this official role with RedKite as he took it upon himself to visit some diehard Fremantle supporters undergoing cancer treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital in 2006.

As the RedKite Ambassador, Michael makes regular visits to the children’s

oncology wards and attends Redkite functions and events including Karaoke Days in the wards, the Redkite Family

Movie Day and the Redkite Corporate Quiz night where he delivered the sports round questions.

Fremantle Chief Executive Cameron Schwab said that while his four years at the club have been first class on the field, “Michael has proved himself a champion off the field”.

“At only 23 years of age, he is an outstanding

representative of the club not only with respect to the commitments required as a player but the contribution he makes and continues to make to the community in Western Australia.

Mr Atkins said it was with great enthusiasm that they recommended Michael for the award thanks to the work he had done with Redkite throughout 2007.

“We have been honoured to work with Michael this year through our association as one of two charities aligned with Fremantle,” Mr Atkins said.

“Michael has shown us that when a professional sportsman has the heart and the courage to make a difference, they can be the most inspirational role model to our younger generation.

“it was through this goodwill that he met nine year old cancer patient Jesse Trigwell and in March last year, Jesse was named the Number One Junior Ticket Holder of the Fremantle Football Club for the 2007 season.”

Mr Atkins said Jesse’s father Troy says Michael’s support has had a major influence on his son throughout his treatment.

“Troy said that Michael has encouraged Jesse to get back out on the football field and most importantly, remain positive throughout the journey of his illness,” he said.

The Heart Foundation of WA is Fremantle’s other club aligned charity in 2008.

ONE OF the most sought after items each year at the annual Carlton Mid Banquet Auction is the Almost Football Legends. Described as a money can’t buy opportunity to “take on the staff of the Fremantle Football Club” with an Assistant Coach leading “your own social or work colleagues in a modified game of mixed football”. in 2007, new gold level sponsor BigPond were the lucky bidders to take on the Fremantle staff in the Fremantle Almost Football Legends Cup. Assistant Coach Chris Scott worked with the BigPond team preparing them for the big game that took place

on Wednesday 20 January at Fremantle Oval. BigPond, wearing the white clash strip, took on the Fremantle staff team that included Assistant Coaches Steve Malaxos and Peter German, former AFL players and now staffers Daniel Bandy and Tony Godden, alongside our membership, sales, communications and merchandise staff. Several BigPond team members “enhanced” their playing uniforms with attractive fluro tights and headbands in an attempt to put the focused Fremantle team off their game. it was to no avail as the Fremantle staff ran out 24 point winners.

A PORTRAIT OF Fremantle captain painted by local artist Melinda Mackay was a stunning entry in this year’s prestigious Archibald Prize. Melinda showed Matthew her masterpiece on a visit to Fremantle Oval in February before its journey to Sydney to join the other entrants for final judging. Matthew was amazed at how incredibly lifelike the painting was saying “it’s ultra impressive, when I first saw it, and I know is sounds very cliché, but it was like looking in a mirror.” Melinda is a passionate Fremantle fan and Curtin University fine arts graduate, and Matthew’s portrait is her sixth entry in the prestigious award.

AT THiS YEAR’S team photo shoot, the club was pleased to announce that Marine and Civil Construction is the new sponsor of the club’s coaching team for the next two years.

Chief Executive Officer Cameron Schwab said that “it is terrific to have a Western Australian company of the standing of Marine and Civil who are based in Fremantle as a Diamond Level sponsor of our coaching team.”

“Marine and Civil are an innovative company that contribute in a very significant way to the development and growth of marine infrastructure in our state.”

“We have a new coaching team taking us into 2008 led by Senior Coach Mark Harvey and it is fantastic that they have received the significant support from such a proud Western Australian organisation as Marine and Civil.

“Marine and Civil were involved with our club as a sponsor in 2007 and to extend their commitment to us for the next two years to a Diamond Level sponsor is outstanding.

“Our coaching team will proudly carry the Marine and Civil brand with them throughout 2008 with

their logo appearing on all coach’s apparel,” said Mr Schwab.

Marine and Civil Managing Director Kay Giles said that “as a Western Australian company based in Fremantle, we are proud to support the Fremantle Football Club as sponsor of the coaching team.”

“Our partnership with Fremantle in 2007 showed the professional and focused way they pursue their goals,” Ms Giles said.

“We have been impressed by the commitment shown throughout every level of the club, and there is no group of individuals that better reflect that than the coaching team.”

“We are very pleased to be able to support Mark Harvey and his team for the next two years.”

Marine and Civil was founded in 1992 to specialise in marine infrastructure. Over the last 15 years the Company built the underwater Observatory in Busselton, the Artificial Surf Reef at Cable Beach, design and construction of Berth 1 Extension for the Port Hedland Port Authority, the iron ore load-out facility at Koolan island, the Graham Farmer Freeway bridge piling and the Narrows Bridge Duplication.

20Facing

After spending twelve years playing football in Melbourne, how did it feel on your first day walking into a new club?

i was nervous at first because it is such a big thing for me to come over to a new state and a new football club. i had been at Essendon for 12 years and that is pretty much all you know, so coming to into a new place with a new way of doing things is exciting, but nerve wracking at the same time. To the club’s credit they have been so welcoming. The boys have been so down to earth and are great, genuine people and i have pretty much fitted in straight away.

