Celebrating its seventeenth edition, the festival is devotedto the study of the history and interpretation of the LatinAmerican and Iberian art song. In 2021 it presents eightconcerts, both live and streamed, with artists fromCatalonia and Latin America.

Although streaming is new tomany, Barcelona Festival ofSong incorporated it in 2013, when it held interactiveconcerts between São Paulo and Barcelona, usingInternet2 infrastructures. In 2021, in addition to streamingthe concerts, the festival continues to championinnovation in music by incorporating the XAVE COINcryptocurrency, a resource that aims to democratizeaccess to music.

The lineup of the 2021 festival is incredible. It opens onJuly 8th with the recital La casa del lucero in which thefamous soprano Patricia Caicedo and pianist ManuelRuíz pay tribute to Colombian composer Jaime León(1921-2015) on his centenary.

On July 9th, mezzo-soprano Poliana Alves and pianistThiago de Freitas fromMinasGerais and soprano JulianaStarling and harpist Soledad Yaya from Sao Paulo, Brazilwill present the recital Recomendação, a program ofsongs by Brazilian composers.

On July 13th, in the emblematic Sala de Llevant of the BibliotecadeCatalunya, theGreek pianist NikosStavlas, presents the recitalHaikus for piano, performing pieces by Mompou, León andpremiering the works of fellow Greek Theofilos Lambrianidis.

On July 14th, Mexican mezzo-soprano Daniela Cortés, pianistManuel Ruíz and Dr. Enid Negrete perform Marchita el alma, arecital-conference dedicated to the Mexican composer ManuelPonce (1882-1948).

The final concerts will feature the course participants, who areprofessional singers from the U.S., Colombia, and Mexico. OnJuly 15th, former participants from different parts of the UnitedStateswill performat theAmbassadorsConcert,whileonJuly16that the Biblioteca deCatalunya, wewill listen to the programEl goigde cantar.

On July 17th at the Reial Cercle Artístic, we will hear the programCants de l'ànima with the participants of the 2021 courseperforming songs in Catalan, Spanish and Portuguese bycomposers from both sides of the Atlantic. As is tradition at thefestival, the cycle Dues cançons d'amor, by the Americancomposer Brian Field, based on poems by the Catalan CarlesDuarte i Montserrat, will be premiered.

With its innovative line up, in 2021, the Barcelona Festival of Songonce again combines its vocation to preserve the Iberian and LatinAmericanmusical heritagewith its innovative spirit, allowingmusicto reach all corners of the planet.

Organized byMundoarts, the festival relies on the collaboration oftheBiblioteca deCatalunya, theReial CercleArtístic, the InstitucióCultural del CIC, the Taller de Músics, GoMusic, the Residènciad'investigadors and the Barcelona City Council.

Throughout his life, he conducted hundredsof orchestras, among them the

Philharmonic Orchestra of Bogota, anorchestra that under his lead rose to anextraordinary level of quality. He had an

important career as a pedagogist and as acomposer. Most of his work is vocal, songsfor voice and piano based on texts of themost important poets from Colombia andEcuador. His songs reflect his multipleinfluences, the experience of a Pan-

American musician with solid training in theWestern classical repertoire and with

knowledge of the music of his time thatwas produced in his native countries,

Colombia and the United States.

Jaime León is one of the most importantPan-American composers of art song of the

20th century. In 2021, the BarcelonaFestival of Song celebrates his centenarywith concerts, recordings, publications, a

website and a documentary.

Born in Cartagena de Indias on December 18, 1921,Jaime León studied piano from childhood. He began

higher education at the National Conservatory ofColombia and finished it at the Juilliard School of Music

in New York where he studied on scholarship,graduating in 1944. There he continued his studies inconducting and soon began to conduct, first with the

National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia and later asmain conductor of the American Ballet Theater

Orchestra in the United States.

