PRAYER FOR THE QUARTER
Sometimes, Lord, the mountain I’m climbingturns out to be onlya bump in the road...
Sometimes, Lord, the crisis I’m inis not much morethan a false impression...
Sometimes, Lord,my greatest fearisn’t fear at allbut only my lack of trust in you...
Sometimes, Lord, when I’m feeling most sadit’s because I’ve lost sight of what makes me glad...
Sometimes, Lord, when I’m lost and alonethe only way homeis to take your hand...
Sometimes, Lord, when you seem far awayit’s time for meto find you in prayer...
And sometimes, Lord, when prayer won’t come, what I need then is restin the silence we share...
Amen.
Residents at Fox Manor Rave!“Fox Manor provides a homey, warm atmosphere and community. The entire staff, including all areas of service and ministry, go far beyond their job description as they provide us with their caring love.
I am thankful for the many extra hours they volunteer, our summer picnic was one very special example, and I would be remiss if I didn’t include the youth who served us that day. I look forward to their daily meal service.”
- Jo Heitmeyer, Fox Manor Resident (2 years)
“I like the Catholic atmosphere. There are opportunities to learn more about Catholicism through the guidance of Monsignor Rick and Monsignor Bob and the Sisters.
The residents are welcoming and caring. The residents also represent a wide variety of talents and experience that add ways to widen my world. Fox Manor is a pleasant place because the community is enhanced through Tammy’s social activities and her enthusiastic ability to relate to the residents in a positive manner. She offers activities that most of the residents can participate in.
In addition, there are opportunities to participate in the gardening of Fox Manor flowers. Dani has been very supportive. Her knowledge of gardening has made Fox Manor a brighter environment.
The Bible classes offered by Monsignor Bob and Deacon Paul have been a growth opportunity for me. Other workshops such as nutrition information by the chefs (Kim and Debbie), widow workshops and other community visits and entertainment have enriched my experiences.
It is also comforting to know that through the sincere kindness and care of the staff, I am in a community that respects older adults through the staff’s daily positive interactions. I look forward to new adventures offered by the staff at Fox Manor!”
- Carole Tadavich, Fox Manor Resident ( 9 months)
“The staff is wonderful!
I enjoy the dinner meal. So blessed! I don’t have to cook!
I always enjoy the entertainers Tammy Keeley, our Activities Director, invites. I enjoy talking and being together with the residents and my family enjoys attending all the activities they are invited to!”

A Letter from the CEOSister Maureen Comer, OP
October 2018
Dear Friends,
It is with great excitement I share this Continuum with you. Within these pages you will find the plans for the rebuild of our original nursing home, now called Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. The floor plans are being tweaked for final approval at this time. We look forward to getting the i’s dotted and t’s crossed with state and local agencies. With that accomplished, we are on schedule to break ground in the spring of 2019.
This $10 million project will help us as we move toward Ensuring our Legacy for Future Generations. When finished all our residents will have private rooms and private baths; there will be a lakeside patio, small dining rooms and living rooms for visitors to spend time with their loved ones and additional courtyards. This is very exciting for all of us.
Additionally, in this issue you will see highlights of our 2018 Golf for Lourdes. We were blessed this year with a matching gift directed toward the landscaping needs of the Clausen Manor courtyard. These very special residents use this courtyard as they tend to gardens, relax in the outdoors and enjoy a variety of activities. This new look is greatly appreciated. Please take note of the sponsors of our golf outing who make this event the success it is year after year. I encourage you to make plans now to join us next year – June 20th at Majestic Golf Course.
We are entering this joyful and grateful time in our calendars, that of Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Let us all take a moment to reflect on the gifts bestowed by our gracious God. I certainly count your faithful care and support of Lourdes among them.
Blessings,
Sister Maureen Comer Chief Executive Officer
Ensuring Our Legacy For Future Generations
Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center is the anchor of Lourdes Senior Community. Lourdes’ mission to provide quality senior care excellence led to the founding of Fox Manor on the Lake independent living (1991), Clausen Manor memory care (1995) and Mendelson Home assisted living (2001). Today, the overall Lourdes community has grown to some 250 residents served by a staff of 270. The Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center was named one of the nation’s best by the magazine U.S. News and World Report, and in 2018 was named Best of the Best among senior facilities for the eleventh consecutive year by readers of the Oakland Press.