What was your perception of the club before you came to Fremantle?

i always knew Fremantle were a talented team. But what i didn’t know from the outside looking in was how professional and precise they are with their training and everything they do. They have got a lot of exceptionally talented players and the level of athleticism in the group and their fitness and abilities shown over pre-season has amazed me. There are also three or four guys who i think would probably be better than anyone i have ever seen, so it’s been amazing just to try and match myself up with them and have them drag me along.

Would you like to say who has impressed you most?

Des Headland has been amazing, just to watch him and the way he goes about it. i also like the footy brains of Jeff Farmer and Paul Hasleby. Ryan Crowley has impressed me with his ability to run and push himself and then there are blokes like Sandilands too. i mean i could just about mention everyone because i’ve been that impressed with the guys. i laugh sometimes at how lucky i am to come to a place like this with such good players, good coaching staff and just a great club all round.

How did you feel running out for Fremantle for the first time in the NAB Cup?

i will try and play it down but i really was, i wouldn’t say nervous, as i was really trying to deaden the nerves, but in doing that it burnt me out a little. Just with it being a late game, it made for a long day and i was just worn out at the end of the day from thinking about it. So, it was great to just get the first game out of the way and be part of a winning side, i really enjoyed it.

Have you noticed any changes in Mark Harvey since his time at Windy Hill?

it’s been amazing. At Essendon, he was always there for you, he always believed in you but now to see his personal skills come across with individuals and as a group, he’s blown me away with how good a coach he has become. i’m really excited just to play under him. He is the type of coach you would run through a brick wall for.

Season 2008 will see you don the number 17 jumper – how do you feel about the new number?

The way i rationalised it was that it’s the hard work of the past with the number 1 and the beginning of a new era with the number 7, so 17 works perfectly for me.

How do you feel about purple?

i’m getting used to it. When my friends give it to me about wearing purple, i tell them it’s the new black! it definitely does take some getting used to, but i must say i really like the white playing kit.

What do you think you bring to the club?

i’m passionate about what i do and i don’t think there is any time that anyone can doubt that i don’t give it all that i’ve got. i am a very good team man and i think that’s a good character trait to have at the club and a big reason why you can go a long way if you have got a lot of people who care and have a passion for it.

You have been noted for your leadership since joining Fremantle, have you always led by example?

i give everything to my team and i just love winning, i really do. i pretty much don’t do anything without wanting to be the best at it, wanting to be the quickest, wanting to jump the highest – its just inbuilt in me that i want to be the best i can be and when you are in a team all i want to do is be in a premiership – its not about best and fairest awards or anything like that, its how can i help get this team to a premiership.

Did it annoy you that people thought you and Jason Johnson were brothers?

it was frustrating more than it annoying as i actually do have a brother Jason but it is not the Jason that plays at the Essendon Football Club. However, my other brother is David Johnson who plays at Geelong, but we are no relation to Steve Johnson who also plays at Geelong. Now i am playing with Michael Johnson and the fact that we are both M Johnson can causes a few headaches. Basically, there are just too many Johnson’s!

Do you have a bit of anonymity here or have you been recognised?

its probably a bit less because Melbourne is completely footy mad but i don’t think i’ve seen it yet in its full glory over here in Perth. But one of the nicest things over here is that people have just welcomed me in the streets, welcoming me to Perth, welcoming me to Fremantle and asking me if i am loving it over here, and that sort of thing. i haven’t had one bad word said to me since i have been here, which has been sensational and just makes it all the better.

On the tail end of the pre-season campaign, how are you feeling?

The pre-season has been perfect for me. i’m always fairly fit but i think i am now the fittest i have ever been. The staff in the fitness area have been fantastic and a lot of the training i have done here at Fremantle, i hadn’t done at Essendon in the past. So all in all i’ve just gotten a lot better through a good mix of hard work and a good mix of recovery as well, which is good when you are getting on in years!

Have you set any goals for the year ahead?

i’m very much into goal setting but i haven’t really set any of a personal nature, my goals for this year are more around what i can do to play my part in a successful team.

What are your interests away from footy?

Just going down to the beach and relaxing with friends, good food and exercise and coming back and working hard at something. Working hard – that’s definitively a love of mine. Whether that be in the building trade or with my café, i know that my secret is, if you work hard, things happen and without that hard work i think it would be a pretty boring life.

Talking about your café, what is your signature dish?

As the owner, i leave things like that to the people who count and our chef Neil is in charge of that side of the business and i think his signature dish is his thai salmon, its just beautiful. However, if i was cooking at home to impress i would cook my salmon and capsicum wrap in filo pastry, with some veges and mashed sweet potatoes on the side.

Has your lifestyle changed since moving to Perth?

it has completely changed. i’m forced to work harder on the track and give training everything i possibly have, which is pretty much a given for me anyway, but off the training track i’ve got nothing to go into really. i think it is a really good thing for me because i can concentrate wholly and solely on football, which is how i get the best out of myself. i’m absolutely loving living here in Perth.

What is your favourite part about living in Perth?

Definitely the beaches! i am lucky enough to live in Cottesloe and just a stones throw away from the beach and to be able to jump in the ocean every night after a hard training session, its just God’s gift.

Can you elaborate on your ‘Mr Sunbury’ nickname?

i knew that was always going to come up! When i was fifteen i did a body building competition and i ended up winning it. unfortunately i was too young and too stupid to realise i might end up playing AFL football and that it would come back to bite me on the bum! But again it was the hard work and desire to win that i have always had, as i wasn’t going to enter into the competition without working hard and winning. Actually, i was probably the same size i am now, at fifteen, so i did it properly and they gave me the ‘Mr Junior Sunbury’ title.

