Key Dates for the Diary for 2021 January 27 & 28 Staff Development Days Students Return Friday January 29 – wear sports uniform January 29, February 1 & 2 – Kinder Individual Best Start assessments Wednesday February 3 – Kinder starts!

New Uniform Available Now! Lowes are Stocked and Ready to Rock Lowes Charlestown Square has our new uniform op ons on the shelves and are ready to roll them out the door. Every new  item except the pleated navy  long pants, are  in store and wai ng purchase. Given that there are op ons please ask the staff at Lowes to allow students to try on the various op ons so you can work  out what  best  suits  and  feels  comfortable. A  show  of  hands  at  school  last week when we modelled the new op ons for the students,  indicated that many of the girls  liked the navy culo es and new shirt op on but we also had many s ll planning to wear their tunic. The vast majority of the boys indicated  they would opt  for  the new shirt with  the  ‘pointed’ collar as opposed  to  the rounded collar, along with  the navy  shorts.  I’m guessing over  me  the Lowes  staff will get  to know  the most popular op on should that be of importance to you. It seemed the students were very impressed especially with the new shirt with the CSPS school logo. Please note that the jackets will remain the same so no need to opt for new if you already have one. Hats will s ll be available ONLY from the school office.

Crisis Averted! Congratula ons Charlestown South Community on handling the 2020 school year with style and grace. Despite the craziness of this year surrounding us on all fronts and feeling like the enemy was advancing from all sides, there was wonderful sense of calm from day one. It is really only when a crisis comes that you  discover  how  well  you  cope  under  pressure.  Some  freeze,  some  collapse,  some  default  to  an extremely nega ve se ng and yet others li  their head, rise above the circumstances and move forward regardless. Our  teachers and  support  staff were  simply outstanding  in 2020.  I will admit  ini ally  I had concerns way back  in  the middle of Term 1 when everything halted momentarily as we all  stood and looked at each other with  that  look  that  says  “So what do we do now?” That  feeling  lasted about 24 hours  as  I watched  our  team  click  into  gear  and  plan  the  next  2 months  as  though  they  had  been expec ng this all their lives. At that point, I relaxed, took a breath and knew ‘we’ve got this!” During this me, our kids were amazing. I truly believe that  just about every student at CSPS  is exactly where they

would have been academically had Covid not reared  its ugly head. They have applied  themselves with great determina on and resilience and  just got the  job done. The reason being ….. they have the most outstanding and caring parents on the planet!  I did men on on Presenta on Day that this year highlighted the age old saying that ‘it takes a village to raise  a  child’  and we proved  that  to be  en rely  correct during  the  course of  this  year.  Thank  you  to everyone  involved  in our  ght knit CSPS community for pulling together and not only withstanding the onslaught, but advancing and winning the ba le!  Presenta on Day Celebra ons Congratula ons  to  all  staff  and  students  involved  in making  this  such  a  successful  event  despite  the restric ons imposed by Covid. Fortunately, for the first  me in many months we were able to have more than just a couple of parents onsite to celebrate learning with us. The list of award recipients is published later  in  this Newsle er. How wonderful  it was  to have our Concert Band finally play and our Elec ve Choir  sing  to  a  real  live  audience!  I  am  almost  certain  all would  agree  the  quality  of  both  groups  of performers was quite outstanding.

Year 6 ‘Clap Out’ Final Day of Term, 2020

Given that our wonderful group of Year 6 students of 2020 has missed out on what their predecessors experienced in terms of opportuni es and experiences, we’d like to make our usual ‘clap out’ on our last day a li le different than usual. In order for parents and carers of Year 6 students to at least experience and share some sort of par ng ritual, we would  like to  invite this specific group to a end the school at 2.30pm on our final day. (We ask parents and carers of all other students to please honour the usual pick up  me  and  remain  offsite  un l  3pm  so we  adhere  to  the  Covid  safe  Regula ons  specified  by  the Department of Educa on.)

During this  me we would like to acknowledge our depar ng families, some of whom have been part of the CSPS family well beyond a decade. We would also like to acknowledge each individual student rather than just the whole Year 6 crew as per other years. Normally, we would do this at their Year 6 Farewell with you present, but we all know the ‘Covid Cut or Cancelled’ story, oh so well by now. So we would ask you  to  join  us  and  take  a  seat  upon  the  ‘silver  seats’  in  our  COLA  area  on Wednesday  a ernoon  at 2.30pm December 16 as we celebrate a significant milestone in the life of each of our Year 6 students.

We’ve Pooled Our Resources Mrs  Pascoe  has managed  to  pull  off  the  nego a on  of  a  life me  (police  are  reques ng  her  services already!) and we are heading to Charlestown Pool with Stages 2 & 3 this Tuesday for our end of year pool party. Teachers can now halt blowing up the pump up baby pools that were being posi oned in the wet areas  of  classrooms!  Thank  you Mrs  Pascoe  for  ge ng  us  through  the  gate  …  albeit  in  2  separate sessions. On Tuesday Stage 2 & 3 students can dress out of uniform but must have a shirt that covers their  shoulders.  Don’t  forget  the  sunscreen,  food, water  bo le  and  (highly  recommended)  a  pair  of goggles just in case the chlorine levels are high.   Simply Superb!!!