When Lourdes Nursing Home was dedicated on May 1, 1965, it was a state-of-the art facility, providing 24-hour skilled nursing care for seniors, regardless of race, creed or ability to pay. The building, with three wings, contained private rooms, semi-private rooms and wards. Among the initial
amenities were a chapel area, large lounge areas and dining facilities, x-ray, occupational and physical therapy centers, a hydrotherapy unit and a beauty-barber shop. There was also an enclosed courtyard, providing a secure place for residents to enjoy the outdoors.
For decades, Lourdes has continued to grow and thrive, providing outstanding care for seniors with its core values of Dignity, Service, Compassion and Spirituality. A portion of the community’s success may be attributed to the organizations ability to adapt, accommodating the needs of older adults as they change. Such was the case for the incorporation of short-term rehab.
Physical recovery and strength training have always been a part of daily care. However, the need for physical therapy after an injury or illness has increased steadily over the years. In the early 2000s, Lourdes expanded care to bring short-term rehabilitation services to Lourdes
Senior Community. St. Jude hall was designated for rehab patients. An average of twenty short-term rehabilitation residents received care from highly qualified physicians, therapists, nurses, dieticians and social workers. After over a decade, the time came for new construction to enhance the quality of life for residents.
Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center broke ground on the renovation plan in autumn of 2014. The plan was divided into two phases. The first phase focused on a new rehabilitation wing to enhance and expand current services. The primary goal was to improve resident units, the therapy center, common areas and exterior appeal. The project included fifty private rooms and baths, a state-of-the-art physical therapy gym, new courtyard and visiting areas. The unit opened to residents in December 2015.
Now, plans for phase two have begun. Lourdes is preparing a new project to improve their long-term
care services. To remain a leader in senior services, Lourdes is renovating the Healthcare Center.
“Our mission calls us to honor the uniqueness of each person entrusted to our care. With the ever-changing needs facing older adults, we are committed to having a knowledgeable staff, and providing care and services in a state-of-the-art facility. We begin phase two with excitement and anticipation for the future,” said Sister Maureen Comer, OP, Chief Executive Officer of Lourdes Senior Community.
Fusco, Shaffer and Pappas, Inc., are the architects for this renovation, having partnered with Lourdes Community on other projects such as the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel in 1986. Likewise, Frank Rewold and Sons, Inc., the contractors for the
rehab expansion, have agreed to undertake the Healthcare Center renovations.
The construction process is expected to last approximately two years. Renovations will
take place one hall at a time, with construction lasting approximately ten months for each unit. The 29,000 square foot renovation will feature forty-five private rooms and baths.
“The new rooms are designed similar to those of Rehab East and West,” said Robert Pickup, Director of Plant Operations at Lourdes Senior Community.
Each hall will consist of approximately twenty-two rooms, containing essential furniture: a bed, nightstand, armoire, and flat screen television. In addition, each unit will be equipped with a gathering area for residents and visitors, warming kitchen and a luxury dining room. Other features will include a sunroom and an additional courtyard.
“This phase, when completed, will complement the rest of Lourdes Senior Community, enhancing the home-like atmosphere expected by our residents,” said Robert.
Lourdes is set to break ground in spring of 2019. Regular updates will be posted to Lourdes’ website and Facebook page as plans are finalized. Questions and comments are welcomed, whether in person, online, in writing (www.lourdesseniorcommunity.org) or by telephone (248-674-2241).

Chapels $1,000,000-$500,000
Lourdes is dedicated to providing our residents, their families and staff members the opportunity to find peace and comfort in one of our chapels. These chapels serve as a place for private meditation or prayer in addition to hosting communal prayer such as Mass.
Halls $250,000
When completed Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center will be made up of multiple halls. There will be a number of halls for naming within the rehabilitation area and the healthcare center.
Dining Rooms$100,000 Dining Rooms provide our residents a
relaxing and engaging location to dine with fellow residents and families. There will be multiple dining rooms in the healthcare center. Additionally there is one in the rehabilitation wing available for naming.
Living Rooms$50,000 A gift for one of our living rooms or
common areas is an investment in the daily lives of our residents. These areas are used for activities, family visits, television watching and socialization.
Beauty Salon$25,000 A beauty salon is a great place in which
to relax and feel spoiled. The beauty shop offers a salon experience where residents enjoy being pampered. Services include a perm, color treatment, shampoo and style. The pampering in our salon is an experience to be enjoyed and remembered.
Courtyards$25,000
One of the true assets of Lourdes Senior Community is our outdoor spaces. The courtyards offer a relaxing atmosphere for residents to enjoy fresh air, the smell of grass and flowers and the sound of birds and squirrels. These are wonderful places for meditation, activities or a picnic lunch with family.
Resident Rooms$10,000 Each resident room is designed for a safe
and spacious homelike setting. Donors are afforded the opportunity to dedicate a room by inscribing a plaque placed near the room entrance.