Docker has also heard you have an interesting pet?

i’ve got a dog [pause…] and a pet python. But they are back in Melbourne getting looked after. My boxer is caller Kyzer, he is six years old and he is the best dog going around and Kostya, also six years old, is a 2 metre diamond python. i miss them.

Now for a quick snap shot: who is your favourite musician, what’s your favourite television show, and lucky last, what’s your favourite spot in Perth?

My favourite musician at the moment is Xavier Rudd, my tv show would have to be anything with Gordon Ramsay in it and my favourite spot, Cottesloe Beach of course!

After 194 games with Essendon, including a premiership in 2000 and a Best and Fairest medal in 2002, MARK JOhNSON has found a new home and a new energy at Fremantle.

F remantle is one of four AFL clubs allocated game development regions within South Africa. The club’s North

West Province currently has around 3,500 registered participants of Australian Rules football through the junior participation programme, FootyWild (South African equivalent to Auskick).

The players who made the trip were Paul Hasleby, Byron Schammer, Brett Peake, Matthew Carr, Clayton Hinkley, Des Headland, Antoni Grover, Ryan Crowley, David Mundy, Rhys Palmer, Chris Tarrant, Adam Campbell, Steven Dodd, Chris Mayne, Daniel Gilmore, Ryan Murphy, Kepler Bradley, Marcus Drum, Aaron Sandilands, Jeff Farmer, Garrick Ibbotson, Brent Connelly, Michael Johnson, Paul Duffield, Josh Head and Roger Hayden.

The team departed Perth International Airport on Sunday 27 January and after a twelve hour flight arrived in Johannesburg at 6:50pm that evening, staying overnight in Johannesburg before travelling the two and a half hours by bus to Potchefstroom in the heart of the North West Province, the team’s base for the next three days.

After arriving and checking into the local hotel, the team completed a conditioning and recovery session at the High Performance Institute of Sport followed by a reception held by the North West Provincial Government to officially welcome the club to South Africa and the province.

It was at this reception that the club announced Nkwe Platinum Limited as the club’s principle partner in the North West Province, together with other new partners Continental Capital Limited and

Air Mauritius who will join with Fremantle for its development activities in South Africa. Following the formalities of the official reception, a group of local dancers gave an impromptu performance for the players and coaches.

Tuesday brought an early morning visit to the Thakaneng Centre for street kids and, after a one hour visit with the children of the centre, the team then moved on for a tour through the Potchefstroom Regional Correctional Facility in what was truly an eye-opening, first-hand view of conditions inside this local medium/maximum security prison.

After lunch the players conducted a footy clinic with over 800 children in the Ikageng Township on the outskirts of Potchefstroom. The group then walked through the township to view living conditions and meet residents. A weights and recovery session at the High Performance Institute of Sport concluded what was a full day of activities.

Wednesday morning saw the coaches and strength and conditioning staff conduct an educational training and testing session with twenty local players before the players and coaches conducted another footy clinic at the nearby Promosa Township.

At 6:00pm the team held a full team training session at the Military Base fields and were joined by six selected local players who enjoyed their opportunity to train with the team while a group of local players watched training from the stands.

Thursday brought an end to the team’s stay in Potchefstroom with an early morning departure by bus for Johannesburg where the team was based

for the remaining days of the visit in the lead-up to the game in Pretoria. After settling into their Johannesburg hotel, the travelling party left for what could only be described as a very moving visit to Cotlands, an orphanage for HIV positive children in Turffontein. The centre receives no government assistance and, before leaving, the club and players made donations to the centre to assist their terrific work for these children. A two hour bus trip to Pretoria followed for the official reception for Fremantle, Carlton and distinguished guests at the Australian High Commission as a prelude to Saturday’s match.

The travelling party visited the Apartheid Museum early on Friday morning for an emotional experience viewing the exhibits and gaining understanding of the history of racial segregation in South Africa that was followed by a tour through Soweto. The team completed its training session at SuperSport Park, Pretoria at 6:30pm on Friday evening.

Saturday was game day and the team arrived at SuperSport Park at 5:30pm. A strong performance by the young team delivered a 14 point win that was followed by unique post match celebrations that saw a performance by a Zulu choir, presentations to the players by the children from Cotlands and the players joining the children in the crowd for a farewell to South Africa.

Sunday brought a well earned rest day at Sun City and a twilight safari through Pilansberg nature reserve before a lunch time departure for the three hour bus ride back to Johannesburg for the return nine hour flight back to Perth.

Fremantle travelled to South Africa in January this year for a once in a lifetime experience. The 25 players and 19 coaches, support staff and officials undertook a ten day trip that included a range of community and football development activities in the North West Province culminating in an exhibition game against Carlton at SuperSport Park in Pretoria on 2 February.

A Quick Kick

You have represented WA in two other sports aside from football, can you tell Docker about that?

As a youngster i was playing football during winter and in summer i was playing baseball. i started off with Tee-Ball and went through the ranks before playing with South Perth Baseball Club. i played a few years with them before getting the opportunity to represent WA in the national championships in Alice Springs when i was 14. i also did karate from when i was six years old and continued with that for about 10 years or so. i have my black belt and i represented WA a few times from when i was 12 to 15.

The U18 Championship was a very successful one for you personally, was that rewarding?

Obviously the most important thing was to win the carnival, that was my goal from the outset, and to play some good footy along the way so we could achieve that goal. To win those awards was a huge bonus but it wasn’t something i aimed for – my primary goal was to play as well as i could to help WA win the Championships.