How our P&C team s ll managed to raise in excess of $17,000 in a year that will go down in history forever, is an absolute miracle! In fact, we have asked P&C President, Craig Barnes, along with our Fundraising Coordinator, Mrs Katrina Crump, to walk past our new water bo le filling and drinking sta on just to see what might happen! Here are some of the new addi ons to our school as a result of our P&C Fundraising. Water Sta on dona on $2000, School Blazers $1100, Maths Pathways $2000, Crea ve Play Area $2500, Garden Bed $246, Year 6 Farewell Gi s $500, 10 x iPads $4860, Covered sea ng area $3000, 3 x bench seats $1527 ‐ total donated to the school for 2020 $17,733.

A massive thank you also to Cass Small and all of her canteen team for a job superbly done. You have served the CSPS community wonderfully, not to men on the funds put back into a whole variety of

resources for our kids. 👏

A Big Thank You to HopeUC The tradi on that has been  long standing for many years now ever since HopeUC Church used our Hall each Sunday for Children’s Church back in 2014‐17, has con nued. On Presenta on Day we were able to present two very fortunate students with a $250 scholarship each to a end HopeUC Crea ve Arts School for Dance. This scholarship will allow for just over two terms of free dance tui on. This year’s recipients were Gia L and  Jasmine W. The girls certainly won’t  feel out of place as we already have many of our students a ending one a ernoon a week  for dance, drama or music  tui on. Not ending  their support there, HopeUC have  also donated  12  large Christmas  Food Hampers  for CSPS  families.  Together  as  a community we thank them for their generosity and long standing support of CSPS.

Captains Hooked

As most  are  aware, we  have  had  our  School  Leader Elec ons for 2021 and our incoming Captains and Vice‐Captains  performed  an  outstanding  job  on Presenta on  Day  albeit  a  small  cameo  role.  Newly elected  Captains  Lacy  B  and  Sam  C,  along with Vice‐Captains Niamh M  and  Josh  F, have had outstanding role models in Sunny R, Zach K, Maddy F and Aiden W who  have  all  passed  on  a  few  golden  ps.  At  the commencement of 2021 we will elect our other Year 6 school leadership posi ons which will be closely followed by our Leader Induc on Assembly.

Mr J’s Free Paren ng Tip

Keep reading! You o en hear the odd  infants teacher  (even the normal ones some mes too! LOL) talk about the ‘holiday slump’. This phenomenon of nature occurs when a small child aged between 5 and 8, who  is  reading  so brilliantly with fluency,  intona on and expression,  suddenly  regresses  seemingly by months over a few weeks of holidaying. However,  it doesn’t always happen! In fact,  it has been known for some to return to the classroom far beyond where they  le  off. The common denominator  in these unique cases ….. these children have con nued to read during the break. Can I encourage all parents, not just those of our li ler ones, to keep your kids reading over the next 5 weeks. Find some fun books, read lots to them, try the audio books on car trips, read before bed to them and have them also read to you. These prac ces are guaranteed to sack the slump big  me!

Thank you to families for supporting Book Week 2020. This year has been different to the past. Fortunately, the children maintained their enthusiasm. Everybody seemed to enjoy the day. It was lovely to see such a variety of costumes.

Thank you also for supporting the Book Fair. Book sales totalled approximately $3300. The library

receives about $800 in commission. Thank you also to families that donated a book to the library. It is greatly appreciated. The children get very excited when introduced to a new book. Enjoy the holidays!

Mrs Stoppini

Merry Christmas to all our CSPS families. Thank you for your support and understanding in 2020 and we look forward to welcoming you all back into the school and the Office in 2021. Best wishes from Mrs Kellie Pascoe and Mrs Cheryl Hansen.

Shoe Lace Tying with Ascent Footwear

On Wednesday 2 December, Ascent Footwear visited our school and held a Lace Tying Workshop with our K-2 students in partnership with The Athlete’s Foot at Charlestown Square. This YouTube vid-eo details the steps taught: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CK2tVgPmTg

Each student received a shoe pencil case with laces to practice with.

Thanks to The Athletes Foot at Charlestown Square and Accent Footwear.

Recycling at Charlestown South PS

We have just joined Terra Cycle’s pen recycling program! This program accepts pens, whiteboard markers, textas, permanent markers, correction tapes and fluid, as well as mechanical pencils. These plastic items are then shredded, melted and turned into pellets which are then made into new products like picnic benches and playground equipment. Here at CSPS we use up to 2500 whiteboard markers in a year! We will now be able to recycle these items and save them ending up in landfill. We invite all of our CSPS families to join us in recycling your pens and markers - and we’ve placed a collection box in the foyer of the Office for students to use.

Just a reminder we accept bread tokens too - please hand these to Mrs Hansen as they are collected separately.