Ensuring Our Legacy for Future Generations
Today we embark on the rebuild of Lourdes Nursing Home. We are designing a Healthcare Center for today and tomorrow. This rebuild includes space for those living with memory loss and those needing long term care. Throughout Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center there are a number of courtyards for relaxing and enjoying the fresh air.
Lourdes Senior Community has long offered “naming opportunities” to our supporters as a way to honor and recognize our friends. We offer the ability to name a part of Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center after a donor, a family member, friend or staff.
We invite you to consider a naming opportunity within our new Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Your donation will Ensure Our Legacy for Future Generations.

Clausen Manor opened in 1995. This residence offers an intimate setting and quality care for individuals living with memory loss or Alzheimer’s disease. The facility features twenty private rooms and baths, a homelike living and dining room, and an enclosed courtyard with gardens. Those gardens are the center of Clausen Manor’s Green Thumb Club, a weekly gardening group for those who wish to exercise their affinity for plants. Gardening and hobbies are an important part of daily life for residents at Lourdes. In addition to maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, hobbies reduce stress and anxiety, and lower blood pressure. Gardening in particular provides
social interaction, helps improve mobility and accelerates recovery time after an injury or illness. The fresh air and sunlight also promote emotional and psychological well-being. Clausen’s courtyard was part of the original construction, and has provided a place for many activities and
events, including summer picnics and holidays. However, after twenty-three years, the courtyard needed a few upgrades. Thanks to a generous donation, Clausen was able to raise funds for a revitalization of the landscape. Each summer, Lourdes hosts a Golf for Lourdes event. Annually, the outing raises nearly $50,000 in funds, which are used to improve quality of life for the residents. This year, a friend of Lourdes, made an additional contribution. Deb Pullen has served on the Golf Committee for sixteen years. She is an integral part of the plans and preparation for the event. She is also the co-owner of Clarkston Pharmacy, who sponsors the outing each year. “Two days before the event she
came to us,” said Colleen Burke, Development Director at Lourdes Senior Community. “She wanted to make a donation and asked what the residents needed.” Colleen met with Chief Executive Officer, Sister Maureen Comer, OP to discuss possible projects. Clausen Manor had requested a new gazebo, but the staff knew a little extra care could bring new life to the entire courtyard. They discussed their ideas with Deb and she agreed. At the golf outing, Deb asked the participants to match her gift and the response was overwhelming. Over $5,000 was raised for the courtyard project, allowing Clausen to obtain a new gazebo, fence, flowers and additional patio furniture.

Saint Rose of LimaMaking a Difference in the Lives of Our Seniors
St. Rose of Lima was born in 1586 in Lima, Peru. During her life, she chose a path of spiritual contemplation and penance. In 1606, she became a Dominican of the Third Order. St. Rose of Lima spent most of her life in seclusion where she fasted and prayed. She was also deeply dedicated to serving the sick and hungry in her community. She cared for the poor and aged, selling flowers from her garden to raise funds for the needy.
In 1950, the Dominican Sisters of Oxford became an independent order. They took St. Rose as their patron saint and were named the congregation of St. Rose of Lima. The Sisters continued her work, caring for the sick and elderly. In 1965 they opened Lourdes Nursing Home. Since that time, Lourdes has encouraged employees to embrace the values of St. Rose, providing care for those in need.
The St. Rose of Lima Grant program began ten years ago. It was instituted by Sister Maureen Comer, OP, Chief Executive Officer at Lourdes Senior Community and supported by the Board of Directors.
“We wanted to seek the wisdom from our employees about what we need to best live out our mission,” said Sister Maureen. “We have a dedicated staff who perform their duties with warmth, professionalism, and integrity. The St. Rose of Lima grant program affords them the opportunity to enhance the lives of the residents.”
The purpose of the grant program is to provide resources and programs, improving quality care for residents. As experts of their departments, employees are encouraged to submit a grant request for items they believe improve daily life, enhance safety or provide education to residents, families or staff. Each grant submission describes what the request is for and how it will benefit residents.
Each department plays a role in the physical, emotional and spiritual health of the residents. These needs are met through environments, culinary and housekeeping services, activities, pastoral care and more.
This year staff submitted over thirty items. Requests included CPR training materials, patio furniture and wheelchair cushions. Other submissions to St. Rose of Lima included bingo tables, storage cabinets, coffee machines and gardening tools.
Thank you to all the employees who submitted requests. Your contribution to Lourdes’ residents has a lasting impact on their quality of life and care.