You were also named in the All-Australian Under-18 Team, a huge honour considering the level of competition you played against?

it was a real honour to be a part of that team. To see the other guys named in the team and how good they are was just such a privilege and a very humbling achievement.

How was your experience at the AFL Draft Camp?

it was very physically demanding. We had a long season with the National Championships and a full season of league football, so to have the Draft Camp after all of that it was quite demanding. You have to maintain your fitness all the way through between the end of the WAFL season and the Draft Camp to make sure you are as physically prepared as possible. it was also mentally demanding but all you had to do was be yourself and it made a huge difference.

Draft day is always a nerve wracking day but your experience was extra nerve wracking. What happened?

i had all my friends and family around to watch the draft. We had the computer hooked up to the TV and after pick 3 the internet froze and no one knew what was going on or if i had been

picked up. We got a phone call and someone said i had been picked up by Essendon so the house went a bit quiet but once the computer refreshed and we all saw my name next to Fremantle’s first pick we all jumped up and started screaming.

What are your expectations this year?

i’m not expecting too much game wise. At every training session i want to train my hardest and play some good footy down at East Fremantle and, hopefully, get one or two games. i want to focus on training hard and continuing with my development.

What are you looking forward to the most in 2008?

i’m looking forward to everything i’m going to learn. You learn a great deal from all the boys around you and they have been pretty helpful in teaching the new guys what it is all about. The senior players have really instilled in us just how hard you have to work and how demanding it is being an AFL footballer.

What was your first week at the club like?

it was pretty full on. We were meeting so many new faces and all the players we had watched on TV since we were kids. We had a lot of meetings with the leadership group and other staff to help us get a more thorough understanding of Fremantle and of what to expect over the pre-season and beyond.

You were part of the playing squad that went to South Africa. How was that experience?

it was an amazing trip. To see the things that we saw made me realise how lucky i am to live in WA and how easy we have got things compared to some sections of the population in South Africa. it was good to also play my first game over there.

What do you do away from football?

i have a really close group of mates so we are always hanging out. We go down south sometimes and go skiing and wakeboarding.

Who have been your biggest influences in football?

My Mum and Dad have always been there for me and have made sure i’ve kept my feet on the ground as i’ve gone through the ranks. They congratulate me when i have had a good game but always make sure i don’t get a big head.

Which players have helped you the most?

i’ve gotten pretty close to Paul Hasleby and Byron Schammer since i have been here. They have given me good advice on how to go about things and prepare for training and playing.

Fremantle’s first round selection (No. 7 overall) at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft brought East Fremantle product RhyS PALMER to the club. he was a stand out performer at the 2007 NAB AFL Under 18 Carnival which saw him finish runner-up in the Larke Medal, named WA’s Most valuable Player and earn selection in the All-Australian Under-18 Team.

You have a bit of a reputation for enjoying a sing. Where did that love of music come from?

Growing up i used to listen to Dad’s music and i enjoyed the older time stuff. it kind of grew on me over the years and i can be heard having a sing in the change rooms or the shower.

Do you have any preferred songs?

i don’t mind singing a bit of Johnny Farnham or Roy Orbison. i like to think i’m a pretty good singer but the people who listen to me might think otherwise.

At Essendon one of your nicknames was Peter Hore, referring to the serial pest who has interrupted numerous major Australian sporting events. How did you earn that nickname?

Back at Essendon i mucked around a bit playing a few jokes on the boys. As the years went on i found myself doing it a little more regularly. it was all good harmless fun.

What is the best gag you have done to a team mate?

i grabbed Lachie McKinnon’s car before a big training session and put it in the middle of the oval so when he walked out there he was at a loss as to why his car was parked in the centre square.

What were the thoughts when Essendon delisted you?

i didn’t know what else i would be doing if i wasn’t playing footy. it was a bit of a shock and it really does bring you back down to earth so i am really grateful for the chance Fremantle has given me. it was certainly a couple of weeks i’d rather forget.

How about when you were invited to train with Fremantle during the pre-season?

i always wanted to come back home and all through trade week there was talk of trying to get me home but Essendon couldn’t quite get the right trade. When Mark Harvey invited me down to train i was rapt and then to get picked up, i was over the moon. There is no place like home.

What changes have you noticed in Mark Harvey since his time at Essendon?

Having not been under his coaching since he left Essendon, it didn’t take long to remember how switched on he is. it is amazing when he talks, all the players listen in 100 per cent and what he has to say is spot on. He has got respect from everyone.

After four months, what have been your impressions of the club?

i love the varied training regime. The coaching and fitness staff build individual programs for every player to suit each player’s needs from a development point of view, it is a very focused program. i was used to everyone doing all-in sessions all the time but i think the way we have it set up at Fremantle will help us out because it pays attention to areas that can be improved on individually as well as a team. That will be a benefit for us.

What do you bring to the club?

i am happy to fill any role that i am assigned but i have to admit i like kicking a few goals and having a run on the wing. With my height i would like to think i will be able to help out in the ruck when i’m needed.

Which member of the playing group has surprised you the most?

Daniel Gilmore goes 100 per cent in all of his training. Even when it’s as boring as sitting on the bike he goes hell for leather and he takes it out onto the track as well. He works really hard and it rubs off on the other blokes as well which is great.

What are some of the advantages of being back in WA?