Patricia Caicedo, sopranoPatricia Caicedo is a soprano and musicologist whose scholarship andperformances center Latin American and Iberian art song. She hasreleased eleven albums and published numerous scholarly editions ofscores and books.She is also an avid performer of these works, having performed all overthe world in addition to founding and directing the Barcelona Festivalof Song, which focuses on the performance and study of LatinAmerican and Iberian art songs in Spanish, Catalan, and Portuguese.Patricia holds a Ph.D. in musicology from the UniversidadComplutense de Madrid and a Medical Doctor’s degree from theEscuela Colombiana de Medicina. MANUEL RUÍZ, pianoBorn in Barcelona, he began his musical studies in Caldes de Montbui andcontinued them at the Conservatorio del Liceo de Barcelona under PedroVallribera.Discipleof theconcert pianistCecilioTieles, he received theprizeof Honor of the Superior Grade of piano.He worked on the vocal and chamber repertoire with the maestro ÀngelSoler and was a disciple of the teacher and pianist Yiya Díaz with whom hestudied the Body-Art method in depth. He is a repertoire pianist andprofessor at the Conservatorio Superior de Música del Liceo de Barcelona.He collaborates regularly with the Choir and Orchestra of the Gran Teatrodel Liceo and with numerous singers.

She has performed at important venuesincluding Sala São Paulo; Teatro Municipal deSão Paulo; Teatro Municipal de Rio de Janeiro;Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires, Kurhaus inWiesbaden, Bad Schwalbach und Limburg(Germany), São Goar / Germany and at thePalácio Foz in Lisbon.

She has sung as soloist in numerous concerts,operas and oratorios. Since 2008 she has beena member of the Municipal Lyric Choir of theMunicipal Theater of SãoPaulo. Since 2018, shehasbeendeveloping the projectRecuerdas,withthe Argentine harpist Soledad Yaya.

She has been a professor of the Bachelor'sDegree in Music (Singing), at the Institute of Artsof the State University of São Paulo "Júlio deMesquita Filho" - Unesp, since 2017.

Born in Argentina, she began her harp studieswith Professor Dorita Zenobi, in theConservatory of Music of Córdoba, herhometown. She obtained first place in theNational Harpist Competition and received ascholarship from the Mozarteum Argentina,graduating in symphonic harp.

Soledad has been a member of the AcademicOrchestra of the Colón Theater and of theStable Orchestra of the Argentine Theater, ofLa Plata. After being invited by the São PauloState Symphony Orchestra-OSESP toparticipate in tours in Europe, the United Statesand South America, he settled in São Paulo /Brazil. There he graduated in harp, at theFacultat Santa Marcelina.

She is a professor at the Bacarelli Institute.Together with the soprano Juliana Starling sheforms the duo Recordas.

También ha cantado como solistaen numerosos oratorios entre los que se destacan la Cantata 78 de Bach, elRequiemdeMozart, laCantatadeNataldeR.Tacuchian. Haactuadocomosolistacon la Orquesta Sinfónica de la Unicamp (OSU) en obras como El Amor Brujo dede Falla, La Novena sinfonía de Beethoven y La Mort de Cléopâtre de H. Berlioz.Es investigadora,enfocadaen temas interpretativosde lamúsicaclásicabrasileña,con énfasis en el canto en portugués en los siglos XVI, XIX y principios del XX. Born in Santo André, São Paulo, he began his piano studies at the age of 16at the Conservatório Municipal Cacilda Becker. Thiago actively participates as a collaboratingpianist in workshops and master classes and has performed in variouschamber ensembles with renowned artists. He has received several awardsin piano competitions including second place in the Luis ThomasceckNational Piano Competition in the Professional Piano Solo category in 2009,and in 2010 second place and Honorable Mention for Best Performance of aClassical piece. Originally from Saltillo Coahuila, Mexico, Daniela began hermusical studies at the Escuela Superior de Música de laUniversidad Autónoma de Saltillo, where she was part of theOpera Workshop and made her debut as a soloist with thePhilharmonic Orchestra in the Zarzuela Luisa Fernanda.She has taken part in numerous competitions andworkedwithimportant teachers. Since its foundation in 2005, the festival hasreceived hundreds of singers from around theworld who come to Barcelona motivated by thedesire to learn the repertoire of artistic song inSpanish, Catalan and Portuguese.

When they return to their countries they becomeambassadors of our music, performing andteaching it in some of the most important musicalinstitutions in the world.

The festival is proud of their achievements and forthis reason today it pays tribute to them by makingthemtheprotagonistsof aglobal concert broadcastfrom different countries.