Time away from footy is much better because you have your friends and family around. When i was in Melbourne i didn’t really know anyone apart from the guys from Essendon so being around footy all the time wasn’t necessarily beneficial. Being back here with friends and family breaks it up a bit and is a big help.

What sort of a player would you say you are?

i have pretty good fitness under my belt and with my height i like being able to slot into any role i am needed to fill. i like playing on the wing or half forward flank because i can run all day but ultimately i’ll go where the coaches put me and that suits me fine.

How hard was the adjustment trying to being a defender over the past couple of years?

When i went to Essendon i was 89kg and was a wing, half forward flanker for West Perth. i put on six or seven kilos in the first year and then another five kilos the year after that and i turned from 89kg to 105kg and playing on Barry Hall. i was there for two years doing that before playing mostly as a forward last year for Bendigo, which was better.

Who has been of most assistance to you since you joined Fremantle?

Dean Solomon. He has taken me under his wing and really helped me adjust to the change. it is much easier to settle in with blokes like Dean around helping out.

What was the best thing about your recent trip to South Africa with the team?

it was fantastic. We went to an orphanage for HiV children and all the kids lived and did their schooling there. When we walked through the door it was amazing to see their faces change and to see how excited they were to see us. We

had a kick with them and they were just over the moon. i thought they would have looked at us and thought, ‘Who are you?’ but they were rapt to see us and the players got a lot out of it which was fantastic.

The most eye-opening part of the trip?

We drove through a lot of poor areas so seeing how people lived was confronting. The houses weren’t much more than four posts holding up some sheet metal for a roof. The amazing thing was that even though these people have next to nothing they were always smiling.

What goals have you set yourself for 2008?

i want to play consistent WAFL and AFL footy and improve as much as possible on last year. The way the team is set up this year, if you do the hard work you will get rewarded and all the boys will be pushing each other. That’s the way it should be.

You played in the International Rules series in 2006. What was that experience like?

i was pretty surprised when Kevin Sheedy called me up telling me i was in the squad. i’d had an alright year that year so to get a game and play with the better players of the competition was unbelievable. You get to see how good they are and how fit they are. i played at Subiaco Oval in front of my home crowd and we won by a world record margin so it was fantastic.

You managed to take out the Bendigo Bombers 2007 Best and Fairest and lead the goal kicking despite playing just 15 games. Were you a bit surprised when you picked up those awards?

it was a bit of a surprise. When i got the phone call from (Bendigo Coach) Matthew Knights telling me i had won the goal kicking and the best and fairest it was a bit of a sweet and sour thing. i didn’t really want to win it (best and fairest) because it meant i spent too much time playing in the VFL but to get that award from playing in just 15 games was great.

People describe you as quite a versatile player for your height. Has that always been something that has helped you in your game?

i think it is an advantage when it comes to selection but sometimes it can work against you when you play anywhere between three, four, five or six positions in four quarters. it makes it hard to get into the flow of the game sometimes when you are constantly getting moved around but it also tests you as a player and forces you to adapt quickly which is a bonus. You can never have too many strings to your bow in the AFL and i have been fortunate to have filled so many positions and roles in my career so far. i think it helps you grow as a player.

A Quick Kick

Fremantle’s second selection (No. 24 overall) at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft delivered North Ballarat’s Captain CLAyTON hINKLEy to the club after representing victoria Country in the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships. A speedster, Clayton recorded a 20m sprint time of 2.88sec at the NAB AFL Draft Camp, as well as 8.07sec for the agility test, ranking him in the top three per cent of participants. An agile and versatile midfielder, Clayton is versatile as a forward or running defender.

DOB: 21 February 1989 height: 186cm

Weight: 72kg

Drafted: North Ballarat U18

Tell us a bit about where you come from?

i’m from a pretty big farm in Warracknabeal in Victoria, it is about four hours north west of Melbourne. it is a pretty big cereal farming area. Most of the farms out there have wheat, barley and canola crops as well as sheep.

Did you ever have plans to be a farmer?

i guess when i was younger i was pretty keen on the farm. i still do love the outback and the freedom it has but i was never really going to become a farmer i think. i always loved footy and was going to try to pursue footy but if that hadn’t worked out i probably would have gone into building or construction.

Did you play your part on the farm?

My older brother and i didn’t really have too many chores aside from feeding the dogs every night so we were pretty lucky in that respect. We eventually got into a roster where he did it one night and i did it the next night but we always ended up getting into fights over whose turn it was. We have three kelpies and a greyhound.

How have you found the move from rural Victoria to Fremantle?

i have loved it. it is great being over here. i love going to the beach and there are some of the best beaches in Australia here so that is one of the best parts of the move aside from being at the club. When i was living in Warracknabeal we would only get to the beach on holidays mid-year and around Christmas so from that aspect it has been great.

What was your initial reaction when you heard you were

coming to Fremantle?

i was pretty stoked at the start but then when reality kicked in that i had to come across to the other side of the country it kind of hit home with mum and dad a bit but i was always really excited about the opportunity. The club has also set me up really well over here with a host family so that made the transition a lot smoother.

What were your thoughts on your first pre-season?

it has been very professional since the moment i got here. Every little thing has been highlighted and the intensity has been very high. Being in our first season we recruits have had a workload that is not as high as some of the other players but we have certainly been made to work hard so it has been really beneficial for us in the lead up to the season.

One of your attributes is your pace. Do you have any experience in athletics?

When i was younger during primary school and at the start of high school i did athletics training camps at the Debbie Flintoff-King Gold Camp. i did that for a few years in a row but beyond school athletics carnivals i didn’t really progress much further with it. My pace developed through primary school and got helped along through the training camps and i was lucky enough to maintain it to the level it’s at now.

You were captain of North Ballarat last season. What was it like having that responsibility?

it was really good and i thoroughly enjoyed it. i was pretty honoured to be Captain. i tried not to let it affect my footy too much but at the same time it was quite a responsibility and one that i think really helped my development.

How did you find the Draft Camp?

Physically and mentally it was draining. Knowing you had meetings throughout the day really took it out of you immensely and you felt it when you did tests. it was a pretty tough five days and once we finished it was bliss. The body was pretty sore after it and i was exhausted so it was good to be able to get some solid hours in bed when i got home.

What the type of player are you?

i would say i’m a running type player. i’ve spent most of my time in footy as a running wingman and i occasionally go forward. i don’t mind kicking a goal when i get the opportunity. in under 18s and junior footy i played defence a bit but i was never pushed back too deep.

Which of your new team-mates have you learned the most from since joining the club?

i would have to say just by watching and taking in little bits and pieces it would be the Carr boys and Mark Johnson. The way Mark has come into a new club and the way he trains as hard as he has been as well as the way he goes about things has been terrific to learn from.

Is being part of an AFL club everything you expected it would be?

i have had a few mates and family friends go through the system already so they gave me a bit of an insight into how it was going to be. it is very professional and very intense at Fremantle so that has been a huge plus. One of the bigger things that has stood out since i came across is the nutritional side of things and how just simple dietary habits can have an affect on your recovery and preparation.

A Quick Kick

You have a pretty successful history as a junior WACA Grade cricketer. What type of player were you?

i was an all rounder. i bowled first change or got given the new ball and batted around number five or six. i was given the ball later in the innings when the game needed to be slowed down and i didn’t mind having a swing late in an innings when we needed runs quickly.

You also represented WA in age championships. What was that like?

Going on tour with the WA Schoolboy sides have given me some of the best experiences i have had in sport. i went on tour with the 15s Schoolboys, two 17s Schoolboy tours and i was in the 18s as well. All the guys i played with have gone on to play A Grade cricket so we had some pretty good sides. You develop such a bond with all the guys on these tours and we still keep in touch and catch up regularly.

Who has been your biggest scalp on the cricket field?

i managed to get Michael Hussey out in a practice match when the State 17s played Wanneroo. it was only a scratch match and part of a training session but i’ll claim it because he is just such a champion. When i was younger i got to bowl to the Australian team in the nets when they came across for a Test at the WACA and i managed to send down a few deliveries that Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting edged behind as well.

Was it a tough decision to give cricket up to concentrate on football?

At one stage when i was growing up cricket was my life but some part of me tended to get bored with cricket, particularly when i was injured. When i couldn’t bowl because i was injured and then had to stand in the field for 92 overs it

was really hard for me to stay interested because i missed being involved. i love cricket but i love football more.

Your hair has become one of your most recognisable assets.

When i was younger i used to shave my head but when it grew i realised it was something worth keeping long, especially when the girls from school started to give me head massages on the bus home from school. People have told me that if i didn’t have it i wouldn’t have got any votes from the umpires in junior footy because it makes me stand out on the field. But since arriving at the club, the boys at the club have been threatening to shave it off.

How did you earn the nickname ‘Chopper’?

Before i was born my parents were told to expect a girl. They didn’t have any boy’s names ready so Dad just pulled ‘Cheeky Chopper’ out of the blue. unfortunately i lived up to the name when i was younger by being a bit of a nuisance but over time ‘Cheeky’ got dropped off so it simply became ‘Chopper.’

What are you looking forward to in 2008?

i haven’t necessarily set myself too many goals as far as playing senior footy goes. i really want to get my body right, learn more about my body and make sure i am always fit enough to train and

play and hopefully the opportunities will come from there. i’m not looking at playing heaps of games for Fremantle or anything like that this year. i really want to succeed at WAFL level and hopefully that will be good enough to see my name go in the hat for selection.

What have you found to be the best part of being an AFL footballer?

The best thing is that you get to live your dream and play alongside guys that you have idolised since you were a kid, like Peter Bell. Meeting all the people at the club has been really good too because everyone is great and really genuine. The whole idea of having football as a full-time job is pretty amazing too. it’s still so surreal being here.

What was the draft like for you?

As i went to Draft Camp there were a few clubs that said they were interested in recruiting me and they said they were looking at drafting me around the early 30s in the National Draft. Those picks came and went and i thought, “What’s going to happen now? Oh no, where am i going?” But once it came up on the computer screen that i was going to Fremantle i ran around the house celebrating, Mum and Grandma had tears in their eyes and Dad was devastated because i wasn’t going to be moving out of the house! i was very excited to get picked up by Fremantle because i always wanted to come here.

What do you see as your best football attributes?

My marking and work rate are probably two of my biggest strengths that i really pride myself on and work hard on. My goal kicking lately has really improved thanks to our Skills Coach Michael Prior.

What was the welcome like for you at the club?

Terrific. There are so many good guys here and all the staff are fantastic. Ryan Murphy has been sensational and has looked after me since i got here.

Perth’s ChRIS MAyNE was the club’s third round selection (No. 40 overall) in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft. A strong leading forward with good hands overhead and accuracy in front of goal, Chris also has the ability play midfield or wing as he did through his progression from colts to seniors with Perth in 2007.

Family Fun Day

ThE ANNUAL Family Fun Day was again a huge success with over 2000 members heading to Adventure World on Sunday 9 March to escape the heat and enjoy a day of sunshine.

With the mercury hitting 30 degrees the speed slides, waterslides and the pools were the most popular attractions and the most fun seemed to be had by the members who were prepared to take on the players on the Aqua 6 Racer.

The competition for the title of the speed slide champion on the Aqua 6 Racer was fierce, with Des headland, Brett Peake, Dean Solomon, Marcus Drum and Byron Schammer given a run for their money by the members and there were some impressive battles fought out throughout the morning.

Jeff Farmer, Shaun McManus and heath Black were also eager to battle on the waterslide with members as well as their own sons. After plenty of fun was had on the tubes and the mats, Jeff Farmer was unanimously crowned king of Water Mountain!

But not all the fun was to be had in the water! The players were scattered right throughout the theme park with Roger hayden and Ryan Crowley setting the pace on the Grand Prix Race Track. The main stage and lawn area was also a hype of activity with lots of games, activities and giveaways organised for the children, which also gave the club’s sponsors an opportunity to get involved.LG Electronics gave product demonstrations, Mazda proudly showed off the new Mazda 6, Coca-Cola ran a handball competition with plenty of giveaways, Integrated Group distributed the new blow up anchors, new Coaches Sponsor Marine & Civil gave out fun day showbags with a cap, sunscreen and a frisbee, there was plenty of Calciyum products thanks to Fonterra and the hBA health Insurance mascot was also on hand to join in the fun.

As always, the autograph signing tent proved popular with the members and supporters seeking out their favourite players for a signature. All in all it was a successful day and everyone enjoying the fun and activities at Adventure World, all with a Fremantle flavour.

OVER PAST seasons the Police at Subiaco Oval have reviewed the trading conditions of the Subiaco Oval Liquor License. THE 2008 SEASON has already kicked off with great results for Redkite, as their charity partnership with the Fremantle Football Club heads into its second year.

Fremantle’s recently appointed Coaches Sponsor, Marine and Civil, are going to get behind Redkite this season to help provide support for children with cancer and their families in Western Australia.

“At Marine & Civil, we also want to put back into the community and through our relationship with Fremantle Football Club, we have chosen to support Redkite”, said John Neylon, Managing Director of Marine and Civil.

The connection with Fremantle continues to deliver results for Redkite and here is just one story about how the partnership is making a difference.

SOPhIE’S SPIRIT LIFTED By SONGSophie is an 8-year-old girl who was diagnosed with “osteogenic sarcoma” of the right femur (bone tumour/right leg). She comes from a musically gifted family, both parents being professional musicians. Sophie had been learning piano for a few years prior to her diagnosis. initially she played the keyboard during music therapy sessions with her grandfather and Redkite’s music therapist. She gained confidence and self-esteem through her musical skills that helped her cope with her treatment. The Redkite Music Therapy Program provides Sophie and her family a means of self-expression as well as an outlet for laughter in an environment, which could otherwise be quite sombre. Late last year, with the help of Redkite’s music therapist she wrote songs – this one the lyrics she wrote:

Floating Balloons

I let go of ten thousand balloons today

They floated up…up…up and away

Off over the magic silvery ocean

They fly to parties

And dance to mice playing electric guitars

And flutter in the morning breezes

While a small blue butterfly sneezes

It gets blown backwards “Wheeeee!”

Backwards and forwards across the starry sea

Where mermaids are dancing and bumping about

Twirling their shimmering tails and shaking their

blue-green hair

Oh it’s beautiful!!!

Redkite chose to share this story as a way of saying thank you to the huge support Redkite has received through the Fremantle Football Club’s Community Goals Programme.

TO CELEBRATE the 25th birthday the Heart Foundation are conducting a mass participation skipping event on Friday 9 May 2008 to break a Guinness World Record for skipping. The current record is held in the united Kingdom by just under 8,000 participants skipping at various locations for three minutes with breaks of no more than 10 seconds. The hope is to break this record and create a world record in Australia.

This Australia-wide event will be a unique opportunity for children involved in Jump Rope for Heart to make history. in WA there will be a number of satellite events at schools across the state so that as many children as possible can take part.

The Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart program was established in Australia in 1983. Since then, more than eight million Australian school children have participated in the program to promote health and fun while raising more than $60 million for life saving research and health promotion programs.

Today, around 400,000 children participate each year in more than 2,300 schools across all states and territories of Australia. That’s enough skipping rope to stretch from Perth to Sydney!

The program runs for 3-10 weeks in each school, culminating in a fundraising Jump Off day where the

children demonstrate their new skills and raise funds for their participation.

Direct benefits to children include improved cardiovascular health and fitness, heart health awareness and knowledge, enhanced self-esteem and the opportunity to do something worthwhile for the community and all Australians.

uniquely positioned to educate families and school communities in the current climate of concern about childhood health and fitness, the Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart program is actively engaged in the fight against heart and blood vessel disease.

The Heart Foundation currently fund more than 165 outstanding research projects in the areas of heart, stroke and blood vessel disease. Each project has the potential to find new insights to help beat cardiovascular disease and none would be possible without the support of the teachers, parents and the children who take part in the Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart program.

For further information about Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart in Western Australia, please contact Coordinator Ashlie Hirniak on 9382 5988 or visit www.heartfoundation.org.au/Get_Involved/Jump_Rope_for_heart

THE ELLENBROOK Eels has been an aligned club since 2004 and with their ten year anniversary celebrated this year has marked the occasion by strengthening their affiliation with Fremantle by renaming themselves the Ellenbrook Dockers.

At a special general meeting in December last year, the Ellenbrook members unanimously voted to become an official Partner Club of the Fremantle Football Club. The club has valued its association with Ellenbrook and the recent decision further strengthens its relationship with the club and will ensure the continued growth of football in the Ellenbrook community.

Ellenbrook is one of the fastest growing junior football clubs in Australia with more than 400 children playing at the club, a 200 per cent increase since 2004.

The Secret Harbour Junior Football Club was founded in 2004 and has been aligned to

Fremantle since the very beginning. Located in the rapidly developing region just north of Mandurah, Secret Harbour has more than 400 registered players at the club from Auskick through to u15s. Secret Harbour will also take on the Dockers name to replace the Storm nickname they have had since 2004.

After becoming official Partner Clubs, the Ellenbrook Dockers and Secret Harbour Dockers will wear the Fremantle playing strip during their seasons. Schools within the Ellenbrook and Secret Harbour communities will also benefit from the new partnership with the club providing schools in the areas with playing jumpers.

Fremantle has developed 26 partner club relationships that spread far and wide from metropolitan Perth to the eastern states, and onto Europe and the united States. The club’s German based partner club, the Hamburg

Dockers, hosted the Australian Football Eu Cup 2007 at their home ground of Stadtpark in downtown Hamburg in late September. The tournament saw twelve nations from all over Europe compete to see which country was the European union’s most powerful Australian Footballing nation.

The Hamburg Dockers have been a partner club of Fremantle since 2004 and is one of three internationally based partner clubs joining the Cincinnati Dockers (uSA) and the Dublin Dockers (ireland) as the club’s overseas partner clubs.

Fremantle’s Partner Club programme is proudly supported by Members Equity Bank.

THERE WAS plenty of Christmas cheer as more than 2000 junior members and their families joined in the ‘Brownes Giant Christmas Football Extravaganza’ at Fremantle Oval on Sunday 9 December. The Junior Members Christmas Party is the most popular event for junior members and their families as they kick off their festive seasons each year with the players. With heaps of fun activities for everyone and CalciYum giveaways thanks to Brownes, the highlight of the morning for the children was the

‘Superclinic’ where the children enjoyed an hour of fun on Fremantle Oval learning skills from the players. The party goers then stayed around to watch the players go through their paces in a training session on the oval. Entertainment was provided by club sponsor 92.9, Perth’s hit Music Station, with Wippa from the breakfast show the MC for the day. The morning was a great success and would not have been made possible without the support of Brownes and the club’s passionate and loyal supporters.

Ellenbrook and Secret Harbour AlignThe club’s network of official aligned Partner Clubs continues to grow with the recent addition of the Ellenbrook and Secret harbour Junior Football Clubs to the Fremantle Aligned Club programme.

Community Camp

W hile 25 of their team mates were off in South Africa for a community camp with a difference and an exhibition

game against Carlton in Johannesburg, fifteen players including Captain Matthew Pavlich, Josh Carr, Shaun McManus, Luke McPharlin, Dean Solomon, Scott Thornton, Luke Webster and new recruit Mark Johnson ventured into the heart of the Great Southern sparking plenty of interest with local Fremantle fans eager to catch a glimpse of the players.

The camp kicked off with a ‘Superclinic’ at Railways Oval that proved a huge hit with more than 300 children relishing the chance to learn the skills of the game from the players and Johnny ‘The Doc’ Docker. While they learned the all-important footy skills, the children also enjoyed tug-of-war challenges, revelled in the vortex throwing and received a 2008 Team Poster that they were able to get signed by the players.

After the fun of the ‘Superclinic’ the players then hit the track for a training session at nearby Collingwood Park in front of a lively local crowd.

Six talented young footballers from the Great Southern Region were given the chance to join in the session and showcase their skills.

The opening day of the camp closed with a sell-out Sportsman’s Night held at the Albany Golf Course. Guests enjoyed a Panel Show with Shaun McManus, Matthew Pavlich and Josh Carr in the hot seats. The trio shared insights into their life as AFL footballers that included some humorous anecdotes about their careers.

Day two started with the players attending a breakfast for local football administrators organised by the Department of Sport and Recreation that was then followed by the players taking up the challenge from the local champions of Middleton Beach for a lawn bowls competition.

Fremantle’s quest for glory saw Shaun McManus, Josh Carr, Luke McPharlin, Scott Thornton, Luke Webster and Mark Johnson take the skipper’s hats for the players’ teams in the bowls tournament.

Despite some patches of brilliance and style on the greens displayed by a few Fremantle players, every team was outplayed on the day by

the formidable teams from Middleton Beach with the locals recording a clean sweep in what was an enjoyable afternoon on the green.

The afternoon concluded with a trip to the Great Southern Football Academy where twenty lucky teenagers aged between 16 and 18 years were given a rare opportunity to take part in a training session run by Fremantle players at Centennial Park. The group were taken through a skills session, modified match play as well as a nutrition seminar. Dean Solomon then spent time with the players and their parents sharing the story of his rise to the elite level of Australian football. Dean’s key message was that to succeed at the next level would require them to make the right decisions and choose the correct pathways in life that would give themselves the best chance to achieve their goals.

The players and staff of the Fremantle Football Club would like to thank everyone in Albany who helped ensure the camp was a great success and for making the club feel so welcome. All proceeds raised from the events held at the camp will go directly back junior and senior football in the region.
